MM added new stock a few days ago, including a longer version of arabesque rose. No offwhite besides a headbow, which I was salty about since it's my preferred colourway. Of course all the main pieces sold out immediately anyway. Did any gulls get anything?

I ended up buying a blouse from VM's new lineup, but decided to pass on classical doll since I was hoping for other colours. I have enough black and bordeaux in my wardrobe at the moment and don't like stripes. Hoping that the rococo bouquet pictures on their gallery aren't just a tease, but I am less than hopeful.

Agreed. You can't hide your lack of coordination skills behind a busy print or lots of accessories with dresses like MM. Plus I think itas are just drawn to the loudness of sweet.

Is there a western comm classic lolita FB page??? If not, I wish there was. There's not as many of us out here anyways, and I mostly want it for trading purposes. I'm sick of going to large swap meets and having nobody to trade with. I see way more classics out east.

I've also noticed twice now that even if someone is interested in buying a piece from me, they couldn't fit. Not even a humble brag really, the comms in my area are just large and sweet wearers.

>> No.10779021

>>10778882
I also agree. Sizing and availability absolutely are factors, even more than price. There are plenty of rich itas who buy scalped AP dresses and still look terrible. If someone manages to get an MM dress in this current market they already had to put in a lot of effort to find it and be thin enough to fit into it. Someone said in another thread that a lot of MM coords just look balanced because the wearer's waist fits into it. More of the emphasis is put on tailoring and the overall silhouette, so you can't hide fit issues or poor coordination skills behind giant panels of shirring or a busy print most of the time.
I also think sizing aside, a lot of classic lolitas are more experienced overall. Lots of lolitas either migrate from sweet or gothic to classic, or they have been wearing just classic for a very long time. It isn't really a style that attracts a lot of new lolitas off the bat. Sweet and gothic are more attention grabbing

It's easy to coord, but you can still look bad in a simple coord. Whether that be because of fit issues, being ungroomed, or just not suiting the style. Sometimes things just don't work.

>> No.10779230

>>10779198
Yeah it's very simple but I think what anon means is that if your taste is even slightly off, it's really obvious. There's nothing to distract from shit taste, poor fit, etc — also, everything in classic has to be decent quality because cheap offbrand shit looks really bad against well tailored main pieces.

Not saying you cant use offbrand obvi, but you need to choose well

>> No.10779235

>>10779198
I agree it might be easy, but with simple accessories if the details don't really go together then it will just look disjointed, and since it's a simple coord you can't really draw attention away from it with a print. It's surprising how easy it is to make it look off.

I still have my MM pieces from ~2007-2010, including this dress >>10778840 but with the bow that she's missing. I haven't worn them for a long time and I don't have any occasions to wear them to. Should I just hang onto them and let them sit in storage?

What's the rule of thumb now for reselling something? I remember when I got St. Claire OP, it was around $250 MSRP from the website. MM pieces are not depreciating anytime soon, they either go for retail (if no signs of wear, damage, or missing items) or higher. St. Claire is a bit weird because it’s been floating around often enough that i’ve noticed it varies in price a lot. Colorway at this point probably plays the biggest role

Seraphim has actually produced dresses with William Morris fabric. I personally think it fits here with their verging on true grandma style aesthetic, not something that I would wear personally without some cinching, but interesting nonetheless.

My main fear is that IW will slap the fabric with one of their usual cuts, which didn't do Mucha any favors. Hopefully they put a tiny bit of thought into making a cut and design that matches the fabric well.

ngl but the best oxford heels are going to be slightly worn-in and secondhand, at least in my experience.

I've bought expensive brand new oxfords, but the comfort and ease I've gotten from slightly worn-in oxford heels in my size is amazing.

They tend to run smaller i've noticed, and they don't actually offer top bridge support (top side of your foot and sides?), so it's easy to roll your ankle. I feel like getting them worn-in prevents that.

Best pair I got were from depop

In the past, one rule of thumb I used to follow was ribbon width and bow size. Sweeter brands tend to use wider ribbons and bigger bows. In classic, ribbons tend to be thinner and bows tend to be smaller. Gothic (Moitie) can be a bit of a mixed bag. But that was back in the OTT era, I don't think it really holds true nowadays, especially with current sweet.

Another important point is petticoat shape. Classic dresses and skirts tend to use an A-line (VM, MM) or a hybrid shape (IW, JetJ). Cupcake/Bell-shape is more utilised in other styles. Though this is probably pretty biased because I personally adore the sharp A-line. Maybe I'm under the impression that the cupcake shape was preferred in sweet in the past because some AP dresses had in-built petticoats but I've never dabbled in AP sweet so take that with a grain of salt.

The role that cut plays also cannot be understated. Pic related was a pretty interesting BTB secret. Different brands of different substyles used this uberfabric at one point, so it's a nice way to see how each brand had a different take cut-wise, even when the print was the same.

I suppose IW leans sweet more than the other brands, but I was describing the most ott coord I could remember. If anon can find such a great heel, more power to them. But if they find something "loliable" at Macy's, it's going to lean more academic, so it would be safer to start with that.

It's true that a more formal styling would look off. My classic is a little more down-to-earth. "Academic" sounds about right. Though stripes and sailor collar are a bit more on the joshi kosei angle of academic, whereas I go more librarian-style.

I don't think they would necessarily make an outfit look more 'academic,' nor does it need to be restrained to an extremely stereotypical 'academic coord' in the sense of classic lolita. Everyday classic lolita that isn't ott already sort of looks that way, and shoes that would look grandma in other substyles work pretty well here.

These shoes also work a lot better than tea parties. I couldn't find a picture with the loafers you are thinking of per se but there's nothing about it that would be jarring in a coordinate. Hope you find one that fits soon.

I still don't want them to fold since I still really like a lot of their blouses and other non main pieces. I personally don't mind them making some non lolita pieces and will probably still buy some of them but they can't just stop doing everything that their current customers like about them.

I think it was also discussed upthread but I wish they would bring back the tailored silhouette they are known for. Old VM pieces make my waist look amazing but the last few dresses I have bought from them (2021 releases) made me feel so frumpy I had to alter them. Pic related also looks awful, not because it's not lolita but because the fit is so poor. It doesn't fit or flatter the model at all. Baggy, boxy silhouettes might work in sweet but look so sloppy in classic.

I have a large collection of Fluevogs, but mostly in black, since as another anon mentioned they work better for gothic or 'dark classic' a lot of times. I can post a collage of the ones I own if you'd like for secondhand-hunting but many of them are long sold-out.

They definitely last a long time with proper care and reheeling, though you might run into some difficulties with the custom heel tap shapes if you don't buy extras from the brand in advance.

I'll also note that they take payment plans and are easy to work with calling other stores to have a size shipped if they don't have them in-person. >>10780213 I love this one so much.

>>10780206
Hey anon, when/if you received these can you post about how the fit is? I'm interested as well but have the same concern.

>>10780517
I bought this series on release. It's still my favorite print arrangement of Mucha's art in lolita, but these pieces shipped with super blurry, blown out prints and looked terrible in person. I don't know if this was ever corrected on their part later but I was burned by that first round and it made me never want to buy from them again. The quality was so thin and cheap, too, you can see it on the ruffle and hem seam in the picture.

Same, gulls. I miss the era of VM's pristine tailoring and elegant designs, and IW's flattering cuts and wide availability. New IW is impossible to get even if I had any interest in it, but at 5' I'm swamped in everything they release now and I'm too old to tolerate hot, cheap polyester dresses anymore.

I get that lolitas are getting older across the board- believe me, I hit 30 and my arms have gotten too fat for a lot of my older VM blouses/short sleeve dresses so I stick to their longer sleeves now- but I wish these brands realized that just because we've gotten older that doesn't mean we have to hide our bodies in sack-like dresses!

The shoes have arrived and I've had some time with them. I usually wear 24.0 cm JP/ 38 EU, though my feet are sometimes a little wide for Western shoe brands.

The shoes I received were a little long. I bought some heel grips and tested that. It's a strange situation where the shoe fits without socks, but heel slips happen with socks. It think my heel grips might be the thing that's causing the slip. It's a bummer because I was hoping to wear my lolita socks and tights with the shoes. With thick socks, I also had some discomfort with the tightness of the toe box, but it's leather so that should get better when the shoes are broken in.

Something else to note is that when I used my leather care kit on the shoes, quite a bit of paint rubbed off onto the cloth I was using. I didn't notice any significant change in the shoe's colour, so it's not a big deal, but the amount of staining on the cloth did surprise me. It was a lot more than I was used to with my other leather products. Also, the buttons on the front are quite difficult to open and close without a button hook. It's a good thing opening them is not necessary for putting the shoes on.

Other than all that, it's a beautiful pair of shoes. The silhouette and details are really lovely. Was it worth it? Mmm... The price is a tad too high, in my opinion. The company placed a lot of emphasis on the leather choice and Goodyear welt, but it's kind of lost on people uncultured about leather and shoe construction (myself). If this style of buttoned heeled loafers were more common, I'd be willing to forgo some of the broguing for a lower price. If you're willing to wait for a similar pair on the second hand market, Cobb Hill has one called the Sally, and Lifestride has one called the Origin.

TL;DR final verdict 4/5

I keep thinking about this dress. I like it in theory, but the little fake sleeves that aren't even attached to the dress just kind of look odd. If they wanted to make a dress with an "off shoulder" look then why didn't they just attach the sleeves lmfao

Looking at the dress' stock photos now that it's been released, it's cute, but I really was hoping it would be an Amy Rose rerelease, instead it's just a simple jacquard fabric. It strikes me as odd that the model isn't even wearing a petticoat in the photos though, I wonder why?

Goodyear welt means the shoes can be resoled. It's a good investment to make if you plan on keeping them for a long time, which can happen with shoes as your shoe size doesn't really change after you stop growing

Thanks for the review. I love heel grips for shoes I wear barefoot but yes it's annoying how they're awkward with socks. What color did you get? I wonder about fading with the paint coming off, but sometimes that sort of wear can be part of the aesthetic

Sized up a couple centimeters while maintaining the original silhouette, along with making the yoke a removable piece now. I like these changes, hopefully it also works for the anons who've been waiting for this re-release.

RIP anyone who's been dying for a shorter length release though, maybe the rococo bouquet version of antique rose doll up above will deliver.

I'm trying to find an ivory leather bag. I like these Patricia Nash ones but the nicer designs don't come in ivory. I want to match VM and J et J so their crossbody or a satchel like Cambridge Satchel makes isn't elegant enough. Does anyone have a recommendation? If you don't like the Patricia Nash that's fine but it suits my style so I thought someone else may like it

anybody else think there’s going to be a mini classic boom soon with how many older sweetfags are feeling embarrassed by the current state of their substyle?

>> No.10803609

>>10803606
With the lack of reselling proper classic brands on the market and the difficulty in snagging new releases, any potential resurgence will likely be made up of taobao, indie and handmade.

>> No.10803768

>>10803606
Unless it's a mid 2010s era OTT classic boom or a boom in cheap taobao classic, I sincerely doubt it. True classic probably isn't flashy enough for a lot of sweets.

MM is pretty difficult to get your hands on nowadays and runs smaller than sweet brands do, so that cuts out a lot of people. I can perhaps imagine a small resurgence of VM with all their new releases but I'm still doubtful that most sweetfags who want golden age AP back would be interested in VM or even IW.

>> No.10803791

>>10803606
Like others have said, the supply of classic items on the market is simply too low. Everyone who joins now must be glued to their screens all the time in the hopes of finding a good deal. I feel like this is going to have the opposite effect actually. More people are being drawn away from clasic as most people simply do not have the patience to wait 3-4 years just to build up a basic wardrobe.

>> No.10803802

>>10803609
I have such mixed feelings about this. On the one hand I’d love to see more love for classic, but on the other hand I know they’re going to mess it up. Like discussed upthread you can’t really hide bad fit, poor construction, cheap materials etc. with classic, you can’t distract from bad taste with a flashy print, and you can’t just stick on a wig and falsies and call it a day. I worry that we’ll get a resurgence of stringy-haired Milanoo itas in wrinkled MM replicas but it’s far more likely we’ll get what >>10803768 said, an OTT classic resurgence or cheap, overdesigned Taobao-fied “classic” that misses the mark entirely.
Or both. A few years ago before COVID I already noticed a kind of “OTT classic” trend at big events in my region that looked like cheap medieval/renaissance-inspired historical costume, only lolita in the sense that they were knee-length and that the Taobao shops they came from probably sell lolita too. I like the idea of classic lolita that draws inspiration from underappreciated historical periods but these coords were not it. They looked like the cheap polyester costumes you see pop up when a medieval fantasy or historical series is trending and everyone wants to be a Tudor princess or dragon queen for halloween that year. I really hope this doesn’t become a thing.

>> No.10803819

>>10803802
That historical reenacting trend started in the early 2010s with JetJs painting dresses and IW's grazia crown print. I'm surprised that it's still ongoing. I've noticed that the demand for overall cheaper sources has increased and of course coords tend to look shittier and more costumey as a result. Who even buys $300 retail dresses anymore if it's not a long awaited rerelease or a once in a while splurge? New releases are so few and far between or sold out immediately that the cheaper option becomes more attractive over time.

>> No.10803887

>>10803802
i remember that period too, some of them were also really attracted to rococo (which i feel like the only decent OTT classic is rococo tbf) but the hair was usually soo bad.

but yeah i also have mixed feelings. do i want more classic lolitas to talk to irl and swap clothes with? absolutely. do i want the quality of our substyle to degrade? not all. can't win, but being in our little corner is still nice.

>> No.10803888

Off topic, but has anyone else noticed the influx of MM dresses on LM? I'm so surprised they're not being picked clean. only reason why I haven't bought any is because I just bought a few dresses recently, and the available colorways aren't my thing.

MM is nice but also starts at 400 dollars so it’s a bit of a hard sell. They may be very nice but I could get multiple IW dresses for the price or like a bunch of blouses, shoes, etc. For me it is just hard to bite at that price.

My theory is that the only MMfags are oldfags at this point and they've already built most of their classic wardrobe so they don't jump on every new listed dress, while for new classic lolitas, the barrier of entry with MM dresses at 400$ (and more) per dress is too high for them to justify a brand which they don't really know the quality of.
