I got a shitty hand me down Kenmore sewing machine last week, and have had to teach myself to use it with only the manual and google (no one in my family knows how to sew).

The first thing I made were two striped scarves out of fleece. The first one I made was super shit, but using it as an example to find out how to not fuck it up again, the second one I made was better than what Heaven's selling.

It is okay to cosplay anyone while chubby.
Just be prepared for people being rude asses, because especially on /cgl/ everyone is judged by the same standards, in assuming that everyone is aiming towards professionalism. Thus if you're just out to have fun and don't put that much effort into your cosplay chances are you'll still be judged as hard as someone who works with costumery. Be aware of that and you can avoid it.

A bit of advice if you still worry about it:

Some characters that people won't really care about your weight in would be Feferi; Jane, Terezi, Aradia. Possibly John, Vriska and Nepeta.

It is all about making it work, Sollux is something I would discourage people with more fat on their bones simply because of how incredibly unflattering his canon hairstyle looks on anyone with a rounder face. It can be worked around but if you're not used to wigs, be careful.

Also, if chubby, avoid doing Equius unless you're actually strong.

I know this isn't Homestuck, but I thought that HSG might be amused to learn that cod-tier is putting her Ursula-style-makeup skills to use to, uh, cosplay Ursula.

I think the only reason we see chubby Terezi is because she's a fan favorite, and all the fat fans who only cosplay who they like, rather than who they would look like, all flock to her. Like a Hetalia fan to Prussia.

It's chubby Aradia that I don't get. She was a very active FLARPer and adventurer/explorer before her death. As a ghost, she wouldn't have been eating. As a robot... well, why the hell would Equius create a fat robot? And once god tier, she'd just go back to her pre-death body. How do you all feel about commissioned Homestuck cosplay? I realize the official word is not to do it, and while most people abide by that there are still others (like MF and Heaven) who openly do it.

I don't feel like people who can't sew/don't have the time/resources to learn shouldn't have to make do with default outfits, like those provided through the official shop.

But a lot of people seem to place all their anger about it on Rachel. She's a huge asshole, no one can deny that. Her behavior is beyond reprehensible and she's awful PR, but at the end of the day she's enforcing (albeit rudely) Hussie's own decision.

I feel like 'under the table' commissions are more appropriate. Like privately contacting someone and asking if they'd be willing to commission Homestuck.

Then you get the Heaven-type who are really upfront and out in the open about it to the point of being disrespectful. Rachel told her not to sell cosplays/commission on Etsy, but she just (publicly at the time) laughed about it.

Then goes on to sell more.

I think asking to take down the Militarystuck one was dumb, but it's not as though she was in the clear with her other cosplays. At the end of the day, Homestuck doesn't belong to her and she doesn't have the rights to do what she's doing.

Clothing is not protected by the same set of guidelines that cover non-utilitarian artistic expression. Rachel and her fangirls have managed to convince the entire fandom that there is some kind of moral and legal problem with selling god tier hoods, nepeta hats, etc. Clothing is classified as a functional item and has to meet significant standards of artistic originality (which Hussie's designs do not, cat-hats, extended hoods are seen in many other pieces of work including those in the public domain).

The only thing they would have a legal case against is people selling the kid's symbols and the aspect symbols, since AFAIK those are original creations that can exist in a format outside of the garment itself.

This is why you have Rachel throwing shitfits on tumblr and sending fangirls after commissioners instead of sending out a legal form letter like an adult. She has no legal standing.

Zodiac symbols are public domain and while the color-relation could be arguable, the shape and construction of the dress (considering we only see it in extremely stylized silhouette) isn't. They're altered and (I'm guessing) protected by being a parody of the originals. Whereas Heaven's Disciple costume is the EXACT thing shown in the comic. It's not some slutted up joke version.

Art has black shoulders, Heaven's are bare
Art has 6 stripes around the middle, I count 4 on Heaven
Width/Number of stripes on the arm
Art is (arguably) wearing gloves
Colors are different
Art horns are gray, Costume horns gradiated

So even IF copywrite did apply to clothes which we've seen above it doesn't, there's significant differences here that, provided nobody actually CALLS the costume a "Disciple" costume, it's artistically significantly altered and well in the safe zone.

I don't doubt that Heaven could be a lot better if she simply invested the time and didn't cut corners. She always has raw edges and loose thread hanging off her outfits, and her horns are lumpy/dented as fuck. Even model magic doesn't look that bad, and that's assuming someone doesn't bother sanding it or filling cracks.

MF I can't say as much for since I'm not as familiar with her, but the cost she put for that dress is stupidly high. Regardless of the time she spent making it and the cost of materials, that doesn't mean she can sell it for as much as she is.

I can use the finest paints on the most amazing canvas and work for days, but the fact of the matter is I'm not an artist. It'd still be a heaping pile of shit and the material + time investment doesn't automatically mean I should sell it for a lot.

because the materials are inexpensive and are easy to use. they CAN be made into some pretty decent things with proper knowledge, though. the first pair of horns I ever made with model magic were just terrible and I really didn't know what I was doing. Now, I make them carefully and fill in any cracks/issues with paperclay and sand the hell out of them. I think using model magic on its own isn't a good idea, but when teamed with other materials, can be nice.

Floral foam is my favorite base as well. If you choose your materials well and buy during sales or with coupons, you can make a ton of horns for dirt cheap.

You can get packages of six blocks of floral foam at Michaels for ~$2 with a coupon. Each block of foam will get you one pair of horns if it's Vriska, Gamzee, or Eridan, or as many as ten pairs if you're making Karkat or Terezi horns.

Delight and Paper Clay can both be pricey, but again, buy with coupons. Or if you can find a Daiso near you, get a pack of their air dry clay for ~$1.50. One pack can cover up to six pairs of Karkat horns.

Gesso can set you back some, but a 16 oz container will last you forever. Same deal with acryllic paints; mix your colors and keep them in airtight containers.

Bam, you are now armed with the supplies and materials to make a shitload of GOOD horns for your cosplay group for relatively cheap.

I wouldn't. Usually they're too shiny like you said, don't look like natural skin, doesn't match up with the makeup, and get folded/wrinkled like that picture of that Feferi in one. And once you get up to the neck it looks terrible. So yeah, wouldn't do it.

If you want you could use the armsleeves and make them go up to the straps of Feferi's tanktop if you don't want to color your arms, for the least. Just a suggestion.

Whenever I see people complain about female crossplayers not being masculine enough, I don't get it. I really don't. She's binding in the photo. Sure you can still tell she has boobs, but she's still trying.

I did a project a few years ago that needed a specific shade of green so I bought some regular white spandex from Jo Anns and some kelly green rit dye - I was banking on it not taking too well and giving me the pastel shade I wanted but it took the dye super well and came out way darker than what I wanted.

Whats your guys opinion on people shopping grey on for photoshoots? I don't mean selecting skin and hitting a greyscale button, I mean attempting to make it look good in the picture. Sure it's lazy but if you want to take pictures outside a con somewhere in public and not waste makeup or draw unwanted attention and get kicked out of places, it seems like a good idea to me.

Honestly, if you spend time on making it look natural, remember how surfaces reflect light in the color of adjacent objects (for example, a Kankri will likely have red reflected light along their jawline), I think it's entirely reasonable. I'd be open about the shoop if someone asks you about it, but in all honesty I'd rather see pictures of shooped Homestucks in a photoshoot environment than hear stories about Homestucks being an embarrassment in public places.

To be fair, It wouldn't be the worst thing Felixze has done.

One convention (It was Auchinawa I think), despite warnings from a friend the night before, I spent the day running around helping her get her shit together, cosplay repairs and photoshoot stuff. Missed a couple of good events and stuff. However as a thank you she was going to meet up with me later and buy me dinner. Seemed legit.

So time rolls round and she doesn't show. Spend hours trying to find what had happened and eventually found her, pissed in her hotel room, blacked up, eating raw meat and masturbating a monkey.

I pretty much flipped a table in disgust.
