Good evening HSG, I hope this isn't too out of place. I've seen some posts about panels before so I thought I might try and get the word out here, too.

My name is Brittany (dirktier/scariis on tumblr) and I ran the Homestuck Panel Q&A at Animefest this past year. Despite some initial bumps, it went really well and I was invited to host another Homestuck Q&A panel at Mizuumicon, a small one day convention in San Antonio (March 23).

So I'm looking for some cosplayers interested in being a part of the panel. We're looking for beta and alpha kids, and Alternian trolls. Not all spots are open, however. Since it's a small con (average 2,500 attendees though for one day con it isn't that bad) I will be autocasting for some parts.

Basic long and short of it:

Characters in homestuck have paper-white skin. Andrew had said a while back SOMEWHERE they were Caucasian, and then withdrew the comment in favor of "They are whatever race you want them to be it doesn't matter".
But he made this alternate outfit mode of a character Caucasian (I am saying this because difference between white as in white folks and white as in paper white). People made a huge stink about it, so Andrew decided to jab at them by making the girl say more or less in the comic "I FEEL SO CAUCASIAN RIGHT NOW" and then point out the pantone color.

It definitely is a bad idea.

I would suggest getting an eye exam before even thinking about any sort of contacts. Even if you plan to order them through the cheaper "grey market" route, you're still going to want to make sure your eyes are healthy and can handle them.

Better to spend a little now, than to risk racking up medical bills later because shit hit the fan at a con.

As long as you don't fill them in with black, you should be fine! Use a grey paint a shade or three darker than your face paint, that would make you look less feminine.

Simple solution is to use a darker grey instead of a black for your lips, and to only apply it on the upper lip; keep the lower lip the same grey as the rest of your face, or apply a small amount of the darker grey on the inner edge of the lower lip.

I have full lips and this works well for minimizing their appearance while still defining the mouth area.

I don't have a problem with sexy/nude/kinky cosplay shit, but I just don't see how it fits to the theme of the characters. From what's posted, all I see are two random characters tied up, while showing little emotion or characterization in the shots.

The costumes are also pretty lackluster in this case.

Requesting good sufferers?

Hey, can I get an opinion on something? I know genderbent versions are generally frowned upon, but I was thinking of doing one of a member of the Midnight Crew. Now, I'm definitely going to put a lot of effort into making sure it looks classy, well done, and not slutty, as those seem to be the major complaints.

For instance, if I were to do Diamonds Droog I would make the outfit as accurate as possible while still being obviously feminine so blazer/jacket and hat would remain the same, but I'd swap the pants and shoes out for a fitted pencil skirt with diamond patterned sheer black tights and heels. As for the face, I know zentai suits are ideal but I had an idea for queen of hearts style lipstick but with a diamond (or heart, if I go for Boxcars instead) shape that I'd like to at least try and I'm not sure how well it would translate onto fabric.

I think you're on track for a good cosplay. I'd go for non-zentai, as the make-up and tights idea sounds nice.

I wouldn't do any face/bodypaint in general, as most attempts look like a minstrel show at a coal mine cave-in. Just stick with classic make-up that leans more on the mature side. Looking up historical fashions and hairstyles are always good for inspiration.

Most gripes people have with genderbent is that it's either lazy as fuck (i.e: just wearing a kids' shirt with no wig) or over-the-top Slut Tier impractical (anything involving Dave Strider).

I admit to doing them myself, as some male characters are really incompatible for most crossplayers, and I have back issues that make binding painful and potentially damaging, even with my Underworks.

Why are people in this fandom so obsessed with making "alternate" outfits for characters? A lot of characters do have petty boring outfits (just pants, shirt and a wig) but all of the AU/fanart costumes seem kind of bizarre. I don't think I've seen any other fandom do it this much.

If you think your characters' design is boring, pick a more detailed/interesting one. I'd kill for lesser-cosplayed characters like carapace and etc. to be cosplayed more often.

i made an alternate for my latula, mainly because even though shes great and has a great design turtle necks bother my neck, so i made a new outfit for her, that still worked with her rad 90's skater theme, i think alternate outfits can be good if it works well with the character, but some are just like "why this."

Thanks for the advice, anon! The only issue with going non-zentai is that it might not be very recognizable, but that's just what I have to deal with for doing an alternate version of fairly unpopular (or at least under-cosplayed) characters.
I was planning on researching 1920's styles as well, to go with the whole twenties New York gangster theme the Midnight Crew has, so thanks for reminding me on that one too.

Don't make your horns all lumpy, too big, or too small, or falling off your head. Make sure your wig has the right amount of volume. Have the right blood color. Big hipster-y feferi glasses look stupid. Try to make decent jewelry. Also, don't just use a regular shirt for Feferi. It's a bathing suit with a colorful skirt.

Poorly constructed skirts, visible glovesleeve hems around your armholes (if you go the glovesleeve route), lumpy tridents. Horns that don't have the proper Pieces shape (either too curved, or straight) and don't taper at the ends.

For makeup, make sure you go for proper definition with your eyes, since they'll get lost behind your eyegear easily: mascara, eyeliner, maybe even consider falsies.

Poorly constructed gills can also pose an issue. Make sure they match your makeup, and make sure the transition point between makeup and gill isn't too obvious.

So this is my Aradia from yesterday, I already know if I do ever do her again, I'll have to get a different bodypaint, since the light grey I got looks a little blue in certain lighting. I also need a different shirt because this one was a bit too tight, so when I moved my arms it kind of wrinkled up in the logo area.
I'm also going to the gym and dieting now.

Is there anything I should fix up other than the things I mentioned?

I had taken the advice of my friend not to paint my palms, since I was scared it could rub off even though it was sealed to the nines.

Everyone has their preferences; there really is no "best" brand, but each method has their pros and cons.

Ben Nye cream makeup is one of the most popular, and has decent staying power when properly primed, powdered, and sealed (people forget that priming helps tons with getting the makeup to stay). It will rub off on clothing around the collar area, and if you use it on your hands and arms be prepared for a LOT of ruboff (and for it to show up on your black clothing if you're cosplaying a troll). It offers some of the best flexibility in areas such as the face and joints. Removal is simple (neutrogena makeup removal wipes are my favorite, and one or two will remove a face/neck/ears application).

Some people prefer water-based paints; they're not my favorites, but many people like that they can have a bit more staying power and feel not as creamy on the skin. Kryolan Aquacolor seems to be a common choice, along with Snazaroo. I have a bias against Snaz, though, as a cosplayer who was using it hugged my friend and some of it ended up staining his cosplay. :P

It really depends on your skin type, unfortunately. For instance, a friend and I both tried Mehron, applied it the same, sealed the same, but mine rubbed right off with light pressure and his had to be scrubbed off with soap and makeup remover.

PAX, which is Pros-Aide Adhesive mixed with acrylic paint, has arguably the best staying power of the common routes for troll cosplay, but this also means it can be difficult to get off. I've tried PAX made from No-Tack and Pros Aide II (haven't used the original formula), and Pros-Aide II is by far easier to remove. Other disadvantages to PAX is that it doesn't do as well around joints or high-flex areas around the face, and may be prone to cracking if you apply it too thickly. Also, where other makeup types will slowly wear away and decrease in opacity as they wear off, PAX will instead start to peel and flake once it finally does give in.

You might want to adjust the cut of your skirt a little to accommodate for what appears to be a deliciously plush rump, since it's interfering with the way the skirt hangs (longer in the front and way higher in the back). This just means making your back piece a bit longer than your front piece, or shortening the front piece.

Applying some interfacing to the inside of your shirt behind the symbol will stabilize the area and help with the pulling you've got going on there.

Also, don't be afraid to go a bit heavier on the eye makeup on your lower lids. Experiment a bit and have someone photograph your makeup tests to get a better idea of how the makeup will show up in photos. Even if it looks "heavy" IRL, I can guarantee you it'll be much less obvious once the camera hits it.

Just curious, from a /cgl/ perspective, what do you think about cosplayers using non-canon props/accesories/singular items of clothing for the sake of personal preference or headcanon?

For example, when I was shopping for shoes for my Terezi cosplay, I was looking for simple canon red shoes but ended up falling in love with this gaudy red velvet pair. They're a lot of fun and I wear them out of cosplay too, but sometimes I regret not going strictly canon.

IRL I've gotten nothing but compliments on them but I've yet to see what the internet thinks. Do details like this make a difference to you. Could this even make or break your opinion on a cosplay depending on how big of a difference from canon it was?

Yeah, sometimes grey make-up looks blue. It's a bitch and a half in photos. I had that issue with the Ben Nye grey, so maybe go for Snazzaroo? That's a brand I see thrown around a lot in these threads. It works differently from Ben Nye but it's just as effective, if not better.

I'd go a little heavier with the eye make-up, like another anon said, and maybe even fill in the eyebrows a little. Make-up washes a lot of that shit out and the rest of your face will pop if you put extra effort in the make-up on it.

A nit picky thing would be to finish the hems at the bottom of your shirt where you cut it. Fold over the sides and sew them in place so they match the hem of the rest of the shirt. You don't look like you're going for dead Aradia, so unfinished hems and thread everywhere isn't gonna look too hot.

I did use Snazaroo light grey though, just for the heads up. In some pictures you might be a little blue.

I actually did hem it where I cut it, except at the very tip of the cut because I couldn't get it to fold over correctly without it looking really weird.

I'll probably have to get a new, looser shirt and be more careful when it cut into it next time and make sure all of it is hemmed.

Ooh okay. THen it might just be a skin tone issue. I guess different skintones just react to that shade of grey in a particular way. I'm lighter and on the more yellowish side so maybe the contrast makes the grey end up looking a little more blue.

I say go for it, so long as it reasonably fits the character. Some characters sadly just don't have a lot of face time or props, like the Dancestors and prop-wise the Alpha kids before that flash, and it gets old quick seeing the same thing over and over again. Seeing a new design for say, a Karkat sickle could be great.

I don't recommend doing it for the sake of shipping though UNLESS it's an absolutely canon pairing (example, maybe a skateboard that Mituna and Latula designed together could be adorable, but seeing a John with Dave's sword would be awkward). As for details with cosplays, I think it could work better too depending on your bodytype/shape. Example, skirt-shapes for girls who wear skirts.

From what it sounds like those shoes for Terezi are a great touch, they sound adorable, and it will DEFININTLY set you apart from the other cosplayers which is nice. I say don't regret a thing.

If you decide to buy contacts online, check with your eye doctor first to make sure that you're not getting contacts that'll make you eyes sting.
You can also speak to your eye doctor about getting "test" contacts- just non-prescription clear contacts that you wear for about a week to make sure your eyes can handle it. It's extremely dangerous to just buy a pair of contacts and wear them all day at a con without having even worn any before.
