OP to answer your question, it’s always been around but Jessica Nigri made it popular. And now that normies are all weebs and pretty much every anime is just Waifu bait, there’s plenty of low effort to cosplay as “sexual”(ized) characters for them to mimic

The first time cosplay as a hobby turned to softcore porn was when two or more people doing cosplay gathered in same place. Whether you like it or not, cosplay is look focused craft, and any comparasion creates a hierarchial competetion. Not to mention that as female focused hobby, look competition is just inevitable - you can't seperate without mental gymnastics the end result from looks advantage. Well, you can of course do the ala carte autism like in high end food where deconstruct the components and skill to make them, but this is world of formalized competition and not the world everyone else lives.

If you want to know the reason why you or anyone else is now particularly aware of cosplay as softcore porn, it's simply the moment of when beforemention looks-game turned to large scale. In other words, birth of social media, tumblr, onlyfans and larger and larger cons that resulted in larger audiences of especially normies. Second and final nail to the coffin is monetization that was possible due to the expanded audiences eg simps and normies, though whoring is and always been female primary occupation.

The only place where cosplay is just cosplay of outfits is in your bedroom, alone making those costumes. Step in front of mirror and imagine yourself seen, and the softcore pornsona steps out.

As Scifi conventions gained more mainstream attention it also garnered negative attention and venues and cons started limiting public nudity. This also happend to cons with a fetish community and while Scifi worked to become more mainstream the fetish people worked to become more underground.

was it really? what I saw back then was nerds going to cons and cosplaying being rare, and done by nerds if even
let's pretend for a second that what I stated is a fact, which I'm not sure but my intuition says yes
then the question is when being a comic/animu fanboy transfer to women, and mostly to hot looking women that could pull out being costhots

Look, you can go quite far back to whatever costume partied and likely find point of men being at least half or more of the performers. Certainly, sweaty normiecucks flock the cons as always, but cosplay is female majority business. I agree actually to your point that exodus of women to cosplay is what turned it to softcore porn (and rest of my points you answered), but I would put definite limits on what is cosplay as we know and what we talk about - since those mothefuckers put up customes in europe for centuries on. If it's modern cosplay, it's definitely defined by 2000s and japan anime wave that overcome the previous scifi whatever stuff. That material formed base of female whoring, and thus started the process of competition, monetization and so on (as well birth of social media and smart phones with okay cameras). That's why I defend the statement of softcore porn being born the two people gather up. If it's any kind of cosplay, then when "two women" gathered up, but for the modern type, it is as mentioned.

I noticed this at Momocon this weekend. So many girls with their asses hanging out. No complaints, of course, but I figure it's in the same vein as guys who do shirtless cosplay except one is more tasteful and one is more lazy. I'm proud of my fellow men for getting their chiseled abs, but all I see for a woman is ass and spank-bank material. Look at this absolute chad. Effectively the same in presentation in terms of showing off your body but entirely different in principal.

Women's primary hobby has always been dressing up and the underlying, sublimated reason for this has always been that they want to be pretty princesses and better than the other girls.

Women also don't have nerdy hobbies as deeply as men do. Even when they like those hobbies a lot they are never the lore memorizing speedrunning autists that the average man into a fandom is. They only do this when it's memorizing basic plot points and character drama. Women mostly get into hobbies to socialize with other women and "be seen" socializing and having a certain identity, which factors into getting attention and being the prettiest princess in town.

The few women who just want to dress up like something completely nonsexual are heckin quirky chungus adult Disney fans, and even they know that the attractive women are mogging them and pity-friending them. Also remember that girls that guys would call "autistic" and see as some kind of egirl MPDG are usually the biggest whores on the face of the earth and have even weirder relationships with their own sexuality/physicality and their need for validation than more stereotypical sluts do. So they are more prone to extreme erratic behavior when whoring and competing with other women.

The real answer is threefold:
1) It's not any more "softcore porn" now than it ever has been in history, it's a hobby that's always had sexy costumes present while puritans cried relentlessly about it. There has always been, and still presently is, a primacy of non-sexy cosplays at every convention, and despite what specifically going through explicitly pornographic parts of the internet shows you, or what photos come through to your coomer friends' social media, most cosplayers are not cosplaying sex-focused cosplays.

2) A prevalence of social media presence and actually financeable cosplay means that you can make a career simply making popular enough cosplays. In fact it's so financially viable that when you get enough followers, you can use the money you earn from cosplaying to pay for commissioners to do most of the work for you AND pay for the cons you visit AND funnel that following into other profitable ventures as an influencer. If there weren't a plurality of terminally online virginal men constantly oggling every single thigh and pair of tits in front of them, these things wouldn't be as profitable, and thus wouldn't be as noticed as they are.

3) The perception of any and all costumes that are any more revealing than a burqa as "pornographic" has polluted the image of the scene as a feeding ground for horny weebs desperate to have sex, rather than just people dressing up as their favorite characters from cartoons and anime. Going back to 2), the primary issue is that this also feeds into a large amount of outsiders with no interest in the hobby continually glancing into the hobby for their own sexual deviancy and nothing else, feeding algorithms that the most popular cosplays are those that are sexy, and thus reducing the signal for anything that isn't similarly sexy, and thus making them less likely to appear in common social media. It's really an issue caused by the people who "complain" about it more than anything.

Jessica's crimes is that she figured out what would become the only fans model to monetize cosplay. Pay wall access to lewds and doing online interactions with fans to gas them up to keep them on the hook.

Yaya also figured out how to monetize cosplay but her method was focus on selling physical commodities / training tutorials but the luer was her sexy cosplays.

Both are demons that speargeaded to to commoditization of the hobby
