10792202 No.10792202 [Reply] [Original]

So here we are, a new thread. We’ve had a few cons. They might have scratched the itch, but nothing is quite like it was. There are a whole host of summer cons right around the corner but no one seems to care!

Is there discord drama? Probably, you just don’t know. It’s either dead, a secret channel or a completely different server.

Here are some up and comers, literally stolen off a different website so excuse me if the dates are wrong or if it exclusively favours some no name cons you’ve never heard of.

The formatting will probably mess up, but I’m a filthy phone poster and I’ve had this written in notes ready to copy paste post as soon as the old thread dies but it keeps churning along. Let’s help it make page 10 and leave, it can take all the drama posting with it. Step into the light and be reborn for hope and joy (experience may vary) are right around the corner.

It's because it seems like everyone who runs a UK con isn't doing it from a business perspective, they do it because they want their dick sucked for simply existing and clout.

Doing a big con is a lot of effort, from the larger events I follow they are in the convention halls literally months before anything happens. Some even operate warehouses where they test-build their stands. And I appreciate events have to start somewhere but it feels like the incentive to grow just isn't there when you can rock up to a sports hall or uni a week in advance.

Money. Space is expensive as fuck, like 10-12x the cost it would be in bumfuck USA which tends to be most of these big events originally start out. Plus all that extra cost has to go somewhere, either you pay shitloads for your ticket which reduces the number of people that attend or you cheap out on everything and make it cheap so people attend a show that's got fuck all there.

Ghetto is being kind.

UK "cons" might as well be "let's all drink until we need a new liver" and "we are not leaving this shithole uni dorm until we've flooded every shared toilet more than it already has been".

Doesn't matter if their moms made their shitty cosplays or con logos are written in comic sans ms. Anime talk becomes a side attraction. Who needs deep philosophical discussions about hidden metaphors in Madoka or AoT or whatever, when you can drink this gallon of pure alcohol, or jump over a bonfire and catch your balls on fire?

Am I whining? Yea, guess I am, whatever, don't give a shit. Go to cons that don't have UK in their addresses in them for actual anime fun. If you want non-sober chaos, I ain't stopping you

KGT was brilliant mate, the only performances that were slightly lackluster was the firestick guy who could have done with wearing a cosplay and the ragtime dancers where the girl clearly knew the routine and the guy was forced to learn it the week before, even then both of these were enjoyable and entertaining.

Everything else was well above the expected standard of this sort of thing.

Games room wasn't the best I've seen but wouldn't call it shambles. That room does have a lot of space to fill but they had plenty of stuff in there.

i suppose you'll only really know if you ask em but sounds not really clever to do so, i suppose if you would ever do, keep it civil cause they prolly feel bad about it, don't think they're all smiles now

well, if they're not from the uk, they either planned a holiday perhaps (why you would go here anyways) and bought tickets sometime, that's what I would think. shame to let them go to waste then. and going by previous messages, they sound fucking awkward, maybe seeing you was a huge surprise to them and they didn't really know what to say either yet they wanted to, hence creating such an awkward situation. and hey, seeing someone like that out of the blue may come over as an enormous shock to you as well. don't know how long you two have been in touch.

Dude followed us to the games room and kept sitting next to us on the main stage when half the seats were empty
>i guess anime cons arent his cup of tea and probably just felt heavily out of place there and just walked around like a retard, been there before save bothering people
Been there done that before too, would've been ok if it wasn't for above
>anyways it also seems like there were hapless attempts to make up or something to me but what do i know, get being alone at cons sucks
Dude was mumbling and shaking every time he tried to talk when we clearly said no and walked away, eventually told security but they didn't do much

All in all the con was fun and we didn't let him ruin our moment, but wish he stopped following us everywhere

>> No.10801300

alright, i get your points, dude definitely should have kept his distance and while following may happen, if it happened frequently then I get you and your partner may get pretty uncomfortable. i get it's somewhat nice seeing someone you are a bit familiar with at a strange place but there's just limits, i guess that person never got social cues plus I suppose it was loud as well, wouldn't be surprised if he didn't hear you clearly though

kinda wondering what made them a creep anyways actually, maybe they are in a really dark place and are just idk, became one lonely isolated mess, been there as well and that is something I don't wish on anyone. but got my friends and gf in the end, loneliness can screw someone up really and well maybe that dude enjoyed the friendship with ya and attempted too obsessively to regain it just not to be alone. it just rarely works out.

but good, at least this is over, would things even be different if he didn't follow you like a puppy and just tried to enjoy themselves? im still glad for you erine that you got to enjoy the con with your partner, and next time he won't be there. sure he'll never attend one again actually.

Anon, I know you want to help people and believe that they can be fixed, but the unfortunate truth is that some people can't. They are toxic to their bones and ultimately the best thing for everyone, even the toxic elements is to identify and flush them from the community do they can't hurt anyone else. Like what the gulls have done with their toxic and abusive elements. They got purged, cancelled, and the scene as a whole is now better off.

Stop justifying toxic behaviour, please, for everyone's sake

i tend to see the best in people as much as i can and I think most have a good side at least, even hidden. I'm not excusing the behaviour from him to Erine but I do think he felt regret and sorry by crying at a con, and I'm sure in private as well.

But good, I'll knock it off then. I'm just saying, someone I used to know felt at some point so much guilt and shame about a similar thing while just losing everything they had they killed themselves. I think in the end there was just a lot of miscommunication which could have been prevented with one good conversation, and I didn't know them as a bad person. It just reminds me of that. That's all. We don't know much about this person at all, by the way, but anyways, I'm also not saying this person is innocent.

Kitacon dealers Hall was alright. Some nice artists some shit artists a couple figure vendors, bubble tea, there were some led masks that were pretty cool, a booth selling dvds/bluerays/cds, somone selling anime nurse cosplay accessories and two booths selling some cheap prop katanas and weapons at a steep mark up but people tend to love those as easy cosplay props.

It was decent but not a single manga anywhere which I'd a shame because no where near me stocks that sort of stuff.

I guess you have to cut some slack to it as it was the first warwick con since covid.

Kita review:

>Venue
Arts Centre is even better now, loads of comfy seating areas and the new restaurant is fucking great. Still best venue.
>Dealers room
40% shit art, 40% shit art with a tranny flag superimposed on top, 20% actual anime stuff. Did buy a few things, but very little choice unless you wanted terrible fetish art or wanted to show off your twitter flags.
>Events
Actually really good. Choice was limited but every event and panel I went to was very enjoyable and worth the time.
>Games room
Way too spread out and closed too fucking early, but good choice of games.
>Parties
Didn't attend lol

Wasn't the best con but wasn't the disaster I expected either. I had fun at least. Really needed more attendees for a better atmosphere, but it was a neat little event. 6/10 not bad but needed improvement.

I feel like cons are more consolidated than ever. We rarely get independant small cons anymore at least in the south. Just seems like all the small to mid sized cons are run by the same 2 or 3 cliqs. I can confirm this. I went to both hentai ‘quizzes.’ For starters having 2 events that are basically the identical concept is odd in itself and you can really tell they had trouble filling the panel schedule otherwise a duplicate wouldn’t have been green lit.

The ‘big dumb hentai quiz’ on Saturday was done by a guy who’d apparently been told last minuet he had to censor basically everything in the quiz. Instead of quitting (what I might have done in his situation) He censored his panel (which was entirely ‘what happens next’ hentai clips) He heavily censored the clips using quotes from the committee and basically used the event to take the Mickey out of the committee.

The second hentai panel on the sunday ‘super happy fun time hentai panel’ was less censored but apparently a shorter video section was also cut from this. In the middle of this panel warwick uni staff came in to complain that there were children outside who might hear things.

I raised this at the feedback panel and was told there had been numerous complaints from warwick uni staff and even some con goers about a long hentai clip in the previous kita hentai panel. The ‘butt vampire’ one. Basically the venue put their foot down, started talking about ‘obscenity law,’ and basically vetoed future adult content. According to committee all future panels with ‘adult material’ will be censored to some degree.

Committees position was roughly summarised as ‘we are a business and this is what we have to do to keep this venue.’ Apparently ‘super happy fun time hentai panel’ was only as relatively uncensored as it was because the runner is married to a committee member.

I remember when kita went from a 16+ con to an 18+ con. The argument being it was getting hard to keep doing things like the hentai panels and hentai screenings when they had to police the younger con goers trying to sneak in.

Incidentally also raised the way issues like this had been dealt with in the past. Committees response was something like kita isn’t the same event it used to be, different team, different ethos and they wouldn’t even know how things used to be done in the early days of the con because the don’t really have any one from back then even involved in the periphery.

Yes but as I recall they more or less got kicked out for 'manga shagging.'

It's not that surprising. Didn't they book along side a baptists convention one year? And then the gadget show another. Hilton banned a girl from going into the party wearing a rope harness over her jeans and t shirt. I believe it was the Hilton staff that objected to the late night hentai screening because (I've been told) some kid caught a view of it as the door swung open. It was the Hilton shut down the late night party early for noise. A hotel like that only works for a rowdy noisy con if you can more or less book out the hotel. It has 789 guest room a lot of them doubles. If every attendee had booked rooms the Hilton instead of the cheeper near by hotels then maybe it could have worked.

I understand that point of view. It's a bit like the rocky horror picture show. Half of the fun is watching the new people enjoy their baptism of fire. And It does take a real effort to keep them original. I gave scowny a hard time in the past for too much of his panel just being slides of /d/'s weird imposable anatomy pics. but at least he tried to innovate, with life on girth etc. Hentai panel needs a fresh new format. Something more than just 'look at weird picture x' Personally I'd like to see some one try and do educational and funny (with a good measure of degen added).

>> No.10803868

When I think about it the cycle of emotions a hentai panel should take you on should be something like
>My goodness hentai is F***ed up.
>But that bit just there is making me kinda horny, how F***ed up am I.

Long ago I wanted to do something like this but beyond explaining what comiket and doujin circles are couldn't really think of much more material, and I don't think I'd be talented enough to make it interesting either. I guess there are corners of Japan and other conventions that could be explored through the same lens though. Either way, something like this which ties into the culture would be much more interesting than examples I've seen in the past.

Kita's problem is that it still thinks it's a small con. Before you'd only go to Kita for the parties and it styled itself 'the party con'. Now it's stepped up to fill Aya's place and doesn't know how to be a big con. So you have every room closing down early, empty schedules, things being badly organised etc. It's been repeatedly raised to the committee but they either don't know what to do or don't care.

Bring back Aya and boot Kita back to being a hotel con, everyone would be happier.

>> No.10804311

How hard is hosting and scheduling a con realistically? I'm not talking about hosting my own con, but actually making a con good. What are the complications that are stopping cons from being able to host back-to-back volunteer event panels all day and keeping stuff open late?

>> No.10804332

>>10804299
I mean I agree with that last point. I don't think kita was by design a 'party con' I think it just happened by accident because they ran their party till late, one of the 1st cons to do so, and people happened to like it. I think one of the reasons it worked so well was there were other things to do though while the party went on. People would flit between party / karaoke / showings etc. That formula didn't really break down till the move to Warwick. I don't recall aya running late panels either desu. I think that's just a venue issue.

>> No.10804339

>>10804311
I the case of kita I think it was a lack of people volunteering to do panels. I think the that the con was moved several times can at least in part be blamed for that. It felt like the con would never happen at one point so that has to put some people off committing to the work involved in running an event. (knowing their panels may be censored isn't going to help this in future years)

The other side is the venue. Warwick clearly isn't willing to keep it's art centre / roots open till late, that's where the space for panels / gaming / showings is.

Also this year kita seemed to have real trouble sourcing licences to show anime. The showing line up changed at the last minuet and there were long gaps between them. I think anime distribution companies no longer see anime conventions as a benefit to their PR. I guess they think they have better ways to reach consumers through the web and cinemas.

>> No.10804388

>>10804311
People don’t want to run events. People want to attend them. It’s harder to fill an events schedule now a days. Same reason you tend not to get con books, no one submits anything. Ignoring that, filling the schedule, then spreading it through the days so people can attend nit creating bottlenecks or putting events too early or against other things meaning no one will go. It’s one of the more fiddly things to do, plus you have to balance that agasint what rooms are a available from the venue and how popular the events will be so you don’t put a sell out event in a room with a capacity far lower.

The early Kitas didn’t run events against the party’s to deliberately make it the only thing to do. This created the party con atmosphere and it became established.

Anime licensors haven’t allowed fansubs or upcoming licensed stuff to be shown at cons since 2005. Since then you had to go through them and see what they offered you. Prior to that cons were small time enough that the companies didn’t care.

>> No.10804396

That's the big thing I always say about conventions, especially these days. You can lead a weeb to a convention, but you can't make them run panels.

At the end of the day, the convention is working with what they are given and doing their best with it. Espeically with the pandemic break that is also killer for events, because a lot of first time event runners do so because they had real good times at previous event and thought "I have an idea to get involved next year", with a 2-3 year break that doesn't happen, and even the regular panel runners are possibly thinking "It's been 2-3 years I just want to enjoy the con myself." so hopefully as things start to open up we will see a return to great panels. You do have to remember, there are a bunch of 18-21 year olds who Kitacon was their first con simply because they were too young to attend previously.

Yeah, for some reason a family brought their kids in the middle of the arts center to play on the cushion-thing outside the theare/woods-scawen and they were there for like two hours just lingering while the hentai panel was going on so staff had to say "Please avoid the Lewd chatter on your way out because there is a family there and if they go karen and complain to the venue the con might get in trouble."

>>10803865

I've been to some really good hentai panels and some really bad ones, some are just cringe fests of "Look at this art I found of Ice-Queen from Adventure time with a car sized dick." or "Hey check it out, it's yet another Sonic-the-hedgehog foot tickling image." which are only fun in small doses.

Personally, this years Super Happy Fun Time Hentai panel was one of the most entertaining I've been to. Everyone had cards labelled A, B, C, or D, and had to stand up all together, sitting down when they got a question wrong. It was fun audience participation with low stakes and investment since you know, you could sit down if you were uncomfortable sharing that you got 9 questions right in a row. The "Higher-or-Lower Bukkake" was fun and dumb and all in all, the panel didn't have to rely on anything fucked up for chuckles and all in all was relatively tame but still very entertaining.

>> No.10804526

>>10803884
While it's great to have a little back and forth, relying on audience paticipation is cyanide to a panel if no one steps up, or whoever steps up isn't as witty and entertaining as they are in their head.

I remember the "Anime Blind Date" panel that was 100% reliant on getting 3-6 cosplayers to step up to the stage and be able to act in character and improvise on the spot and I tell you what, they were not.

They lucked out and got a couple cosplayers with charisma near the end that salvaged the panel but it was basically hitting a gold in the swamp, without them it would have just been piss-warm cringe from start to finish because it was relying on your audience to be filled with cosplayers experienced with improv experience.

>The early Kitas didn’t run events against the party’s to deliberately make it the only thing to do. This created the party con atmosphere and it became established.
You say early kita but I don’t remember kita 3 or 4 being like that. I could go digging for the schedules in my old con books if necessary. In fact didn’t kita 3 run panels after the party at like 2am?

I take you point about licensing recent anime but again I actually like retro anime. I’m a retro anime fan and there is still plenty of obscure stuff from the 90s/00s I’d have been tempted to catch at a showing. Again promoting the back catalogue doesn’t seem to be something newer distributors care about. Even when they’ve paid good money to buy up companies with extensive back catalogs.

As for panels I think you’ve a point in so far as it’s very intimidating to run a panel at your first con. Or if you’re at the con alone. And I think that’s more common just after the pandemic. It might get better later.

Like pairing up a sweet and innocent character with a bunch of incorrigible letch characters. Like putting card captor Sakura with 3 dommy mommy’s.

It’s funny for the audience but you need good sports for volunteers.

A friend of mine wants to run a panel about asexual characters in anime and media because obviously yaoi/yuri/ecchi content is everywhere in anime and at conventions but asexuality is never really explored because it's kind of hard to do that. There are a few interesting characters and representation out there but not too much, especially when you disregard the shounen "fightsexual" characters like Luffy who have a lack of sexual interest because it's a gag when he rejects sexy lady and embraces punching bad guys. That said, I'm not sure if there is a market for that kind of thing without it just becoming across as LGBTumblr flagwaving.

Cosplay chess is scripted, all the chess moves are set up and volentueers basically have time during the rehersal to come up with a skit for each of their captures. So it's not 100% improvised but like, improvised a couple hours ago and then repeated on stage for the first time. Usually if you see a player get on the stage like 4-5 times they are often part of the team that is running the event. I enjoy it though it's a fun little spectacle.

Cosplay Blind Date honestly seems like a concept that could work well, but when it ran they entirely rawdogged the audience, both the bachelorette asking the questions and the three dates behind the screen were entirely pulled up out of the audience and given no prompts other than "Okay, ask Date #1 a question." and it was incredibly cringe because people had no idea what they were doing and suprisingly most random people are bad at improv.

To do this kind of panel right, you'd need at least some level of scripted content. Start with your 3 Cosplay dates as people on the team running it and have a clip board with 20 preset questions. Each of those 3 cosplayers knows the list of questions and has a good in character response to each question. The bachelor/ette asking the questions can be from the audience and be given the clip board to select questions from.

That way none of the dates are randoms who realise too late they suck at public speaking and improv, the event is funny and enjoyable to watch and everything plays out roughly as expected for the first part without any major crash and burn. THEN after the first round where everyone knows what kind of responses are expected and what kind of questions are being asked, and after everyone is loosened up and having a good time, THEN you bring randoms from the audience up to be dates to be quizzed.

>> No.10805626

that idea is actually really cool
semi scripted seems like a happy medium that alows real random input and audiance involvement without having it be awkward

would an additon of "sleeper agents" work you think?

You really need to be mates with con organizers if you want to run a panel at cons. I've asked to run panels a couple times but get ghosted. Even when there's a lack of panels.
