Oh god I fucking hate those books. Does anyone remember that one particularly ugly-as-sin one by some nobody American girl with the ugly how-to chibis and ultra blockyfaces? Man those were so hideous but I had the book when I was 13 and loved it. So much shame.

Grayxpurple doesn't really work with the purple accent.
Socks are white with purple when nothing else is except the lace on the skirt.
Blue hair = cosplay
Fug shoes - rocking horse style is very lolita but these are just done so wrong.
Black cuffs, hat, shoes and belt are shiny looking
Skirt is too short
Bad makeup
Pointed blouse collars are harder to pull off than a rounded Peter Pan collar.

I tried to keep the skirt print in the picture but at best it's pretty mediocre in design. Now it just looks boring, but hopefully not quite as gross as the original.

This book seems less ita than anyone that posts on /cgl/.

I guess the reason they exist is so that people don't have to put in any effort into learning how to develop their own style. Dear lord I had those Christopher Hart books + one actually decent manga book. Luckily for me I soon got more into surrealism and bought ''How to draw monsters'' and ''How to draw fantasy creatures'' books, which didn't have actual guidelines like step 1: Draw a circle with a cross. Someone explain why the Western "manga" style drawings that actually get published are always so... off.

Did anyone ever have this? It technically isn't a 'how to draw' book, but it did have tips and 'how this artist draws!' kinds of things. It had a whole bunch of different artists in it, and while 3/4ths of them were pretty shit, there were a couple of ones I liked.

My mom bought me this book when I was, like, ten. There were some REALLY risque pix in there that freaked me out. My friends thought it was really stupid, etc. Then everyone got into anime two years later and I could already draw it, haha.

I don't mean to call down all the fury and thunder of a thousand tiny gods on me, but... back when I was a kid that book was actually pretty decent. While the practical information wasn't really there in the sort of depth necessary for actual artistic development, it introduced (or for me, re-introduced) some very important artistic concepts.

Admittedly, that's at least 60% nostalgia, but you could have done a lot worse than Coope way back when. In some ways the slightly lackluster illustrations were more comfortable for a less practiced artist, since you could more easily match the product presented and, more importantly, surpass it.

There are plenty of webcomics and western animation with eastern-influenced art style that are popular. If anything I agree with /a/'s terminology of only calling comic material manga if it's published in Japan. They also call western comics manga, like what they're doing right now with I Kill Giants.

Anytime I hear manga-style, OEL manga or Amerimanga the only thing I picture is some generic Chris Hart or Svetlana Chmakova artwork.

If you really want to learn to draw Japanese manga-style, you need to buy some real manga and copy that shit. Copy, copy, copy, and when you get comfortable copying, start developing your own style. Of course you still need to learn drawing basics like perspective and anatomy, but when it comes to making your art prettier, copying artists you like is great practice.

Total Drama (at least the first 3 seasons) were brilliant. I can understand why people hate the show, but I thought the show was hilarious and . The way they developed character relationships and personalities really brought the show to life like a real reality show. Not to mention it was funny. Oh, man, someone gave me this one as a gift.

I actually got a couple of art books for my birthday and they were all really good. All the artist's had clearly gone to art school and the author's were usually different people, which shows they actually had to work in collaboration.

This one is definitely better than so much of what else is out there, though. The artist and the author are two different guys, the anatomy is pretty good and some of the character designs are relatively fun to look at. I'm willing to be the artist had either just finished art school or was still in it. Not terrible, but you can tell it was put together pretty quickly, probably because the publishing company wanted to hop on the "how to draw manga" train as soon as possible.

I still have this, it was rather good, mainly because it didn't tell you how to draw but rather how to make an actual comic. It also talked about stuff like dressing your characters, making them unique, common mistakes and actual publishing (which wasn't that useful outside of japan, but still).

And on the topic of international "mangas" I don't know i W.I.T.C.H. count, but that comic was really good.

I also remember another Swedish dude who made a how-to-draw manga book. Esbjörn Jorsäter? I remember it as being really dull and childish. But he made a few other good books on the topic of fantasy, realism and animals, so I suppose he was a decent artist, manga just wasn't his medium?

Anime didn't really get popular here until the advent of torrents and streams, with all the kids suddenly discovering shit like Hetalia.
