alright but word of advice: try to keep the costume somehow practical. Fighting in a dress is not excatly easy or advisable, and fantasy armors while look good according to some, they have the nasty habit of not protecting in the vital areas.

Also this woman would be ideal as a warior princes, although she is a little too dead but I hope you are not that racist about minor things like this

if you wear a dress or robe or something similar the important thing is that try to keep it not too long.
Optionally (for fighting, not for the looks) it will go down to the half of your shin, although if it's ends a few centimeter above your ankle it's still somehow manageable but can be tricky. Any longer than that is not that good for fighting and you will have a good chance of tripping in your cloth.
Same goes for capes

if you can acquire a chainmail that would be a good "accessory" too, although you will need some kind of padding underneath it. A gambeson or a doublet or something similar.
I would advise a doublet as there was more than a few fashionable version of it and also it can look good on itself.

depends on which country. Chainmail is the cheapest way and you could say that it has somehow less problems or at least different ones.
Plate armor... well it would be tricky. Mainly because I wouldn't advise online shops for any serious armors as the ones in online shops tend to come in the one-size-that-fits-none. MAybe it's just me being anal but an armor looks way better if it's fitted to you (and more comfortable too) this could be a few hours of kicking into a more fitting form or made for you from the start.

Although one munitions grade breastplate is manageable with proper padding even if it's not fitted to you.

So the question is that in which country do you live and what kind of armor do you want

All these pictures make LARPing look so fun but I'm horrible at that sort of thing. If I ever got into it I'd probably be that awkward baker or chef. Just there to hang out and make food for everyone else.. which actually sounds like a fun thing to do really.

oh yeah also: you can buy latex armors from larp shops, but I personally don't like them that much. But for larps they are good and because they are basically made out foam they are way lighter, and there are a lot of different version, mostly fantasy armors.

well I would advise to look around for local reenactment groups or SCA groups if they have any armors they want to sell and fit for you, but that's me being anal about armors.

Also another thing that I would try the local groups first is because online shops are prety much expensive. Example

this is basically somewhere around 500 usd and may or may not fit properly the buyer.

Then on the pic you can see an armor that was made by our blacksmith (who admittedly makes armor for piss cheap, but still)
In that form that armor was somewhere around 500 usd too

now chainmail as I said would be way cheaper and doesn't have the fitting problem. Or to be more specific most chainmails doesn't fit the the wearers by default but you can help it with a few belts, which you would had to wear regardless to help the weight distribution.
Also you buy a simple butted chainmail not a riveted one then you can modify with a little work to be more form fitting (and you can repair it too which is needed in simple butted chainmails as they tend to loose links over time)

aaand another possibility is a coat of plates or a brigandine which is small metal plates attached to leather or some kind of strong textile.

There are various kinds of this with various size of plates and various modes of the attaching (outside of the backing, inside of it, between two layers, with rivets, with cords, etc.)

then there is the possibility to use just a textile armor.
There were standalone textile armors basically something stuffed with so much staff that they were kind of hard. Of course offers less protection than a metal armor but if you go for the looks and you can sew then maybe it's better for you.
Also if you make a doublet or something similar that I mentioned before than you can always wear a chanimail with it.

so long story short:
If you want to do this for one event or two then my advice is get a proper padding and a chainmail. If you will use the armor more than a few times then you will need to look around, maybe find a friendly blacksmith and fit your armor into you.

Also I kind of forgot to mention it: you will need padding regardless of your armor. Well it's not a must have but it will be very uncomfortable without it. But people mostly thing that it is needed only under plate armor so they tend to forgot to wear any under a chainmail and then bitch about it.

well if you want to go for a a fighting based character then start with the padding first. There are a few doublet patterns with good description in that link that I posted. Make one and meanwhile/after maybe you will have more idea about where do you want to get with the costume

I think the most important thing is to have fun.

But if I have to choose between a good fighting ability and a good costume the nI would choose the costume.

After all it's a larp not a wargame, fighting is not something that you must do no matter what.

For example I'm pretty much shit at fighting (although my opponents don't know this at first) I'm more of a stabby kind of person who will run away from a fair fight.

That's pretty much bullshit and I was called an elitist because of this more than once.
Larp is basically a game of make believe and it's pretty hard to believe that the other guy is from a fantasy world if all he has is a Metallica T-shirt and jeans. Bad costumes are also illusion breaking so it's kind of important to have a decent costume

What would you consider an acceptable beginner costume? Like a person's first larp ever. How much effort should they put in when they're not even sure if they'll like it?

you can get away with surprisingly small effort for the first costume. Nobody (at least no sane person) expect you to make something complex for the first time. And you can of course borrow stuff from veteran players.
The precise minimum is depends on the game and the character but for example a fighter type character in a fantasy larp usually can get away with a tabard, some kind of not too modern looking jeans and boots and may or may not other accessories like a cape

so nobody expects you to have anything better than on the pic on the first larp or even in the third, but the problem is when people think it will be forever good and does not want to upgrade

well, a lot of things depends on the larp where you go. There are some which indeed forces you to take a class, but there are a lot more which let's you play whatever you want as long as it fits the setting and manageable.
So there are certainly restrictions in every game, like you can't play elves somewhere or orcs on another game, maybe it has primitive firearms, maybe strictly early middle ages, maybe it's full blown fantasy turned up to eleven.

But my advice: try to make a character that fits you and you are comfortable with it.
If you can't fight well and you doesn't even like fighting then don't make a fighter. If you not that good with speeches then try to avoid characters that will have to talk a lot like bards, poets, heralds, etc
