I wanna cosplay Peacock. Should I make her arms thicker to fit onto my actual arms, or make them closer to her design and then just hide my arms maybe by crossing them in the little top flap part of her dress?

>> No.10828840

>>10828779
It's close, but I think the colors sky magenta or persimmon pink would suit the character better. You can go to the color page on their website to see a video comparison of each color under natural and fluorescent light. In terms of the base though, it should be fine -- especially if the bangs come uncut.

>> No.10828841

I think you should make the gloves and knots/eyes slightly bigger to force the perspective and make your natural arms look smaller.

I think you're right! Persimmon pink is a great match. Thanks for the suggestion.

How difficult does the hairstyle look? I'm hoping it won't be too bad...

>> No.10828972

>>10828964
The difficult looks pretty beginner-ish friendly to me actually. Since the spikes aren't defying gravity like Sora from Kingdom Hearts, they should be much easier to manage. I'd say if you have a friend's help, you shouldn't worry. Just look up a spike tutorial, cut a tad bit longer than you need and then you can trim as needed once you're a little more confident. You got this!

Is there a good way to attach wings to my back for picrel aside from cutting holes in the back of my suit?

I don't want to have huge white straps showing on the outside, it's super ugly. But on the other hand I don't want to have huge holes in the suit so I can use it elsewhere... is there some sort of removable double-sided adhesive I could use?

Magnets are brilliant. I'll do exactly that.

What about for the halo? It looks like there are two approaches people generally use:

1. Hairband tilted upward and attached to back of head
2. Actual lightweight halo that's suspended up by a thin wire

Any clue what specific materials are used for (2)? I think it could look a lot better than (1) but not really sure. Plus, if the support is too obvious then it'll looks ugly.

Is there a good quality place to find contact lenses? I'm trying to help a friend shop around for a singular oroboros contact lens for our Full Metal Alchemist group. I've only had experience buying from uniqso which unfortunately doesn't carry it. I'd appreciate anything if you know of a reputable place.

Also this is kinda embarrassing but I'm having a hard time tracking down a good slim fit black trench coat for Greed that I can either gut out the inside lining of or is just not made of straight wool. I'll be wearing this towards the end of summer and trying to not pass out from heat stroke. I'm wondering if its a particular style of trench coat also as the ones I keep finding have the wrong kind of collar flaps or none at all. Perfectly fine modifying whatever to fit my build. The ideal thing would to find something made of cotton/linen that is purely worn for style rather than warmth.

If you remove the lining from the trenchcoat, the seams will be showing. It'll be ugly. You just want a lightweight one. Honestly you're better off trying to find a cosplay trenchcoat because any real trenchcoat will be heavy and warm. Unless maybe you look for something in the techwear /goth variety which are more for style than function.

Yeah surprisingly when I was searching around I kept finding things that were straight out of the matrix or "leather". Its why I figured modifying a thicker one would be the better route to go. But you are right, looking for cosplay specific ones might be the move. Thanks anon

Hahahahah she is basically a full-body spandex suit. You're looking at 4-way stretch for almost everything. Cape can be regular silky fabrics, details on bodysuit are usually better off as 4-way stretch spandex/vinyl as well. 3D details/accessories on her bodysuit should attach by magnets or snaps for best fit and maneuverability. I'm thinking hard about going to a convention next month and I kinda want to try a cosplay too.
Never done either, but I already think I look like this dude from Fire Force and I imagine all I really need to do is buy the getup and shave my facial hair.

Question I've got is, are there preferred sites to find pre-made stuff like this, or at least ways to find stuff that doesn't actually look like wish garbage?
Second question is if I can actually get this in 1 month, but I feel like this one might be on the more reasonable size

>> No.10829200

If you're on the fence about going to a convention: just do it. It's such a fun experience even if it's only a one time thing. Plus you save a boatload off of not paying taxes and shipping in AA.

>are there preferred sites
Yes. You can find reviews on each of them in the FAQ or my searching "where to buy cosplay online" and watching the top videos -- particularly the one by Sachie. Miccocostumes it the one I hear most prominently but I buy all my costumes so ya know, read the reviews. You can also get them on Amazon these days -- especially simple uniforms like for Fireforce. Most of those retailers have Amazon storefronts. That would be your best bet if you want them in a month or less because the rest will be coming from overseas.

The general rule of thumb is, the prettier the cosplayer is, the less likely they made their own costume. Usually the most skilled seamstresses are also hambeasts.

One time I visited China and wanted to visit a fabric shop to see what it's like there in a city of 20 MILLION people, was told by friends and family there that there wasn't one. I couldn't believe it, not enough demand from 20 million people to have a real physical shop or chain.

Im not really looking for much. It looks like most NEET squad cosplays are just black military gear with a NEET sticker slapped onto the helmet.

I guess my main question is what is a decent or realistic price for a cosplay like this?

Because it's easier to print/design, and it's easier to mess with an object post-print rather than pre-print.
Also because there's a difference between tactile and aesthetic texturing and I'm striving for the latter rather than the former, and would think that painting/sanding/finishing would go more towards achieving that goal.

The filler primer and sanding is to get rid of your layer lines and seams you can paint raw prints but then its very easy to tell its 3d printed and the look is bad. Painting prints is probably the same as foam after you have the foam sealed. Most of my prints I just paint over the grey primer but for a sword I'm working on I plan on using a black gloss base coat for some extra shine.

I'm confused as to why you think you wouldn't be able to do this. You can do whatever you want, anon.

>How do women's sizes fit if I am a slightly muscular average height man?
Get measured, then compare them to the size chart. You'll probably have to look for plus size costumes.

>How essential is wearing a wig for cosplay
Very. Your hair is oily and will fall by the end of the day. Wigs stay pristine (for the most part) all day and can be styled to match anime fluff.

Now if you don't give a shit if your costume is good, you could go without a wig.

>> No.10832885

>>10832593
Well most of us on here either make our own costumes or buy premade from costume sites that are already accurate to the character so it really isn't an issue. For the few that alter clothing for costumes, they usually start by understanding the terminology for clothing so that they can find exactly what they're looking for. For example, your character is wearing a sleeveless vest with a collar. My guess would be that the character is meant to be wearing leather. So that's what I would search for. As for where, you likely won't find all of your pieces at the same place so you'll have to do some hunting. Try:
>Online: Mercari, Depop, Poshmark, Thredup
>In Store: Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc.

If you're lucky and you can find matching clothes then you won't need to alter them. If you can only find partial matches, you might need to do a bit of sewing or tailoring (or pay someone to).

any suggestions on how to tackle this?
the clothes are easy, but the way the hair splits, gets spiky and then turns into "horns" seems like it'd be a pain in the ass to pull off. they'd have to be lightweight, fairly stiff and also blend in with the natural look of the rest of the hair. normally, i'd avoid wearing a wig due to the heat here, but the only thing i could come up with was a two-piece setup consisting of a regular, styled wig and one that's the choker + the entirety of the horns attached to it, with the seam being hidden by the upper layer of hair. i think foam could maybe be lightweight and durable enough? dunno, if any of you have any better ideas than this or attaching huge structures to the wig's cap itself i'm all ears

and the second thing that's stumping me is how i wanna do the weird scaley skin. i was thinking of body paint and maybe DYIng some prosthetics, but i have no experience with that sort of stuff so I've no idea how feasible it'd be to maintain that sort of setup for an entire con and not just a photoshoot
the other ideas i had in mind were doing them like socks (bonus points for not having to wear shoes) and a glove, maybe out of silicon? and then just using foam and a little bit of makeup around the edges to blend it into my skin. can anyone think of any characters with a similar textured thing going on?

This reference picture isn't doing you any favors. I'd scour the available images for this character first before attempting construction because it could change the way you approach the costume. That being said, from what I'm looking at here, I'll try to address your concerns.
>The Horns / Wig
As you point out in your reply, yes you would want to use a structure underneath the wig cap to attach and blend them with the wig. People either use a wig headband with magnets sewn in or an X made of worbla and screw that pokes through the wig and allows the horns to attach onto. As for the little thingies that poke out of the wig, I'd probably approach it the same way. Just attach it to a strong understructure and use something lightweight like stuffing then sew a pleather sleeve to go over it so it's not too heavy on your head. Kinpatsu has a great tutorial on this structure. It's her "Giant Ponytail" one on YT.

>Scaley Skin
I would grab a slick, scaley fabric (probably from Yaya Han's line of fabrics unless you can find a better source) and create gloves and boot covers from them. Then sew them onto a pair of arm socks and tights in the that grey/brown skin color. Since her feet are toesies, you'd probably want to make gloves for your feet (meaning each toe is covered) then add false nails on top. For a base, you'll want a sandal like shoe that won't have a big heel or obstruct your toes but will be better than walking barefoot.

>can anyone think of any characters with a similar textured thing going on
I'm not sure where this character is from but I honestly thought of Made in Abyss. Rather than looking for character specific tutorials though, try looking for technique tutorials instead and watch them regardless of what character is being made. That's the best way to learn.

You certainly haven't picked an easy costume anon, good luck.

No. The elasticity wouldn't be ruined but it wouldn't have anything to hold onto. It's like the equivalent of holding a rubber band between two fingers and then dropping one finger -- it's just gonna sadly hang off of the other finger loosely. You would need to add an elastic band around the high leg and ideally a silicone band too, but desu I wouldn't hold my breath on it staying up -- especially with the angles its doing.

They're called skin caps. Depending on the dye you use the skin cap might also be dyed so I'd recommend trying to find a wig in the color you want rather than dying. Both the skin cap and the wig fibers are plastic so dyes that will work on the wig are very likely to dye the skin cap. They're fairly expensive but both Arda Wigs and Epic Cosplay Wigs have lots of color options with skin caps that are heat resistant. Their shorter wigs don't typically have skin caps, but most of the longer ones do. If you have to dye the wig I'd recommend getting a wig without a skin cap. It won't be as realistic, but most people don't look that close anyway. Worth noting that most wigs from Arda and ECW have long bangs that you'll need to cut yourself.

I'm assuming you're wanting to cut a hole in a bought leotard. As the other anon said it's called a keyhole. I don't think you can get 100% professional results by cutting a hole out of a pre-made leotard. For best results it would need to be patterned with the keyhole in mind. That being said, this is how I would go about cutting a keyhole out. I'd get a nude colored stretch mesh that matches my skin tone decently. I'd trace the shape out onto the leotard and then pin the nude mesh onto the inside of it. I'd sew along my marking with a stretch stitch, sewing the two pieces together. Then I'd carefully cut out the hole of the leotard while avoiding cutting the nude mesh. This should give decent results.

The tail end seems fine but the base is very limp and I'm sure that's what's bugging you about this ponytail too. Since it's gravity defying, you could approach this using the same techniques as a spike (like Sora from Kingdom Hearts) or approach it like an ahoge. With the latter, you can create a thin foam base (or thin wire and tape, etc. etc.), paint it black, and then glue hair to it in the desired shape, then stick it through the wig cap so it sticks upright. Whichever method you chose, there's some good youtube tutorials on it.

If you're talking about ordering a premade, you'd be looking at sites like Micocostumes. And be aware that you'd only be receiving the fabric parts of the costume. The guns and armor very likely wouldn't come with it even if you could find this seemingly niche character.

You're likely going to have to commission a seamstress / sewist. You have to seek one out yourself. You can look at places like Facebook groups, twitter, and instagram through the tags. And again, you'd likely only be buying the fabric dress and maaaaybe some of the belts unless you can find a prop maker too.

I can't give you a specific price estimate because I'm not the maker but the entire costume would be a small down payment on a car most likely. If you reduce it just to the fabric components and maximum the head and shoulder armor, it could be a couple hundred dollars.

Like I said, this is my first time commissioning custom cosplay so I don't know if I'm overpaying, underpaying or what. The $2000+ one sounds like a scam, since it would be the average price of a costume in general, and I checked the pictures that some costumes they made definitely do not fit that price range from how average(?) they look. If I bought

could I cut sections of white fleece and glue them to the sides to make Holland's patterned jacket? Or should I get a white one and then dye the black parts black? Or cut up a black one to sew on white sections?
No way I can make one from scratch unless I find someone else to do it for me. Even sewing together segments will be a task of mythic difficulty for me considering I fiddle for awhile just to put buttons back on and they always snap off again soon because apparently I never use enough thread. That's why I was thinking of fabric glue using the black jacket itself as the base for adding the white sections, but maybe that's absolute madness I'm simply unable to see.

It took me a two months of sniping to find the mid-calf sneakers. Holy fuck I hate that his design uses a reference to a contemporary sneaker line that is now out of production. I delved into the amazon mines hoping that someone decided to make a knockoff. I found only one, for women, and almost all of their sizes were out of stock, including the size equivalent to my men's size shoe. After a couple weeks checking in on their page I finally saw them in stock so I snapped a pair up.

Yeah, you could do that. Will it look neat or finished? No, but if that's the skills in your wheelhouse then you can make something manageable if you work cleanly and neatly. If you know someone in your life who sews, it'd be a very simple change for them to make. Just pay them instead of asking for a favor.

>Or should I get a white one and then dye the black parts black?
No, you can't partially dye that strictly. It'd bleed into different sections and would be a mess to deal with.

>Difficultly putting on buttons
Yeah, buttons use a lot more thread than they look! Going over each section 4 times and then using a thread shank (aka a very big knot then wrapping the thread around it to hold it down) is usually how they're held down. Also most sewists use stronger thread than the rest of the garment if they want to ensure it won't fall off. It's not a hard skill at all if you're willing to try it, but if not, fabric glue could... work? Maybe "passable" is a better word.

Hi anon, lolita here: I'd caution against starting your crossdressing journey with lolita since the fashion has a lot of rules that can be hard even for female wearers to get right at first. Idk how familiar you are with the fashion, but I recommend doing a lot of research on the dos and don'ts of lolita before wearing it. Here are some really good resources for beginners:
http://www.fyeahlolita.com/2009/10/how-to-avoid-being-ita.html
https://lolita-tips.tumblr.com/post/25657675882/a-beginner-lolitas-guide-to-getting-started
https://thelolitaguidebook.tumblr.com/thebasics

Unfortunately, a lot of /cgl/ lolitas are very narrow-minded and insist that only women can wear lolita, but I'd say the community at large is actually pretty accepting of crossdressers and GNC people once you leave 4chan.

I can't give much advice about crossdressing since I'm a girl, but femininity and elegance are very important in lolita regardless of gender. Makeup and wigs can help achieve that, but they might not be necessary depending on how feminine you already look.

The image attached is a good example of a crossdresser (Sena from the band Jiluka) wearing gothic lolita. I'm sure the picture is heavily edited, but you get the general point about the power of hair and makeup.

If you just want to try it out but aren't sure if you'll like it, you can find lots of cheap lolita on Taobao. It probably won't be very good quality since good lolita is pretty expensive, but it might be good if you just want to test the waters and not waste $200+ if you end up deciding that lolita isn't for you

In my personal opinion, it sounds like you're worried about fitting in and the comparing yourself to others. That's the antithesis to the point of the hobby. It's meant to be about YOUR fun. If one new costume a year is what constitutes that for you, then that's your magical number. It's a mash of a Mandarin/standing collar and a modified cape/pilgrim collar, possibly a sailor collar for the backside. AKA it only exists in fantasy. You can make it by modifying patterns for a Mandarin collar + upper half of the bodice. It should not be tough to make.

Yeah, that seems good. I want to add an another prop to it because my budget is more than that.

We selected on a monthly payment, and I just realized that $350 is supposed to add on that $300.
It's more of my fault of assuming things instead of asking to be sure but damn, I wish I can walk back on the adding the extra prop. I'm not sure if I can add "Can I pay for the first prop first?" or "Sorry, I misread the price, can you put the extra prop on hold/can the extra prop be taken off?"

At least from a male perspective, 9 times out of 10 you should use a wig. You can maybe get away with using your own hair if the style is short, very similar to your day-to-day look, something you are experienced with styling, or intentionally messy. Like, I've seen natural hair used for Kaneda, high-hold styling done for Wolverine, or growing out hair for months to be Winter Soldier. But if you want ANY sort of anime style or color get a wig - real hair isn't going to hold its shape all day on the sweaty con floor and a 5-buck can of Party City spray-on color isn't going to get nice even coverage. Plus with a wig you can spend time styling and prepping it long beforehand, then put it on and be done with a minute or two of primping day-of rather than spending an hour in your hotel room in front of the mirror.

The top part of dresses is called a bodice. A bodice with no skirt is just a blouse. I've never heard of buying just the bodice part to sew to a skirt. If you want a simple button up bodice like in the picture, you might look at thrift stores for collared button up shirts. They're very common, and you can remove the collar pretty easily to get something similar to the picture. A lot of them are 100% cotton and can be dyed any color.

This is very interesting. Because while I found places that have good and varied fabrics in Japan I can't say the same for laces. Sure, there are a few that have some (even Japan made laces), but they pale in comparison with China and Taobao, where there seems to be literal millions. In fact laces.taobao alone trumps anything I saw in Japan. A shame because I know [some] Jap and navigating Japanese internet is infinitely better than the utter shit that is Taobao, which lately has become unbrowseable. Rakuten on the other hand is a pleasure to use (well, except the few stores that don't take gaijin CCs).

I haven't looked for laces for a while now. I'll give Japan another shot next time.

It's really not that bad, friend. Don't be so hard on yourself. It's just in the working stages before being finished. It's not an easy fabric or shape to work with.

I'm ntayrt, but before taking your garment apart, I'd suggest trimming the seam allowance and clipping the corners (ie. clipping vertically into the fabric every half inch or so along the curves and taking triangles of fabric from the corner parts to allow the non-stretch fabric to ease around those corners). If that doesn't work, try experimenting with stitch length on some spare pieces. If THAT doesn't work, try using a walking foot and monitoring the amount of tug the stretch fabric is getting because it does look like some stitches are not evenly spaced or in the same direction.

Okay it doesn't look as bad as I thought it'd be.

Your main issue appears to be stabilizing the fabric. It's basically getting stretched out during the sewing process.
Ways to work with it (you can use any one or mix of the techniques):
1) stabilize the fabric. Stay tape, wash-off stabilizer, spray-on fabric stiffener, etc etc. There are lots of products out there and different knit fabrics handle them to varying degrees of success.
2) walking foot for your sewing machine. Unfortunately the pressure of the foot squashing delicate knits again the feed dogs is enough to warp some fabrics.
3) the right stitch/right needle. Given how it doesn't look like you have skipped or loose stitches, I assume you're already using the proper needle for the job. The right stitch might mean longer stitch length, a narrow zigzag stitch, and/or dedicated stretch stitch setting on your machine so that the thread doesn't warp and push the fabric. Again, this part takes experimenting on scraps to find the right length/width of stitches for your fabric.
