You can't say a movie is shit when it has a very well written plot, likeable characters, and the most detailed animation in an animated movie for this year. There are a lot of possible reasons, also since it was Jack who came to see Jamie, who was at the time doubting in Bunnymund, maybe the light was Sophie, and Jack just assumed it was Jamie?

I don't get why everyone's in love with this movie. I went to see it the other day and it was kind of lame. Most animated movies, especially from Dreamworks, tend to try and appeal to both kids and adults. This movie just felt really... kiddy to me. It was pretty, sure, but that was about it. The old movie trope of "we'll disappear if kids don't believe in us!" is cheesy and archaic.

Also, could we please have one token Australian character who doesn't use "mate", "crikey", "g'day" etc. all the time? It would be like an American saying "y'all" and "howdy" constantly.

Honestly I went into it not expecting it to be that great, I wasn't even impressed by the designs since I didn't understand the reasons for them (particularly the australian easter bunny, that confused the fuck out of me) but when Tooth explained that they were all people before they became guardians it all made sense. They only thing I still don't like is that Jack Frost was too...perfect. His design was ridiculously simple compared to the others, and I think his character would have been way more compelling if he had more faults personality wise to struggle with.

All in all I really enjoyed it. Sandy stole my heart (and I liked him the least before I watched it) Jack was charming, Tooth was ADORABLE. Santa and Bunnymund were hilarious and I liked that the movie took place around Easter since I was afraid this was going to be another OH NO WE GOTTA SAVE CHRISTMAS kinda movie.

I'll agree with the other posters that it was an eyegasm, especially the ending credits and the music used. It wasn't catchy and kind of weird, but it captured the feelings of the first frost of the year quite well. The graphic designer in me was jizzing all over the place due to the font, coloration, and art.

Putting in my two cents here.

- Animation and art direction was fucking gorgeous, no arguments here.
- Characters can be hit or miss for people, but I personally found them loveable and endearing.
- Plot......... plot was a bit weak, tons of plot holes and head shakers, but the characters and animation/art made up for it for me.
- Atmosphere gets an A+ from me. I rarely see people mentioning it, but I think the feel and atmosphere a movie has is probably some of the most important parts. I felt giddy watching it and I loved it despite it's flaws, it gave me this golden hope in my heart and it was really fun.

Putting my input on the apparent lack of interest in the movie...

One; People aren't interested because they think it IS going to be the next Once-Ler and they're so against that.

Another reason, is the date of release.

They released it the DAY BEFORE Thanksgiving, it didn't have too much advertising outside of word of mouth, and so it didn't pick up until later into release. Most people traveled around Thanksgiving and didn't have time, others weren't even aware it was out all ready!

Also since it's so close to the holidays, I feel parents are brushing it off as 'just another dumb holiday movie' and not bothering with it and just waiting for it to be out on DVD.

Just my ideas on it.

Did we watch the same movie? I spent my entire second viewing fascinated by all the candy textures in Sugar Rush. Any chocolate surface had little porous bubbly holes.

Fuck me this thread has turned Americanised. Newsflash, guys, it didn't just come out in America, and in the other countries where it came out it didn't come out the day before thanksgiving.

And for the record? Wreck it Ralph doesn't come out in the UK until February. So none of us are going to be seeing this instead.

I suspect the reason it's not done so well is because it hasn't been advertised particularly well. Here, the released was a week before the Hobbit and you can bet that people are going to see that instead. People might be waiting for closer to christmas to go with their kids. It's had decent reviews, but the advertising was pretty bland so there's a fair chance that they don't have a clear idea of it and won't go.

It also didn't help that a lot of people thought it was just mindless kiddy drivel. Every person I invited to go see it laughed and asked why I was going to watch a childrens cartoon. And all of these people had watched WiW with strong enthusiasm. It was just marketed terribly.

Another thing they should've worked on is the star power. So many famous people did voices, and yet I had no idea they were in it until I actually heard the voices in the film. They could have at least released a trailer or two obnoxiously saying things like "WITH JUDE LAW AND CHRIS PINE"

But hopefully this'll be an overseas hit. Look at The Smurfs, shittiest movie in a while but because of overseas success and markets was greenlighted for another film. (Also see; Chipmunks, Madagascar)

I've barely seen one thing advertised about it in Sweden and when it was it was on screens in the subway where they flashed by for like five seconds before swapping to the newsflashes. Not nearly enough.
Also the translation seems to have suffered. Title is translated to "The five legends" (wtf) and I also heard that Sandman was translated to Sandmannen (Direct translaton) rather than our Swedish word for it (John Blund) which dwould have made more sense, as well as being more fitting for lip syncing.

The advertising is 100% aimed at children and just like with Brave the non-dubbed version haven't been advertised at all, you need to ask for it to even know it exists.

Dreamworks just hit a major full stop with the Advertising. Word of mouth simply isn't enough, especially as it came just betwen Skyfall and Hobbit.

Jesus what is so great about this movie?

When it's an animated movie (and a Dreamworks movie at that), you usually have to lower your expectations of the quality of it, and people watching. When releasing in other countries you do want to give them time to do subbing (And/or dubbing) while still not keeping it too far away from the local release date. At the same time you need to watch out for other movies, especially highly awaited movies or potential blockbusters/controversies.

And then again, advertising is much harder in Europe, where different advertising is generally needed due to different languages and mindsets. More advanced advertising = More expensive.

I'm a nanny, and I brought the kids I watch to go see RotG.
They hadn't even heard of it before hand but they jumped at the chance to go see a movie.
They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and so did I. I felt that the writing was weak but it was a very character driven movie that was fun for me and for the kids.
For those of you saying it sucked, get over yourself. Brave sucked, this movie didn't. As for visuals, RotG, Paranorman, and Wreck it Ralph are all up there.

Yeah, it is. The Dreamworks animation division is supposedly moving with 20th Century Fox, and I think they're recently unveiled their new plans/site, something like that.

With this though, it's pretty obvious that Paramount must've gotten lazy or given up considering its their last partnership work. They pretty much left it as is, and it's made its pay, so there's no super-duper loss. That, and How to Train your Dragon wasn't super advertised compared to most animation films and that really was successful, so they also assumed that the quality would shine hard enough for it to become another word-of-mouth advertised film.

20th Century's responsible for some other commercially successful films, so there's hope something might be okay, but then again there's plenty for it to fail there.

The pants that Jack wears are the ones that he died in back in the early 1700s. At that time, a woman wearing pants would have been as acceptable as a man wearing a flowery bonnet.

When Jack returns to the village after being reanimated, all he does is try to talk to people before leaving in shock and horror when he discovers no one can see him.

Given that he can't feel cold and no one can see him, I doubt the thought 'Hold on, I should grab some sinful, unholy pants' would have crossed his mind as he was being utterly devastated.
While Fem!Jack would probably get a pair of pants (or at least some underwear) it's unlikely they'd be the same kind of pants from the time period when she died

Contributing with a self-post; just did a first round of makeup test for Sandman. Definitely going to do the eyebrows and lips differently next time around, but any other critique would be lovely.

(Also draped the fabric I'm planning on using for the robe over my shoulders to get an idea of how the yellows look together.)

I don't understand why you're getting upset. And I don't ship it in..that type of way. Just that I'm like "Oh thats super cute, their really cute" and that's it...I just feel it's different if it's something already pre-established in the show as opposed to randomly grabbing two of the characters and turning them gay for each other. Okay, thank you for the input, I'll keep it in mind for my next round of makeup test! I've got three different shades of Ben Nye creme colors that I was working with: Yellow, Goldenrod, and Orange. I did a base of yellow and then went back in and contoured (although not darkly enough, it seems) with the Goldenrod, adding a touch of Orange for the nose, lips, and eyebrows. I think that next time I'll do a base of the Goldenrod, contour with the Orange, and just use the Yellow for highlights.

so i haven't seen this yet (and agree that it literally wasn't advertised at all, only seen gifs crossing my dash) but I do plan to. The thing is, I kind of.... look twilight zone levels of exactly like Jack. I'm not kidding or flattering myself, it's actually creepy. So the question is, should I cosplay? Normally I wouldn't cause of the whole retarded 'bishie squee' fanbase thing, but... like I actually look exactly like him, how can I pass that up.
