This panel seems like a good and a terrible idea at once. Steampunks "rules" are as controversial as replicas in lolita. Every individual steampunk has a different definition and expectation of steampunk. I know hard-ass people who don't accept anything that's not the very best, and I know people who are totally chill with unpainted nerf guns and cardboard goggles.

That being said, I'm sure it'll bring interesting conversation, but I wouldn't bat an eye if there was a fist fight in the middle of the panel.

Not sure what I think of this.

There should not be rules handed down even by a large group of well meaning people.

A lot of my favorite steampunk stories break conventional steampunk tropes.

If I was going to make one rule, though, it would be "stop designing random steam style outfits that mean nothing and going to conventions in them."

I feel like shitty costumes happen when people don't do any character building. Shitty steampunk fiction happens when no worldbuilding is done.

If you want to have elves in your steampunk world, do it. If you want to explore what kind of alternate history might have happened between ireland and england if time travel had been invented, sure, go for it.

Just don't go "lulz I has a brass octopus and goggles on my head and we fly in an airship and fuck you people!"
