Congratulations, Andrew Hussie, for making a clownpaint design that is significantly harder to make look right on your own face than Gamzee's.

Kurloz makeup is so unflattering on so many people. It makes most people look like their faces are squished downwards into one rather-fat moon-shape, and the ones I've seen whose makeup doesn't look like a disaster seem to have deviated from canon shapes a bit.

You can probably expect this outfit and God Tier Kurloz to be a bit more common later, and it'll probably be about 3/4 broadcloth messes on both outfits.

As much as I love Arda, I have to say that none of their oranges are quite right for Davesprite. 025 Light Copper Red is closest, but Davesprite is kind of... dayglow orange. Epic's classic orange seems like a closer fit, but there are probably ebay/taobao options that would work as well.

If you need the cap size of an Arda, though, then definitely go for 025. AR010 can be considered as well, but it's a bit too light. Stay away from AR023 (too red), AR011 (too dark), and AR 022 (more of a pastel orange).

Thoughts on Alpha Timeline Dave cosplay--I'm an old fuck and might as well work it. Here's my thing:

I'm a woman and moderately short.
A!Dave wears a sweet-ass suit and looks like a Hollywood supermimp.
Guys' suits don't come in my size.

Give me your thoughts on doing some binding and padding to give a sharp ladysuit a more masculine line? I'm trying to figure out where to draw the line between looking perfect, blowing a ton of money, and learning a whole array of professional-level tailoring skills by January.

have you checked out the boys department? depending on your proportions or if they have slim/husky sizes available to fit a bit better, you might be able to find something there

if not, the only panels alpha universe dave has been shown in he's been wearing a plain white shirt and jeans/casual pants, which while perhaps not the road you're looking to go down, may save you some trouble in the end if you turn out not being able to get the suit to fit you like you want it to

personally it's a huge pet peeve to see girls wearing women's suits when they're supposed to be crossplaying. suits are one of the most precisely tailored for one or the other type of garments. I guess if you took a women's suit completely apart you could recut it down but at that point you might as well just sew one from scratch (and it will never look as good if you've never made one).

Arda's wigs take dye really well by a bunch of methods, so you could easily get a very light Derek and dye it to the orange you like.

It'd be difficult to get a women's suit to look masculine for a couple reasons - One being the fact that most women's suits, just like women's tailored shirts, have darts up the front to make the shirt curve around breasts are sewn at the waist to work over broader hips. That's not always the case, obviously, but it's something to be aware of.

I guess my only real suggestion for this would be to buy the coat a size too large and then straighten out any curved seams you might run into by taking it in to fit? Idk. Men's suit coats are really box-y and squared off, so you want as many straight, non-curve-hugging seams as possible.

Oh, wow. This is terrible.

First off, this song is definitely one of Broadway Aradia's worst. It doesn't suit her voice at all, and it's incredibly OOC for both characters, especially for Feferi. Maybe it's B-A's SolAra bias, but Feferi is an enormous jealous bitch in this song when this was never indicated in canon at all.

As for the video, it's pretty awful. The location is boring, the shots are boring, the camerawork is bland. It's just repeated views of the cosplayers doing the exact same things in the exact same places. Sollux doesn't even move at all- every shot is of him sitting on the ground boringly. What the hell?

The Aradia isn't great. Started off totally bland to watch, then descended into bad acting territory. Feferi was just a trainwreck the whole way through. Some of her 'dramatic' acting attempts were just humiliating.

This made me really embarrassed to watch. I kept wanting to stop but I wanted to know if it got any better. It didn't. Lipsyncing rarely works out in cosplay videos like this. Badly acted lipsyncing is even worse.

The color matching going to be harder, but it really should be stretchy material. I don't have an exact type set in stone because I'm hoping to run around San Francisco's fabric district on Wednesday/Thursday to find something.

As for the detailing, I'd strongly suggest beads of some sort, or maybe the looped fringe some flappers wear. Just remember there's three colors!

1. Seal your god damn makeup and use GOOD makeup. I use baby powder; it's cheap and it works. For makeup, use Ben Nye or Snazaroo. I use Ben Nye using a mixure of white and steel gray. From me and my friend's experience they are both good.

2. This is a given, but be courteous/don't be a dick to other HS or any cosplayers. I've read horror stories about ruined cosplays to creepy men. Also, don't act like an idiot in public when dressed up as trolls. Let's not go back to that video of those pigs spitting in a bucket in a restaurant.

I can't really think of a 3rd one atm. Just don't be an idiot in public and put some actual time in the cosplay (wig, makeup, clothing) rather than throwing on a Dave shirt and sunglasses calling it cosplay.

It's a good idea to have a realistic grasp on your skill level: knowing what you can finish over a certain amount of time, and where your strengths and weaknesses lie. I.E., if it's your first cosplay, attempting one of the trolls or a fancy version of something may not be the best first project. There is nothing wrong with starting simple.

However, being unskilled is not an excuse for laziness. You don't have to go from zero to pro in a year (that would be incredibly frightening), but a good pace is to generally learn one to two new skills per costume, but no more than three or four if you're working on a few costumes at a time.

Also remember that sharing a fandom does not equal friendship. Everyone's got some pretty good tips, I think. Gonna throw these 2 cents in as well:

Don't expect cosplayers to be 'in character' just because a lot of homestucks are. Just because they're dressed up doesn't mean they're going to 'larp' or whatever with you and approaching a complete stranger and expecting them to just jump right in to your in character dialogue is really awkward and uncomfortable.

And in that same vein, being dressed as a character who is rude, loud, or unpleasant in the comic doesn't give you license to behave the same way.

"Oh I was just being in character." isn't a viable excuse for being an ass to anyone.

And last, but not least:

Or in a broader sense, learn to use makeup, regardless of your gender identity or presentation. Makeup has been used by humankind as a whole for milennia, now get over yourself and pick up that foundation brush.

Foundation and concealer help to even your skin without photoshop, and can compensate for the pale, pasty complexion us computer kids are prone to getting. Contouring can help minimize or define your facial features, hollowing cheeks and creating a chin where there once was none; it is also particularly useful in helping yourself appear more masculine, feminine, or childlike in general.

EYELINER IS YOUR FRIEND. Unless you're cosplaying a character like the Pyropes or Zahhaks, you will want to use eyeliner to help define your eyes. I repeat, regardless of gender you will probably look five times better in photographs if you wear eyeliner, versus if you don't.

Lips are another important thing for trolls. If you've got fuller lips and are cosplaying a male troll, it might be a good idea to not use black all over them, and instead opt for an upper lip only, or only partially filling both lips. Opting for a grey instead of a black may also be a wise choice.

And did I mention, SEAL YOUR FUCKING MAKEUP? And be mindful that, while you may not care about getting your makeup on your costume, other people will probably care a lot if you get grey on theirs.

I have a Mituna cosplay in the works and the one thing I need now is a skateboard. I budgeted like a shit, so while everything else looks great, I'd hate not to have the board (plus it'd be useful for getting around town).

What are some suggestions of where to check for cheap skateboards? I don't mind if they look like shit as long as they work, since I have no problem with sprucing up the board with the paints I already have.

(sanity-killer anon here) Even if you buy a lace front and work with that rather than converting a regular wig into a lace front, I recommend getting some pieces of tulle to practice the technique on. Tulle is dirt cheap, and you can use leftover fiber from a previous wig project as more sacrificial practice materials.

ALA 2012 is what I was thinking of specifically. Some friends of Hanyaan had been working on their WRYYYYYYing and were posing like that while in Homestuck cosplay for fun.

Cut to later in the day, when a few unrelated Homestucks are seen trying to imitate the pose. There was some fear that the poor kids might break their ankles, or at the very least fall flat on their back and look very silly, because they had no clue what they were doing or how to properly balance themselves for it.

I'm working on Felt Handmaid right now and I'm about to finish off the front of the shirt. Except I'm wondering just how to go about doing that.

I've seen a lot of cosplayers interpret the zig-zag on the front of her shirt with a bias hem. Looking at the art, I can see why they do this, because Hussie draws a much darker line around the edge to differentiate it from the rest of the fabric. But it just looks like he's doing that to show where the zig-zag is, not because there's an actual darker bias on the hem. So I'm not sure what to do.

Pros of adding bias tape: It looks really nice in my opinion and it provides more visual interest.
Cons of adding bias tape: It'll take much longer to finish the shirt (not that bad), and it's not exactly canon.

Should I just finish off the edges normally (left drawing) or add a bias hem (right drawing)? What would you do, guys?

Hi HSG, I'm here with a couple of questions. I apologise if they've been mentioned in previous threads, I can't for the life of me remember!

Basically I'm laying out the plans to cosplay God Tier Eridan next year. I have two questions (would have been three but there was already some super handy wig help earlier in the thread which was lucky);

1. Where would you recommend to buy a good quality binder from? It'll be my first crossplay and I'd like to do it right. Also I'm UK based, so I'll need it to ship over here.

2. What type of fabric is good for god tiers? I have seen people use fleece and have it look pretty good, but wanted a second opinion if possible.

Basically it's an iron on medium. You take the paper, then iron it onto the fabric you want the appliqué to be (in this case, the white for his jacket). Now you have a square of fabric with this paper stuck on the back. Then you draw your design on the paper, and cut out out. Peel the paper off, leaving an iron-on residue on your appliqué fabric. Place it on the main garment, iron, and boom, instant actual fabric appliqué. All the ease of an iron on with all the quality of appliqué. I use steam-a-seam and will swear by it, most of the time I don't even have to stitch around the fabric to keep it on it's that good. But sometimes I do because it looks more impressive for costume contests and you don't have to say it was an iron on first.

Feferi was embarrassing to watch but Aradia wasn't too bad, I almost wish Sollux had done more but chances are it would have made the whole thing even harder to watch with more bad acting.

Camerawork was very very amateur and quite bland but they made an obvious effort at least. Some of the shots were out of focus seemingly not on purpose (if it was on purpose, it didn't work well at all) and obvious shaky camera while walking to film something is extremely unprofessional though I understand it can be hard not to.


The location wasn't very interesting to shoot an entire video in but a few shots there would have been fine. Too much boring views of walking behind Aradia while she was walking.

Posing in general is a good thing to practice.

Whenever I do a new cosplay, I spend a good amount of time in front of a full-length mirror working on positioning my body and face.

Taking pictures of your face with a webcam is also a good way to practice. Looking good in photos can be hard, especially ones taken by shitty cameras, much like your average webcam.

The wiki says he uses 'Twin M9 Berettas'. It's still not cheap to get them, though, if you're going for airsoft. I got my pistols from Airsoft GI and both were $10 each, but including shipping it was about $40 for the whole thing.

If you want cheap, you'll probably have to buy a cheap toy gun and not airsoft.

MAC Fluidline and Maybelline's gel liner are good on the gel/liquid type side, and on the pencil side, Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencil and the black colored Dolly Wink pencil are good. Urban Decay's silver/grey pencil is also good for trolls who wouldn't have black eyeliner on.

Regarding transgendered people and cosplay, I never know what to do when someone is cosplaying as a character that has them presenting as their assigned sex.

If a MtF cosplays a male, and upon meeting them I refer to them as male (like saying to a friend "don't you love his cosplay?"), I am all for them correcting me and saying they're a girl.

But twice I've had people jump down my throat like I'm a terrible transphobic person for misgendering them.

I'm not trying to make light of anyone who's trans because I could never imagine what they go through, but I can't help calling you a girl if you're dressed as Roxy and not binding your double d's or cosplaying Dad with five o clock shadow.

Oh hi that's me. I'm never really on /cgl/. Someone told me the conversation going on, so I dropped by. In any case. I completely agree that the jeans are saggy. I have since gotten a new pair of jeans. Because Vriska is a female character, I got a female cut of jeans, whereas the jeans in that picture are for men.

Different Anon, from experience Natural Black is better for your own natural skin color, but looks a bit strange with true black if you've got grey skin, like Chronus has. Since it's a troll, using True Black would look less strange.

Left is a true black, the aforementioned industry standard, 1. On the right is 1B, the standard natural black color. As you can see, it's not as an intense a color as the one on the left, and has some noticeable brown tones to it.

Those brown tones generally look off when right up against the very-desaturated grey of troll skin, and it's a reason why troll cosplayers that use natural, undyed hair in an otherwise full cosplay can look a bit odd in terms of coloring.
