Does anyone else find the homestuckcosplayhelp tumblr less useful than before? I feel like the quality of the posts they put through has deteriorated.

So many things are just obvious. Like where to buy a red turtleneck. I don't need five different posts containing suggestions for that.

Whoops speak of the devil. I'm one of the mods, we're trying to fix that right now, the problem is barely anyone actually makes tutorials for stuff no one has done before anymore. If we had more quality, trust me, it would be on there.

Our main focus right now is not the new posts, but the old. We're going through our archive and making all the tutorials, links and tips easy to find and get to through character masterposts. Homestuck Cosplay Help is slowly turning into a giant archive of tutorials and tips more than a blog for new stuff because even though homestuck has an asston of characters, there really isn't much to do in the way of cosplaying them. In most cases it's shirt, pants, shoes and glasses. No one has anything new to say anymore because it's all already been submitted.

Cont because I forgot to say this at the end, but yeah, I feel your pain and I co-run the damn blog. I would adore for some great tutorials to come through the submission box but they don't anymore.

I'll get around 70 things in my inbox, and of those i'll post maybe around 30 and they're generally all stuff we have for already. Red turtlenecks, kid's shoes, if I have one more person submit to me a pair of black rim glasses for John i'm gonna die.

When I get some time i'm going to start hunting myself for good stuff instead of relying on submissions. Everytime I go to a con I ask people how they made their props or their outfit and encourage them to submit a tutorial to HSCH but it rarely happens.

bluh i've been having this problem with my grey paint where when it dries it goes really flaky and awful on parts of my face, and i can't find anything on google about it so does anyone here know what i should do?

what fabric does anyone actually use for god tier hoods? Everyone's always all "dont use broadcloth for anything ever" but when I walk into any Joanns near me there's nothing that even seems remotely reasonable to make anything out of other than that. It's all quilting broadcloth in every color, and then shitty satins and stuff

I love flannel for things like that. It is soft enough to be comfortable and drape naturally, but still looks crisp where it needs to like broadcloth.

I need some help too. Well, concrit mostly. This pic isn't that great, but how is the shape of my Nepeta horns? The base of the one is slightly more round, but it will be covered by my wig.

It depends on what you're shopping for, and whether or not you're only shopping at Jo-Anns! There's a lot of fabric that works better than quilting cotton (generally) since it's thin, wrinkles a lot, and doesn't drape very well. Outside of the quilting section, Jo-Anns pretty much only has basic colors in thicker fabrics/knits/specialties, though. So if you can get to a bigger Jo-Anns/any other fabric store, I'd take advantage of the opportunity.

It's super light. Some sort of floral foam. It's pretty soft, so it's coated in a bit of gesso so it doesn't get squished.
I have a thin black wire headband I soldered pegs onto. The horns have holes in the center of the bottoms so I can put them on the pegs, over the wig.

What kind of pants would you want to see on a Meenah cosplayer? Lots of people do the skinny jean thing, which I guess I wouldn't mind, but I'd rather find something baggier and more like... cargo pants, I guess is what I can call them.

I was planning on putting together a tutorial for the Jadebot I did because a lot of people at con asked how I painted the shirt/put together the face makeup. But I wasn't sure if that was kosher to just submit stuff like that.

Now that I finally have power back I can post a little progress here. Kanaya's red dress is basically ready for AUSA. I did the collar a bit differently, its sitting a bit awkardly because I couldn't reach to do the hook in the back. I'm not sure I'll be able to do anything about the gloves color...but over all I'm happy with the dress. Hopefully I'll see you guys there if you're going!

I'm planning on sewing mine jumpsuit-style, rather than trying to modify something pre-existing.

The zipper's going to go along the diagonal lines, sort of a subtle nod to the fact that Mituna can't remember how to take his clothes off sometimes.

Plus having the slight bagginess of a jumpsuit rather than a catsuit will hide curves and binding lines.

What's you guys' opinions on tight catsuit vs slightly baggy jumpsuit for Mituna? I've seen it done both ways.

I think the most canon would be relatively skintight, like a zentai suit. I would prefer it to be at least somewhat fitted to the cosplayer's body. When it's excessively baggy it just looks terrible, especially as a lot of people choose strange materials to make it out of like >>6373920 which looks like some kind of latex?? And the twisting/wrinkling of the looser parts of the glove material looks awkward.

One completely non-canon joke cosplay I would be interested in seeing, though, would be a kigurumi-type onesie made out of softer fleece materials, a play on the fact that he was given a helmet to keep him from hurting himself and the other characters tend to use kid-gloves on him.

I'm getting seriously discouraged, /cgl/. I've had nothing but horrible luck while greying my skin for Homestuck cosplay- either it gets all over the place (don't worry, I don't actually go to the con with that shit) or it's all splotchy and doesn't look correct. I'm usually very good with makeup and have been working with it for quite a while- just not in the "let's change our skin to grey" sort of way. It's kind of a bummer because I can sew, make nice horns, etc, but the grey makeup has me so freaked that I'll ditch all the work/time/money I've put into a cosplay as I'm putting it on because of it. I'm not sure what exactly I'm doing incorrectly, but, it's discouraging to see people who have never worn makeup in their life (including everyday sort of stuff) be able to troll-ify their skin adequately and I can't.
I think I'm going to try going a water based route next time I try to do something.... Any tips on applying Snazaroo? I tried one time before but it came out bizarre... I think it might because I was using too much water.

A normal hairbrush will pretty much destroy the fiber and yank out the hair. Unlike your normal hair, it can't grow back. But as a generally cheeper and easier thing to get, just get a wide tooth comb.

There's the option to make the skin tight gloves that some troll cosplayers use. If you want to go with body paint though, I highly suggest doing PAX on your body and leaving the Ben Nye/Snazaroo for your face. More info on PAX here: http://ffcosplay.livejournal.com/232131.html
I bought my stuff from FX Warehouse, and it worked great for me. I wouldn't buy it from any place else, because someone gave me another bottle of pros-aide that wasn't from here and it turned to gum and refused to leave my skin without heavy duty work.

For applying face paint stuff, go with sponges from a theater store or something similar. I found them to be much thicker than sponges from your regular store, so more paint goes on your face and doesn't stay absorbed in the sponge (at least that's the problem i had with even application with a sponge). Apply it in dabbing layers, do a light coat of setting powder to keep the first layer in place, then go back in and do dabbing touch ups. I hope that helps at least a little.

if you're screwing through the headband into the foam to secure them the foam will flake and compress and not hold onto the screw after a while

carving styrofoam is an exercise in running through an asbestos factory

Lots of reasons, I'm sure. The most visible part of the fanbase is cosplayers, and a lot of guys don't enjoy 'dressing up' as much as girls.

That, and even if they do enjoy it, there's the stigma of being somehow less masculine if you dress up/wear a wig/wear makeup (as if every male actor doesn't already wear makeup).

On top of that, not many guys ever learn to sew. See above regarding the stigma.

When it comes to the fanfic/fanart area, chances are guys aren't going to enjoy a lot of the same things girls do. Whatever they produce will be of their own interests, and if it doesn't cater to that of a lot of girls, it won't get popular.
