I lost my library of cosplay tutorials in the Great HDD Failure of 2012. How about we have a cosplay tutorial thread?

Why would you be offended when it's applicable to so many other series? Unusally-colored skin (blue, green, grey, white, etc) is rampant throughout fictional media. This could be totally useful for anybody.

I never got this tutorial... why not just use vinyl and save yourself time and most likely money on shitty fabric and paint?

>> No.6499189

>>6499176
Neither do I. Vinyl is pretty cheap too. There's always decent-sized pieces in the remnants baskets at my local Joanns (which is one of the smaller stores) and there are always coupons for at least 40% off if you have to get regular stock. Plus it can be painted with fabric paint if you need to add color. It takes nowhere near as much work or paint to do that as compared to painting fabric enough to look like leather.

>> No.6499194

>>6499189
It doesn't even look like leather. It looks like, big surprise, painted fabric.

>> No.6499196

>>6499194
yeah pretty much, and for the amount of layers you would need to do... it's also not as thick or sturdy as vinyl so not very good for belts anyway.

>>6499196
So glad I'm not the only one who wonders why the fuck this tutorial gets reposted all the time. It just looks like painted fabric and doesn't even come close to leather. Faux leather isn't even that expensive.

>> No.6499209

>>6499196
Only reason I can see somebody even doing this is that they're not comfortable enough or at the skill level to use leather or vinyl, or they don't want to spend the money on the correct fabric. Frankly, painted fabric seems like it would be more of a bitch to work with.

>> No.6499228

>>6499194
LOL ok ok... I was trying to be nice and not say it looked ugly as all get out, then I remembered where I was.

>>6499196
I think it would piss off your sewing machine much more than just using vinyl and a leather needle. Depending on the paint they use, it could cause gumming up issues.

Just curious if anyone's actually used these tutorials or think that the information contained in them is worthwhile.

Would I be better off reading a book on sewing or costuming? If so, are there any recommendations?

It's going to depend on what you are trying to do or make but yea, with exception to the "Use paint to make fabric into leather" and the mention of where the dude used PAX on contact lenses, I think the information in this thread is pretty useful for the tasks.

What are you making? People make requests in these threads and usually anon delivers so feel free to ask. Tutorial threads are my favorite kind on cgl.

Not on the same level of derpness, but I also had a "review" saved where this girl swabbed the shit out of like 10 pairs of circle lenses with Q-tips and tore the lenses, then claimed the color was rubbing off therefore all the lenses were counterfeit and that circle lenses were dangerous. I think her review, this guy's plastic bottle contacts, and the paint as mascara are my 3 favorite disasters.

I think you'd best be served by sewing lessons from someone you know or in a formal class. Pardon the overused analogy, but you need a good foundation to build a good house so with basic skills you'd learn from sewing lessons in person (whether formal or not) will be a great way to get started. Once you've knocked out the basics, you can get into more difficult things that raise the limits on what you can create well.

As far as crafting accessories and props that cannot be sewn, this is where tutorials on youtube or here come into play since most people don't have prop shops etc. where they can stop by and make inquiries.

I've played WoW for a total of 10 minutes before deciding it wasn't my cup of tea but I am a little familiar with the styles/designs. I think it's going to be one big-ass project to tackle for someone new to cosplaying, but it can be done if you give yourself enough time and have the budget to do it well. For something of that scale, you would definitely benefit from working with someone as you learn.

Alternatively, if there are other characters with simpler costumes you can make to "get your feet wet", that will help in building skills for a big project too.

I don't really know why so many people have injuries from open shirt binding...especially with sports tape.
Whenever I bind with sports tape alone it comes off my skin really easily, even when I don't pull it off or anything...I mean maybe I'm just using shitty sports tape?
I even used duct tape over it at one con to keep the sports tape from coming off like always, and even the duct tape started to come off my skin and it honestly didn't hurt that bad coming off later on.
though I did have a nasty heat rash from the duct tape suffocating my skin

Making stupid and nonsensical statements about my tone isn't going to make you seem any smarter. Now put your trip back on and answer my perfectly valid question.

I don't understand the mentality of 'I used something potentially dangerous without knowing how and hurt myself, therefore that thing is evil and no one should ever use it'

For the record, I've used both duct tape and ace bandages to bind and never been injured.
