going off sailor moon theme, i really love seeing serenity cosplays, it's pretty flexible and you can make it as fancy or as simple as you desire. i would say its pretty content friendly

not a ton of cosplay experience, but plenty of transferable skills + I make clothes for fun sometimes

If you’re going to learn foam smithing, and you’re an absolute beginner, just take up a pattern from Etsy and print out as need be. It saves literally hours worth of trial and error if you don’t know what you’re doing and just makes it so all you have to do is worry about foam depth, strapping and some painting.

If you’re dead set on it, I use a pestle and mortar and a heat gun to curve my stuff but you can look up foam anvils for similar results.

To throw some recs back at you, I love Jinx and Zelda for you. If you're looking for technically simple, but looks good if done well: try school uniforms. The persona series has some great ones to chose from, but especially 5 imo. I could definitely see you doing Ann, Kasumi, or Makoto. Or you could look towards their fighting costumes too. Haru's is pretty and technically intermediate.

I've been building foam armors for like a decade. Back then we didn't have etsy and had to pattern out shit, so you had a pretty high chance of your arm piece or your leg piece not fitting you properly. But since etsy exists, that cuts out like 99% of the work since you can just print out a universal pattern and then modify it as need be if you know how to manipulate foam into specific shapes.

Short answer ; Yes. Sanding is easy mode when you get a dremel, and know how to hide seams because of the nature of contact cement on foam. Painting's super easy too when you figure out you can just weather everything and no one bats an eye because dirty and worn battle armor always looks better than clean over all.

and kinda shoujo/magical girlish (I mean cause witches lol)
but her costume design is one that looks simple but is actually a bit more difficult

but super nice design which can demonstrate a lot of sewing skill (If judges at the cons you go to look at that) and she has props too which can be used as an intro to EVA foam

I've also seen a cool Mako performance in a competition where she used like a fiber optic lasso attached to her wand to make it look more magical. Could be a cool one!

I like it quite a bit. Just as a heads up, literally the first scene is him saving a girl from an attempted rape. IMO it's a pretty mild scene compared to darker anime, but it really upset lot of people. The rest of the anime is incredibly fluffy so idk why they decided to set the mood with that. It's just a typical comfy isekai the rest of the show. Not particularly high budget, just isekai junk food (my weakness)
