What hotels are you staying in? How are your cosplay's coming along? And how are you getting there?

A hotel a few blocks from the host ones. Wearing all old stuff. Gonna march in the parade as HUNK representing Resident Evil. I might switch out Shaggy with Austin Powers Thursday since that is when the playboy bunny party is.

I don’t have a host room, but I’m not staying far, walking distance actually, but I know rooms open up as the con gets closer (at some rather high prices) and I might just go ahead and pay the spiked price.

I have five cosplays planned and so far I’ve finished two, but I believe I can finish the other three within the month if I dedicate my weekends to it. It’s all OC stuff since I never took much joy in cosplaying established creations and really enjoy making something from concept to finished design.

I’m just going to drive, I don’t live far about two hours!

I’m excited for this year and can’t wait to see old friends and meet some new ones!

I got an airbnb close by the host hotels. 2/3 cosplays are done and 3rd is around 70%. Unfortunately I have to make another cosplay for my gf which I haven't even started yet and will likely be scrambling to finish in the last 10 or so days. I'm a local so I plan to just drive down on Wednesday. Made the mistake of putting a count down timer on my phone so now I'm filled to the brim with anxiety.

>> No.10860832

I only live like ~15 miles away so I'll be driving in every day.. My friends always go back earlier so will probably be ubering back drunk in the night.

Still trying to think of one simple 'current' cosplay because my existing ones are just so passe at this point.

Largely depends on you and what you like doing. Panels are everywhere but there’s also other stuff as well such as dances and raves. Not sure what other conventions you’ve been to but DC takes place across multiple hotels in the area, even the ones not officially hosting. I’ve never made it to a single one before but the parade is a good spectacle to see if you can make it out of bed Saturday morning.

If you want to keep track of what is going on ultimately you will want to start by downloading the app. It usually keeps up to date with most events during contime. It’s okay to feel a little overwhelmed but you also have to accept and be comfortable with the idea that if you’re with a group you’re probably gonna get turned around plan-wise. There’s just so much going on all at once.

I've been to a con or two in muh day.
I'm looking forward to the parade for sure. Im proficient at drinkingtoo much and getting up early the next day. Lotsa practice in my younger years.
Mostly I just got for cosplay stuff. Not too worried about celeb shit. Would be cool to meet Yaya though. Or one of my favored YT folk that usually goes there, Bill from. Punished Props.

Do the hotels have a hierarchy of best to meh? I'll be there with only one other friend. So not a horde of planning people to deal with. Just him and I rolling around and enjoying the atmosphere.
I'm probably bringing one maybe two cosplays I have that are pretty attention grabbing but also won't sweat to death and can walk comfortably in.

>> No.10865458

>>10864539
If it's just you and one other person then that's less to really worry about. Of course you could also end up getting turned around by people you meet as well, at least in my experience due to my big mouth and talking to all kinds throughout. I can't talk much on what the hierarchy is since that's a matter of personal opinion and of course, what's going on in each hotel at any given moment.

The Marriott is going to be the most crowded at peak times and is usually fun for early morning crowd-watching. If you're cosplaying and you're going to a photoshoot it's most likely going to take place at the Hilton, another of the host hotels. They've all got their pros and cons. You might like the more enclosed space of the Hyatt or the many floors and vastness of the Marriott. I feel like someone else is more qualified to answer this question as I'm usually good in any hotel during con, so it depends on events that are happening. Some might like one hotel for the Rocky Horror screening, another might like another hotel for the location of the Bunny Hutch.

Understood. Thanks for all the input man. I think I'll do a lot of walking around and checking out cosplay n people watching. I'm bringing a few different cosplays to break up the scheme a bit. Two for day and one for night partying n such.

I'll watch some YouTube videos to get a feel for everything.

I get it. Come back to the thread in a couple of weeks you're sure to find more information the closer we get to con. By my own admittance the thing I love to do most is get drunk off my ass while socializing with other friends in costume. I might end up having to reign myself back this year since I'm also expecting to go with one or two other people but DC has other stuff to do too like the aforementioned horror show, live bands who show up, the Wrestling event and other chill events like Drum Circle, which I experienced for the first time last year. It wasn't as weird as people kept warning it to be, but then again I heard that a lot of Dragoncon has been sterilized from what it used to be, and a lot of it's more sordid acts take place behind closed doors nowadays.

NTA but that's how you travel between the big three of the host hotels, the sky walks are suspended between buildings so you don't have to go down one hill and up another to get to an entrance. During peak hours though you may just want to say "fuck it" and go via street-way since everything gets so crowded. Its an easy way to get looks though, and anon is right about everything else. >> No.10869235

>>10869231
I'm not a furry but I'm also a local to the area so it's not that big of a deal for me to go. It's held at the same DragonCon Mariott Marquis.

2019 FWA was pretty cool, still a lot of 'normalish' people just enjoying the con experience. 2023 FWA kinda ramped up the fetish part of it. Felt like I was at a con that was 80% gay/trans and a pride parade. Women were noticeably sparse.

Panels were meh, but they did have some fun improv related ones at night which I generally like across all conventions if I can find one.

The game room is impressive, a bunch of consoles, arcade set ups, etc.. It was relatively easily to work your way into a group playing melee or get your own console because the con isn't that massive. But sadly closed at ~12AM.

The raves/dances is what really impressed me though. My days generally consisted of getting there around 2-4PM, day drinking slowly, goofing off until ~10PM then I would check out some night panels get really drunk and go the rave/dance.

The crazy thing is the con runs Thursday through Sunday and they had a rave that went past 2AM every day.. I don't think I've ever seen a con that does anything like that except Dragoncon.

Most of the blacks are off doing black biker weekend or sporting events, though there are a lot of homeless on the streets if you walk over to the merch booth.

Atlanta in general is going down hill fast and the con is past it's glory days, you can definitely feel that a lot of the normie crowd has given up on the comic book movie thing and the mood is more sullen.

I'm sick of people being shocked when I say I've never fucked someone at DC. I've been going to this thing since 2016 and the sexual degeneracy feels like a part of the DC experience I've been missing out on. Every year someone asks me and every year I hear the same things
>Really?
>I'm surprised.
or worst of all
>How?
Why does everyone act like it's an expected thing? Is it seriously that easy to hook up at the con? If it is, how the hell do I do it?

I'm not from the US and I hold Dragoncon as some sort of mystic event where people can have sex in costumes much more easily.

Plus i'm from a country where there aren't hotels conventiently close to the convention centers and most people are too poor, and all conventions do their best to be family friendly, and every cosplayer has their nose so goddamn high you can't do anything you can do in dragoncon.

>> No.10877488

its really not all that different than say a 3 day dance fest/rave, only less drugs and more alcohol.

the cosplayers that are decent are also going to have their nose in the air too, as you put it, but the reality is they just put more energy into the costume being good. So much that any talk of getting laid has to equal at least as much energy as what they put in the costume to even have a chance at getting her attention.

It used to be. Dragoncon after dark was a thing with official BDSM panels. Those got cut around a decade ago when the can wanted to go the "family friendly" route.

One person I know that was dragoncon staff for a few years has literally told me i could get laid with my costume on (i cosplay a tie pilot from star wars), which is something i really wanna do.

I've been going since like 2012 and it really does seem kinda nuts on how much more expensive its gotten. I remember being able to get a 5 day pass for around $65. Felt like they were doing price hikes every year despite not adding anything. Like yeah they finally adopted a more up to date check in process which is appreciated by literally everyone, but it somehow feels less organized for everything else. Unless I'm mistaken there wasn't really many food options inside the hotels like it was in previous years. I know the Hilton has the Chikfila and coffee shop, but the Marriott used to have overpriced pizza and burgers. It was shit paying to much but was nice to have options if you didn't want to go to the food court. Lines are more nuts than ever for the Amerismart or any panel to the point where you are guaranteed to be dedicating an hour or 2 just to lines. Like I'm still planning to attend again next year, but I'm going to seriously rethink attending in the future if the price ever starts off at $150-200 without some kind of notable expansion.

As someone from Los angeles and coming to DC for the first time this year this con is such a fucking breath of fresh air. Anime expo and Comic con are so very much filled with vendors and people buying shit that the cosplay scene is nowhere near as good as DC. The only thing you really get out of going to AX or CC are big name cosplayers that travel from other countries to visit.
I think the closest thing we have to a cosplayer 'party' con on the west coast is probably Fanime.

I don't understand how people are so cheap about the badge itself.

Hotels, travel, etc.. I all understand.

A lot of them unironically are broke as fuck. Just look at the amount of room stuffing that happens. You will see on the rooms Discord and Facebook groups that they can't afford the room and will pack 8 other con goers in the room.

A lot of people have shitty financial discipline and it shows during con time. It's crazy that people can't put aside $50 per paycheck to save up for the room and travel. Food/drinks are always expensive at the event which is given like getting food at Disney/Six Flags.

The cosplay scene is way different, there are a lot of local people who goes to 1 con a year and it's DragonCon so they spend all the money and time on a couple of costumes and show it off at DragonCon.

My waifu and I has been going to DragonCon on and off and the experience has mostly been good, she got spooked by some drunk dude with retard strength that was picking up planters at Hilton while we were people watching. We pack some snacky food and once a while we'll see some younger attendees like stray dogs and we'll give them some of our snacks and they are so happy about it.

I forgot which year it was, the organizer decide to put the Tower of Dice across from the light saber booth... it created the perfect storm of traffic jam in the vendor's hall.

Tower of Dice sells shit ton of dice and people tend to stand around to pick up the cool ones they want, then the light saber booth, you can custom build them so you are easily spending 30 min in line to talk to a sales person then spend about 10 to 15 mins look over all the options so no one is moving in this gauntlet.

If you only do sewing, maybe go for a Seamstress cosplay that help people with sewing. Have a little portable spool holder or one of these portable sewing machine. I don't know how good these things are but I think in a pinch it's quicker than hand sew a big piece that's has came undone.

This type of stuff happen in concert/music festival too, I had to rescue one of the girl in the group we went to Music Midtown with. She was glad I waited for her while rest of her friend went to find bathroom. The guy whisper in her ear "I wish there aren't all these people here", granted she was dancing with him and having a good them then some where it cross the line for her.

Some guy going to the secret rave tried telling me and my friend that he was “friends with the dj, so I can get you guys in early!”. He followed us to the line and then asked for me and friends full names. Mind you, while we are legal, we look pretty young and he never asked our ages. The way he went about it seemed very much like a grooming thing, testing our limits by seeing how much we would share, and trying to make us feel more comfortable by saying we can tell him to buzz off at anytime. When I eventually couldn’t find another exit from the situation, I just straight up told him we were gonna leave and he said “oh, I was just doing you a favor, so you do me one.”
I just get sour taste in my mouth thinking about that because no doubt he pulls that stunt on other young drunk girls, some who may actually be underage. He was very meticulously manipulative about it.

LMAO! They closed that shit super early on Saturday... at 5PM!!! First time ever! The site said at 9PM they close. Mfrs ruined my con. I knew I shouldn't have bought the badges, my gut was telling me not to get them.

So I snuck in and had no problem. I even talked to some security. I blended in perfectly.

Speaking about the security, they are all volunteers. I don't see how ppl do it. It is free labor for the organization. They have shifts like 8hrs. Fuck that shit!

I was there for 9hrs Saturday night. I paid for my shit and DC decided to close early the pickup line.
