If you're buying "new"? I'd suggest a Brother with around 20-40 "built in" stitch functions. It'll give you some room to grow, as well as some decorative stitches for later projects as you need/want to use them. Those will put you in the $90-$140 price range depending on which model. Go for "computerized". I've found the $60-70 basic mechanical brothers they sell everywhere are just too basic for my taste, but they make decent starter machines I guess.

Working on Nehelenia for November. I've got patterns worked up and I'm doing muslins right now on the dress and sleeves.

Problem I'm having is choosing the right wig. The length and thickness are really problematic for me. Most cosplayers I've seen do Nehelenia choose a wig that looks to be roughly 100cm, which is a bit half-assed considering her hair goes go the floor.

The only wig I've found so far that even comes close to being the proper length is this one from cyperous: http://cyperous-cosplay.com/wig/wig.cgi?cmd=dp&num=263&Tfile=Data

However, it's layered like mad so the thickness isn't right and would require a lot of extensions to fill in. The weight of the wig also seems to have pulled out the curls that they styled into it.

Another one that I've considered is this wig, also from Cyperous: http://cyperous-cosplay.com/wig/wig.cgi?cmd=dp&num=1051&Tfile=Data

Now, the other limitation with these two wigs is the cost. I'd be really, really worried about ruining the wigs, given the prices. Also, upkeep.

So what I'm asking is:
- Are there any other wigs, similar to either of these
- Should I just suck it up on "accurate" length due to practicality?
- I've thought about inserting purple wefts to whatever wig I get, both to increase the volume and to mimic the anime/manga highlights. Would this be cheesy? Or possibly add the extra depth I'm hoping for?

>>6240822
The longer the wig, the more likely its going to become a nappy ass rat's nest at the bottom which mean you might just have to cut off that rat's nest. I would suck it up and go with a shorter, more manageable length.

>> No.6240864

>>6240851
Length is the main issue. I can curl a wig, easily enough. I just looked for pre-curled wigs to see how the fibres took to it.

I'm considering doing what another cosplayer did (after hunting through her DA) and sew multiple wigs together off the back of the base, then adding in wefts of extensions to cover the places where they were joined and to make it fuller.

The troubling part, construction-wise: We've been lost on what to do for the harness/chest armor that's seen on some of the characters. If we opt on being Ypsilon and Fyana, we probably could use morph suits for the base.

My friends and I are gonna cosplay some random Deckers members from Saints Row: The Third, and we haven't really figured out how to do the bright blue parts on their outfits since they seem to have some sort of lights on them. The stripes could probably be done with EL tape or something like that, but the bigger areas are the major problem here.

I have, for the princely sum of 50 pence, acquired a lace collar like pic related, planning to sew it to a t-shirt to make a cute cutsew. However, when I've laid them on the neck of my t-shirt, they're longer than just the front neckline, but not long enough to go all the way round. I've googled "lace collar how to/tutorial" and I can't find any guides for the pre-shaped collars, so I'm hoping someone on here knows what to do!

Why not just attach the collar to a piece of ribbon and wear it over the t-shirt separately? That way you can wear it with different shirts and you don't have to make the t-shirt collar fit the size of the lace collar (which would be trickier). It won't be a "proper" cutsew, but the effect would be the same.

I was thinking you would use a stiff base and cover it in fabric, but I don't have the slightest clue what to use as said base. I don't think satin would be a good idea; stalk through some pictures of people doing pirates at renfaires, you'll almost never see satin.... Actually about the closest thing I remember seeing to satin at renfaire is like, taffetta, and that's usually on royal gowns.

Linen is generally a great fabric to use, you can also use HIGH QUALITY brocades (not that cheap shiny stuff, use upholstery brocade; I suggest stalking the red tag section at joanns,) velvet can work if you don't use crushed velvet. I would probably restrict the more expensive fabrics to like, the coat & maybe vest, and use linen for things like skirts/tunics/etc

That's just me though ^^

...Wire cutters aren't a household object? What does this say about me having all these within arms reach of my desk...
Not even a pair of small pliers with the cutting bit like my black-handled ones there?

Seconding nail clippers, if the wire's thin enough, but use old ones you won't mind damaging, because it probably will kill them.

My friend is working on Bunny's armor, but the shoulder has him stumped. Does anyone have any ideas about this? He thought about heat forming some plastic but neither of us know if there's already something out there made for that...

>> No.6264458

>>6264200
You'll need a type of heat form plastic called PETG. It comes in multiple colors and thicknesses. Then, you're going to have to make a model of the shoulder so you have something to fit the plastic sheet to. Once you have that done you can *try* to do it by hand with a heat gun, or for the best results a vacu-form table. Good luck to your friend, there's really no good cheater method for this that I am aware of.

You can get fairly good translucency with appropriately laid fiberglass (http://www.laughingloon.com/epoxy.html)), so maybe you could try that with tinted resin? You'd still have to make a positive to mold it over, but with polyester resin at least, I've had good luck with plaster positive + vaseline mold release.

Search for plastics suppliers in your area. If you bring a template in, somebody should be able to cut the shape out of translucent black acrylic for you. Acrylic is a pain in the ass to cut: it likes to melt as you dremel it, and then the cut edge looks like crap. Anyways once you have your nice professional flat shape you can heatform it thus: http://www.casemodgod.com/modguides/OvenAcrylic/oven_form_acrylic.htm..

Alright seagulls, grant me some feed back. So I'm working Robin's cape, have just the right fabrics and what have you but I'm undecided as how to proceed to make this thing effectively.
Here are my ideas on how to do this.

1. Make the collar and then cut the cape to fit it's bottom and drape over the shoulders. I'd like to do it this way but I'm not quite sure how to.

2. Pic related, make it in three sections, the collar, the shoulders, and finally the length of the cape. I figure I can set it up easier doing it this way but it won't look as good.

Suggestions or tutorials? I figure someone out there has done this at least once, I think I have an idea on how to do the first process but I'd like some spot checking or some tips before I cut this stuff up. (Trying to save fabric and $$)

There are several places on taobao that sell replicas of Yuno's phone. If you search "未来日記 cos" they'll usually come up.

I have two friends who have cosplayed Yuno, one of them just made her phone out of clay. It looked good in photos, she made one closed and one opened so that she could have it either way. My other friend painted an old Razr phone and then sealed the paint. This also looked good, because it could actually open and close.

I've actually been trying to find a way to make Yukiteru's phone, since they don't sell replicas of it. Luckily, his phone is a little more normal-looking so I think I'll probably buy a display cell phone and paint it.

Noooooooo. Bad idea. What you need are acid dyes that are meant for dyeing synthetic fabrics. RIT is an all-purpose dye that does have stuff in it that's supposed to work on synthetics, but it doesn't work nearly as well as a proper acid dye. Jacquard Acid Dyes work really well, and all you have to do is follow the instructions. You'll need a large enough stockpot to boil your fabric, as well as vinegar to fix the dye.

If you can't order Jacquard online or buy it locally, iDye Poly is available at most JoAnns and it works pretty well.

Is it acceptable to use a shiny stretch pleatherish material for New 52 designs? Specifically, the black on New 52 Red Robin's costume. I already bought fabric for it, but ultimately decided against the black fabric I bought (since I couldn't find the same fabric as the red shiny stretch heavy knit in black) just didn't have the right amount or stretch and was too dull. There's a stretch pleather in the fashion fabrics at Joann right now, which is my last hope for a thicker stretch fabric with the right shine. Its not as shiny/slick looking as costume pleather/vinyl, but does have a slight "texture".

Not to sound like a smartass, but make it. It's not that complicated, but trying to find something that's just right - or even reasonably close - is probably going to drive you nuts.

Your best bet is just getting a pattern for a long coat and modifying it as necessary to get the two colors. Some kind of matte pleather would probably be a good material choice, if a bit harder to work with than, say, cotton.

For the hood, laying whatever material you use over some kind of rigid frame (heavy wire?) would probably be the simplest thing to do, and the least likely to give you heatstroke. I'd use black mesh for the opening so that you can see but not be seen, since IIRC you can't see their faces in-game.

Props either way, the nomad's design is pretty goddamn neat and you're awesome for doing it.

Similar yet different to what you're thinking, you could just have a seam go over each shoulder, so the cape is split into front and back vertical segments draping down from the collar/shoulders, rather than several horizontal segments hanging off one another, to avoid having a big seam along your chest.
Made a cape this way recently and it was pretty painless, and hangs just fine.

You'll probably want the shoulder section to be quite fitted, but if you need any extra cape drapeyness at the back, you can just allow for more fabric at back section beyond the shoulder seams (I've exaggerated in the pic to illustrate what I mean, in reality it should probably be a gradual curve to avoid any obvious pulling/flares up at the sides).

And I don't know how heavy or unruly the cape will be, but here's a tutorial for supportive snaps that'd suit it just in case.

Not the anon you were replying too, but this is the kind of thing I'm looking for too. Except I'm looking at more than just a breastplate. Do you (or anyone else) have any more tutorials or basic tips for starting on armor making from foam?

Not that anon but I've made armour using this tutorials and I've found it to be generally really easy to do. http://entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html

Rummaging through my bookmarks also provides this one http://amethyst-angel.com/armormaking_construction.html

I'm not sure if this would be quite what you're looking for,, but it does seem to provide a finish closer to metallic than using paperclay would. I've never tried it myself though so I'm not sure how effective it is.
