Yeah, I noticed that too. When I first got it, it was really easy to manage without the cracks and splits but now a days it's really gummy and I usually try and put it in an air controlled plastic bin to dry out some of it before molding or else it's just all a gooey mess.

The thing that most people get annoyed with it is the time waiting which I tell the customer that it's because of that time is what keeps it from splitting, cracking, folding in on itself or just looking really icky.

I think I've just played with it so much now I've gotten used to it but I REALLY miss the old formula.

Going off of a topic on the other thread why is it that homestuck fans are the laziest fucking cosplayers on earth? Who decided to set the bar so low for cosplay that "casual" is accepted?

Was it the fandom, or was it because the outfits are so easy?

In my experiences, a lot of it just has to do with the fandom's general attitude. A lot of people go on fine with "cosplays" which are really just character-inspired outfits.

In general, they're just a bunch of kids, many of which don't have much cosplay experience but still want to get in on the fun of dressing up. In a fandom so large and so heavily populated with teenagers, people want to be "in" without putting in the effort to put together a canon-status cosplay. As long as they're otherwise well behaved, that's totally chill. They're just kids having fun.

It does irk me that these people still deem themselves as cosplaying though. I've certainly done character-themed/inspired outfits before, especially for small meetups where I don't want to go all-out like I would at a convention. But that's not a cosplay and I wouldn't label it as such.

Actually, I have one. The person responsible wasn't even a Homestuck, though.

We had a midnight meetup at A-Kon 23, for the Homestucks that were 18 and older. So I'm talking to some of my friends and this old black man walks over, and he's wearing sunglasses. He's not even a cosplayer or attending the con. He introduces himself as Kool-Aid and calls himself a thug. Wish I was kidding. When he took off his glasses, he was blind in one eye but not the typical cataracts. His whole eye was red. I honest to God thought he was crazy, and according to some other DFW members they said that he thought everyone was actually in a video game or some shit.

I really want to cosplay from Magicastuck someday, in Vriska's design. I'm thinking about asking a friend to modify the gun for her. It'll definitely be a costume for when I'm not a beginner. I also think the problem with lots of AU cosplayers (especially with shit like the Fancy Dreamers/Tiers and otherwise) is that they're just starting out, but they pick some of the most-difficult things to make.

It seemed like they wanted to be funny, and they succeeded. Also whether you care for tricksters or not, they used a decent a design and made a pretty nice costume out of it, so I'm pretty okay with this. The wig could probably stand to be a little bit better, but overall it's okay.

Also I don't think dumb faces are terrible when they're on purpose and in character (or for just silly photos). I know it's hard for me to look flattering on camera myself, so when I cosplay John, half the faces I make when there's a camera in front of me are very silly.

We have that down here too. Most of the panels are people cherry picking their friends over people who would be well suited for the roles. Most recent con panel had really bland Alphas(even though their cosplays were great, they were just so boringly ooc), and of course, no one paid attention to the Betas because "HOMG TROLLLZ!!!!!" but yeah.

Favoritism is never a good thing if it's with panels or general group activities. It makes everyone else feel excluded, especially if you auditioned for, say, Aradia, but one of the panel judges already has a friend who cosplays Aradia, so it's no contest, even if you'd be better suited for the role.

I actually wanted to go to Metrocon next year but I couldn't because of family reasons, but I think I'd just rather avoid Florida cons until all of the drama is over with.

I don't know why but it kind of strikes me as weird that so many people get upset about people picking their friends to help them with a panel. I'd never even seen a panel audition before Homestuck, it seems kind of like another of those, "this fandom is full of overly entitled people" things, honestly. I just don't really get why people care so much. I've seen panel casts who were chosen because they were friends work out great and not so great, and the same for casts that were by audition. Not saying this is you at all, but when I've heard about the complaint of not auditioning for roles in panels, a lot of people come across as "no fun allowed."

Sorry to derail the conversation here, I just have a two questions. I'd like to make Eridan's horns out expanding foam and either paperclay or sculpy. I'm wondering if paperclay can be baked or not to hasten the drying process, because it said on the package that it takes 1-3 days to dry. Also, how have people been attaching Eridan's horns? I'm having them come out at an angle, so I feel like if I attached them to a headband under the wig with screws, they head of the screw would be rubbing against the scalp or something.

Yes, you can bake paperclay to speed the drying process, and it works really well! I followed these directions from their website:

I made my Eridan horns out of paperclay. Depending on how thin you put it on, it can dry pretty fast. I think I gave mine about 24 hours before they felt VERY done, but I used a very thin layer of paperclay. When I attached them to my headband, I actually hot glued them on, instead of using screws, and built up a base out of hot glue so they'd be at the right angle.

I have a friend that sucked me into this nutty fandom, Iv been to conventions for a while and always cringed at every grey painted individual I saw.
I realize this was stupid and I gave the comic a chance and now I really enjoy it. But now She wants to cosplay Mituna and me as Sollux, but how do I go about not just looking like another black shirted candy corn horned troll?

We both agreed that one of the most hurtful comments someone can make on a headcanon cosplayer's--or any cosplayer-- photo is to say that they're absolutely perfect and no one is better, end of discussion. I'm a SoCal Homestuck fan but I haven't been able to really find anyone to hang around with but mostly I'm just too timid to also go out and look because of all the bad things the fandom does. I know it's not ALL the people but I'm still just a little hazardous.

On the subject of panel casting, it seems like it would be a huge hassle. Running a panel is probably hard enough, I can't imagine trying to bring in 20 people you have to pre-screen and don't know on top of that and trying to make them all work together in what, a month before the con? I've done it once or twice before, and It's pretty hard. Less of getting through auditions but more of just getting people to flat out audition. At the same time that it's fun to do panels with your friends, you also have to take into consideration who exactly you know is a good actor, so I usually go with people from the previous panel. I think the only thing I'm definitely changing next time is that I'm doing it by myself because the other people literally wanted to put their friends, who had incredibly shitty costumes, on stage which started a huge fight.

I ran a Homestuck panel for Animefest. We had about 40 different applicants (2-4 per character or so).The biggest issue I ran into was getting people to turn in their audition video. I had the panel planned since February (for a con in September), yet I didn't receive 90% of my auditions until two days before the cut off date. I had several other people helping me judge videos based on a scale, which obviously took some time, so having so many last minute auditions just made it harder to get everything done in a timely manner.

But ultimately, planning the panel wasn't really that much of a hassle! We made up and voted on a few staged questions to keep things interesting and to give some characters that might be overlooked attention, discussed what kind of seating chart would be best for potential character interactions, and met up a few times at the con and got everyone acquainted with each other, and that was it really!

I've only been to one meetup, but the San Diego community seems pretty safe.

Drama-free at least, and very welcoming. Lots of younger teenagers, but some of them are pretty well behaved, with obvious exceptions. The older crowd is tolerable and the mods are some of the nicest I've seen (this is after going to a Homestuck meets in NYC and Boston). From what I can tell online, the higher-ups are really keen on dispersing and solving drama rather than fueling it.

I'm not sure about other SoCal groups though.

I can see how that would be an issue, yeah! I might have gotten lucky because I didn't have anything of the sort. The majority of people in DFWstuck know each other and since everyone was excited about being in the panel, everyone contributed and worked together pretty well. But if it were say, an instance where there were a large amount of applicants that you didn't know, then it wouldn't do much harm to precast people you know are trustworthy, I agree. And if people didn't like it they could just make their own panel.

But really people are going to call bias no matter what. I had 1/5th of the say in who got parts in my panel and I still got flack for having "too many friends" in it.

Well it doesnt look all that bad. But there are a few things you can do to look more 'professional', whatever that means.

Buy a small pack of red LEDs and get them on your 8fold glasses. Its not all that difficult, and only requires a few specks of glue and a battery on the inside.
I also recommend you get a robo arm, which also isnt impossible to do if youre creative. Nothing a little black paint on an arm glove or grey long sleeved shirt sleeve cant replicate. (as long as the shirt is form fitting)

Its the little things that separate the good from the average.

Im personally not a fan of genderbent cosplays, but again, cosplaying your favorite characters is what its all about and dont let anyone stop you. Just make sure you have fun doing it, and if things dont turn out how you want, just save it for another time. Gotta start practicing somewhere!

Basically I grew up haha. When I first got into the Homestuck fandom it was well over a year ago and I just got into cosplaying. Well really homestuckcosplayhelp started out way simpler. Remember the weaboostories blog? They would get questions all the time about troll makeup, and that was the one thing I never managed to fuck up (except this one shoot with Vriska where I rushes to put on the blue jesus that looked awful) so I made the blog to answer some basic questions about makeup and stuff.

One year and 10,000 followers later and welp. Although, as people submit more things, I learn more and more about how to do things that I didn't know before. My problem isn't so much with the knowing how to do it as it is the execution. I could tell you in explicit detail how to make a Ahab's Crosshairs from the three or so tutorials we have, but making it? Probably would not do so well.

Plus I have a co-mod who is MUCH more experienced with cosplay and sewing than I am, so she's a huge help to fill in my knowledge gaps.

I tell you though, the shit ive seen get submitted to that blog...

It's mainly a lot of "HEY LOOK AT THESE FAIRY WINGS FROM PARTY CITY AREN'T THEY GREAT" and they look nothing like canon, or people saying that regular facepaint, mixed black and white, makes GREAT TROLL MAKEUP WOW.

Then there's the gems who are like "acrylic paint works great!" and I reply asking "you mean mixed with PAX?" and most of the time I get back "no, just the paint..."

The best one though has to be the two separate times people have submitted to us that to make troll eyes you can just paint contact lenses with regular paint.

Sometimes I weep for my fandom. Also less notable but we get a lot of submissions for stuff that is "good enough" which seems to be a trend for homestuck cosplay. Instead of striving for accuracy, "good enough" is where the bar is set. Currently we're trying to go through our posts and submissions so we only put the most quality out to help the fandom and prevent that.
