OKAY HELP A NOVICE SEWER OUT, HSG
I decided to throw a last minute Aranea cosplay together when my friend and I were having a craft day. I was working on something else and she offered to sew the pieces of the simple dress together, which I agreed to. However, she did this (?) and the seam is very lumpy. Usually I open the seam and then sew it flat or press it, but, I cannot seem to do that here? Should I just cut it out and sew the pieces back together again in a way I'm used to or seam rip them or what? The dress itself is very spacey and also made out of stretchy material so I'm not too concerned about it being too small.

okay, i'm not 100% sure, but if it's a stretch material, it looks like she used a zigzag stitch, which is what you should do, but she might have pulled the fabric too much when sewing it together which can create the wavyness? I'd just iron the whole thing and press the seam to the side and see if that helps??

She used a zig-zag stitch on stretchy fabric, which is correct, but it looks like the fabric got pulled a little during sewing (either she pulled it, or the machine foot did. Knits do best with a walking foot). Iron it carefully to help take care of any puckering/wavy-ness, and press the seam to the side.

Personally, I love the gradients. I love color blending a lot and I love carving grooves and details in to the horns like I've done with some custom commissions. I wish I could do it with my HS orders but it's pretty much time, supply and demand.

Hey guys, I want to propose a game!
Think about that cosplay that get thousands of notes but has something that really bugs you. How about some real criticism with it? No butthurt nor drama, just criticism about what is wrong/could improve the costume. Since we are aiming for more quality threads this is kind of 2 for 1.

Me first.
Looking at the ref picture maybe this come off as obvious but: Change your shoes for mary janes, socks with larger stripes, the beading is kind of messy, gloves that are the same model as the ref/are from a sheer fabric and not just lace, the satin ribbon looks way too big for the ref, exchange the tule for scalloped fabric (capelet)/ruffled fabric (hemline of skirt), beads on your symbol and you could really improve it some more with rounder glasses and a better wig.

I think this game would work better if people simply offered their cosplays for critique in these threads. Choosing 'cosplays with thousands of notes' hearkens to the 'find something wrong with it no matter what' nitpicking mentioned in the last thread.

I'd rather see people post their own pics and ask for critique which will be useful for them than for anons here to pick random popular cosplays and critique them even though that critique will likely never be put to use by that cosplayer.

I have been searching pretty hard for smaller-rimmed glasses, but I haven't been able to find any that I've been able to pop out the lenses for. My eyesight is really poor so I can't just wear anything, unfortunately. Anyone know any good ebay stores for rims?

I don't have any suggestions for specific glasses, but if you ever have trouble popping lenses out, we discovered that drilling through the center of the lens will help crack it in half and pop out; that's what our Aranea had to do with her glasses!

The sword depends on the particular convention you are planning on attending's weapons policy. You can either get a steel one without a live edge or a toy one & paint to look more realistic.
Sorry I can't help, but my Dirk has been handling his own weapons so I have no real places to direct you.

As for the wig, I'd make sure you bangs are out of the way of the hat & do you best to defy gravity and get the back to flip straight up because too many people don't even try.

Out of all the characters I cosplay, homestuck would be my last choice for sex, mostly because I'm nit-picky and would insist upon making every inch of my skin grey to preserve the illusion and end up making a huge mess of the bedsheets. Plus horns are breakable and teeth are sharp. I guess if you cosplay kids it's different, but then again, it seems awkward in another sense.

Yeah, dark gray is the way to go. Shaping is a big part of the masculine look as well, smaller lips just make you look more masculine. Definitely not the way that Karkat did it, holy shit.

The only character who can get away with straight black is Eridan, since he's actually drawn with them, haha. But even for him, I would not use lipstick; I'd go for something matte like eyeliner.

There are lots of wig spiking tutorials out there--search things like "wig spike cosplay" and you'll find a whole bunch! The old Cosplay.com forums are pretty helpful in that regard.

I recommend the old cosplay standbys to keep your spikes in place--Got2B spiking glue and and their Glued freezing spray.

Eyeshadow works, but I managed to find lipstick that works, too: I had lost my black lipstick for Roxy and thought a quick fix would be to pick up a new tube at Party City/Halloween Spirit/some other shitty Halloween store I forget which, and was devastated (although admittedly not entirely surprised) to find that the stuff went on to my lips grey.

I don't know if this is a good idea for all but I use face or eye primer on my lips before putting on black lipstick. Even with the shitty dollar store tier it goes on black in less coats and stays well. I also chapstick the fuck outta my lips before hand to avoid dryness and cracking.

It was just never a thing that sort of came up, since most of my earlier cosplays were male characters (in which friends did makeup because I was young), and the majority of the last year has been Terezi and Jade costumes in which no one focused on my eyes or I was told not to bother. For Fef I can see how I need it though, same for Meulin. Makeup is absolutely my worst suit because I have a terribly unsteady hand, so its going to take a lot of practice to get it to look right.

Crossplaying requires even more makeup than just cosplaying as you have to contour your face to appear less feminine and more masculine.
And yes, you still need eyeliner for crossplay.

Even with eye obstructions, it's a required element.
Glasses detract from your eyes so you have to bring attention right back to them via eyeliner, eyeshadow, & mascara at the /least/.

So fuck whoever told you that you didn't need to bother because you really do.

Roxy's great in that you can go a bit overboard in makeup and still look good. So some eyeshadow primer, pink eyeshadow & blush, and the usual liner/mascara/lashes combo would work wonders for making your face pop out if you're planning on wearing her again

Jade looks like you're not wearing any makeup at all. Brown eyeliner and a little bit of a more neutral color for eyeshadow with a bit of blush & a light pink or more nude gloss help with the illusion of being younger than you actually are.

Also this turned out more disjointed than I thought, but the point stands. If you work on your eye makeup a whole lot more than currently, and shade in your eyebrows, it'll up how you photograph and look in costume to a new level.

Hey, do you guys know any characters that wouldn't look too bad being cosplayed by someone really tan? Trolls are out of the question since my skin reacts badly with body paint, but I would still really like to cosplay! I've checked around but I'm not sure if I'm fooling my mind into believing certain characters would look good because I like them or because they'd actually look good.

For the record, Cancerously--I dunno if you're nervous about going into the big bad world of makeup, but I know I was about two years ago when I first started cosplaying. It's really intimidating! I barely wore any for my first few cosplays. But it really isn't as scary as you might think. There are lots of great tutorials and resources online. I really like Temptalia's website and the Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual.

As a whole I enjoy this cosplay, but I do wish the wig was styled to be a Rose wig. She has very definitive and, as far as I know, unchanging bangs. But a lot of cosplayers seem to just do a side swept look.

Hey seerofsarcasm here popping in to say one thing (I tend to stay out of my friend's convos on cgl for fear of looking like a white knight) which is that her Terezi eye makeup was actually my fault haha, I won't let her take blame for that one. I did that, and I admit that it was bad. At the time I had zero makeup brushes and used a cheap paint brush. Ive since invested in a very nice set of all kinds of brushes and have been practicing much more using professional makeup and think ive improved greatly! But I agree that I could have done her eyes much better, and will in the future now that I have more experience and the proper tools. I'm still very much learning when it comes to specialty makeup and sadly my trials and errors sometimes end up on my friend's faces.

If you're not a steady hand with paint, I've found it's helpful to get iron-on, tear-away stablizer to make stencils that I iron onto the fabric, paint, and then peel off. Just an idea.

The way she strays from the color pallet on Rose really is upsettingly awful. I know she's using complementary colors to be more ~artistic~ but (a) Andrew already covered that with blue, which is the complement of orange and (b) the small purple details are immediately swallowed up by the sea of orange. Not to mention she hardly even uses true yellow in the first place, so there's nothing to offset the purple with!

The rest of her designs, while tolerable, I think displays she doesn't know exactly what she's doing. There's something that spells disaster, I think it's all the loose layers paired with the chains and jewelry.

I used the tutorial and I was actually really impressed at how the final wig resisted tangling! As long as you use decent wigs, you'll be fine. And some Motions Oil Sheen. Again though, I didn't use it to make a Condesce wig.

In terms of body...I think there's only so much you can get. SOme Condesce's have achieved a lot of height with just teasing (like Ineloquentformalities, she's really great with wigs in general though), some have used clip-on hairpieces like Thighhighs. I'd love to see someone build like, a huge rig or something underneath the wig to give it something closer to its canon volume, but I also don't know how feasible that'd be.
