And of course the hosts did the usual cringe-worthy reaction to the word "Lolita". I dunno why anyone would put themselves through the torture of watching that episode. >> No.6546492

The girl in the lolita WNTW lives in my state and has been to a couple meetups I was also at, including one that was only a couple of weeks after the episode aired.
She told us how she had been treated pretty terribly (her clothes that were shipped were MOLDY by the time she got to NYC, and they still made her try them on, among other things) and how they had edited things to make her seem worse than she was. She also told us she had stopped wearing things to work right after her boss asked her to, so that was a moot point on the hosts' part.

I haven't seen her in a year or so, but I think she still wears lolita on occasion. Every time I see her, she looks just fine. Not jaw-dropping fantastic, but not at all ita.

I feel the same, but honestly after watching a few marathons of the show it's obvious that most of the people who end up on the show often either a)don't know what's appropriate to wear and when (I would not where the same thing I wear to class/a con as I would to any kind of work environment) or b)think it's too vain to care even a little bit about their appearance and VANITY IS BAD. It's always interesting when they're a mix of both.

In my case they probably want me to dress as I did when I worked at Lord&Taylor with a business casual dress code. (And let me say that I've done their job and it's not fun when you have to take a 20-something seriously when she's asking if she has to wear socks/hosiery with a suit and if flip flops would be okay. I WORK A DUMB RETAIL JOB AND CAN'T EVEN WEAR PEEP TOES don't you dare wear sandals with a suit to a fucking business office.)

In fairness, although the girl in question was completely adorable, she really could have done with some hair styling and makeup, but it's like they just completely ignored everything she said (even though they said they'd take her personal style into account) and dressed her in whatever they thought looked nice, not caring about how visibly uncomfortable she was.

Maybe it was her first boyfriend. It was mentioned they had wedding plans. I don't think the breakup is the reason for her immaturity, they just seem to think it's the reason she's withdrawn from social life and spends all her time gaming.

Overall, the girl seemed to be really out of touch with reality. She seems to prefer virtual life, and they can't get her to conceptualize herself in her new clothes until they put it into the framework of a "fantasy" version of herself. The girl didn't seem to really grasp the real world, but maybe beyond getting her a new wardrobe, her family should get her some counseling. There's more than a bad breakup here, and it's beyond "I'm an introvert." It's like she never grew up and matured past 12.

I disagree. Sure I can't afford brand new designer clothes right off the rack, but I know how look for sales and pick out better quality items at cheap stores.
My favorite cardigan is from Target of all places and I've had it for years and it's still in great condition and I get compliments on it.
And like >>6547087 said, secondhand stores are great. Americans buy too much stuff and donate really nice barely-used items and stores sometimes donate overstocked items. A thrift store in my city gets a bunch of stuff from BCBG every season.

She mentioned how different races dressed differently, regardless of money.

White kids considered themselves "dressed up" because they had new Vans, and Levi's etc.

Black/Hispanic/Asian Kids had new dresses and suits with a strand of purls.

Of course I'm not saying everyone of the same race dressed that way, just the majority.

It's definitely how you're raised. I went to a poor high school, about half the student body was always wearing either sweatpants or pajama pants. I had been homeschooled before high school, so I had developed a love of blazers and black pants (not to mention jeans made my legs break out in a rash). The first day I walked in, everyone assumed I was a teacher. And when I told them I liked those clothes, they kept talking about comfort. Why do so many people think good clothes are uncomfortable, anyway? Starchy jeans vs. black dress pants? They really think the denim feels good? I tried a pair of softer, acrylic jeans and a t-shirt for a day, and it was LESS comfortable (However, I did get a laugh from the teachers, since I accidentally did it on casual Friday).

Urgh, Hotter Than My Daughter is an example of a REALLY bad British makeover show, and that's the reason why it only lasted into it's second season before getting shut down.

Snog, Marry, Avoid? on the other hand I'd say is pretty spectacular. I think the majority of the time the makeovers are more hit then miss, it's rare that I've ever seen the person come out on the other end looking worse.

I think the best one they ever did was this guy, he turned out really cute in the end.

Knowing how much the presenter hates cat t-shirts, I think we may have a winner.

But PT also has the "issues" that they like. She has the "escaping from reality" thing, and she lives with her parents, so there's good TV potential in there.

It'd suck if they threw away her Lolita dresses, though. Perhaps if they were informed of what it's worth, they'd let her sell it. I think if they chucked out her cosplay, it'd do her good. As well as those nasty, cheap, made-for-tourists kimonos she has.

Gok Wan's shows are usually fairly good. He does How To Look Good Naked, Gok's Fashion Fix and Gok's Clothes Roadshow (which is aimed at fashion on a budget - I think he does outfits for £50 or something). Some of the outfits are a little... dubious, but others are good, and he talks a lot about dressing for your body type and such, and gives actual information. He also doesn't tear into the people on his shows or go on at length about their personal lives, for the most part.

As makeover shows go, I feel like Snog, Marry, Avoid is the best

When someone comes on who's individual (punky, slutty, super cutesy), they tend to try to keep it, just a lesser version of it.

The whole almost basing it off whether random people would want to get with you does annoy me a bit, though. One of my favorite makeover was a really punk lesbian couple, even though they decided not to keep it.

I'm glad they don't seem to give their possible makeover subjects too much shit like all the shows (and when they do it's usually easily laughed off, not downright rude/mean like What Not to Wear often is). I do think the whole public analysis is really silly, too. If you have someone heavily into a subculture like goth/punk of course the random person on the street is much more likely to say avoid. Doesn't mean they look awful though! (Though some truly, truly have looked awful.)

I love Snog, Marry, Avoid. There's actually been many times in the show where they showed someone with an "outlandish" style but actually didn't give them a make-over.

One time, it was two goth/raver/industrial kind of style (does it have a name? Cause if it does I don't know) girls and it was basically said that they have time to grow into something tamer so they should have fun cause they're young.

The other was two adorable curvy girls wearing a kind of 50's retro look and despite their make-up and hair not looking very "natural" (cat eye liner and red lipstick, for example) Pod said that because they were dressed tastefully and emphasized beauty at all sizes, she wouldn't make them over.

It made me very happy!

Referring back to Victoria on WNTW, my friend just sent me a link to the full ep. the other day. I was intrigued and horrified. I definitely agree with elements >>6546626 was talking about. She seems very immature and sheltered almost in a PT kind of way except this girl isn't trying to make herself into a star by posting photos and blogging and shopping.

From the way her family (re: sisters) acted, it made it seem like no one even tried to help her get back on her feet after her breakup/engagement. I mean, it doesn't sound like any family members said, "Hey Victoria, it's time to close that door and open a new one, let's go shopping and get a few new outfits for you, maybe grab some lunch, and a movie too." It seemed more like they were too self-absorbed in a "Oh she's just a nerdy gamer girl, we can't even try to help her so we'll ignore her and when people ask, we'll play it off as if she's just "that" family member. We'll let her withdraw into her virtual world."

I think that girl could have used some counseling before changing wardrobe. Yes I thought her cat print t-shirts were pretty 80's or old lady ish, but unless someone is there to help support the whole transformation and getting over hangups/issues new clothes aren't really going to do anything. She can still game, obviously, but just needs new activities to balance out the rest of her time.

Same here. Even if I'm just going down to the corner store I still put on something cute. I refuse to look like a frumpy mess in public. Maybe I don't dawn a dress and heels, but instead skinny jeans, a cutesy top, and flats or oxfords. I made it a point over the last 3 years to slowly change out my wardrobe to only cute items, that way when even in a rush, I can only grab nice looking things. Got rid of anything that made me look frumpy or dumpy or plain, or have demoted them to sleeping clothes only.
Decided all this when one day I looked at myself in the mirror wearing too lose fitting jeans and a t-shirt. I looked terrible. Dressed like that for years, and realized at that moment that I'm to young to look so frumpy all the time.

It only takes like an extra 5 minutes to put on actual pants and change out of sweats or PJ bottoms, and throw on a decent top.
