What style are you trying to do?

I've used more generic types of hairspray, for various wigs. The freeze-spray is amazing for lots of spikes, but for more natural styles (aka most Homestuck characters), you can probably get away with a different type.

Just go for the plainest stuff in your drugstore/beauty supply shop, as you don't need conditioners and vitamins for your wig.

If you wanted non-insect articulated wings (ie bird wings like the ones on the Bec-PM-Jade group at AX '12), savedchicken (the Bec) made a multiple-jointed harness rig where the wings flipped out when she lifted her arms.
Picture is the closest thing I could find on her Tumblr. There used to be a video of her testing out the bare wood frames, but no idea where it is now.

For open-close butterfly motion, you could attach the wings to your body in three places: first point fastened unmoving at the centre of your back, with two more points secured high on your biceps with clear fishing line so that the wings flap open when you pull your arms inwards.

Hey HSG, can you give me some advice? I have no idea how to do contouring. For most of the cosplays I've done, I haven't needed to, but I feel like my troll cosplays (and some humans) would be severely improved by some makeup magic. What do you recommend to do contouring? For trolls, I've seen some people use eyeliner and then blend it in a little, I've seen eyeshadow... I don't even know what to buy for human tones. I'm a guy, I've never had much use for makeup but I'm trying to embrace it for the sake of my costumes.
What do you recommend? Any help is appreciated.

To be fair she did increase the size of the horns, paint them and add Porrim's hook. I'm not sure out of what material, I suspect masking tape. I've only seen shitty camphone in room lighting pics thus far.

I can say positive things, though. She did a really good job on the makeup! Whatever she's using, it seems to be a very smooth grey, and she's lined her eyes correctly and the fake piercings she's using look okay too.

It's because her makeup looks so good that I'm so annoyed at her lack of any costuming giveafuck at all.

The oversaturated yellows and purples are an accident of the photographer post-processing. There's less a jarring contrast between wigs and outfits in informal backyard and at-con pictures (ie they look fine). I don't know what kind of person with a shoop program thought that garish, cartoony colours would work well in the dreamer context.
A shame, since the photos would be so nice had not someone decided to double the saturation.

I thought the Roxy looked a little bit cakey in the face, but that could have always been the lighting/camera, but her smeared lipstick + gratuitous closeups bothered me.
The Jane and Jake were just overall a bit awkward, with the Jake's hair being really bad.
The Dirk was definitely shit, though. Very obviously a girl, very obviously not wearing a wig and also very badly dyed/blotchy bleached hair, slouchy, piercings, and on the one closeup of the shirt it looked... weird.

I think it's because the characters all have distinctive voices (not just the quirks, but their actual speech patterns) which make them instantly larger-than-life and distinctive. I know the reason I read it is because I love the obscene alchemies that Hussie does with words - he makes up hilarious nonsense words, strings together really convoluted sentences, and has a real gift for knowing a catchphrase when he writes one. Maybe its language osmosis is partially behind its popularity - when your friend is yelling at you all the time about having all the irons, all of them, and ollying outie, and shitting a mile of rage snake to choke you to death, you're going to want to know why they're suddenly talking like that.

Ah, I know every case is different, but I do a mixture of both? My siblings both decided to give it a go on my one year anniversary of being a Homestuck, and my friends who moved a state away picked it up after I cosplayed to a con we attended and saw how much fun my siblings and I had.
So I have people I talk to irl, my friends whom I keep in contact with via the world wide web, and then random people on the internet who share the mutual interest in the comic?

Having such a widespread fandom does help lend to the fact that bonds between complete strangers can form via conversations that started because of HS. And I think that's pretty damn neat!

While your gun looks out of proportion, you should definitely go back and sand it down some more, and replace the diamond on the tip so it's crisper and actually looks like a diamond.

ok, thank you! I plan on actually having my own photoshoot at the upcoming con so that I can have some pictures that really showcase the costume, since i didn't have any quality ones taken at AWA. I went a bit nuts and overedited them since they weren't all that great anyway.
The collar was sewn and then a peice of cardboard was placed into it, and then the bottom parts were glued down, so i might cut and snip a bit and re-sew it closer the the cardboard.

I know foam crafted is popular so is tin foil with a thin layer of clay or model magic.

I myself, for the ones I sell, use straight up model magic. I'd have a pair of Succubus horns and Lambo horns for over 4 years without breaking or cracking and with model magic, it continued to harden over time. So, after 4 years they're hard as a rock but completely light. I usually only feel the pressure of the headbands I use.

I've been having a kind of down week because some of my orders have been getting lost or the Post office has REALLY gone out of their way to crush my boxes despite putting "FRAGILE" all over it. I usually use the thickest hardest cardboard I can find and custom make the boxes.

Maybe making a pattern guide might help? I have a nice thick cardstock pattern for my Gamzee and Eridan's with a tracing of what I want the horn to look like and then use the guide so they're nice and evenly matched.

And yeah same here. I'm OCD with the width, length and everything. I really want to make sure I get them like, completely perfect with the companion horn.

Like others have said, paperclay is the shit. Make sure you get actual paper clay, though. It's kind of harder to find in some American craft stores, but it's worth it. That superlight Fimo clay is utter shit, as is everything similar to it. It has a weird cottony texture and just isn't as "wet" and moldable as paper clay or even Model Magic. It'll work in a pinch, but it's not fun to work with.

I'll tell you what NOT to use - Sculptamould. I started using it thinking it would be like paperclay, but it's horrible - takes ages to dry, is difficult to handle, crumbles like a motherfucker and weighs more than Sculpey. I have two sets of horns that were straight up model magic, sanded and painted. Then I made another set that was a tin foil core covered in paper clay. I used hot glue to create a texture over the clay before I painted. I think that's what I'm going to do with my horns from now on, I really liked how it turned out. Pic related, I think it should be big enough for you to see the texture on the horns.

Really depends on whether your wig has enough volume for you to style a spike up without leaving a bare spot that you can see the wefting through. Some wigs are nice and thick, and some aren't.

Yeah, I noticed that too. When I first got it, it was really easy to manage without the cracks and splits but now a days it's really gummy and I usually try and put it in an air controled plastic bin to dry out some of it before molding or else it's just all a gooey mess.

The thing that most people get annoyed with it is the time waiting which I tell the customer that it's because of that time is what keeps it from splitting, cracking, folding in on itself or just looking really icky.

I think I've just played with it so much now I've gotten used to it but I REALLY miss the old formula.
