Working on LSP right now. Friend of mine gave the awesome idea of adding plastic balls to mimic her lumpy-ness.

Will replace the white belt with a yellow one soon.

What else can I do to make this better? I'm thinking of adding balls to the sleeve hems as well, and maybe the neckline. Thoughts?

Heh actually I am a bit worried about that as well since I am planning on doing the version with the Goldion Hammer and the StarGao space booster backpack. I hit enough doorways for one lifetime in my Gundam suit already.

Anyway here is a pic of a test I am doing on a piece of bicep armor made from 1/2 inch EVA. You can see why I am not impressed with the results this material is giving me so far. It tends to look lumpy even after being hit with a heat gun and no matter how sharp a blade I use I cant get the 'v' cuts i need to the inside to get a perfect fold for a nice clean edge. The material gives too easily.

Was trying to use a dremel with a sanding attachment to make the 'v' for the fold but if you do it that way you run the risk of going all the way through the foam and it doesn't come out clean enough for what I am trying to do.

Suggestions would be appreciated since Ive got a metric fuckton of this stuff and no dough to blow on another huge shipment of Sintra. I want to use this stuff as much as as can since its less likely to get damaged out on a con floor than Sintra.

I mean if you actually take those proportions and scale them into a costume it will look like shit.

If you want to buy foam locally (assuming your in the US) you'd be surprised where you can find it. Harbor freight and tools usally sells a decent sized pack of 4 sheets of 1/2 inch for 10-14 usd. I picked up two huge rolls of 1/4 inch from a Big Lots for like 15$ a roll.

Also, tension with the stuffing is important to keeping the shape looking right. The little Ramiel has almost as much stuffing in it as the huge Sahaquiel behind it.

But with the feedback I've been getting, I'd like an opinion or two, if I could? After last Katsu with my conchita dress, I've been wanting to do something extreme again. I'm considering making a pair of large angel wings to go along with the costume for a bit of "wow factor". But that's going to be at least $150, and I only really want to do it if I can pull off the cosplay. I know it's difficult to cosplay real-life characters.
Sooo, opinions? I'm not looking for any validation, but I want to know if other think it would be worth it. Or if people will think I'm just some random lesbian in a trench coat with wings?

I plan on using my own hair but dyeing it darker, so here's how I plan on styling it for the con.
I still need to add some snaps to the shoulders/sleeves so they'll stay on, adjust the belts a bit as well as airbrushing the hexagon pattern all over the thing...
I'm not looking forward to taping it all off to do that. Any suggestions on how I should go about making the pattern on the costume, or is taping it all completely off + airbrushing my only option?

The only other feasible option to stencils is to screen print, but if you've not done that before you'll need to practice. Technically having a store bought costume arrive (or curling a wig) IS progress. It's getting them one step closer to completing a cosplay which means they've made progress on it. Woo anyway, point I came here in the first place. Stalled working on Lilith, it's been worn a couple of times so now I know what needs work.

From last time, chaps are now the right colour, everything is sewn. All the base parts are made. What needs work is making sure the boot armour stays on better (heavy duty velcro my ass), I'll probably sew some of the straps to the boots. Want to make the inventory box light up at some point since I ran out of time with that. May also get a new wig if I find a base wig I like better. Otherwise focusing on getting the tattoo's onto a body suit, because they took four hours to apply.. time to make a duct tape dummy.

Sorry, I don't agree. Proving that you can click "buy it now" on ebay really isn't the point of these threads. Otherwise these threads could easily be full of "I got up today and had breakfast for energy towards doing something constructive. PROGRESS."

A "progress thread" is not an institution. There are no rules or manifesto in which any post has to go by. Buying a piece of a costume and showing it can indeed be considered to be "progress" to completing a costume. Attempting to arbitrate how people post in a thread is ridiculously presumptuous. And most people would agree that pictures of how a cosplay is coming is far more preferred than some brat trying to tell people how she wants people to behave.

>> No.6468423

I kind of agree with ai-honey. Buying a costume and trying it on isn't progress. Buying a wig and just putting it on out of the bag isn't progress.

Have you altered the costume you bought? Styled your wig? That's progress. That's something you actually did. Posting a picture of you in a bought costume is just looking for asspats and compliment fishing. "TELL ME I'M PRETTY, I BOUGHT THIS THING."

As someone who used to make costumes for other people and watched them preen over compliments without ever giving me credit for the work, it's sort of insulting to see people posting shit they bought getting ass pats when people who are actually making things get ignored in these threads.

Not much, but it's progress! Started the headpiece for Raggedy Princess, but unfortunately can't do much else til I get the fabric.Adding more layers of mache today. Hoping 270 yards of yarn will be enough for her hair, only other trouble I'm having is finding her right stocking. Anyone know where I could get a stocking like hers, or am I going to have to make my own? I'd really rather not settle for the thin striped stockings I'm able to find

I looked through sock dreams already and even those stripes are too thin. Maybe I'm just being too picky, but I want the stripes to be a good 4-5 in wide. Love it! The pintucks and lace are precious and it has a great shape, my only tiny nitpick is the bodice looks a little frumpy on the dressform but I'm sure it will look better on you. I'd just say make sure you do a fitting before putting on all the finish touches.

I'd surmise you're better off making your own then. Since you want the stripes so wide you're probably better of doing so. I do have thee socks I linked you to though and can measure the stripes if you'd like. I also have those same ones from Pamelamann for my Stocking outfit and they're great!

I'm excited to see your Raggedy Princess though! I think it will be interesting and utterly creepy/cute. I like what you're doing so far and using yarn for her hair is a great idea. It makes me happy that people choose some of the less popular princess to cosplay.

Someday... I want to make Lemongrab.

I have my dress form adjusted all the way down currently since it can't be adjusted to my measurements right (ratio between the main 3 is too great). I left a bit of spare room in the chest so I could pad out a bit but otherwise it fits my body.

Same for me, I think it's natural TBH. I love the design aspect of costuming such as picking out my fabrics and notions and drafting patterns but I get so bored during the construction process unless I'm draping for a unique design. I get SO hyped for a costume and then as soon as I start to make it, finishing is like pulling teeth... and then I see three other costumes I want to make more and need to slap myself to finish what I'm doing.

I've got fabric for a few more outfits already and I'm trying my best to stay pumped about them. But I worry that once I dive in I'll want to throw the thing across the room. Granted if I could I would sit and sew for 24 hours because I love it- but life gets in the way and sewing in "shifts" somewhat kills the creative process I get going.

Oh hay I know the catwoman you're with in that ECCC photo. Weird. Small world!

Yeah I should probably post some WIP photos to my DA just to keep the thing active between actual full photo updates.

I know that feel too. I can only sew on the weekends and sometimes that really kills my creative drive and stopping for 5 days makes me lose focus on where I was and what I was doing.

If you're going to ECCC or Sakuracon you should shoot me a note, I would love to take a few photos of your work.

Small world! she's gorgeous. I'm going to make this slightly on track by posting some written progress!

Finished all my vectors for screen printing and applique, and have done probably ten dye tests now for the silk I'm working with.

I'm a little afraid to start because the materials for this costume were expensive and I'm going for a really vibrant gradient for one silk, and a 100% saturatd and even finish on the other. I have experience with dyeing but never on something so expensive, and never so much at once.

The test swatched look great but I am so paranoid there is going to be a splotch somewhere, or the gradient will turn out watery and muddy looking.

>> No.6472727

>>6472721
That's got to be tough. I sew between my work shifts but it eats up my free time- so I easily lose track of time and get hardly anything done. I guess the best thing is to just find a -good- stopping place, leave notes for yourself, and make lists. Seriously, lists, have saved my confused ass so many times for remembering just what I was doing...

I do hit up SakuraCon and other PNW conventions (contemplating NewCon as well but... yeah. Just yeah.) I'd be honored if you'd take some photos of me! <3
She has a really lovely Luka cosplay as well. I love her face~

One bicep exterior is complete. Made from 1mm sintra sandwiched at certain points for strength.

Im using a two-part expoy to bond panels from the inside this time around rather than super glue and hot glue. It should be stronger and I can sand it to a smooth edge if I let it seap through the cracks where panels meet first.

Waiting a few hours for the epoxy to set completely before moving on the the next bicep. Still need to cut a path for my arm and a place for the padding to make my shoulders appear wider.

I upped the scale again very slightly since I thought the mockup for the shoulder still looked a bit small.

Here is the mostly complete bicep next to the original paper mockup.

Most I will do to the outside is fill some cracks with putty or superglue then primer paint and weather.

Fairy progress from Sakizo! The skirt is only pinned/gathered on the dress form, and I have a lot to finish on the corset (waiting for the spiral steel boning to come in this week, but the rest is cut out and ready to go), and have to line/add straps to the top. If you see this, I might be able to help you with the whole gradient dying thing.

If you have a dye vat (or access to one, my campus has one in the costume shop so you could ask around?) the easiest way to gradient dye is to tie a cord across the vat like three or four feet up and run the fabric over that. That way you can sit in a chair a few feet away with a cord tied to the end of your fabric, just pulling it back and forth to make the gradient much smoother. You want to dye a little bit at a time, not dip it all in and pull it out slowly. Start by dunking down to where you want the gradient to end really quickly, and continue to dunk it the same way (but less fabric each time, if you know what I mean) until you reach the end of the fabric where you want the darkest part of the gradient to be.

I'm assuming that you know that color theory applies to dye, blue + red = purple and such.

If you can, presoak your fabric in water + soda ash for about 24 hours before you start dyeing. That'll get rid of chemicals in the fabric and keep it from spotting quite as much, and makes the fabric take dye better.

Can I just sell my soul to Rufftoon? Because between finally reading that 400+ page Water Tribe comic she wrote and cosplaying the Renaissance version of Pitch Black from those Rise of the Guardians comics she did, I pretty much have already. May as well make it official, put it in writing, sign it in blood- all that jazz.

Gonna paper mache this and paint it, then box it up with my other props and send it to a friend of mine in LA for ALA. It comes apart in the middle! Also, don't be fooled, it's not like eight feet tall- that's a very small door.

Q outfit update. Got it all lined the previous night. Am going to add some tulle to the lining (like a lolita dress has). I need to get tube horsehair braid for the hem though to get the shape I want so this isn't finished off yet.

Also need to figure a decent way to keep the sleeves on that don't limit movement.

I just dyed the feathers purple for her head wing things and the horns are nearly dry enough for me to sand. I'm worried as hell making her feet... sock... things and the gloves. I want them to look VERY claw like so I'll probably throw a traditional glove pattern out the window and figure something else out on my own. Also I'm using this found-in-a-diaper green minky for it that's perfect.

OI just realized that this is the first real "villan" character I'll be cosplaying. Huh. Weird.

Got up off my lazy butt to get my decent camera for this haha. Yeah I made sure to get the detailing. The dress is basically a big tube that I folded down across the chest to get the detail and fit. The skirt is the actual width of the fabric I used so it's all one solid piece. Here's a better picture (though it has terrible lighting, sorry!)

>>6489252
I was thinking that as well but I want to try somehow actually connecting them to the dress first. If that doesn't work I'll probably put hidden elastic inside them or something.... I finished the sleeves a while ago so I didn't exactly have very good forethought on that one.

Hello, I an mew to the world of cosplaying and I want to start by something small and get on doing bigger things if I like it

I want to buy this Dante's Devil May Cry 3 coat and pants for 10 bucks at addcosplay

The thing is that the coat is fake leather, and for 10 bucks it's quality it's going to be shit, and for what I saw in the picture it comes in a much brighter red than what it must be

I wonder how could I make that fake leather look darker

And for the weapon I'm aiming at doing rebellion but the hitl seems too complicated for me ( skull and ribcage) so I gues i'll do Force edge as the hilt is easier to make

Thanks in advance

I made a big bow! Sewing strips of silk together sucks, so the stripes are kind of uneven, but i'm happy with it nonetheless. I still have to sew gold trim onto the edges and load it with rhinestones. Everything looks better with rhinestones.

If i'm super productive i'll finish the skirt today but that probably isn't going to happen.

The bias tape was a bit short, gotta go get more but so far so good! Gotta fix a corner though. Also the three straps of gold are sewn on, just need to put on the trim first, then the snaps to finish it up.

And here is the wig. I'm awful at wigs but I guess this is okay. I still have to fix some things, and maybe add a few wefts. It's pulled up into an actual ponytail in the back, not that you can tell when i'm wearing it since the costume has a giant collar. The color looks weird here, it's most of an ivory/ash/grey blonde color in person.

I'm so excited to make the teapot/headpiece this weekend. Also no, the ponytail isn't supposed to be centered.

Almost done with my shoes for Mrs. Toad, so I decided to throw together a quick "closet cosplay" (if you can even call it that) to get an idea of where I want to go with this.
I'm not entirely sure how I feel. Although my heels put me well over 6', my torso is so long and my legs are so short which is the complete opposite of Sra toad. And she has a veeery short skirt
BUT this did give me the opportunity to try out Jenna Marbles's boob magic tricks, and I think they worked.
I'm really sad my makeup didn't show up that well, I spent a really long time attempting to get to that fine line between Charo and hooker. And then it hardly shows up. I'll probably go much more intense when I get my green makeup.

Polite sage because compared to the others I would hardly count this as progress.

Also, sorry for the wall of text for my half-progress. I'm just not sure if I want to go on with this cosplay or ditch it and spend that time on something better fitting.

It doesn't look very much like your reference, which is the only true reference you have, so you might want to consider reworking it a bit. This hopefully comes across as constructive criticism, because honestly you are one of my cosplay heroes!
I think that the armor parts of the helm need to be spaced a little more apart. They also need to look "chunkier" and more rounded, as opposed to flat. I know it's not finished but those are just my comments at this point :)
Keep up the great work! I love the scrolls!

Yeah, I agree with all points of your kind comment. The version I posted is already the second one and despite of it doesn't look so much like the reference anymore I'm more satisfied with it now. I made a more rounded and bulky helmet before, but because of a lack of the right materials the building progress was pretty awkward. At the beginning of this project I had a much bigger armor design in my head, but in adition I noticed that it would be almost impossible to transport such a huge armor with an additional weapon in a suitcase to the US. I decided to create a smaller and flatter armor and will work now with the essence of the Protoss design: Golden armor and blue glowing gem stones. So the main design of the costume will look more like a Wizard from Diablo III, but I hope people will also notice the Protoss by the choice of the right color and the details of the costume. I also don't really care about my reference anymore and just do... what I do. However thanks a lot for your wonderful and helpful critism. Despite of it hope you will like the final result!
