I'll wear lolita at least one day, maybe re-wear my TF2 cosplay another. The last day is a group cosplay for Okami (though I'm slightly concerned for my sanity in the next few months, because I'm 1 of 3 owners in the group who owns and uses a sewing machine). Sweatshop, ho!

Because the damn website has not updated in ages, there is no specific event I'm looking forward to.

I am hopeful, though, for lolita fashion events. If there was anything that Sakura-con proved, it was that many people were interested in the fashion, and willing to pay for it. The Harajuku Hearts booth was well-visited (and actually shopped at), the tea party at the Fairmont with the Chantilly and Atelier-Pierrot designers was beautiful and well-organized, and the lolita tea party within the con was overflowing (well over a hundred showed up, even though the number of available seats were less than half that). Even if there isn't an official booth or fashion show featured at 2013, several of my lolita friends expressed interest in getting together during the con, so at least hanging out and seeing everyone's coordinates will be something to look forward to.

That comes with the territory of being an overdone costume though, a lot like Lady Loki was. But thanks. I have a few ideas that I'm hoping will work. I'm actually going to do something different for the sweatshirt than paint that's going to give it the look of actual ice like it's supposed to instead of just...paint. I noticed a lot in the movie when he turns, his hoodie sort of shines. It's because the designs on it aren't designs...it's iced 'cause his body is so cold. I feel like a lot of people missed that. That was one of the things I was going to make sure to pay attention to. But who knows...I might botch it and then you can all throw it back in my face and laugh at me. If you haven't already picked a place to eat I would totally recommend this seafood place down on the pier. I can't remember the name of it but it has an arcade/carousel attached to it. If you head down the street towards the pier from the street the convention center is on you'll come right to it. We went last year and it was the best seafood I have ever eaten!

I could see the "no projectiles whatsoever" as a general ban to make it easier to sort out whether a weapon passes or not.
At a smaller con it's a lot easier to manage these things on a case-by-case basis.
Hell, I'm pretty sure the last con I went to didn't even do prop checks or peace-bonding.

This projectile weapons thing is pretty interesting. I was at the Metal Gear shoot and there was a gal there who had an airsoft gun with her. She had gutted it, put a cap on the end of it, and glued everything in so nothing moved: mag couldn't be taken out and the trigger wouldn't move. She stayed outside for the duration of the con when she had it with her, and she was just fine.

If you just have the shell of the gun, cap it and make sure nothing moves, are you seriously going to be turned away at the door?

Rules like these are always interesting. I know that AX has similar rules with weapons where if the gun used to have moving parts it can not be taken in no matter what the current condition is.

On the flipside I do remeber an incident at fanime last year where I took a painted nerf gun (with the firing mechanisim removed and gutted) to the peace bonding station and they approved it no questions asked. According to the guy, because of my modifications the item could now be considered a prop as opposed to an actual firearm.

Would PVC swords have to be peacebonded as well...?

Honestly, when I go to cons, I just don't get stuff peacebound. If staff tells me to, I say I will and then I just don't.

I'm not a stupid kid who goes around waving my props around and hitting people, and I've had stuff ruined by peacebounding. It's just not worth it.

The Peace-Bonding Coordinator made an appearance on the Official Sakura-con Group facebook page and basically said no guns, even if they are filled with resin and made inoperable.

Someone else was saying they had to scrap their bow because it was unable to be unstrung, and apparently all bows must be unstrung. Arrows are a no-no too.

Depends on price.

The Cheapest is either Green Tortious or City Hostel for &30 to $40 bucks a night, but you share a room with other guests. Green Tortious is closer and right across the street from Pikes market.

The Moore on 2nd Ave between Pine and Stewart is around $50 to $70 bucks a night.

Red Lion on 5th is around $110 on up and is one of the closest and usually almost always booked.

Personally speaking The Moore Hotel is the best for the price you play, but I always end up staying at the Hostel because I love to meet new people.

I don't think staff likes people lining up more than half an hour in advance. There will be a dance lesson beforehand which usually takes place right before the actual ball and then everyone is cleared out to allow us a little time to get set up.

Here is something that has been a sucky thing about SakuraCon for myself and my friends, THE PARKING.

Does anybody else know of any more affordable options to park for the length of the convention?

My hotel charges $44 a night for parking. That ends up being almost as much as the room after dividing things up!

I didn't realize it was that bad, I was inside the entire time. It was probably a good move by staff, the majority of the people in the dance seemed to stay for the duration and it would have sucked standing in line until the very end of the event only to not get in at all. I mean, it's still lousy but at least they were spared 45 more minutes of pointless line-standing.

Anyone else excited for the Angelic Pretty booth? I flipped when I saw it last year. Trying on a dress was so much fun! I was too nervous to try on any more. I've been into Lolita for 2-3 years now, but I've never gotten the confidence to commit to the style. But the way the booth girls gushed about me makes me heavily consider doing it! Maybe I'll buy an op or jsk this year.
What can I expect them to have? I wish there was an easy way to look at all of AP's past stuff, since their website only gives their current Marshmallow Bunny print.

So this might be a silly question to ask in a SakuraCon thread but, is SakuraCon a consistently worthwhile convention? Even if you don't know anyone else who's going?

I haven't been able to do much cosplaying/congoing (or cgl-ing for that matter) in the past year or so because my life has been super busy, but I am dying to get back to it. I've finally got a little more free time and schedule flexibility now, but I have non-movable conflicts during the spring/early summer cons I would normally like to attend. I have never been to SakuraCon, or even Seattle, but SC falls at a perfect time (the beginning of my spring break, and as a bonus, it's also the weekend after my birthday) and would not be unreasonable travel and cost-wise. I wouldn't be able to finish anything major in the cosplay department, but that doesn't bother me too much. I'm just wondering if it would be worth it. Is there a lot to do? Is this a must-go con for you? Would not knowing anyone or attending before make it significantly less enjoyable?

I'd say that you should check through last year's schedule, see if you like the panels. If you're going to be by yourself, busying yourself with panels is a good idea. The merch hall is certainly impressive too. There's also anime rooms that are screening shows all day, so check their schedule and see what'll be airing.
I've gone alone several times, and I've loved it every time. I'm pretty sure last year everyone came together on the forums to get the photoshoot times in one place, and I'm sure we'll post that in this thread when the time comes.

I'd love to discuss with you on why it would have been better if it had come out now vs when it did. How well written a game is shouldn't be influenced by when it came out. But I think the games were great for their time, more specifically G.U., IMO the best of the series. A combination of great graphics, fun game play, and a real game within a game!

Yay! I wanted to do Rivaille originally but switched to Mikasa because she makes a cuter couple with Eren.

We thought they would be good choices because sewing isn't her thing but they have lots of props, plus we really love the characters and series and wanted to do it before the potential flood the anime might cause.

The gear is probably the most exciting part. Luckily I work somewhere that has pretty much an unlimited amount of cardboard, vinyl and pvc tubing so we've just a lot of junk to worth with.

The only part we're worried about is people knocking into our side sheaths, but we're probably going to make them removable for crowded areas.

We're trying to make the gas chambers (lol) able to open so we can use them to stash stuff.

I'm also not sure if they will want to peacebond our swords to the sheaths, that would suck. They're not very realistic and are pretty flat... but we'll see I guess.

I have the feeling you will be asked for the 3d maneuver blades to be peacebonded (PB). If they asked for the blades to be PB to the sheaths. In the worse case, ask them to give you extra PB tape so you can break the PB seal of the blade and sheath when in a shoot. After the shoot, retie the PB tape to the blade and sheath.

Hi Sakuracon thread. Not sure where to ask this... I'm a poorfag and have never been to a con before. Is there a way to travel, attend the con, eat, and find a place to sleep for less than $400 total? I'll be travelling from Los Angeles (unless I get sent back to the midwest).

Watching the nico streams every year makes me happy. ;_;

I'd still be down for a meetup around the ball while everyone's looking all spiffy.
As for day 0, I'm still planning on spending pretty much the entire evening at the Sheriton pool.
I'll be staying at the Crown Plaza, but have a few friends rooming at the Sheriton who'll be there to let us in, if anyone's interested.

Could look at various means of transport - bus, plane or train. Also, find someone to room with, which will probably bring hotel + badge to around $150-250.
And bring your own food, if at all possible. Just eat whenever you make a trip to the room, rather than eating out all weekend.
