I'm glad it's over. But I'm also sad it's over. Even though I hate it while I'm there (the lines, getting up early as fuck for autographs, lack of sleep, too many things I want to do, and not enough time to do them), I still overall had fun. Get to see friends I haven't seen in a year. Get to be surrounded by stuff relevant to my interests. Get to meet or at least see guests I would not have been able to if I hadn't gone, and who I may never see again.

I'll see you fucks again next year.

>for the premierfags, you miss being a premierfag this year?
N/A
>damage report on your bank account? On a scale from financially fucked to your wallet got sexually assaulted
Think roughly $400 on flights/ubers, $300 on hotels, $225 on merch, and gonna just guess another $250 on food.
>were LA residents who made the mistake of working at housekeeping a nuisance to you?
I'm a heavy sleeper so I had no issues
>your spoils of war. Pictures are encouraged but optional
Pic rel
>pros of this year
Was able to get into almost all the panels & events I was interested in, the only exceptions being ones with conflicting times
>cons of this year
Not line related: the Saturday -> Tuesday con is an awful fit. Concentrates all the interesting panels and the like + all the hype on Saturday/Sunday while the last 2 days of the con were pretty dead. If I was a local I'd probably have just dipped after shopping on day 3.
>what needs to be fixed but won’t because AX only cares about profits?
The general crowd management is atrocious. Waited 2.5 hours to get in on Saturday because of how much the lines wrapped around and whatnot. Getting into panels was occasionally way too tight with them doing the "all the people in line 1, then 2, etc" since so many people would just jump in from the end and half the time they'd line people up by section instead of by the extended line.
>will you be coming back to AX 2024?
Almost definitely. This year was almost definitely the best con I've ever been to/most fun I've had at one. Only complication would be if $ or work makes it an issue.
>you going to Totally Not Anime Los Angeles 2023?

I am so proud of how my Rob Lucci came out! I didn’t get any sleep during the con, and nails are so tough to do anything with, but it was worth it. >damage report
Brought $300 for merch and ended up spending my last dollar. I did go over about $50 but honestly could've been worse. I made out like a very happy bandit. I got everything I set my eyes on in AA before the con. Only drawback was dropping a sticker on my way out and having to go back and buy it.

Pros:
>Didn't wait in line long
>Looked at everything in Dealer's Hall and AA
>Went with my best friend
>Didn't have to pay for parking because we got dropped off and picked up this year
>Brought food this year and didn't spend an arm and a leg on shitty con food

Cons:
>The smell, per usual
>Pre-con anxiety stomach ache
>Got bumped a million times and really couldn't look at the booths as fully as I wanted to because it was so crowded. I looked at every booth, but most of them were only a cursory glance. I would've really liked to have a 2-day pass to stress less about doing it all in one day
>Wasn't able to cosplay this year. Couldn't make a costume in time and didn't want to ruin it travelling through the halls.
>Didn't interact much with others because of extreme shopping tunnel vision, but few artists and vendors I talked to were lovely.

>will you be coming back to AX 2024?
Yes, even if I have to go alone. This year really showed me just how much of an amazing event AX can be with artists travelling internationally and the amazing vendors. Despite all its flaws, I really love AX.
>you going to Totally Not Anime Los Angeles 2023?
Yes! This will be my first year. I'm tempted to join the masquerade but I've never done a skit before and I'm nervous. My sewing skill looks good from afar but my lines are messy still. Might join next year instead and just try to view ALA for the fullest.

On merch I only broke about $450, food on the other hand cost me well over $1,000. Not my intention. Deffinetly not eating out every night and paying for my friends dinner on the way next year.

*TRIGGER panels always great
*Mega64 panel was fun
>cons of this year
*Crowds, crowds
*Meetups were kinda dry first day or two but that was most likely my fault
*Some minor drama in my group I went with, just stupid bickering
*Exhibit Hall was pretty ass, non of the reseller booths had anything I cared for, outside of CDs and the like.
*FUCK. WALKING. IN. LA.

The First Slam Dunk was awesome and exceeded my expectations.
Felt like lots of actual artists and creators who were cool to talk to compared to years past (I'm not talking AA shit, I'm talking actual industry creators).
Felt like the exhibit hall had cooler merch than years past.
>>cons of this year
The VIP lounge for the SMT concert was pretty lame compared to the One Piece/Steve Aoki concert last year. This year even for VIPs the bar wasn't an open bar ffs. It felt like hardly anyone was even there btw
Hotel strike wasn't good obviously but wasn't nearly as big of a disruption as I was fearing it might've been.
AX as a whole is leaning more and more into coomerfaggot shit. This isn't a pornography/sex convention despite gross classless Angeleno muttoids pretending it is or should be.

They're not kidding. It's both front and back of the house, since the group that's spearheading the whole thing is a hospitality union.

Marriott and Ritz Carlton had to fly employees from all over California to staff JW. This is also the first time in my 9 years of hospitality where I've seen a hotel where most of the back of the house are white people. Kinda surreal.

Also, I hope y'all actually brought up the protests during check out. I got $900 off my hotel bill for doing so, but I had to point out that I

>don't want points
>work for hospitality
>know they're using OnQ
>one of my two jobs is a Marriott subsidiary

which pretty much meant they can't bullshit me about rejecting any attempt for compensation. Marriott doesn't care about refunding that much since their name is far more important than cash.

I do scalation too, if you have a fluent japanese speaker it's easy enough. If your translator sucks at English then you need a proofer but that's not hard to find. The most time consuming part would be cleaning the art and if it's the artist's own digital files you're working with that's a breeze. Just turn off all their sound effect layers and censor layers and that's it. Yeah for a scanlator it's more work if you're trying to do a full removal/ replacement of all the Japanese sound effects but imo you don't have to. I'd just typeset the new sound effects nearby.

You should've brought it up, the hospitality union specifically targeted Ritz/Marriott hence why when every other hotel had their protests starting at 5am, Marriott had to deal with the protests starting at 2am, inconveniencing THEM specifically was the union's goal.

Marriott cares more about its rep than short term financial gains hence the reason why they've been refunding people for 90% of their entire stay. I personally got $950 back so I only had to pay the tax, all 4 days essentially just costed me $451 which isn't a big deal since I slept through the protests, can't say the same about my roommates though.

You can try to call JW directly for a refund request but now that you're out of the premises, the odds of a 100% refund is pretty low, at best you'll get back maybe 50%.

AX this year was the best con I've been to & the most fun I've had at one. I met a bunch of cool people and feel like I at least made some progress towards dealing with my constant awkwardness/social anxiety, even if it's still just a few steps in a long process. I'm probably moving soon, but once I do I'm definitely going to try joining my local cosplay community to meet more people/learn more so I can my own costumes for next year instead of making it, being disappointed with the result, and just scrapping the whole thing.

>> No.10866583

This is the reason why I tend to advise to people to consider AX if they haven't gone to a con before. It's the best one to start with.

Even if you don't have friends, the fact that it's an industry con means there's always something of interest going on, and you essentially get to hang out with people who you might get along with.

Been doing AX for 12 years now, every one of them always gets me new friends but the ones I met from my first year are the ones in my close circle.

>>never ever get contact info because deep down feel it would be creepy to ask because no one would like me

That's your anxiety talking when that happens. You need to start recognizing which thought has your best interests at heart and which ones don't.

If you genuinely mean well, what's the worse that could happen? If your sincerity in asking for means to connect is answered with disgust, then it's good that they rejected you since you wouldn't want to have those types around either. If they looked like they genuinely had a fun time interacting with you, they wouldn't hesitate to give you their socials. You already got past the first hurdle being in the same line since you both share the same interests.

you think anyone is going to want to stand in 120 degree sun in the desert for 3 hours trying to get into a con people will legit die

That's just awful AX/LACC management. Vegas handles events of that scale at a near weekly basis without issue..

More food options than the wasteland that is downtown LA near the convention area..

>> No.10867463

We've been having the same relocation talk since at least 2016. It's not going to happen and the only hope of curtailing the crowding is to expand the LACC itself because SPJA sure as hell aren't going to cap badges.

>> No.10867464

lmao no. Even with a convention in town, you can get a last minute hotel in vegas for like $35 a night.

There's tons of tourist fast food available everywhere for normal/cheap prices. There's also stuff like fremont street, pawn strars, stage shows, and if you feel like travelling 20 mins outside the strip, even more interesting stuff.

Vegas would be great for another con, but I think AX is stuck in LACC, since the city offered AX the low low price of $1 to have the spot.

>>10867464
not technically true. all of them tack on hidden fees called "resort fees" that can range from like 60-150 per night.

>>10867459
i mean you have almost every fast food chain scattered about the strip. If you want to fill up for cheap there are like 10-20$ buffets that are not bad at all

idk, LVLUP expo seems to be doing fine.

To be honest though, I have long since lost my desire for AX. 2008 with the move to LA was the last straw, but 2005-2007 saw the con get so corporate, it just wasn't fun anymore.

Wondercon and other small comic conventions happen at ACC all the time. DC/Marvel/SW girls with their tits and ass out is like a mainstay.

Not only that, but ACC had a huge upgrade/expansion right before the pandemic, and the panel halls are really nice. The real reason AX is staying in LA is because the Mayor of LA really wants to keep AX. Last I heard, he offered AX the convention center for a fucking $1, just to beat San Diego and ACC's bid. The tax revenue is just too good for the local economy, apparently.

Yup, AX2000

Some dumbass at the J-List booth sold a kid hentai. Said kid was Disneyland Hotel Manager's child. Second day of con, Disney marched into the exhibit hall and forced people to pack up anything rated PG-13 and up or be kicked out of their booth.

AX was not asked to return. lmao

Reading the article on this is fucking hilarious

>The second dealer however claimed that his first amendment rights were being violated and demanded that the police be called to the scene (again?). The police arrived at 11pm and informed the dealer that the first amendment did not apply on private property (Meaning that Disney and AX had every right to restrict the dealer from “expressing” himself through the sales of pornographic material).
>At this point the dealer claimed that 90% of anime is child pornography and proceeded to show the police all the other dealers who were selling pornographic material.

Imagine trying to double down on it in this way

I think its definitely a con meant for locals, it reminded me of the small con they do in Pasadena, except now it's in Ontario. I enjoyed it last year, only went day 1 though since I didn't feel like driving back out to Ontario on day 2

>> No.10869183

There honestly wasn't enough going on at AX Chibi to justify going more than one day, or hell even at all compared to even ALA.
>gaming room
>artist alley
>dealers hall
>food trucks outside
>tiny concert area
that was literally all AX Chibi was, I don't even remember it having any panels but I could be wrong on that

>> No.10869192

>>10869183
Yeah that's why I couldn't justify going day 2, hate driving from East LA to Ontario, at least regular AX is wayyy closer. I think there were like tiny fan panels which are pretty much just meetups and I think some screenings. Exhibit hall was okay, Good Smile had a booth so I was happy, but the rest of the vendors were local shops, so just a more anime-centric Frank & Son's. That being said, I'll go again this year just because it falls on veterans day weekend and I plan on getting druk, we'll see if I go both days, maybe it'll be better this year.
