Awwww shiiiet, I've been waiting for another one of these.

How many seagulls have their own printer for prints? Which one? What dimensions is it capable of?

I feel like getting a decent printer would save me some dosh in the long run, but the hassle of the ink deposit thing potentially drying out would make that purchase a bit of a bust, as I'd only use it around con season.

I'm hoping to get into Momocon's Alley in March. Registration is first come, first served, and they promise to have it be less awful than 2012's.

I've been falling in love with landscape layouts and bigger resolutions lately, too. I used to work primarily with 8.5x11, so what little I do have right now probably won't see the light of day.

>> No.6305840

>>6305824
Yes I have. Nothing too intricate though, if it's a simple design it can work well. I'll give you a better step-by-step for what I did.

First thing to do is measure how wide you need the cardboard piece to be, so you'll need the "flat" measurement of your leg in the area where you are going to be painting, if you need to know how to get this measurement just ask.

After measuring, cut a cardboard piece which you will use to stretch them out as well as paint on.

Try on your pantyhose/tights and use sewing chalk to mark along each side of your leg where you are planning on painting to account for front and back.

Then insert the cardboard with the lines you just marked aligned with the cardboard piece.

I usually try to draft the outline and then try it on beforehand to account for stretching.

Once you seem happy, start painting. !!Make sure to stretch them lengthwise as well fairly tightly around the cardboard. You may need to go over it a few times due to the material make sure you let the paint dry all the way before painting another coat.

It should take the same amount of time to try as it says on the paint, but make sure it doesn't break off from stretching.

You can also use this with inks and even markers if you feel like it.

I know that I'm going to get bored after a couple of hours, so I never sit myself in front of the machine for anything more than four hours. Break it up with meals, other hobbies, outings with friends, etc. I also know that I personally work best in the mid-afternoon so I give myself as many days of 3-5pm sewing as I can. The clusterfuck that was the application process left a lot of pained posteriors in its wake. As for the actual alley this year, it wasn't too bad; definitely an improvement.

The layout was weird, though. They had multiple islands in a row, and ended up leaving the tables against the far wall a good six or seven feet further then the rest of the gaps. I don't think they saw as much traffic for that.

4"x6" run 2-5 dollars, 8.5x11 around 5-10 bucks, and 11x17 can run anywhere from 8-15 clams. How does one decide what to price things? Do you keep things on the lower side to encourage buying? Or on the higher side so people who really want you stuff will buy?

I just tried to get into Momocon's Alley for 2013, and right as registration rolls around at 9pm eastern, their website crashes. Five minutes later, I submit my information as quickly as I can, and wait the extra 5 minutes it takes to even go through.

Faster than it took me to apply, I get a rejection letter.

I'll never break into the AA scene.

AA's are just getting harder to get into in general. My friend and I got into Katsu's recently, but other then Kotori (which I still haven't heard back from) we don't have any other cons on our list. Oh and I have a classmate who wants to try ANEXT this coming year, but after the shit this past year...

I prefer buying 11x17 or larger. I don't really see the point in smaller ones, though in my experience people will buy regardless of the size if they like the image enough.

I was debating with my friend about whether small/postcard sizes were even worth it. They're cheap to print, but I think ultimately the profit margin isn't that huge. Go with small sizes if you like them, but don't go with them if you're looking to make money. Ultimately, the number of people who ask you if you have smaller sizes is pretty small, so you'll only miss out on a very small amount of sales anyway.

Sometimes it helps to take a look around the alley and see what other people are pricing their stuff at. If you think your art quality is on par with a specific price range, go with that. Personally, I like to stick to multiples of 5 just because it's easier to deal with the cash.

Under-pricing just to get attention is a poor strategy, imo, since this isn't necessarily a market for haggling. The main driving force behind purchases is appeal, so regardless of the price, if someone likes it, they'll buy it. AA patrons are also generally familiar with the pricing patterns artists have, so you shouldn't be afraid of "turning people off" with prices.

that being said, BOGO or other deals and discounts are always attractive. For large prints, Buy 2 get 1 free is the favored deal since you make $30 with one transaction and you're still discounting your prints by a considerable amount. When I did my prints at 2 for 20, I definitely made more sales but I think the -10 difference ended up making me about the same if not less money than Buy 2 get 1 free. Either way, I'm charging $10 for a print, and at $30 pricing, the print cost is basically negligible

Sorry I'm multi-posting haha.

I like to draw characters, but hate backgrounds and all that nonsense. So what I'll do with those is print them out 4x6 or 5x7 and sell them along with my regular prints. I've had plenty of people buy one of their favorite Pokemon, or of the cute dinosaur I've drawn.

Yeah, I usually make just enough to make the trip worth it. I'm not sure why that is, though. It's a pretty big alley with a fuckton of talent/competition, but a lot of that talent is local anyway so it's definitely worth it for them. Still, a lot of my SoCal friends don't really consider AX a good/profitable con. Might just be the people there, and also the fact that the rest of the con costs so much that people are less willing to spend in the AA. Oh, and the fact that the AA is all the way in the back of the exhibit hall might be a factor in screwing us over in terms of sales.

If you're local, it's worth it, and even with middling sales you'll make enough to break even and profit some. If you have to fly out more than, say, four hours, you might be disappointed. AX is large enough for you to break even, most likely, but the remaining profit might not be as much as you expect for one of NA's largest anime cons.

It's not hard to profit at AX regardless of your total overhead costs, but when you consider that you can make the same amount if not more at Fanime (~20k attendees) or even Otakon (~40k attendees +$1k overhead costs), for the biggest anime convention in the states at about 60k+ attendees, sometimes the profit is a little underwhelming. For example, I made about 1.5k at AX this year, which was far behind Fanime and Otakon. I do better even at ALA, which has about 4k attendees. Not overall profits/money made, but proportionally, I do way better at ALA than I do AX. Don't really know why that is as I have the same shit at all my cons haha.

>>6335308
Stop pricing them so low. There's that whole philosophical argument about valuing art blah blah blah but that aside, from a pragmatic perspective, low-cost commissions attract, for lack of better wording, low-taste commissioners. People who know the value of an original piece are generally more polite, patient, and pleasant to deal with because they know what it is they're paying for and are happy to pay for it. I know we all scorn bronies and weird fetish commissioners on /cgl/ and stuff but in my experience, those demographics in particular really value art and are by far the easiest to deal with. Give me a weirdo with a fetish and $40 over a weeaboo who can barely part with $5 any day of the week.

So people who make posters, is there a way for me to learn about monitor calibration, what's the deal RGB/CMYK and Color Profile. I feel like I should know all these but I am completely lost.

>> No.6352419

>>6352060
The basic- screens are in RGB and printers use CMYK. Always make your print file CMYK at the beginning- if you are trying to print an RGB, the files get converted before printing and it can muck up your color results. You can calibrate your monitor closer to your final result, but I always make sure to do test prints because the color profiles are different. If you own your own printer it's easier to get away without doing test prints- but if you are using a professional printer ALWAYS get test prints done. If you can, try to have the files corrected the same day. Inks on professional printers change slightly depending if they're new or old so don't risk waiting a few days to find the colors are darker because the inks are new.(especially if you are using your own special paper.)

I'm too lazy to google for you about actually calibrating your monitor- I've never done it to my compy because I'm a super fan of the test print. Though Macs on the whole seem to be brighter and more accurate than PCs.

>> No.6352434

>>6352419
If you don't wanna calibrate your monitor you can always use CMYK process inks. It's built in to all adobe products. Just use a process ink in the color you need and it'll come out exactly as your monitor shows it. (well, most monitors. )
