The more cons I go to the more I cherish Anime North. Really looking forward to getting some shit done this year, lots of panels, lots of photos, email me and we can get together for some shoots~

Yaaaay Anime North

What's everyone cosplaying and how's your progress coming along?

I'll be going as Cubone, Pocahontas and Marceline. Got nothing really started except for having ordered the wigs. Looking to go fabric shopping sometime this week.

Toronto people, anyone know a good fabric store on Queen Street West? There's so many I never have time to compare all of them. The Fabricland near me closed down and all I need is some simple fleece.

For the first time in years, I am actually doing more anime things than game things this year. I will be doing Yukio and dragging my friend around as Rin from Ao no/Blue Exorcist, I'm also working on a "Butterfree Trainer" things that I have had in the back of my mind for a while, and, if I can get up the nerve and can find a group to go with, I may do Sailor Uranus as well.

Now the progress on these is not great though. So far, I have nothing...

Also keep in mind any small static or recorded imperfection will be doubled when played on the sound system.

Also will you get drunk and then beat up foreign cab drivers whilst cussing them out racially and asking them if they know who you are?
Gotta stay in character.

Also a friend of mine got me to watch Love/Hate, it's got Robert Sheehan (Nathan) and Aidan Gillen (Little Finger from Game of Thrones / Carcetti from The Wire). It can be kind of soapy, but the native irish accents keep it interesting. So yea, if you liked them, give it a watch.

Avoid all homestuck cosplayers.
Doubletree usually has the best panels.
Merch section is typical, overpriced stuff you could easily get online. Usually if you try, you can get a deal on the last day.
Artists alley can go either way, I know a few people who do work there, it can be good or bad accordingly.

- The main Tim Hortons is always packed, but there's a smaller drive-thru style one further back in the same parking lot that serves the full menu (except for ice cream).

- The shuttle bus has to fight its way through the crowds to the back of the TCC, so it is usually slower than walking over the overpass.

- Taking the GO bus from Yorkdale to the con is faster and more pleasant (guaranteed seat, luggage compartment under the bus like a Greyhound) than taking the TTC bus from Lawrence West station. If you're waiting for the GO bus at the con, make sure to wave it down or the driver will assume you're waiting for the more frequent TTC bus.

$1.2 Million.
That's a conservative estimate of how much they make on badges if everyone paid the minimum amount possible and taking into account the attendance cap.

Take away from that the booking costs of the south TCC, 5 hotel spaces and the expense of the con guests and other outside costs, as well as overhead...
I dunno, I still think they'd have enough, and they wouldn't need to cap attendance again for several years if they expanded.

Yeah the TCC management doesn't like the con from what I've heard, but they put up with it for $$$$. They still won't let the con use the front of the buildling coz they think the kids will trash it. So maybe they just won't allow the con to use all the space.

But yeah, nobody on staff gets paid, so AFAIK any money either goes into the reserve fund to deal with any future financial emergencies, or to charity.

>> No.6542459

>>6541687
The TCC has a funny view of their business. They want to be as "corporate executive" as possible in their portfolio and AN doesn't fit in with that. As a result, they frequently try to screw AN out of various amenities (like taking away a portion of the south building last year) and by restricting the north building entirely. It's been a gaddanged nightmare to deal with them, and their security is always exceptionally rude to attendees (not MTCC rude, but close).

So yeah, it's much less about cost and more about politics.

>>6541708
Add to that insurance, transportation, the year-round rental of storage lockers, volunteer amenities, staff amenities, etc. It gets pretty excessive. Plus, costs go up every year. ^^;

Well, a lot of convention centre facilities like the MTCC and TCC have an image they want to project. In the case of the TCC, it's corporate. Given that they're by the airport, they tend to see a *lot* of corporate business and want to continually maintain that image. Consider that AN is one weekend a year, and corporate is probably every other weekend of the year, if not every few days. AN may be a nice chunk of business which is why they rent to us at ALL, but it's not enough to steer them off their traditional image.

It makes total sense from the TCC's point of view, especially if the board is controlled by a more conservative bunch. Why rock the boat if you get perfectly good money from the demographic you target?

Regarding the "more space = more people" theory, it's a little tough. When you think of the kind of things AN has to do, it's about as divided as it can be right now. The thing we need is more stage, and more rooms, as you can see in the pic, the North building doesn't have much of that

1. Vidya Gaems / TCGs at the Sheraton
• Good use of space, almost never full past reasonable capacity. Bringing video games to the north building would leave a lot of tables/chairs/outlets needed, and wouldn't really increase the ammount of people visiting. Doll events and Vidya panels are currently held in the sheridan as well, which is pretty logical considering that's where all the Doll/Vidya people are.

2. Panels, Main Events, photos and video at the doubletree
• The doubletree is easily the most complex cog at AN, This is probably my biggest bias, because i'm a huge panel nerd, and don't see the point of watching hours of the same anime at a convention.
• How it works now: Panels last 50min and have 10min of leaving/setup time, all panels start on the hour. Lines form in the hallway, which may or may not be busy with people in line for something on the main stage, everyone in the panel rooms can hear the noise, especially if someone walks in late. Popular panels are cut off to prevent fire hazards
• How it should work: Panels last 1 hour firm with 15min of setup time, The photo area can be moved or reduced and the area left over can be used for stage/panel lines. The lines don't need to be specific to the panel, it's just a line to get into the panel hallway when the current panels finish. Popular panels are moved to a larger room reserved for the most popular panel of the hour
• Photoshoots and main events could definitely be moved to the north building but it wouldn't be worth doing just for that, because the panels don't really need that much room, and the video panels are rarely crowded at all.

6542864

3. Dealers / AA / Signings / Nominoichi / Reg at the TCC
• Remember when the nominoichi was at the Sheridan? and the TCG people didn't complain? and no one minded going over there to buy peoples shitty manga? This is another part of AN that I don't really get, but it only happens Fri/Sat afternoon, so I think they would be fine going back to the sheridan, the lighting makes everything in that closed off little curtain look gross anyways.
• Anyone who does AA will tell you that it's a horrifying battle trying to get a table there should be more room in the AA section, it would ~PROFIT~ AN to do so. which is why I don't get all the open space in the TCC.
• Registration should be in a tent outside *drops mic*
• Dealers room is about as big as it can be, I can't imagine many vendors get turned down, it just needs to be in the same building as AA to make it worth it for the AA vendors.
• Signings don't need their own wing, make an elaborate line, use the long space you need and give more area to the AA/Dealers
• LOOK AT ALL THOSE ROOMS, those can't all be in use by staff, you could single handedly hold the panels section there

Artist alley people are usually the most desperate to get rid of their stuff on Sunday and you can probably strike up better deals as with the dealer's room.

Oh and be wary of the closer restaurants. I know like Boston Pizza, some of them increase their prices slightly because they know of the con.

Might encourage a friend or two and drag a third for their first ever conventions. I myself have only been to Anime Evolution out in Vancouver a few times (it's bad) and haven't cosplayed once.

I'm still thinking of costumes to do. How easy is it to show up hammered?

> like an Akira art book for $45, originally $120.

It was never $120. That's the ripoff price. Hell you probably overpaid even with the $45. Artbooks are some of the absolute worst ovepriced items in teh dealer room.

They actually did use those front rooms for panels a few years ago but because of TCC security it was shit. People couldn' find them and there were assholes at the door if they did.

I feel bad for the guests because the panels had lower attendence because of the above.

The lovely crap cherry on the shit sundae was when we hit 11:00 PM (and mind you, AN had rented the space until 1:00 AM or something) and a power-tripping guard came around yelling for everyone to leave.

Never seen Donald Simmons (AN's head organizer) so angry at a man. Staff cringed as he went after this guy. I gotta give to the dude: He's got balls.

I've asked this before, but I'll ask again...

Why the fuck do people think the 404s are so super awesome? I saw a video of the line-up for their late-night show last year, and it lead outside. I mean... really? Do that many people want to see a bunch of men awkwardly act out scenarios as 14-year-old weeaboos yell "YAOI!" over and over?

To each their own amusement applies, really. Consider that some people love and hate Louis C.K. I think he's a comic genius. Some people find him boring, racist, and offensive. That's a pretty common issue with any form of entertainment.

Keep in mind, a ton of people think anime is stupid and write the whole thing off. No accounting for taste.

>>6546093
Not at all. They're both really hip-deep in the nerd, but they're great guys and work their asses off for the con. Donald's got a temper, but it's hard to provoke unless you're an asshat like that guard was being. A lot of the "rude' idea about him comes from AN meetings. 300 people in one room? Yeah, the guy cutting people off when they want to talk for 10-20 minutes (and they have 5) is gonna be perceived as "rude" for just doing his job. But that's the life of the boss.

I work as staff at AN. "Mildly autistic" can apply to many, many people.

If you're ever feeling bored and in the mood for quality cringe, try and head down to the Doubletree on a Sunday afternoon around March-May for an AN staff meeting.

The room smells like sweat and salt and vinegar chips, people raise their hands to talk about pressing issues such as "we should switch the classic anime and old school anime screening rooms so that they're in chronological order from the front desk"

The ticket hike is no doubt to stem the tide of attendees, considering the show's been capped at 20,000. They gotta do something to waylay the immediacy of attendance. Raising prices is usually one means of doing so.
