Where could I find a good pair of similar looking red and green contact lenses? I'm considering cosplaying as Suiseiseki and can't seem to find any that would fit together with each other or fit the cosplay.

I have pretty sensitive skin, but also have heavy beard growth so my 5 o clock shadow is fairly noticeable even a few hours in & it's hard to do makeup to really account for that. I've been considering just waxing it 2-3x over the course of con season, but am worried about potential long term issues with regrowing. If it's just an occasional thing am I probably fine? Otherwise, is my best option gonna just be get really good with makeup?

Your hair will grow back just fine. If it didn't the waxing industry would be in trouble. Focus more on caring for your skin before and after. There is such a thing as sensitive-skin waxes. It absolutely benefits you to spend the extra cash on getting your waxes from reputable salons and better products.

anon it's a fact that waxing causes trauma to hair follicles which will kill them eventually. it varies from person to person, but waxing often thins out hair over time due to permanently killing the follicles.

Start off with a long hair wig, then hold your scissors vertically to feather the tips. Lightly mist hair spray, blast it with a gentle bout of hot hairdryer, then pinch and shape the tip with your fingers. Hold it until it cools. Remember that synthetic fibers will take shape as they cool, not with heat like natural hair does. If you look up some youtube videos, it'll be easier to visualize.

Ordered a custom cosplay a few months back when the con date isn't settled, so I just gave the guy "I need this done by August". I know its the same month every year so there are no surprises. Recently, the date was now settled to the last week of the month. Three months left and the guy is still working on the order of the customer after me. I want to update the guy on the deadline that now has a date but I didn't want to make it seem like a "gotcha" or something impatient related. So how would I type that?
He did told me that he would work on mines after he finishes the order. He's a lone guy so I could guess the other customer ordered something really fucking huge because going by the updates on Twitter, it was some very complex guns and military outfit I've ever seen.

To be honest it sounds like there isn't an issue with the date if it's still within the same month and actually happening the last week of that month. It sounds like you're feeling a bit nervous because you haven't received as many updates as the other commissioner. Remember that just because you haven't seen it posted on twitter doesn't mean that your commission isn't being worked on. Ask for an update if it helps.

"Hey, [commissioners name]!
The date for the convention that I'm planning to wear your commission at has finally been released. It's [date]. Now that we have a concrete date, I was wondering if we could talk about scheduling? I know that you're currently working on another commission in addition to mine, so I wanted to get a feel for your schedule and where you're at currently with the project. In order to have it in time for the convention, I would need to have it in by [date]. Does that work for you?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

I recently ordered a mask, pic related, which looks great but doesn't fit my face super well. I'm been experimenting with different placements for padding to make it comfortable to wear but its always either squashing my nose or the sides are floating well away from my head.

The mask is made of resin (~2 mm thick), but the store I bought it from doesn't list exactly what kind. What are the odds that I can reshape the mask a bit with some heat? Is there a best practice for doing this (heat gun, boiling water, hair dryer, etc)? Or is this a terrible idea?

I feel like if I can 'bend' the mask a bit so its a bit more triangular than flat that will both bring in the sides to fit my head and create some extra room in the front for my nose.

Bad idea? Good idea? How do?

One quote I got is 1k.. seems like a fuck ton, maybe an investment I'd be willing to make for a very high quality cosplay. Swords would be an additional 500.
Not sure if that's a reasonable price or not for just the outfit, I would prefer an outfit with little polyster but would definitely use polyster if it took off some of the price.
New to commissioning cosplays so just looking for some idea of what is overpriced and what isn't.

>> No.10857463

>>10857460
Hmmmm. Yeah, unfortunately that's a pretty complex looking outfit to make. If you want it to look good, $1000 probably is in the ballpark for something custom made. I don't know where you are commissioning from, but when it comes to quality you get what you pay for. You don't want to pay $400 for something and when it arrives it looks like you got it from spirit of halloween, you know?

Possible option is to break up the commission into smaller parts and shop around with different sellers rather than doing it all in one place. That much work doing all by one person is a lot to ask, because its a lot of different kinds of work. But, for example, if you order JUST the dress + hat from one seller and the arm pieces from another, and buy your own black leotard? That gets you like 80% of the way there, easily enough to be a recognizeable and functional costume, and you get your cloth work done from someone who specializes in that and your armor work done from someone who specializes in that, without having to find one person who does everything. This might mean that you choose to forgo certain pieces on your first outing, like the legs, but you can buy those later and split your costs over time rather than doing them all at once.

I can't promise that doing that will save you any money, splitting your work to different places might be more expensive. But its an option I would explore.

I'm begging you to get a clue or gtfo. The way you hold your scissors or apply hair spray doesn't change whether you're styling human hair or synthetic wigs. The only difference, in this specific example, is what temperature sets the style. I mentioned this in my original post when I explained both.
>Remember that synthetic fibers will take shape as they cool, not with heat like natural hair does.
I genuinely don't know what answer you're expecting if "cut using this technique" and "apply this product" was not the answer you were looking for. Alucard's style is extremely basic -- just wispy bangs and layered ends which are achieved using the method I fucking told you. You don't even need to build volume because his hair is thin and slick. I also directed you to more resources if that didn't satisfy you. If you're not happy with those answers, then figure it out yourself. That's an excellent idea, actually. I found someone willing to do the clothing and shoes for a good price, so I can look for someone who specializes in crafting armor stuff for the arm piece + swords.
Didn't think about splitting it up but it's going to work out much better than putting everything onto one person. Commissioning cosplays is a lot more in depth than I thought, but that's what I get for picking a character that's not well known & quite complex. Thanks for the advice anon, really appreciate it!

I know that she's kind of a controversial figure here, but SarahSpaceman has a video on this particular myth. To give you the tl;dr, fabric softener doesn't really do anything and arguably makes it worse. If you want to restore wigs to close to original quality, I hear that your techniques when handling the wig (washing, drying, and combing) are more important to the end result than any one product. Some swear by Mane 'n Tail. I recently saw a video of someone restoring their wig with a steamer. I haven't tried it myself, but it did look great. If your wigs are already fucked, might as well try everything.

>> No.10859564

>>10859435
First off, at what point is your wig getting wrecked at? The brushing, styling, storing, washing, or something else?
At its core, a wig is a bundle of plastic fibers. The fibers will get warped with every heat application, even if you iron it back. If you heated up a plastic jug and bent it, then tried to reset it to original shape, there will be irreparable damage to the structure. Same with brushing out a wig, the tugging will damage the fibers over time. You can't stretch out a plastic bag and expect it to ever go back to its original shape and form. The best you can do are preventative measures, like anti-tangle sprays meant for wigs and food-grade silicone spray to minimize the fibers from tangling to start with and minimize how much brushing you have to do.

>flipping it inside out, and then applying a layer of dye or acylic paint on the inside
Flipping it inside out is pointless because the paint or dye is going to spread through the fibers. You don't want to dye it because the dye won't neatly stay within the lines like you're hoping. Fabric paint (or fabric medium mixed with acrylic paint) is how this person got the effect. They used highlights and shadows. You can see a dark purple, black streaks (probably created using a stiff dry brush), and light purple paint.

Can goo gone remove adhesive residue from vinyl prints on shirts? Like I've already removed the vinyl from a shirt using my heat press, I'm just trying to get rid of the glue. I know there are actual things that are specific for that kind of adhesive but I can't seem to find anything I can buy locally. Acetone would likely fuck my fabric up so I'm avoiding that like the plague. Sorry if this is more of a /diy/ question.

Planning to do roller skating Barbie for a con, but I’m torn on how to approach the bodysuit. Someone was selling it on Etsy, but the quality looks like shit.

Feel like it would be more economical to just get a brightly colored leotard and some compression shorts and just use fabric paint on them. Emulating that retro 80's paint job doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do, just a bit time consuming. At least if you do the paint job yourself it will be easier to make the hat match.

For the pattern, look for something like jodhpurs or jockey / horse-riding pants. The lines on the pnats are either to indicate the fabric (like corduroy -- though I don't think that's the fabric used here) or style lines which are just seams added for decoration. I see that this outfit has them going throughout the entire outfit, so adding non-functional stitch lines might be your best best.

Definitely go with Spoonflower or some other fabric website then sew it. Painting on stretch fabric is such a pain and it isn't worth potentially having ugly cracks or breaks in the paint.

I do see the other anons point that painting is more economical and easier to match though... Maybe some paint tests are in order? Try something that have flex to it. Fabric medium perhaps?

Hey /cgl/, just some more questions on these Coraline gloves if anyone can help. They're probably basic because I don't know any better

https://www.handylittleme.com/coraline-gloves-knitting-pattern/

I've found these instructions, but I can't knit myself. On Etsy someone has their own that they sell for around £50, but someone on Fiverr says they'll do this for me for around £20 once I sent the instructions. The difference seems stark. Would there be a big quality difference or anything to watch out for? I've never even really used Fiverr or actually even ever commissioned anything.

Secondly, how do I work out sizing? I don't know if I'm missing something but the page just mentions the length of the gloves, which seems a bit useless if it's also including the wrist. How can I tell if these would be too big or small for my hands based on these instructions?

>> No.10861050

>>10861038
Seal all pieces separately with heat and then glue them together. After that coat it with whatever you prefer be it mod podge or plastidip. Foam is pretty much like a sponge, so you have to hit it with a heat gun to prevent it from absorbing glue or paint.

Seconding other anon's advice. If you paint (or topcoat) then glue, you're just gluing the thin layers of paint together rather than the solid foam, making it more likely to come apart later.
It will be more difficult to paint and still get nice clean lines on separate parts but it's worth the trouble.

I have a pair of Daft Punk gloves I'd like to display when I'm not wearing them. What's a good way to do this?
It's a little tricky because the gloves are tight-fitting elastic fabric, I don't think something like mannequin hands are the right choice because I'd have to really try to get them on and off. Ideally I'd like to 'pose' them in the triangle position of picrel, but any display better than "laying them flat" would be great.

>> No.10862162

>>10862069
I'm not sure why you'd do both, I'd say one or the other just depending on personal preference (or cost/availability). Foamsmiths use a lot of different sealant. At least in my case the process goes
>heat-seal foam (hit it with heat gun)
>spray-on seal (plasti-dip, rustoleum leak seal), usually a black or flat color so it doubles as priming
>paint, weather, glue on addn'l stuff
>clear-coat (can be rattle-can rustoleum, though I'll use transparent plasti-dip or leak seal if it's something like a weapon that can use the extra protection)
Although it's good to seal your props, remember that more layers will cause a loss of fine detail so don't overdo it.

I would only use flexbond if you have errors or bad seams to clean up. It takes multiple coats and you have to wetsand it to get rid of brush strokes. Plastidip is the lazy way to seal foam if everything looks good already as it wont gap fill much at all. For painting anything that will flex alot like armor I like to use platidip to seal and color or another flexible paint after plastidip.

I’m here to ask about making a prop weapon from the fallout games, ideally fallout 4. It’s my first con without my family and I want to go in a costume. I figured a fallout vault dweller would be an easy one. I don’t have a sewing machine so I’ll have to buy a premade suit like pic related and I plan to customize it a bit by adding knee pads, elbow pads, and combat boots from a local army surplus shop. I’ve got my bottle caps to paint and I can even borrow a leather satchel from my dad. Hair and face styling is relatively simple too. The only thing I’m missing is a weapon and I wanted to make at least one part of my costume. Ideally I’d like something that I could make in a month with about 7 hours a week. Although heavy weapons look great I don’t want to have to lug one around and they’ll take longer and are more expensive. I was thinking something like a pipe pistol made from actual pipe or another rifle made from foam.

I don’t know where to start or even what foam to buy if I was going to make one. Any advice, recommendations, or tips are appreciated.

I'm not really into cosplay but I didn't know whether to ask this here or /jp/ but would any of you have any good recommendations for making / ordering a custom Happi?
I want to put together something like pic related
I can do the art myself but getting it onto the coat is something I wouldn't even know how to begin to approach. I saw earlier in the thread some people talking about transfers and if that's my best bet I'll look into that but if I can pay somebody who isn't completely ignorant (which I am) to make a quality happi coat I'd rather go that route.
Any suggestions?

Look into getting the largest hard suitcase you can and then have it so parts of the armor are removable like the shoulders. You can also stuff all the extra parts inside the chest armor.
You might also want to design around the size of the suitcase. The other option is to just use a large cardboard box and pay for oversized luggage.

For props it really depends on the size of the prop and how narrow it it but pvc, magnets or just glue at the con can work.

A lot of my cosplays are more "distinctive clothes" than armor, sci-fi, or fantasy so it's not a matter of things falling apart... if I retire a cosplay it's usually due to
>no longer a fan of the series
>character has become overrepresented in cosplay
>character has become attached to an annoying meme that I don't want to be bothered about
>too uncomfortable to wear at a con, will only use for photoshoots
Because I tend to cosplay "classic" characters rather than seasonal anime, I'll regularly pull out a cosplay I've had for 5+ years. Most of my stuff I've worn at least twice but there's definitely ones that I've done five times and don't intend to retire. At the cons I go to there are a couple cosplayers who do the same thing every year and it's fun to spot "hey it's that guy!" annually.

I'm not familiar with that movie but I'll share my general advice and thought process for finding movie clothes:
>a note about availability
A lot of movie productions will buy modern-day street clothes off-the-rack, be aware that even if you ID "a hoodie sold at Target in 2011" it may not be easy to track down. Searching "jacket from [movie]" will probably just return low-quality replicas.
>fan communities
Search sites like Reddit or the RPF to see if fans have already ID'd anything. Sites like Spotern can be helpful, if a bit hit-or-miss.
>gather reference
Movie screenshots can be helpful but will often be color-corrected or have dramatic lighting. Try to find behind-the-scenes set photos, prop auctions, or other clear images. Take note of details - does it fasten with zippers or buttons? How many pockets? What does the back side look like? Is it new and clean or dirty and worn-out? How well does it fit the character? Are they wearing layers? Look for a scene where they put on or take off outerwear. Does their outfit change as the movie progresses, if so what particular version are you making? Learn the terminology - what's the difference between a field jacket and a bomber jacket? Levi's have a little red tag, what are distinguishing labels on other brands?
>your standards
Remember that nobody at a con is going to pull up a screenshot from the movie and line-check your fit. How much are you willing to compromise on exacting detail? If you find a shirt with a zipper instead of snaps is that okay?

This might be an issue depending on where you're shooting. Just make sure you have the orange tip and maybe consider only doing quick photos with it or leaving it at home

The lolita threads might be able to help you out more. From a sewing perspective, it's a tea or knee length dress with a gathered skirt, bishop sleeves, thin cuffs, contrasting button placket and collar, both with ruffle trim and a belt bow (also with some ruffle trim it looks like). If you want to surround the arm there are still considerations to make like leaving space for your joints, but it's mostly the same as armor. Depending on how you put things together you can either fabric-glue the parts to a tight-fitting glove/sleeve or use velcro and straps to secure things.
I recommend searching for cosplays of characters with some sort of cybernetic arm (Edward Elric, Venom Snake, Winter Soldier, VLD Shiro, Johnny Silverhand, etc) and take in the approaches that other people take, and kind of pick and choose what'll apply to the character you're putting together.

First-time hopeful cosplayer here! I have all the pieces for my first cosplay but the helmet, which I want to make out of EVA foam. Here’s what I’m planning on buying:

EVA foam
Some kind of foam glue (contact cement)
Heat gun
Primer
Acrylic spray paints

And here’s my plan: cut craft foam to base helmet pattern, heat gun to seal then glue, heat gun, add detail bits, heat gunning to fit to the curve, primer, paint, wet sand? Do I need a topcoat of some kind?
Does that sound reasonable? I don’t have much practice with crafts beside gunpla and origami… Is there anything else I should know? Sorry if this reads like my blog but I trust 4chan hobby posters, god help me.

You don't need primer but you need to seal the foam with something, Plastidip works and is the easiest. Or you can do 5-6 layers of flexbond / modgepodge and wetsand it down.
Top coat is fine if you want to make it glossy.

I'm looking to make an eevee mimikyu cosplay and I have simple ideas for the body, underbody, and fur collar, but I don't know how to make the head not look horrifying.

Ideally, I'd like to have it extend past the width of my head a bit, but I'm not sure how to do that and I can't figure out what to even google for it. Searching for helmet tutorials is only returning like Roman helms, searching for cloth masks is only returning how to make the mouth/nose masks.

There is the option to make a papier-mâché sphere with a hole in it but I think the shape would be hard. Even with a balloon as a base it would be very spherical and not clothy looking.

That's the funny thing about cosplay: you find the most helpful resources in the most random of places. Tutorials meant for crafty grandmas have been some of the most groundbreaking in the cosplay community. Try searching for other categories like mascot tutorials. Watch creators make projects that might be for a totally different character, but has a thin through line to what you're working on. If I recall, Adam Savage has a mascot tutorial on Youtube. Animal Crossing characters or furries might have some useful resources for you. Just go down the rabbit hole and you're bound to find something.

>papiermache and balloon ball
You would need a stronger base like chickenwire if you did papier mache. Otherwise it'd collapse in on itself and wouldn't be able to hold the ears up. A balloon ball with fabric over it miiiight work but it sounds like it'd be miserable balancing it on your head all day. Tbh most cosplayers use foam these days. It's lightweight and can support itself if you get a thick enough width. You'll definitely need a head and shoulder harness though.

I have the knockoff from Amazon and not only do they keep the wig way more stead, but I find myself not needing to far less bobbypins if at all which greatly helps reduce the tension on my head. The wig grip itself isn't tight on my head either. Definitely do recommend. I'd even go a step further and say you could remove the comb at the front. I personally prefer them at the temples and back of the head anyway.

I'm buying popular anime cosplay off amazon.
It says they use asian sizes, as a 6' guy on leaner side would large be good for me?
I was worried the cosplays will either be too short or for fat people.
Should I go even bigger than asian large? I'd rather it be a bit big since I could try and take in pants, but if the legs are too short can't really fix.

Any idea how to go about getting a Charlie Brown type t-shirt? I see one on ebay but the design is only at the front inside of all the way round. Not sure how ese to get one though.

Would prefer it in a darker yellow/orange or even the original dark red. I think yellow is too bright for me while the others might even just pass as a regular shirt

Looking to cosplay Scar as I'm brown and finally fit enough to do so.

Already mangled a Tshirt and got some pants and bandages.
Got some lighter liquid concealer and dark bronzer to contour the face/help with the scars.

Looking for advice on putting arm tattoos, the wig and scars.

Dunno what wig to buy/shape. Is a first time n' I'm not the richest dude.

Tattoo wise, heard maybe use sharpies/henna?

Scars also heard about maybe utilizing special fx makeup/silicon prosthetics to help with the face/arm scar.

Thanks a bunch because I'm retarded.

I want to make a shirt to cosplay as pic and I am thinking I'll buy a red and white shirt, and sow the red sleeves onto the white shirt.

I don't know how to get the 96 on it though, should I cutout the 96 from the red shirt and sow it on the white shirt or should I just use markers to draw it on? I've also heard of using vinyl but have no idea how that works

>should I just use markers to draw it on
If you want it to look bad, then yes.

>should I cutout the 96 from the red shirt and sow it on the white shirt
That's an option. The professional or best looking way to do this would be to:
>Use wonderunder to apply fabric 96 to the shirt
>Either turn the edges under before applying wonder under or satin stitch around the edges

>vinyl
Yes, you can and imo should use Heat Transfer Vinyl. It has to by that kind specifically. You will mirror the image and then you can cut it out by hand or use a cutting machine like a Cricut to cut the design out. Then you'll use an iron to apply it according to package instructions.

I've heard that when in cosplay, you should exaggerate your makeup because the wig and outfit kind of steals away some of the thunder. There's this common experience of feeling like a clown before putting on the wig and then it evens out. Imo, what helps the most for me is lashes. My face looks so small if I don't wear lashes. They don't have to be birds' wings big, but just enough to give some shape back to your face.

I think it can be a good way to dip your toes into cosplaying but it can certainly feel like a "bare minimum" to where even if I recognize the character I'm not going to ask for a photo or compliment them. Like, I don't begrudge the hordes of 15 year olds all wearing the same AliExpress Demon Slayer cloak, but for me a huge part of cosplay is the creativity of different approaches people have so the same-ness of premade cosplays puts a damper on that.

One thing to think about is looking for simple "upgrades" to do on a prebought - adjusting the fit or redoing an accessory, even something minor can really make you look and feel more distinct and proud of your look. At least do the bare minimum of ironing/steaming it so there aren't visible fold marks.

This is my understanding too. Any wigs that aren't part of an official big company like Arda and EpicCosplay, etc. are chinese wigs. I haven't heard any big names aside from those.

>> No.10872519

Arda, EpicCosplay and other western brand wigs are overpriced and worse quality than most cheap chinese wigs.

Japanese brands are the best, but their wigs are mostly sold at Taobao or other obscure sites that are only available in Asian languages. They were available in English websites years ago. But those English version websites got closed because most cosplayers only buy cheap chinese wigs from aliexpress or expensive western wigs that look zero like any character's hair.

My favorite brands are Cosplay Wigs Japan, Ayanami Satoru Wigs and L-email for anime and Asian videogame characters. Their wigs have complex hairstyles and colors that are impossible to achieve with regular western wigs.

Anon you are talking out of your ass, just about everything you mentioned are Chinese wig resellers, with some having more exclusive production lines with higher quality control. The store fronts you mentioned from AliExpress are all reselling from Taobao, usually Manmei but also a couple of other wig shops, which, again, pretty much all source from the same couple of massive factories in China. I have you assume you don't speak any Chinese or Japanese.

Yes, unless you have a giant head.
Even the nicer Chinese wigs are competitively priced in China because they're up against all the other cheap wig sellers, and thanks to the cheap cost of labor and without the middleman mark-up, pretty much all wigs sold within China are going to be cheap in price. As for actual quality, go directly to the original sellers and storefronts and read the reviews from other people. A lot of reviewers will mention if a wig is true to accurate colors or not, and how much styling is needed out of the bag.

Bros, I need some help because this is some odd situation. Custom cosplay ordered, discussed over it, yadda yadda.
Here's the deal.
I asked for the price of extras and the guy gave me the price. I said yeah and I'll pay the extras + outfit.
Few minutes later, I went over to the price and corrected my mistake, thinking the price was everything, not the extra added on top. I said I'll pay for the main outfit.
Guy understands.
Months pass.
Guy finish outfit. I said great, and sent payment.
He then says I'm missing extra money for the extras. I was thinking that I thought I corrected my order before but the guy revealed that he made the extras already, pics and all.
I can pay up for the extras after a week, they do look nice, but that was unexpected. I already paid for the main outfit, so I think the guy knows I can be trusted. And the guy is trustable, I looked him up and did research before placing a order. It seems like he kind of forgot that I said 'no' to the extras earlier on but it was already made. What can I say to this? This is the first time this sort of misunderstanding happened.

>> No.10872787

>>10872785
If you like the extras I would get them. Could possibly ask for a discount because he did make a mistake.
If you don't want them at all just show the guy where you said you cancelled them.
He might have checked back the chat log where you did want everything or just remembered that part and that's where the misunderstanding came from.
Just confirm a few times in the future if you cancel stuff like that to make sure there's no misunderstandings and follow up on it later.

I do a LOT of different suit cosplays and think it's a great type of cosplay to do, like you said it's not hard to get nicer quality.
One thing I'd recommend is trying to get secondary details beyond just "wearing a suit". Are they a rough-and-tumble character with a rumpled collar and loosened tie (Spike Spiegel, Constantine, etc) or are they image-obsessed with every button buttoned and their fit precise (Patrick Bateman, Yoshikage Kira, etc)? Does their outfit have any secondary elements (tie clip, lapel pin, cufflinks, etc) that would make it more obvious what character you're cosplaying?
