Tall girls, Jfashion and lolita

tips and tricks

>> No.6499124

To get this thread going:
I really love Jfashion, but it rarely fits
I have the problem that dresses are too short, sleeves are two short, thigh high socks just come up over my knee, heels are cute but I avoid wearing them because I don't want to be taller than I am. there are cute shoes on taobao but-oh well, my feet are too big.

Where do I shop?

>> No.6499135

How tall are you?

>> No.6499139

1. Buy tights
2. Buy thigh highs from sock dreams (pay attention to the length measurements)
3. What size shoe do you wear? I wear size 10 and can find shoes on taobao
4. Get an underskirt

>> No.6499141

>>6499139
where the fuck do you find tights for tall girls? I've been searching forever. I can only find non-patterned tights at macy's.

>> No.6499170

I feel like OP is maybe a bad example. Her print tights call too much attention to the leg, a plain or very subtle pattern alternative would have been better. Also the pointed-toe heels are elongating her legs, so the proportions of the whole outfit just seem...off.

They're made to stretch a lot

Just check random department stores, they usually have some kind if patterned tight, especially in the spring and summer

Are Grimoire tights really only for people 5'3" and under? Has anyone closer to 5'8" successfully worn them?

>> No.6499797

Best over the knee socks are from Bodyline and Angelic Pretty, plus I heard that other big brands sell good thigh highs for tall girls (I remember Moi meme moitie, don't know about other brands). For shoes search for an*tai*na on Taobao: they accept custom measures and styles :)
For lolita clothes you have to modify shoulder straps, it is the only solution: you can ask for a reversible addition to a good tailor.

>> No.6499838

I'm 5'8" and I have some tips.
I have to say I am kind of very tired so sorry about any typos.
Alter the straps on jsks to make them longer, it will make the dress fall lower on your leg and I have a long torso so it falls right on that too if I do this.
I have made little 'strap genies' as I like to call them, with a button on one side and a button hole on the other for jsks with movable button straps, I usually just make them out of scrap fabric or doubled over ribbon, preferably ribbon with a cute design like polka dots or a color matching the jsk. They make every jsk the perfect length without doing any damage to anything.
If I am to lazy to do that, or things are last min or whatever, I will just make the jsk into a halter with some safety pins.
Do not tie the straps behind the neck it will look stupid, hurt your neck, and come undone.
Carefully pin it flat, I also recommend pinning it to your bra (I only wear sports bras, don't know if this is a good idea with normal bras) It redistributes the weight of the jsk and hides the straps all in one!
I pin it fallowing the straps and then just carefully pin it behind my head.
Don't worry about tights, I have posted this before but again:
Get cute tights, cut them off at the crotch, fold it over and sew it down with a loose stitch.(like a rolled hem if you fallow me)
Ether use a garter belt or some sock glue and WALA, all the cute tights/thigh highs.

Also, damn the police if you have thin legs girl.

I always have one or two underskirts I wear if some of mine are too short.

Former Chicago lolita here. I heard about this coordinate on facebook. She received the dress in the mail less than a day before the meetup, so she pulled that coordinate together in less than 24 hours. I heard from a person that went that she made that headdress herself a few minutes before going out. Considering how little time she had, I think the coordinate is very well-done. However, she would look much better if she lost 10-15 pounds.

I agree with you. It's an AP dress and a Baby skirt, and I wore it when I was traveling so I wouldn't have to pack it. I figured it was better than nothing at all?

Here's me wearing the same skirt with one of my super-short AP dresses. I like wearing an underskirt with that one because it allows me to wear a larger petticoat, while if I wear it solo, not only is it a minidress but it doesn't properly hold my larger pettis.

Not perfect, but it's better than nothing and few people actually notice it's two different garments.

>> No.6500031

I think that while Lolita can definitely be done successfully by tall girls, other jfashions are much easier since they don't have as many set guidelines. Mori in particular looks really good on tall girls. Provided you're skinny enough, anyway. But there are ways around the layering issue for girls who aren't skinny too.

>> No.6500038

>>6500024
Yes this. Or if she stuck to dark colors for her legs. Black tights would have looked so much nicer. The way it is accentuates that the dress is too small for her (short and it looks like it doesn't sit at all at her natural waist).

I'm also of the opinion that if you get such a nice dress you don't just throw together a coordinate for something as fancy as the event she went to. If she knew she was getting the dress she could have put something together in the week's time, or however long it was from the moment she ordered it to when she went to the meetup.

>> No.6500042

>>6500030
Underskirt doesn't work well when the poof of the skirt is different than what you're putting over it. Also ruffling- as with >>6500019 the ruffling doesn't match the ruffles of the dress.

>> No.6500044

>>6500008

Popular and rare dresses should be worn by cute short girls, not amazon land whales who can't coord. She should sell that dress to someone worthy of it.

>> No.6500046

>>6500030
>When would an underskirt not work?

When the underskirt doesn't match or it distracts from the dress itself. IMO underskirts are easiest to incorporate into classic because it's easier to find ones that go well, and they can almost look like a part of the dress itself. This is hard in sweet, due in part to the sweet, cupcake shape and in part due to the pattern on the dress (at least in the case of printed dresses). It can probably be done but I personally haven't seen sweet with a petticoat done well. I think it simply looks better to opt for tights or thigh high socks and accept that the skirt is a bit short. I don't get the obsession with reaching the knees anyway. If you wear a sock or tight that's over the knee, the proportion can be maintained.

>> No.6500054

Eh, I dunno, I don't think the underskirt she has is that terrible, I don't think it's something super noticable.

Probably. It just seems like a lot of trouble for something that, to me, isn't actually that big of a deal. I wish that more lolitas would accept a little rule bending in the skirt length area as long as everything else looked nice.

I don't think weight has much to do with it? I think it's kind of an illusion because her jaw is pretty square (giving the look of more weight around the face) and the white tights make her legs look bigger/thicker? I don't look at this girl and think she's too big for this dress at least... I just didn't like the whimsy boots with it heh... even the bright red boots would have looked better, albeit they would not have matched the red of the dress.

Tips and tricks for tall lolitas:

-Just like any other lolita, you will look terrible in items that don't fit you. Unfortunately, you have to factor in length as well. The basic length measurements you should know are your arm/sleeve length, approximate torso length, and how long skirts/dresses have to be to get to your knees or just above them, since these are the things that will scream out if you haven't got them right in your outfit

-Just because a dress may reach your knees doesn't mean that the torso will sit correctly on you.
-Drop waisted dresses and adjustable straps are awesome.
-Custom length blouses are also awesome. If those are out of your price range, consider plain knit tops with a custom dickey/wrist cuffs to give the look of cutsews.
-Longer-length skirts + short sleeved blouses are an easy way to start. No-one can tell if the short sleeves on a short sleeved blouse are too short for you.
-Knee high socks will never be knee high, OTKs will be knee high and thigh highs will possibly be OTK. Plan accordingly, or give up and wear tights.
-Don't shy away from heels just because you're tall, you're already tall so why not just be taller? (and stomp on anyone who gives you shit)
-Underskirts don't work with everything, but they can be valuable in adding length to plain-colour items or printed items without bottom ruffles, which are the items they work with the best.

-If you like sweet lolita, it's going to be hard to find dresses/skirts that are long enough because most of them are short as fuck even on the 5' shopgirls. You can still wear sweet, but you might just end up searching for a while to find items that fit
-Juliette et Justine/Innocent World/Excentrique/Millefleurs/VM are some of the brands that do slightly longer or tea length items. Meta/Angelic Pretty/BtSSB don't, as a general rule.
-You can rock the fuck out of aristocrat and not look swamped in a full length skirt, so DO IT.

I feel like tall lolitas should stay away from sweet in general, unless it's the kind that really veers into classic. The dresses tend to be shorter and the patterns less mature, and when it's worn by someone who isn't tiny it looks less cute and more ageplay.

I think the main problem is, as you mentioned, sweet, printed dresses simply don't tend to be long enough for tall people, so you get that painful effect of "trying to fit into my little sister's dress". Plain colour sweet items look fine on tall girls since they tend to be able to find them in sizes that fit correctly length wise. I don't think I've actually seen anyone tall in a sweet print that fit them correctly length wise so I can't really comment on how I think it looks.

tall lolita self postan! with tips and tricks even:

I agree that tights and OTKs are your best friend! I get tights from forever21 in large quite a bit, OR if all else fails and I find some cute tights that are just too short, I'll cut them off at the control top part and wear them as stockings with a garter belt under my bloomers.

when I buy brand my first thing i look for is if the straps can be lengthened (buttons or shirred), if not, I can forget it, every time I've tried without the waist has been somewhere between my underbust and my natural waist and it looks silly and disproportioned, and usually the neckline is choking me.

I get a lot of my blouses from forever21 or buy them at other US stores that have a taller 'fit'.

I also make a lot of things for myself or alter the crap out of cheap off brand too (pic related). I made a separate underskirt here and added the ribbon belt to give a better defined waistline. It's probably been the 'sweetest' look I've ever done, and it's more Otome than anything. If you can't sew, you can commission someone to make you a few pieces that are made to fit YOUR body, not an arbitrary sample size.

I only wear Angelic Pretty and I'm 5'8". But to be honest, I think lolita looks cuter when it's a little short.

I completely agree with wearing tights. Mine are all from Forever 21, Target, or Top Shop. I do wear ankle socks but NEVER otk socks. They look like knee socks and that makes you look so chunky and too tall.

If a dress is way too short, I'll wear a less puffy petticoat. The puffier it is, the higher the hem will go.

I disagree with the anon that said to wear big hair because that'll make you look taller. I think longer wigs are better because they kind of give an illusion that you're shorter. I also don't wear really big headwear for the same reason.

I am having some problems coordinating salopettes, also. I have Little Bear's Cafe, I'm getting Marshmallow Bunny for Christmas, and I just ordered Dream Fantasy. I don't think I'll go with the lolita label with them but any ideas on how to make them look okay?
