Is it though? They've seen the massive drop in quality and lack of actual cute releases since brands like Meta have begun catering to hamplanets. They've seen the complete deterioration and bastardization of lolita in the west as the community and our indie brands have started to glorify obesity. It probably pains them to see yet another OG brand go down this path...

How is the quality dropping and lack of cute releases being caused by the appearance of huge sizing on the scene?

I thought that quality dropping over the years and more "size inclusivity" over the years had very little to do with each other. Just symptoms of the times as they are. Some brands want to have you pay them 350 for a polyester dress, and 120 for a bag that will peel in 3 days. Also % of overweight people is rising everywhere (or nearly everywhere) including japan.
I think a drop in quality would have happened even if brands would have stuck with sizing as it was in the 2000s. Brands moving production overseas and the move from cotton to poly would have happened anyway.

To go on a bit of a tangent; japan is getting seriously fat. Doctors in japan are advocating for the use of the hong kong BMI system since it more accurately reflects weight risks of japanese bodies, which is the following
- normal weight = 18.5 – 22.9 (international = 18.5~24.9)
-overweight = 23.0 – 24.9 (international= 25~29.9)
-obese =25+ (international= 30+)
According to these more suitable bmi categories the actual obesity statistic in japan is 27.2% (source; our world in data) which is really high although not as high as the US's.

But an obese japanese woman is not exactly the same size as an obese westerner, so I wonder how many dresses Atelier Pierrot has made in the size 3.
The fattest lolitas tend to wear sweet lolita so I doubt there's going to be a lot of sales of the size 3.

AP doesn't offer 2 sizes and their quality has dropped worse than Meta, if you could even say Meta's has at all. BTSSB has the same quality and the 3 cuts they tend to do for prints are essentially different sizes.

I can fit standard Japanese one size just fine and agree fat people may have a harder time looking good in general, and that really applies in lolita, so it would be good for them to lose weight if they want more options. Even so, I'd much rather fat people have clothes that fit than burst at the seams in something too tight.

It's silly to be upset the brand is making more sizes as literally no one loses. Except people who think fitting into Japanese brand makes them special, which it doesn't. Or people who want to tell fat girls that it's not made in their size therefore they can never wear the fashion. Those types of people are more annoying than a well dressed fatty and often ita as shit.

The main reason is that more resources and labor is being dedicated to creating multiple patterns for their plus and plus plus sizes, which means cutting corners in other areas to keep things at a reasonable price point. Their diversity in terms of cuts is near non-existent at this point too as everything has to include the same sloppy full back shirring, and they've forgone releasing actual socks pretty much entirely (aside from the solid lace topped ones)
for the super thin stretchy ones that snag on everything just to accommodate more sizes.

AP doesn't do multiple sizes and offers fewer cuts and still has an issue with shit quality. BABY quality is nice and they do multiple cuts. Meta is somewhere in between and they do multiple cuts, more varied headwear, and 2-3 sizes. It's clearly not the fatty sizes causing the problem.

sorry to burst your bubble but as someone who is in the clothing indestry, making clothes in multible sizes of one pattern is as easy as pressing one button, if they use grafis10 or grafis12. 90% of clothing brands make their patterns using those pattern programs and even if they don’t modifying pattern to diffirent sizes is in the same leage as just drawing the patterns by hand in the first place.
Making a ready to cut patterns from base pattern is a one day job maybe two if it’s super detailed and adding to that the bigger mesaurments is again one day or two day job depending how detailed the product is.
If we’re talking about mmm dresses they are the most basic shit I’ve ever seen and the pattern those can be done in few hours max. Not saying they ain’t pretty just really basic and even someone with no sewing experiance could sew those if given the right pattern.

If the dresses seem to not sit well then the whole pattern is wack. the imperfections are just easier to hide in smaller/slimmer bodies.

Just because lolita don’t nesseseraly need shapeware is because it’s made so shapeless or mass marketable. there are dresses that would need shapeware to look good and those usually have them build in to hold the shape. And if you would know even the slightest knowledge of this fashion inspiration you would know that the dresses lolita is inspirated from has shapeware to have their shape.
