Although I love Kamui's work and know she'll make it look awesome, it's one of the oldest, most iconic armor sets in the game so I feel ambivalent about the modifications.

Yeah, it's this artwork. For years I already had in mind to do this someday and after I stopped my Druid addiction I'm glad that I was finally able to start with it. However I'm still not sure if I will build the same weapons. This is one of these design points which looks good in the reference, but will look stupid in RL. Maybe I'll build the Ashbringer instead of. Oooh... Ashbringer... And yeah, surely I can do the original Paladin Tier 2 design, but I just love the artworks of Wei Wang and so I prefered the artwork instead of the ingame model.

>>6251953
Well, I just know how many other cosplayers feel. I had the same problems, cried because of the same reasons and failed in the same points when I made my very first costumes, armor or props. I just want to help others and make their way easier than mine was.

>>6252492
Meh... sorry, I'm just already sick of explaining it. The manufacturer really needs to improve google for this.
Well, it's a thermoplatic material similar to Wonderflex just without the fabric grit inside. So it's very stretchable but also can break pretty easy. To understand this material just watch my last breastplate armor tutorial please:

You're partly right, this is from a pull from the mold and the sculpt master I made wasn't the greatest thing in the world so there's a lot to fix still.

Shrug, first time sculpt and...everything so a lot of mistakes to be learned all around! -_-

Youtube is a pretty good resource on how to make these kinds of helmets/armor. Here's a few channels I'd recommend to look at to get an over all view on how to do this:

http://www.youtube.com/user/xXBocephusXx
http://www.youtube.com/user/troubleis1983
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheHeroTutorials
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9CzwJCZIEQ&

Red Hood was sculpted out of WED clay because I wanted to try my hand at that which I molded after.

For a first time build I'd highly suggest start off smaller and with cheaper materials such as foam mats to make a helmet/armor.

Question! Did the expanding foam turn out to be useful at all? Or did you abandon it for paper mache / paper clay? I've seen it recommended in tutorials, but it seems quite expensive for what you get out of it.

Also, working on a portal gun for a friend, most ambitious prop project yet, I can tell it's gonna' turn out awful. Anyone have any tips on sanding though? Front shell's pictured. Process is in the blog.

>> No.6260196

>>6260180
It wasn't too useful for the gauntlets..It mostly was a problem of it falling off as I was applying it (Even when spraying with water) and was overall too big for some details. So I did end up using a cardboard base and paper mache / paper clay.

Though I do see how the expanding foam could be very useful for filling in huge areas!

Also for the portal gun...All I know is get ready for a arm work out? hahaha Or you could try renting a power sander from local hardware store?

>> No.6260206

>>6260196

Might find a use for the foam to fill in the gaps between the shells and the barrel then, for some reason its actual purpose of filling gaps never occured to me until you said it :I Thanks!

People've suggested the power sander, but I'm not sure that the shell'd survive as it's just paperclay on a foam base. I've got a rotary tool with some sanding drums, so I'll try using that on the big lumps and then resign myself to the fact I'm going to have a gigantic forearm for the next few weeks. That skirt needs to be way, way shorter to have the right proportions and if thats the shirt you're wearing for uniform panty it needs to be majorly taken in.

So the ribbon is seriously bothering me as well. I guess using the matte side of it didn't help, but to keep from ripping it apart and starting from scratch, are there any other options? I'd go over it with a bias tape, but there are five layers of fabric and interfacing my cheap as dirt won't go through now, not to mention the grommets in the back. I feel your pain though, sanding to a totally smooth finish is so incredibly arduous. Really liking how your armour's coming along though, those pauldrons look ace, but I agree with >>6267045 about the skulls. What kind of clay are you using if you're having to fire it? I've found that the homemade paperclay recipe I'm working with is extremely resilient without having to bake it, I'm just leaving it in a laundry closet with the boiler to dry out.

Also, is there are particular tutorial you've followed for your painting? Because the weathering's ace and the black lowlights are really making the whole thing come together.

>> No.6273774

>>6273748

The original pattern was a Laughing Moon dore corset pattern, which is a great corset pattern as a base for many other styles and modifications. You can buy overbust corset patterns but they don't really give you the same look as separate boob cups.

Boob cups on a corset are really, really simple as long as the corset is fitted properly and you have a base bra. Just make your basic shell with all your basic sizing adjustments wearing the bra, draw where the bottom of the boob cups fits into the corset and then make the cut out and attach however you'd like.

Just keep in mind when you're covering the cup that unless your fabric is 4-way stretch you're going to need a seam or dart in there somewhere to make it fit snugly.

Here is a better picture of the corset without all the scales on it, for an idea of how the boob cups are put together and stitched on.

>>6254623

Above all avoid the big-box pattern company corset patterns if you want a 'real' corset, they all suck and have a stupid amount of ease when a corset shouldn't have ANY if you want waist reduction. You can make them work, but only with a metric shitton of modification and its really not worth the hassle when there are better options out there that will save you time.

*Almost* done with covering this with paper mache on both sides. Then comes any sculpting I needa do and then I can sand. I should have this done a good bit before Youmacon though so yay.

ALSO, I am somehow managing to suck at sharpie dyeing my wig. So I got my alcohol dye made from sharpies and shit, but I can't get the motherfucker to dye evenly. Now, I didn't leave the wig in the dye for an extended period of time(like 5 min). Is that my problem? I kinda put it in for a few minutes then took it out and laid it down. Problem is all the dye kinda seeped to the half of the wig that was facing downward therefore colouring one side more strongly. I'm thinking if I actually left the wig to soak in the dye for a good time I wouldn't have the issue of the dye not sticking. Anyone with experience have an opinion on this?

First time posting in one of these threads, though been lurking for a bit. Plan on doing a full iron man mark 3 armor for halloween (though need it by 25th for a school event). I've never cosplayed or did foam building before, but I've researched a lot and have a game plan set.

First row is the very first paper mockup I did with iron man pepakura foam files. Held together with tape so it ain't pretty, but got me used to the patterns. I did another paper mockup (not shown) and made adjustments to it before laying down the first foam helmet (the second row). Came out like crud and had to completely redo certain sections so I learned a lot.

Did the second foam mockup (fourth build overall) with adjustments and new discoveries from the previous mockups. Added in floral wiring for stiffness and worked out quite well.

Tomorrow I'll start on the first official build with my special foam and then use that to make the final helmet build to cover with vinyl.

The arc reactor for the chest piece was made first a week ago so no progress pics for it. Has abut 15 LEDs hooked up with a sink drainer as the housing. Runs on a 9V battery. Looks really nice irl.

I'm almost done with my touhouvania Sakuya, but i have no idea how to go around making the apron design. I don't want to paint it as that seems too cheap and costumey. I also bought some white vinyl I was thinking of cutting out but I don't know if i can get that level of detail. I have an embroidery machine, but I have no pattern or any idea how to make one. Any ideas?

Going with the dark colour scheme after all. Photos show both antlers with papier mache and hot glue details, then with the first layer of silver paint, which is where they are now. Tried to get a really natural texture by laying very thin torn strips down from tip to base instead of wrapping around the antlers horizontally.

Going to do another layer of silver on the base and tips in about 20 minutes (the paint on the glue is still tacky), then get in there with a few layers of black.

Working on a wire-frame for ears in black fur and felt and a base for the entire headdress, but forgot to photograph them while I was working. Too lazy to go back and do it just now, but will remember to take some as I assemble everything.

Laharl test, of a sorts. No shorts yet, and unstyled wig, but I'm trying to determine if my cape-scarf setup is salvageable, or if it looks too silly to work. Was hoping it'd turn out better, but I dunno. I might be able to run a second wire through the bottom of the fabric, it'll be a smaller gauge so it won't hold its own weight but it will be able to give the cape more of a shape, I guess.

Thoughts?

I need to hurry up this costume if I want to get it done before the madoka premiere. This was a lot more painless than I expected it to be.

As for tomorrow I'll stop by Joann on my way home from school to pick up a pattern and some stuff for the viking helmet (possibly some pleather for boot covers since there's a coupon!)

I was thinking of using craft foam to form the shape of the helmet and covering it with pleather. If done right will this look like shit or is there a better way of doing it?

>> No.6301925

>>6301909
There is definitely a better way of doing it. Shape styrene and use craft foam as padding to thicken it and as something to hold the shape.
There are tutorials for that over here: http://amethyst-angel.com/armormaking.html
And you can look through this site for ideas on how to construct the helmet: http://www.armourarchive.org/patterns/
It's really good for other armor bits as well.

Today I got to sew the jacket and belt for Sayonara no Tsubasa Sheryl. I found this jacket at the salvation army that was a size XXL but I really fell in love with the material. and hey for $7 I am by no means complaining. So it took me most of the day to de and re construct it but I'm happy with how it's going so far.
I think as of now, the belt buckle will be temporary until A) I find something more accurate or B) I sculpey over it.
unfortunately I'm a total derp and forgot to get the 4 mini gold zippers so the completion of this will have to wait.

Oh man I remember what a pain that weird mini vest was when I made Lilith from the first game.
Looking fab so far can't wait to see the finished product.

anywaaayyyys I totally forgot to post my side project from last month. I've never made a back pack and it was a lot of fun! It got autographed by one of the Borderlands designers! If I have a huge amount of time in the future, I'm definately going to fix it and make everything more even

I'm making chainmail for my Solaire costume. I've got a square large enough to wrap around my forearm, but I'm not sure which way it should go.

The pattern that I found doesn't go into much detail, but it seems to suggest that the stretch should go around the width of the arm. I just wanted to be sure before I got too far along with it.

The bottom one.

Stretch goes around. When you hold yourself vertically you don't want gravity pulling at the stretch because it'll make the mail look gap-y. (also less protective but that's not a concern here)

Still plenty to do. Can anyone recommend a good blouse pattern with puffed sleeves?

I think it looks great honestly but that lace is really cheap. Then again this is coming from a lolita

For the puff sleeve, you take the normal sleeve and cut it into even 1-1.5" strips. You then space them out evenly if you want the entire thing to puff, and draft the new pattern from that.

Your corset looks too long in length. It should end right about your hip bone level so that it doesn't fold up at the crotch point when you sit down.

You're right, but I don't usually shell out loads of money for top-quality material because I don't think my skills are there yet. For reference, would you mind linking what kind of lace would be better?

Oh man, I really want a Claptrap backback now!

Anyway Lilith progress. Satin stitched the green crosshatch fabric on to the collar, sewed collar to jacket. Changed some bits on the back. The fluffy collar and buttons are only pinned on currently.

You have any suggestions? Not too sure how to change that. It's leatherette if that helps at all.

I intend on weather everything later all at once, could probably with the advice.

>dat mess

I'm thinking of adding darts to it since heavy fabrics don't scrunch as well as I had pictured (duh).
But I will probably do that after I finish with the other things.

1 week 'till the madoka movie I'm excite!

Sand paper possibly? It just looks sort of...too perfect I guess? Looks really great otherwise though, what did you use for the collar fabric?

>> No.6316798

>>6316764
Well, I have plenty of sandpaper! I'll do some tests on some leatherette scraps I have laying about tomorrow. I'm a bit scared since I've never heavily weathered anything before. ;__; even all of my props have been cleanly painted.

The base of the collar is the same leatherette, the green is a nice cotton which I used a fabric pen on to draw the black lines (and then satin stitched on to the base collar). The lighter almost silvery part is me painting on the leatherette with a light coat of silver acrylic paint just to make it slightly lighter. Any of the other lines are drawn on in permanent marker.

Urgh, not sure if this is the right place to ask but there's no help thread in sight and its babby's first cosplay and I need help.

How exactly should I go about making the collar on link's undershirt? Should I make it separately and attach it? But there isn't a seam there and I don't want it to look wonky?

Does it still count as progress if all I've done so far is order stuff online and hem the pants?

Still have a bow tie on the way of course, and I'll probably make the backpack as well. Not sure if I'll put the hair up or not (either way I probably need to cut it a bit shorter), though since the upper part of my face is better-looking than the lower, hair-up would be pretty suitable I guess.
