youma has gone so far downhill. Most of my friends (local longtime 5+ yr attendees) are just not attending at all this year. Cosplaying? Marriott doesn't need to give them a hotel block. If the con is 100% at Cobo then they can charge double, still sell out, and not need to provide event space to the unwashed masses. So of course they will refuse to open hotel blocks until absolutely, contractually necessary. And by then they hope they already sell out most of the hotel.

Youmacon was never really ran well. Trying to get stuff done with the people at the top was like pulling teeth. Every year it was more an excuse for Morgan to try and impress some guests then cheap out every where else. Sad to see it is even worse now.

It's really easy to understand. The Marriott knows attendees plan to book the rooms, and swap them for the hotel block later. But in attendees doing so, the hotel sees these rooms filled and will use that to further limit the size of the blocks. So if attendees fill all but 100 rooms, the Marriott's legal obligarion will be for a 100 maximum room block. Then they will say Youmacon did not fill their contractually obligated hotel block, and move to boot them next year. Youmacon - for all of their faults - is actually not responsible for this specific debacle. The Marriott knows they can charge attendees double, and then will try to void their contract for 2024. And Youmacon can't even publicly say anything about this out of fear of GM lawyers. (No, I am not a representative or member of staff. I'm probably not even going this year, but it's pretty obvious what the ploy is.)

I'm a local, close enough that I can easily commute there and back home everyday, so it's worth it for me to attend regardless of the drama. I had a friend planning to fly and stay with me who had to cancel, which bummed me out, but otherwise I'm still looking forward to it. Not having to worry about a flight/hotel for myself makes the whole thing a lot more attractive as a place to just have fun cosplaying for a weekend either way.

To be fair it's Detroit. When you see the staff is majority black you should already know that they won't be able to keep up with anything and freak out over nothing.
