There's a pretty big difference between touching up a photo's lighting, removing blemishes, etc. and giving yourself an entirely new set of facial features to the point you're in denial about what you look like in reality and having meltdowns on twitter when a brand posts a picture of your real face.

nayrt, I think people are complaining about filters that alter the face (eye size, jawline, etc) not just some innocent editing like adjusting the lighting, the color contrast etc.

And I have to agree that changing the way your face looks by changing your face shape, your eye size, your nose shape and size, etc of your images is an indication that you might have self esteem issues and body image issues.
Even if you don't start off with self esteem issues and body image issues, if you consistently make yourself look different in your pictures then it's highly likely you will develop those issues.

Filtering also hasn't been in j-fash forever. Lots of people in the early days of the internet (before and after mobile phones), taking pictures with their flip phones or with standalone cameras, weren't photoshopping their images to change their faces before sharing them online. That's pretty obvious from a lot of old school images.

All of the editing we're seeing now gradually increased over time. There was a time when someone photoshopping their own face to change it was fairly uncommon. And when that happened (early 2000s) people definitely complained about it and said that person was fake and mentally ill.

people will argue about purikura forever, but there's a big difference between purikura and these face editing apps. they're not the same at all. purikura was supposed to look bad and dumb. it was a thing you did for fun with your friends, not something you posted online. the way apps work now is actually bad for your mental health. a lot of people even get memed into plastic surgery because of the apps and end up botched.(this has happened to a few jfash icons)

Depending on the camera or lens used, your face can photograph differently. This might be shoop, or it might be a combination of weight loss, different makeup and styling, circle lenses, and a different camera. The one with pink hair is clearly a selfie, so she's probably more comfortable and definitely more in control while taking it. I'm not looking to whiteknight O, I'm just saying this for the benefit of anyone who's ever seen a bad picture of themselves. There are multiple factors at play when capturing a person's image.
