They might be on backwards. There's usually a rough side and a smoother side despite sanding what I can of the rougher side. I try to flip them every other day so they don't settle too much and have that kind of surface on them.

Not sure, but they look nice either or! I really like when people do more in character like faces.

I dislike the vast majority of fake nosebleed pictures.

I get a wicked high amount of nosebleeds (as in at least one a day) from some medication I'm on that makes the skin in my nose dry and brittle, so that even wiggling my nose can make it bleed.

Usually I put my head over the bathroom sink and run the water and wait for it to stop, and seeing your own reflection enough while your nose is bleeding makes you realize it looks nothing like the fake shots.

It doesn't run all pretty from your upper lip down to your chin. It gets in your mouth and makes you teeth pink and basically never has that nice little stream.

The Aradia and Vriska on the right look alright, but the Vriska on the left is all of an attempt to hitchhike on Rumminov-esque recognition with none of the effort to actually fancy it up.

The draw of fancytier" cosplayers used to be that anyone who wanted badly enough to recreate that costume would likely invest the necessary effort and money into it. Now there's "ballgown" Terezi from the previous thread and pulled-out-of-closet ensembles like left Vriska.

I almost had fancy dreamer Nepeta on my list for A-Kon 24, but I quickly realized that I wouldn't have the money to actually put it together. My friend is a wonderful seamstress and I don't doubt her skills, I just wouldn't have the money for the proper materials. You can't just buy the cheapest satin and expect it to look good.

Regarding the talk of shooping that was in the last thread, I think the main problem people have is obvious overshooping.

If someone has a spot of grey rub off during the day, I'm going to touch it up in the photo. If a cosplayer has some acne or the resulting scars, I'm going to fix that to. In fact, it irks me when photographers don't clean that stuff up.

Almost everyone gets the occasional pimple, and the cure isn't as simple as washing your face more. It can years and expensive treatments (like accutane) to really get it calmed down.

So when someone works hard on a cosplay, and then gets to live with photos of their pimples, it sucks. Acne isn't forever (even if it seems like it), so why keep it in? Why not showcase the cosplay and craftsmanship instead of the results of hormones and too much sebum.

A lot of people just staring to learn to edit photos go overboard to start with. I think kdoran is a good example of this. She wants the people in her photos to look good, but she goes overboard at times. It's hard to recognize when you first start.

Give her a few months and we'll see less of the plastic skin and lomo-filter crutch.

I've only had a nosebleed once, and it was when I ran full-force into a jungle gym as a kid. It fucking hurt and I had no idea what was going on until I felt the blood and it sucked so much ass. I don't know how hard you need to hit someone to cause a nosebleed to happen and I was just a kid at the time, but I'm sure it's not that easy.

It depends. I live in a nice humid climate now, but I used to live in an arid, almost desert climate as a kid. If I got hit in the face with anything, even a pillow, I would get a nosebleed. And in winter, even though it's humid here, the air does dry out quite a bit more. So it sometimes happens even without getting hit in the face.

I've been prone to them after some medical crap happened, and nothing sucks more than getting a nosebleed, really. It tastes like shit, it feels like shit, and you're stuck with a towel on your nose for a bit.

These are your horns, right?
I had just noticed something about them when I went to your DeviantArt for the first time.

While gorgeously constructed, your horns for Gamzee are leaning a bit on the Inaccurate side. They're curved too much.

The shape itself is right, Gamzee's horns DO curve that way. But in the comic the curving is a bit more subtle/gentle. Your horns are lovely, but they curve outward too much.

I hate to bring that up, since I genuinely love the work that you do. It's just something I had noticed.

She was actually really sweet when I met her at NYCC. She's also one of the only BNF cosplayers out there who consistently gives out cosplay advice, so she's okay in my book. This. That's how things like blinged-out Condesce got started. Pic related. One popular cosplayer did it, and now you see them everywhere. They might not be canon, but for some reason I don't think Condesces look quite right unless they're in high heels. I don't think heels work well on most Homestuck cosplays, but with Condesces they just seem almost necessary.

don't have a very good stock of Roxy's with good make-up, but what i suggest is very rosy blush- you can find your ideal color if you pinch the apple of your cheeks a few times and it flushes- that is a couple shades DARKER or pinker than your 'ideal color', and very warm eyeshadow on your nose and cheeks with big eyelashes and probably very slight wing-tipped (cat eye) eyeliner! and for the lipstick i suggest layering black and setting it with some kind of finishing spray so it doesn't smear. other than that, a pale-ish and porcelain complexion would suit the costume the best, considering i doubt roxy gets much sun.

I really just wish we saw more Roxy cosplayers without black lipstick. I hate that EVERYONE uses it. I think you could do a really nice Roxy with like...maybe a subtle berry color or something.

I noticed that with a lot of Roxy cosplayers, they don't really attempt to style the wig based on the actual comic. I'm a stickler for accuracy when it comes to little things, I've especially noticed that her little swirl thing is always facing up instead of down as it's supposed to be. Why is that? Also people sometimes mess up on the bangs.

Picture related. The only Roxy wig I've seen with the swirl facing the correct way, even though it doesn't look like it's finished being styled (as far as giving the ends a little curl and trimming the bangs?). Though it didn't look that impressive in the actual cosplay pictures.

Okay, cgl, I have a question.
I'm working on cosplaying as Eridan. The only problem is, I don't know what exact way to style the wig/build the horns.
Do I style my wig like this (pic related) or go with something more like the blow-outs that I've seen some Eridans do? Do you guys think it'd look better with horns that go up and back or just straight up? Just wondering what would be the best go-to.

I'm one of the Roxys that does the swirl actually worked into the wig like that picture (as opposed to bobby pinning a ridiculously tight curl which has never made sense to me) with the good, old fashioned heat and hairspray method.

My swirl goes the opposite way and, while I can only speak for myself since my wig has quite a lot of natural volume around the top and bangs, but it was just an absolute hassle trying to get it to go in the other direction and lay nicely, so that might be a common problem for all I know.

I've been meaning to redo it since I know it's more of a 'I just need to put a little bit of time and effort into this' kind of thing than a 'it can't be done fuck it' thing, but maybe that's exactly what's making other Roxys not try? Just a thought. With the amount of Roxys that don't bother doing the bangs right or flipping the bottom of their wigs, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

As far as addressing that particular picture, I know my lips are coming off color-wise. That photo was right towards the end of the shoot, where I had been "drinking" for my prop. I didn't seal my lipstick as it lost a lot of shine from powdering... though looking back on that I think it would be good idea to go ahead and powder them and maybe bring an iridescent lipgloss around to get the shine that's lost. That way even if the black is fading a tiny bit from the powder it's harder to tell from the shine of the gloss!

As for eyes, I like to use dark pinks in my makeup as pink is Roxy's thing. I usually use a dark rose pink for the crease/I create a small triangle/like shape from the edge of my eye up to the crease (if that makes sense? I tried to include an example in pic related as far as what I do technique-wise - I think the colors in this would be too dark for Roxy, myself!) and blend with a light pink on the lid. I then apply eyeliner with a small cat eye so my fake lashes look a little less dramatic. With that said, though, I usually use on the bigger side of lashes so that my eyes open up more in pictures. True to form? Not exactly. But this hobby is costuming and I've been pleased with the results. If you find bigger lashes overpower your eyes, stick with a more medium size! This is just from my own experience. I finish everything off, then, with a little bit of blush on my cheeks to give some color.

Sure thing! I wrote a small tutorial for what I did not too long ago, so I dug that up for a little explanation on how I got my wig to stay put. It's literally made of iron or something, it's been nearly a year and I haven't had to do much restyling and I love it.

This was my base wig, just for a little perspective:

And here's what I wrote about how I styled it, pardon the tumblr-speak:
"As for the flippy curl, mine is technically slightly inaccurate but twirling it the opposite way is actually very hard! It was for me, anyway. BUT REGARDLESS, whichever way you twirl that strand of hair, I just pinned around the piece [into the wig head] to keep it in its shape and [alternately used low heat on a blowdryer and sprayed it with hairspray]. It stayed really well, too! Only the REDONK Virginia wind was enough to ruffle it, and it wasn’t even bad enough to require fixing until after the shoot!"

You'll know you did it right when the wig fibers feel slightly hard, but aren't totally melted. Be very careful not to melt you wig seriously haha. Hope that helped!

Eridan's horns stick out to the sides but leaning back a LITTLE bit and facing outwards usually achieves the best effect aesthetically and accurately I've seen.

The wig still bothers me though, the poofy bit in the front is so wide compared to your face it makes your head look like a mushroom and the purple bit look sloppy. I think you should let some shorter hair fall down as well and layer the side bits so that it's smooth.

Yep, this. One of the quickest ways to tell if someone's shooping is to take an eyedropper tool to their skin.

Even when retouching photos where someone did apply makeup, 100% desaturation of the skin is not a good idea.

Trolls may be entirely gray, but you don't want a cosplayer to look like they hopped out of a black and white film. It's jarring and distracting, even when you can't place your finger on it.

I have no problem with people shopping their skin for WIP photos. Graying up is time consuming and often messy, not to mention you have to scrub it all off.

The important part is mentioning that you did it.

The mesh contacts do allow for some vision, but if your vision is already bad I'd just use them for photoshoots. You either use those, total white out lenses that require no photoshop but you also can't see, or you photoshop.

I actually really love that her mouth is open, because then you can see the thread pulling at her skin and see it crossing the slight gap of her mouth - the way it would if it were actual stitches. Kurloz cosplayers who have painted-on stitches can't do that.

The slight looseness in the stitches that allows for a picture like this is creepier and more realistic (to me) than high-tension wound-closing surgical stitches.

I did that pic at the photographer's request; it was the end of the shoot, I was getting really exhausted what with the no vision and muffled speech, so we took pics of me ripping the "stitches" apart. It was very therapeutic.

Thank you so much though, people saying nice things... There are actually a lot of pictures I haven't posted because I don't like how obvious it is that I'm really short and there are some things I don't like because rush (I did not actually intend satin shorts) so I'm kind of amazed.
