I have never once seen an attractive person in a cosplay they made themselves. Some alterations done at most. Is making your own cosplay cope for ugly people?

Did you know if you pretend to see girls as actual human beings and start a conversation with them normally with some light flirting they'll usually either agree to a date or let you fuck them depending on sluttiness? The trick is not being a bald ugly coomer who treats girls like sex objects fom the start, a ait until you're fucking to treat her like an object bro.

>You enjoyed LineCon 2022?
It’s surprisingly mid, spent more time at the entertainment hall this year after realizing most of the exhibit hall was mostly third party
>pros for this year’s AX
The security entrance has made going in line less shitty, P&SWG S2 got announced (and yes I’m sitting through 3 shitty panels to see the premiere of the first ep at next year’s Trigger panel) and Solo Leveling anime getting announced
>You quarantining after coming back?
For the most part since I’m Vaxxed but I have a new job lined up next week.
>Damage report.
Spent nearly $175 on food to survive. $476.63 on at the atlus booth merch, ArcSys booth, AX official swag, the Trash Taste Lounge 21 thing and a shiki board for the bois to sign. Would’ve spent more if it weren’t for Nintendo revealing that preorders for the CE of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 are up at DAY 0 of AX.

I had a lot of fun. People seemed pretty open to socializing & the like compared to 2019, but I'm also way skinner & more muscular now so I look a lot better than I did then which I'm sure was a contributing factor
>pros for this year’s AX
Made some solid friends, people seemed to like many of the pictures I took of them, and the lines to actually get in were way better even if inside they sucked.

Nope. Went to the Westin pool deck for a bit Sunday night, but it was dying down by the time I got there so I fucked off pretty quickly

The badge system actually worked and the security placebo made things go faster. The silver lining in lacking content is that I was able to reach out to online people and they were down to meet up instead of the usual, we're all micromanaging every minute.

We’ll, considering that like 1/100 cosplayers makes their own stuff at this point, and most of us are older (not super old but late 20s and up), I’m guessing you prefer 18 year old onlyfans thots or just really young people.
In either case, it’s not a “cope”, but we come from a time where you couldn’t just drop $100 on taobao or Amazon and get a costume. You had to either make it yourself or pay someone to make it for you (questionable eBay options notwithstanding). We tend to cosplay characters we actually like from series we’re actually passionate about because we have to care enough to make it. I think that’s a lot more attractive in a person than just a pretty face who’s wearing a costume they bought because they figured it would get them likes on Instagram.

Super late huge announcements like NIGHTOW being at the Trigun panel, made me unable to go see him due to conflicts. And I'm so sick of non-clearing rooms. It's so stupid. Couldn't get into Mob because everyone sat through some card panel that I know NO ONE who went to Mob cared about after I waited over an hour in line. The only time the crowd REALLY bothered me was at the Fate gathering. Some Normie event was happening and people and their kids kept cutting through and con staff kept yelling at them to keep moving because they kept wanting to stop since we were all taking photos. It was such a mess. I miss when gatherings were inside. Also why can't we use the stairs?!

That said, after 15+ years of this toiling, I'm looking at buying my first cosplay. I haven't lost my passion, but I have to admit I don't have the same sort of energy as I did in college with a full-time job and children to care for now and the best Chinese costumes have gotten much better than those from the mid-00s. That and stuff like Genshit (unfortunately) have so much random-ass designs that it's far easier and cheaper to buy a good premade and modify parts than to attempt from scratch.

I just don't really get those opportunities much anymore, I miss old con room parties where you could naturally just end up talking and flirting with somebody 1 on 1 without every other dude in the room trying to jump in on it.

Yeah you can tell even for high quality ones. It will look professional but too much effort compared to careless machine errors and better options than some of the industrial foil and plastic bits, plus it won't resemble any of the costumes off Taobao. It will have a better fit and complicated or seamless and completely hidden closures and hand-made details like ribbons that premade will use premade on.

It's especially bad with Asian chicks since they barely age between the end of puberty and their mid/late 20s, I had a near miss with one a few years back, she was smoking cigs and talking about cars so I thought she was like 23 or something and then she dropped the 17 bomb.

i noticed those were super popular this year. i was talking to a chick while in line and she started mentioning about the fake boobs she was wearing. they totally looked real but i guess she went the extra step and painted them to match her skintone. it was funny because she was saying how it was annoying how she was spotting all the fake ones because of the drastic skin tone changes where its like their boob window and super light skin while their own skin was much more darker.

Convention center was slightly larger but they didn't use anywhere near as much space as they could have, the amount of (non-attendee) weird fuckers walking through was astronomically greater than previous years, the food options were pretty much entirely sit-down restaurants (and very few of them were impressive), and several other general nitpicks about the local environment like the huge fog cover ruining shots. Not that anon, and I didn't go either, but I've been to other events there. LB is just laid out awkwardly for a con, especially a smaller one like ALA. The hotels are far from one another and the con center, you have to cross major streets to get around, it's flooded with random normies, and it's expensive. I don't love Ontario either, and I really miss the days when ALA could entirely fit into one hotel, but at least everything there is pretty close to everything else and it feels kinda "private," the con center and hotels are set well back from the streets, there aren't many non-con people around, etc., and it also has the advantage of being cheap.

Greetings, I cos'd Ame/Kangel for AX and was pretty high at the con during Day 3. I apologize for the lack of energy and coherence I had towards those I took photos with!
>You enjoyed LineCon 2022?
Yes, it was incredible and well worth blowing my PTO over.
>pros for this year’s AX
Lining up to go inside as well as getting the covid wristband was very easy. Also main attract was that it was a physical event instead of that Anime Expo lite shit.
>You quarantining after coming back?
Yup. To nobody's surprise, I tested positive so now I am working from home for a couple weeks.
>Damage report.
$550 for hotel, I wanna say like $600 on merchandise and food expenses. Overall not bad. Things like cosplay, materials and supplies were spread over the rest of the year so the hit there wasn't much concern.
>favorite cosplays you saw?
I saw an ame/kangel cosplay on Day 3 and I was so happy to see them. I don't think I saw much NSO cosplay overall. Aside from that, there were some pretty good Hololive cosplayers, including Suisei and Korone.
>enjoyed the concerts?
I didn't go to any concerts this year, unfortunately.
>what panels did you went to?
Fakku Q&A, ShindoL, Chainsaw Man, Trigger, Made in Abyss, etc. Mostly premieres.
>went to that AX orgy that obviously doesn’t exist?
No thanks, I only have room for one incredibly contagious disease.
>cons for this year’s AX, say now or forever hold your peace
Lines and the staff who organize them are still a huge mess. It is so easy to line up for an event you think you're going to only to find out it is a line for something else. And staff sometimes let random people cut in front of you.

It's hard for me to imagine many girls deciding to *start* using /cgl/ in this day and age too, both because newer cosplayers are so different from old ones (most prominently not making their own costumes, which means no progress threads etc.) and because 4chan's rep is so bad now that I think only dudes of a certain bent, catty lolitas who want to anonymously talk shit, and those of us who've been here forever and are too stubborn to leave are on here now.

Fanime and CRX are much smaller cons so they don't have to deal with as many people at once. SDCC's artist alley is a lot less attractive to people (not as much fan art, very few things to appeal to weebs with) so it doesn't have that critical mass like AX does. Kentia seems more cramped but that might just be because it feels smaller and has darker colored walls. The ceiling seems lower too, but that might just be the mind playing tricks. Not having as many big name guests or other things to distract people with also meant more people having time to go to the AA. Ironically having the much-faster metal detectors also means more people could get into the convention center.

Yeah, exactly. It was never the most acceptable place but now people think you're a literal nazi if they find out you come here. It sucks because there isn't really a replacement either, cosplay has always been a big ego thing and the anonymity here made it the only place you could talk candidly about it without having everything judged on how famous/attractive/etc. you were. /cgl/ was a godsend for me after my last big breakup, my ex was a famous cosplayer who did some pretty terrible stuff to me and this was the only place I could talk to anybody about it because her orbiters would've ruined my life even more than she did if I'd said anything publicly, and it helped me get through the situation without killing myself, nowadays I'd just be talking to a bunch of retard incels here and it's pretty damn sad.

while she did get a fair amount of pictures taken, she said she hardly got any compliments on her outfit. meanwhile, people that just bought their costume from the same place were getting compliments on how great their cosplay looks.

honestly, kinda felt bad about that. she went through the trouble of making some pieces look 3D rather than the typical drawn on shit you see on store bought costumes.

It really bums me out that the entire craftsmanship element of cosplay is dying out and it's just starting to be about the attractiveness of the cosplayers themselves. The latter was always a factor obviously but it used to be that you had to get both sides right. I guess it's not limited to cosplay either though, you see the same thing happening in mainstream fashion where it's been trending toward simpler and simpler outfits and stuff like athleisure that looks awful on anybody who isn't naturally really attractive, as opposed to a decade or so ago where an average person could do a lot for themselves with fashion choices.

I'd say the big change has been within the cosplay scene itself. Random dudes at cons never cared and just went for the hot chicks but making your own stuff was still the standard within the cosplay community and you'd get recognition from other cosplayers or people with a specific interest in the hobby. Go far enough back and even the randoms had some level of recognition too, since decent pre-made costumes were so rare and even non-cosplayers assumed stuff was handmade and could be impressed when something looked good.

I guess it's just another of the ways cons have gone to shit and lost what they used to be all about.

That's another way cons have changed massively in recent years, though. In my early days ('00s) the percentage of people in costume was much higher, and the majority of those people made at least part of their costumes. They might have been shit, but at least there was some effort involved, and the hobby of costume-making was a big part of the scene. Cosplay was also a great way to meet new people who shared your interests in those days and that's totally gone out the window, now it's mostly just girls who're only there to get photos taken and promote their social media or patreon/onlyfans/whatever, didn't make their shit, and in many cases don't even care about the source material or character they're dressed as.

Yes, anyone can learn to craft stuff. But the fact is that most people are too lazy and unmotivated to do so, which makes it impressive when people do spend the time to hone their skills and learn to make quality costumes.
Being born beautiful is luck, and not impressive at all. Add to that the fact that many “beautiful” people are actually pretty plain, they just photoshop themselves or get plastic surgery. Even if it is all natural, again, it’s not impressive, it’s luck.

People like you who think the only thing that matters is beauty are what have turned the hobby into a soulless fight to get more likes on pictures, rather than a fun way to show that you’re passionate about a series or character. Social media was a mistake.

Being part of a costuming community, having other people recognize and appreciate your handiwork, finding other people who are fans of whatever series you're cosplaying, and so on were big parts of what made it worth putting in the work, and if you're just gonna walk around and be ignored in favor of thots in random lingerie and a wig it feels pretty pointless.

Look, honestly I think old peoples' way of looking at cosplay is actually insane. I wear cosplay of characters because I like the character, and if the person I'm paying a commission can't get all the details on the costume perfect I might alter a few things to get it just the way I like it, but why would I make my own costumes? Calculating the cost of materials, labor, etc. it's way way more efficient for me to just pay someone who is skilled at making costumes money to make my cosplays. It's the same thing as buying clothes for work, why the FUCK would I make my own suits and dress shirts when a tailor can do it way better than I can, has decades of practice and knowledge, and will do it with less waste and in faster time than I would? And in any case I get more attention than the whores wearing underwear since I'm better looking than them, simple as.

>> No.10785383

>>10785380
The simple answer is that, for most of cosplay's history, the hobby was as much (if not more) about making costumes as it was about wearing it. The best analogy I can come up with is that it used to be like being part of a woodworking community where people made and showed off furniture they'd made, or something, and then suddenly it just turned into a thing full of people showing off stuff they'd bought. It's a totally different thing with a different intent.

>> No.10785388

Yeah but think about it, people who make stuff are usually ugly and coping. This is an improvement, just look at pics people took in the wild of random cosplayers even 10 years ago compared to now. Everyone is way better looking on average.

>> No.10785400

>>10785388
That wasn't my experience back in the day. There were plenty of very attractive cosplayers who made their own stuff. I think they just look worse in photos because most were nerds who didn't really know how to do makeup, style wigs, etc. and didn't have all the tutorials that are available now, and because the quality of photography was generally much worse in those days. Nowadays most of them have either quit or they're 35+ so obviously they're not gonna look as good as younger people in their prime.

The real secret is learning to *control* light. A basic DSLR with a kit lens and a couple of remote flashes with umbrellas or softboxes will go way further than a pro body and $3000 glass if you know what you're doing. There's also a major art direction element too, you need to learn how to pick locations and how to direct cosplayers because they're not professional models. (Though these days they're a lot better than they used to be, and incidentally I think that's a big part of why old cosplayers looked so much worse in photos.)

>You can't really control light in a convention tho.
You absolutely can, that's what speedlights, modifiers, and reflectors are for. The art is in learning to work with and augment whatever ambient light you're stuck dealing with, and to avoid taking photos in places where it's too bad. This obviously applies much more to doing organized photoshoots than hall shots, but that's what you should be aiming for if you're serious about cosplay photography anyway, run&gun hall shooting sucks. (Though learning to use a single light for fill flash can improve that heavily too.)

fwiw if you're serious about this stuff, I can't recommend Joe McNally's "The Moment it Clicks" and especially "The Hotshoe Diaries" enough. He's one of the world's best location portrait photographers and they're amazingly useful books where he explains his thought processes, draws diagrams of lighting setups, and everything. I'm retired from cosplay photography now but did some very prominent work back in the day, stuff that went viral, ended up in Japanese books and magazines, etc., and those books were a major resource in getting there.

I think directing is one of the hardest things to learn but once you get it down it makes a world of difference. These days it's not quite as necessary, though, because most of the younger cosplayers have grown up taking selfies their whole lives so they've already got some idea of how to not look stupid in photos.

I’m sure lots of people did get it at AX, but most people I know who went are negative. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with wearing masks, although that’s not fool proof obviously.
There is a rise in cases but I don’t think there’s a rise in hospitalizations/deaths, so while they may bring back mask mandates I don’t think they’ll cancel events. The virus is getting weaker, which is good, because it’s never going away. If it’s not hospitalizing/killing people, it’s essentially a new type of flu and things are more back to normal. Also, if there are concerts and sporting events going on we can’t really blame it on conventions. Any large gathering will spread it a lot.

And in practice it didn't require it anyway. The people checking were the minimum wage convention center event staff told to just hand out wristbands. No one was doing penetratiom testing to see if they were actually checking. Entirely performative.

Given how the AA covid map is not entirely composed of positive covid cases at every table, it shows that even in a shitty, shoulder to shoulder, lacking in ventilation area, where many people were static for long periods of time, and with limited sanitation opportunities, covid can be defeated or held at bay.

On the flipside, vaccine status may have made a difference for a lot of people. I spent most of AX with my brother and our friend, both of whom only got the first two shots last year, and both got quite sick after AX. I had my first booster about a month ago and was completely fine after the con. Might just be luck, might be Pfizer (them) vs Moderna (me), but there was definitely a difference and it's hard not to draw a correlation there.
