So at the NYCC Homestuck meet-up today, there might have been another marriage proposal.

Everyone was confused because we couldn't tell if it was serious, or just in-character shenanigans (it was a John and a Vriska).

If they were serious, I'm just confused at this fandom even more.

Are you doing a more humanized version or the straight up comic design? I've seen a lot of pretty decent Midnight Crews done up as 40s styles human gangsters and it worked, but if you're doing the canonical design it's going to look cartoony and weird. maybe get a zentai hood?

they look at least the size of her head. Your Aradia horns are well-proportioned, but if you follow the logic of young Handmaid having the same size horns as Aradia, the only way older Handmaid could have horns sized like yours would be if she filed them down (or shedded them and grew new, thinner ones).

Question for you, if you wouldn't mind answering it please! How did you keep the two extra-long bangs from tangling or getting frizzy? Many Handmaids who attempt the ankle-brushing bangs end up with wispy strands all over the place, but yours were behaving pretty well.

More acceptable than blackface. As long as not wearing the mask isn't a cop out because you want a short cut, as long as you still do your hair/wig, facial makeup for a humanized version of the character, I think it'll look good.

But if you don't still put the effort in, you'll just look like someone cosplaying DD who has taken their mask off for no reason.

Oh I saw the original post about it.
It boils down to she didn't want to wear her previous costume (GT Sollux) to the meet, so she just tossed on what she had for Meenah, a blonde wig (Sooo humanstuck), but then added her fins because she's proud of them.

So instead of looking like either humanstuck or non painted, she ended up with this really fucked up 'costume'. Which she then had photographed a lot and said photos ended up in all the tags and continue to be put in them

i've thought about this point and i agree with you guys! i'm actually okay with the thickness they have now. i think the problem is that when viewed from the front part of them are hidden behind my head so maybe that's why they look a little disproportional. i think they are pretty dependant on the angle the photo is taken from, which sucks, but like i said, i'm okay with how they look for now. for the next time i wear her i'll look into making them thicker and see what i can do about that- i think it'll partly be a balancing issue if i made them any heavier. i definitely don't think i can thicken them with any more model magic- does anyone know of a lighter molding material

as for the the question >>6310918 tacked on at the end, i'm not much help there haha. my long front bangs actually wound up getting pretty ratty, but they photographed well because they hung straight for the most part until around my hips, then from the bottom they were hard to tame. a big problem was that they'd catch on the buttons a lot, so i think i might replace the buttons on my dress for flatter ones. constantly running my hand down them and straightening them seemed to help though!

On a completely unrelated note, why do so many Dad cosplayers wear black pants? Is he ever shown in the comic that way?

This weekend was the first time I attended a Homestuck meet-up/photoshoot at a con (NYCC Saturday, and briefly dropping in on Sunday), and quite frankly, the "shipping" shots that took place disturbed me a bit.

I don't mind goofy photoshoots, but some of the people at the meet-up were so fucking young. There were a few girls who looked around 9-12, and they were going up for the "shipping" photos. And some of the photos were getting a bit physical.

Their parents were nearby, but I think much of the fandom was lost on them. Luckily in the few shots I personally experienced, people did get a bit confused as to what to do with a 10 year old when everyone is hugging and making-out.

The picture posted being an obvious example. (I just stood off in the back and wondered how the fuck a 10 year old can get through all of Homestuck.) At least I knew that her father was watching nearby. Though in another shot, I was grabbed into a hug by a particularly petite Karkat, which made me feel a bit awkward.

Kids and teens at cons get too caught up in the moment sometimes, and I'm afraid that something bad would happen if any scumbag realized this. (Especially since I know one particular creep with a bad history who attended the Sunday shoot.)

i use the tinfoil + model magic method a lot of cosplayers use. for the ridged texture i wrap yarn or twine in a spiral around the horn itself before it dries. you need t make sure the yarn/twine sinks into the model magic a little, then you can sort of pat it in place around it. wait a day or two before untwisting the yarn/twine. the indents it leaves behind make for a really interesting texture- you can increase the effect when you paint then by painting a slightly darker shade inside the cracks than on top.

here's the (kind of shitty- sorry, i use a laptop trackpad) concept i drew up in ms paint of what i think her shirt would look like according to the walkaround sprite. this is by no means canon so far, so i kept it simple and avoided adding any buttons or extra stripes that weren't visible in the sprite, to make it easier to modify if necessary later.
hopefully this helps! i don't have many close up photos so far but i can try to dig one up if you need it.

I think most of the people there were in the 14-18 age range. And while I'm fine with people that age goofing off with their friends, when you add strangers to the mix, it just gets worrisome.

I'm 20, and I don't like it when random teens hug me or get "personal". I don't mean anyone any harm and actually try to avoid hugging all together (I learned quickly that close contact does not coexist well with delicate props and/or body paint), but if someone's parents catch wind of their "totally innocent daughter" acting like an idiot at a con, I could get shit for it.

The Terezi in the photo (and a few other girls at the meet-up) were a whole different story though. None of them were acting chaotic or lewd (a few were running around and playing, but it was all very innocent and childish fun), and just seemed confused at the "shipping" in general. Luckily in that shot, all of the Daves around here were equally confused as to what to do with her.

I think it would be a good idea at photoshoots to restrict all close contact to older fans. The organizers of the shoots at NYCC stressed so many times that you MUST ask permission to touch other people, and many people did follow this, and planned some of the bigger spectacles beforehand. But even still, age differences can be problematic.

Hey I know this is late as balls but as a carapace cosplayer/fan I'm going to second previous comments in that using make up for carapaces is always something you should avoid. Even for prospitians, it just looks kind of out of place. I've cosplayed humanized Snowman and Slick in the past and just this weekend I was humanized Diamonds Droog. I usually do humanized since I don't like using a mask (It gets way too stuffy for me) but even when I did WV I was able to make a mask pretty easily. If you're good at sewing you can skip spending money on a zentai and try making it yourself. I also second anon on editing the design to fit and look less silly if you're going to do humanized.

you wanted concrit and literally the only thing I can say is contouring make up on your face. The paint is neat but looks flat and not really skin-like

I actually asked him about that before, he said he makes them out of a mixture of Model Magic and polymer clay, and also resin spackle.

I suggest maybe some facial contouring, maybe style your wig a little? I can't really tell what it looks like. Also your prop is really good, kudos to you. It looks a little silly in a hallway shot, but I bet it'd photograph really great if you were doing serious shots.

I really love how you did the psionics! You were at Otakon, right? I like the way you did it this time much better than the EL wire. What did you use for the lights this time? I agree about trying to make your glasses with only one light in each eye, though.

Also, your wig is awesome. There's not a lot of Solluxes with good wigs.

I agree with the awkwardness of the four lights, one big one would look a bit better, and maybe if they weren't so bright, or if they glowed more of their respective color (since these seem a bit white)

Hot damn, really appreciate the ups & downs

First bit, I use 4 points b/c the luminescence gives the optic blast effect I'm going for (pic related) and I can see perfectly fine through my glasses whereas a bulb in the center might block me. Not an excuse though! I will look into options for a new build =) Admittedly, the optic blast effect in the pic shows up less times than I prefer w/ con lighting

Yup, in hindsight, EL wire is so clumsy & not "lightning"-esque at all for any of the Captors. My lights were 5-LED flashing hand blasters this time I made by ordering DIY circuit boards; the arms are actually wires + cellophane

Less bright? I see that would be more photogenic. I maxed out what voltage I could on women's glasses (lol) so it would be visible during the day but I'll see if there's a middle-ground

I always assumed it to be a belt. Like you said, I've seen it work both ways. Add it if you feel like you can make it work. If it would look good on you then do it. Also at some points its not even there, if that helps your decision.

Generally, I do try to do a little more makeup on my eyes, but that day we were kind of in a rush and I can't do anything with those claws on, haha so no one could help me with it. It does look weird without it. :/ I'm glad you like it, though!

The horns look really great, but you really should brush the wig more out of your face. Try pinning it back the next time you wear the cosplay? It would be nice to actually see your face.

Also, the lipstick is a little light/the lack of eye makeup is really...odd looking. And..Yeah,sorry to just dig in on critiques, but those things were kind of bugging me, and they really detract from the picture.

nah, it's okay! I know my makeup wasn't the best that day. and I do have problems keeping my wig out of my face! I'll definitely try and put more pins in it next time, although by the end of the day they'll probably be eaten by my wig. Although I feel like the Disciple's hair eating everything is fairly accurate anyways, haha. I'm happy that you guys like the horns though!! I'm rather proud of them. c:
