So I know there are plenty of reputable places to get contact lenses, but I am curious about what I should do if I have astigmatism. I know that Pinky Paradise has a few toric lenses, but they are only in naturally occurring colors like blue, green, brown, hazel etc. What if you want vibrant shades?
I guess I am looking for some anecdotes. In my case, my astigmatism isn't too bad, I am -7 SPH and 2.25 CYL in my right eye, and -8.5 SPH -1.25 CYL in my left. I was wondering if it would be unsafe to get some contacts that were just in my SPH prescription to wear for photos, less than an hour at a time and then just wear my regular lenses to cons and whatnot.
Surely there are lots of cosplayers out there with just as bad of astigmatism that figure something out.

Are there any good resources for designing and building convincing hand and arm coverings to look like armor or metal prosthetics? I'm working on a Jhin getup but short of reinventing the wheel I can't think of a clean way to put the metal arm together. I'm anticipating probably using EVA but I dont want to make things harder than they need to be either.

I’m new to cosplay, so I’m currently working on my first one of Battler. I have it like mostly complete, but I’m unsure of how to get the Ushiromiya crest on the coat? (Circled in pic related) Is there some sort of iron on technique or stickers I could use. Something that could come off later may be preferable, because I spent a lot of money on the suit and may want to use it for something else at a later point. But if thats not an option something permanent can work as well.

You can heat the pleather with a hair dryer to make it more pliable. This will help the hem fold over more easily and the needle will be able to pierce the fabric more easily too. If the pleather is sticking to your sewing machine foot, try using a walking foot or Teflon/plastic foot instead. You can also put a piece of tape on the underside of the foot.

How can I keep his arm things from sliding down?

Depending on what's causing your sliding you may need to use an internal velcro strap or look into skinsafe waxes.

I'm going to be count orlok (nosferatu) for Halloween. I'm ready to pull the trigger on fabric for the coat, except there's one little problem. I honestly am a bit unsure whether I should make his coat gray or black. In some shots it looks completely black and in others it looks gray with darker cuffs. I feel like it would LOOK better in black, but accuracy is also important to me. It is a black and white film, so it could be brown or purple for all I know. The fabric I'll be using is boiled wool (~$40/yd) so it's not like I can buy the needed yardage in two different colors and make two coats.

Why not use clear straps? Even if you only put two points of connection instead of four they will be held up consistently. If you put one on the back and on the inside of the arm they won't be obvious in photos.

I would recommend some though -- even if only a no-makeup look because it does make an impact on a cosplay. If you have a large pattern collection, how do you store it? I've recently been bestowed one. I'm talking about 500 commercial pattern envelopes here. I really have no idea how to store this shit. I have a ton of patterns as well and store them all in binders on an Ikea Kallax shelf (pic rel). For me, the patterns are sorted by tops/bottoms/dresses/other and then by decade (e.g. 70s/80s) for normie patterns, and alphabetically by series then character name for cosplay. I use binders + clear sheet protectors to protect the pattern envelope and it makes it easier to find/take out cosplay patterns.

Is this concealer the wrong color?

For making a "leather" harness, will EVA foam work? Or should I be using some sort of vinyl or faux leather?

Hell yeah it's yellower than your skintone. The concealer would only work if you're applying yellow-ish foundation on yourself then the concealer over it to match.

Seconding sorting regular commercial by type of clothing if you're mainly sewing for cosplay, then another section for specifically cosplay patterns.

Once you use a pattern/cut it up, don't try to stuff it back into the original envelope. Instead get cheaper thin folders/binders or bulk 9 x 12" manila envelopes and store them in there with fabric samples and other small leftovers from the project, write the cosplay name and maybe pattern name on the cover if it's not transparent.

These are both way too yellow. It can be hard to tell from a photo, but you definitely have a neutral skin tone. Also please don't misinterpret this, but your ethnic makeup may factor into in your undertone too and you might want to take that into account. I'm half latina, with the latina half being mostly mestizo, so I have a very warm but fair skin tone with an almost orange undertone. The white half of my family is all Scottish and Irish (with a lot of redheads) so they have more pink skin, including relatives of mine who are about the same shade as me.

The relative proportion of men to women who do cosplay, couple or not, is low to start with. You recognize a couple cosplay only when both parties are together, so you're not counting in the men who are confident or free to wander the con on their own in cosplay without some girl forcibly tagging along.

Trying to make a Spider-Man cosplay next year that's actually good and not cheap dye sublimation with over designed textures and highly drawn on muscles that only the Raimi Movies used but no other Spidey costume did.

I found 2 Spider-Man pattern makers who align with my ideals for a suit, Scratch Threads and Ice Man Studios. The 1st told me they don't have the time to make a custom costume. The 2nd one hasn't replied to my question yet (here's hoping). It bums me out as Scratch Thread has a mission statement (pic related) that I fully agree with

Ok, to explain more clearly
1.Commission a costume pattern, they design, measure out, and create the seam areas in the patterns. That is the job that the likes of SC and IMS have done
2. I recieve a file that has the pattern
3. I either sew or order a dye sublimated suit
4. I add cosmetics(The logo, mask eyes, raised webbing, shoes)
So I'm currently at #1, searching for someone who lines up with my thinking. SC and IMS can't, and I'm stumped

I don't have freckles nor I ever wear makeup outside of cosplay so I'm sorry but I really can't give you any advice on this! I do have a few small flat moles on my face that bother me (picrel, want them gone for cosplay reasons), but my dermatologist said she would be unwilling to remove them so I'm going to have to find someone else to do it. I honestly usually just Photoshop them out of my photos because it's simpler than trying to cover them with foundation and not look cakey

How well can makeup cover noticeable stubble? I've just been learning makeup and though it has no issues covering my face the day I shave, my beard hair regrows fairly quickly. If I try shaving again within 3 or 4 days then my skin seems to be at heavy risk of cuts which I'm assuming I don't want to put makeup over a cut and my skin doesn't react well to epilating/waxing.

Trying to paint flexipaint into plastic. I choosed that because the plastic is a armor part and a bit bendy to fit my shape, so I if it flex I need flexible paint too.

It would be a good idea to get more than you need and see how much you can double up on it before it gets too hard to see (to prevent your blindfold from being too transparent to observers)
If you tack the layers together in a matching thread, your stitches will be nearly invisible especially on black fabric. I will also say that due to the loose weave, you really need to hem it. Raw edges will unravel very fast
Cotton also won't feel gross on your skin like a synthetic will after a long day at a con. Silk would feel even nicer, but silk gauze of a similar translucency is harder to find and more expensive

If you're new to cosplaying, I wouldn't recommend trying to make the whole thing from scratch by yourself as it's a rather complicated costume. You should buy the hat, belts, and necklace and commission the base garments if you can. Capes are /beg/ level so you can easily make that. Go for a mid-weight sateen (not satin) for the cape.

In short, only stuff related to fantasy clothing or armor, not Superhero stuff. I know cheap under $100 Spidey suits exist, but I'm not going that route. And I know RPC studio has some good replica suits, but many Spidey cosplay fans agree their custom made suit is of the same quality as the under $100 stuff

Anon, you're assuming we have one specific person in mind and are just being too lazy to link them. I'll speak for myself, but there isn't anyone I know of in particular that does the type of work you're looking for (mostly because you have a very specific service you want done). I'm giving you guidance as to where to direct your search next because the places you mentioned searching don't have very many options. I know where commissioners are posting because I follow a shit ton of them on there. However, their work is in different types of costumes, so naturally they're not going to be helpful to you. I understand that you're wary from your long searches, but it's unfair to pin the blame on the people who are trying to aim you in the right direction just because you didn't get the answer you wanted.

This here is your problem. Treat these sites as if it were google except your search terms are going to be hashtags. Check out tags like #cosplaycommissions or search under the #spidermancosplay tag and start reading captions to see if any of the cosplayers credited who made the costume/pattern for them. And with facebook, literally just go to the group section and search "Cosplay Commisions", then join a few different groups, and put out a bulletin for what you're looking for.

So another update.. I scraped off what I could and tried to reapply the heat transfer. Unfortunately there seemed to be leftover residue on the right side so the transfer paper did not work. I heard people talk about using certain chemicals that could apparently remove this stuff, but I’m scared of trying it and ruining the suit more. Does anyone have experience with doing something like that that?
I think my only other option would be to somehow sew the crest on myself. However I’ve never sewn before so im not sure how I would go about doing that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When I made mine, I used fusible web (like Heat n' Bond, Pellon Wonder-Under). I ironed it to the gold fabric, traced on the design, cut it out by hand, removed the fabric backing and ironed it onto the base suit. Does the packaging have any suggestions for removal? Whatever you do try, I'd suggest doing a spot test on the inside of the jacket just in case it reacts to the fabric negatively.

If you can't take it off at all, maybe you could apply the next one onto a spare piece of white fabric, carefully cut it out and fray check the edges (this is a liquid that slightly hardens the edges), and apply it very carefully to the jacket with fabric glue?

Oof, you're stuck it with anon. Any paint applied to silk would 1) give it a wet stain 2) look like shit. It's too lightweight to really carry that paint and it's bound to crack. I'd say dont mess with it. People are less likely to notice a mistake than a bad paint job.

So I made a Chainsaw Man helmet out EVA foam and the chain teeth were 3D printed. So i'm having issues wearing it comfortably due to it being front heavy, not setting up top my head, as well as visibility. Look up fursuit head tutorials for both issues. You can use extra foam padding inside or create like a “hat” inside with mesh (i used elastic) so it sits on your head better. I’m bad at explaining how i made the hat for my 3D printed helmet to sit better is i did a strip across the sides of my face to the back of my head and then a strip that goes across the top of my head and meets with the back of the other strip. Gold without the metallic sheen is just goldenrod/dark yellow.

There is no metallic-sheen gold dye, only yellow and dark yellow dye that can get your fabric to be an approximate matte gold color. THe only way to put that shine into it would be to start with a shiny fabric, like satin.

It would be a lot easier and save heartbreak to simply re-buy the right fabric.

If you want super-saturated colors, go with Japanese brands. Their lenses usually have multiple layers of color printed on the lens to make them more opaque. Check out Chinese or Korean brands for a more "natural" look (the color is less opaque but not as semi-transparent as normie colored lenses).

I once did a cosplay for Tatsu from Way of the Househusband and I did the face scar using rigid collodion, it'll cause skin to tighten and kinda sink in wherever you put it, creating a real 3-d effect of a scar without needing to pile on makeup and blend like other scar techniques I've seen. Just place some nude lipstick in the area for color and coat with the collodion, then top it with some foundation cause it usually comes out shiny. Honestly it probably won't work in your case cause those scars are huge and all over the back where you'll probably be moving around, but the stuff is cheap (like 8 bucks on Amazon) and maybe worth a shot

worba is textured so you generally have to use layers of glue , gesso, etc to smooth it out. plus its still pretty expensive so doing armor sets with it can be pretty damn expensive.

just buy some high density eva foam. they are typically more firm than the typical eva floor mats you can get at hardware stores. plus they generally cut and sand better so youre left with smoother results.
personally i have used Sks Props HD foam and TNT cosplays foam.
nobody is going to fucking care if your armor pieces are actually hard, which is im assuming why you want to go with worbla.
just cut your pieces straight and give it a good paint job.

Learning makeup is kind of similar, just a lot of reference, research, practice, and growing. Instead of thrift store fabric, rely on internet reviews of products to get started. Then pay the extra bucks for the good stuff. Youtube is once again a fantastic resource.

It's just a decorative black leather strap. It's just a design choice, kind of like how spy movies will have pointless leather thigh straps. You'll start getting used to it when you start cosplaying more.

Because this is so stylistic, I think you could go any route really. If you want it 2d and painterly, you could paint EVA foam. If you want it to look more like real flame, you could use Crystal Art Worbla or other plastic or even fabric with wire.

gonna add to this. this cosplay has 4 pieces besides her hat. under skirt, blouse jumper skirt and apron. it's basically lolita already, most touhou is after all. using lolita patterns will work, but you'll need a fuller, longer underskirt.

Do any women have experience cosplaying with silicone breasts forms? I bought made foam breasts for my cosplay and tried spray painting to contour to make the fabric blend in with my skin more but it only looks okay in photos and not in person.

Pretty much all the breasts forms I've seen are for flat chested people or women who've gotten mastectomy. I know it will look wear on the top side but maybe if I keep it close to my chest and blend it, maybe it will look good enough.

I don't have a "brand" account where I have a huge following, make money from cosplaying, or have a reason (besides e-peen) to care about my metrics and I haven't noticed any appreciable decrease in interaction on my posts. I still post there and don't see any major "I'm leaving Insta - follow my account on [x] instead!" movements.
FWIW I have noticed that the rare reel I make does seem to take off running in terms of interaction, and a few big-name accounts I follow have been sharing that their reach on photos has been artificially dropping (that is, IG actually doesn't show the posts to as many of their followers). But for casual use it's really just the same as always.
