It's pretty damn difficult, and unless you're going through a program like JET, you'll want to keep it very very quiet. Many of the medications commonly used for mental illness are not available (or not used for mental illness) in Japan. They essentially do not believe that mental illness exists.

If that girl doesn't have a 4 year university degree she won't be able to get a job anyway, since a degree is a government requirement for issuing visas. The only way to bypass that is to have like 8 years of documented experience in the field in which you want to work.

Some job applications ask if you have any mental illnesses. You can always lie. But lately due to a lot of dumbasses abusing drugs, they have been doing drug tests. You can admit you are taking those meds and get caught in a lie, or say nothing and get caught on drugs. It's tricky.

For the record I was diagnosed with major depression here and was given medication for it here as well. Some western medications have made their way over here.

I live in Japan too, and you are both right. There's all manner of trucks spouting ridiculous noise pollution at all times of the day, usually requesting you give them your used electronics, buy their yakiimos or kerosene in residential areas, and also telling you who to vote for, which new boy band to listen to, new restaurant to go to and yes, that all foreigners should DIAF. When they're out protesting you can't really miss the huge nationalistic flags everywhere and people yelling about gaijin into megaphones with karate kid style headbands on.

but i can say this. i know some people here in language school who are not very well off and they saved up enough money to come here and pay tuition for 6 months + rent/food, and then worked here. If you are on a student visa I think you can work up to 28 hours a week. And some jobs do pay quite decently- my friend works as an English teacher and gets 2000yen/ hr (about $25/hr).

So its doable, you will just need nice parents who will prove they have savings of at least $40000 to the Japanese government.

I dont know anyone who has done this in real life, but I hear about it all the time on the gaijinpot forums (http://forum.gaijinpot.com/forum.php)) so I think if you ask there you can hear how other people did it. I think if you come to Japan it is much easier to get a job while here than on the internet because there is always an influx of English speakers in Japan, so why bother hiring people online.

For the moment, I'll work and save money, research Plan Bs some more, and hope that I get on JET. If not I'll have to be a bit braver and do it independently.

If you want to work here, best plan of action is to aim for JET, getting your BA in almost anything but maybe learning a bit of Japanese and brushing up on your public speaking skills. If you can't get into JET, there a number of private organizations who want English teachers. It sucks, but you'll have an easier time if you are white and blonde. And ultimately, when you have the interview you'd better be good at pretending to be the friendliest, happiest mofo on earth (do research on the many forums about this).

Also, I didn't need to prove that my parents had $40000 to study in Japan? I just had to show about $5000 between my and my parents accounts (which is about how much it's going to cost anyway), and you can get money from student loans and show them that.
