Why ARE how-to-Draw-Manga books so shitty? It makes me feel bad for kids who buy them (and turn into classic neo neko whatever and say she draws anime, she doesn't need to to learn realism cuz they're just cartoons!) and it makes me feel like people who realize how bad they are think manga/anime is really like that...

Oh man, that's exactly how I bought my first (and only) How To Draw Manga book when I was 11/12. I was so shitty, but everyone told me my drawings were amazing. People are too easily-impressed.

This was the only How to Mango book I ever found useful. I don't have a man or a man's suit, so it's a good reference. And by reference, I mean actual reference material, and not something to trace from. Most of the others are held back severely by being extremely dated in a mediocre style, when style is the one thing they're meant to teach.

These actually aren't bad at all, I adore the vintage 90's style manga you don't see any more so these illustrations really pique my interest.

But yeah, other Anon is right on target with it showing that she has been pushed beyond her comfort zone. She strikes me as one of those artists who gets a lot of her anatomical knowledge from studying previous existing illustrations as opposed real like naked folk.

You guys should look up a particularly talented fellow named Hajime Sorayama. His technique is pretty remarkable, and he prefers to use Japanese bodies to model for his paintings, though when he gets round to the head he paints Caucasian features.

Did anyone here ever get the "Costume Encyclopaedia" from the How to Draw Manga series?
I remember seeing it years ago and didn't buy it because it was like $50 or something and that was a lot for a grade schooler.

I remember it had lots of designs for all different elements of an outfit, like pages of sleeves, then pages of necklines, etc and you just put them together yourself to design an outfit, and I've always wished I had bought it when I saw it.
But then again, like all the other people in this thread who thought these awful books were great when they saw them years ago, it's probably not really as good as I remember thinking it was.
