I might have waited until right now to buy a badge because since i didn't know if i'd actually be going. Is there anyone here who cancelled who'd be willing to sell their badge? If it not how plausible is it to bad tickets for three days (one is sold out) and then just sneak in?

Do you think there was a lower attendance cap or are 100k+ people actually going to show up to this thing?

Real Answer: The 4-day badges probably had a lower cutoff than usual and Saturday was just organically filled up. The other one-day passes are still available and if it's a matter of overcrowding, they probably wouldn't be selling any more badges period.

My Personal Theory: They do these cutoffs a week or so before the con because they run a twofold effect of both causing FOMO for the other less-popular days and so they can alleviate pressure on their systems by having a lot of preparatory information locked-in and easily accessed, which also helps them gauge how large of a populace they will be dealing with each day without wild potential fluctuation. Though this is still the AX administration, who have historically been a room full of monkeys who cannot navigate an event to save their own lives, so none of that would even matter.

I'm excited.

So what panels are actually worth going to? is there somewhere i can read about them in more detail then on AX's shitty app? Also where can i find out about cosplay meet ups? Is /cgl/ Doing a meetup? sorry this is my first time doing this.

anyone staying at Westin? I wasn't able to get JW Mariott like I usually do, so decided to try a different hotel for the first time. How is it? From the pictures it seems kind of old looking

I’m staying there, and I’ve stayed there twice before. It’s not as nice as the JW, but about equal to the Courtyard Marriott minus the distance. It is older but that doesn’t bother me.
Granted, I just use it as a place to stay and don’t party or anything. But I have friends who have gone down to the pool deck to hang out and party and they had a good time.
The worst part is the distance from the con, although it’s probably the best as far as hotels you don’t want to walk to. It’s possible to walk, it’s about a mile. Just not something I’d usually want to do but I’m lazy and I cosplay. It’s a quick ride on the shuttle, much better than Little Tokyo or the Sheraton, but those are the only ones I have experience with.

if youre only going on saturday, i recommend just trying to get there as early as possible. im driving from orange county so i plan on at least being parked at the convention center by 7am. im going day 0 to pick up my vax badge early so that wont be a problem.
they better have a shit ton of staff to give out covid badges. though something tells me they are going to fuck it up and only have like 2 people checking.

It'll be pretty hard to sneak in without assistance. They've been locking all outer doors for the last couple of years. Your best bet is if you have two friends with valid badges for Saturday who can shuttle you inside by having both get inside, one stays inside, the other tags that friend's badge out when exiting, gives you that badge to get you inside, and then purposefully has his badge have an error and then has it reset since he has proper ID. Your badge will also look like a non Saturday/4 day badge so it'd look obviously out of place too. If you have a friend photocopy his proper badge that'll work for cursory at a distance glances

ok, so I've been to EVO where we had a couple of days before the expo started to look around the booths, but freebies ranged from ramen to tshirts (enough to fill a string bag). Considering the volume of people, within a day I should carry a duffle bag? I have one small enough to fit within the camera bag/purse, and I feel like it would be more secure than being a guy with a $2000 payday around his neck.

There is honestly not that much free swag at AX. If there is, it usually requires a stamp rally or similar (aka you have to work to get it), or it’s given out at panels. The easiest I can remember off the top of my head was stuff where you had to download an app/mobage but it’s not like SDCC where there are booths all over giving out free swag.
Also none of it is worth $2000, and if you mean your camera, just keep it in your bag until you’re in the con center and pay attention. It’s pretty crowded so it’s not like people can get away fast easily. I can see being pickpocketed maybe if they’re really skilled, but no one’s going to try to steal a DSLR in the con center.

There’s really not that much free swag at AX in my experience, you may get bonus items with certain purchases but actual free handouts are mostly things like postcards, small posters, and can badges. It works at ALA because ALA is (or rather used to be) a relatively social con where you'd basically use the ribbons to gush about fandom shit with randoms and play games when there was little else to do. AX is an extremely dense industry con where things move just a little too fast, there is nowhere to actually sit down and just mess around, and the vastness of the AX population means tons of people will ask for one with zero interest as to what the ribbons are or what they are from. It can really only work at medium-scale cons where you get enough traffic to guarantee people will actually want your ribbons, but not so much that it winds up overwhelming.

Lots of pilots were getting close to retirement age before covid. When covid hit a lot of pilots took early retirement because air traffic ground to a halt. Then when they started vaxx mandates more pilots decided to quit as well. Now that people are flying again there are not enough pilots.

Also they changed flying time requirements from 250 hours to 1500 hours before you can even get your Air Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP). So what might take you a couple of months if you put in around 4 hours a day will take you at a minimum 6 months, and that is if you have your own plane. If you are flying as an employee then it could take you well over a year. So that is making it where it is harder for pilots to become airline pilots.

It wasn't just covid, there was already a huge pilot shortage before it. The real issue was that for decades the airline industry was dominated by ex-military pilots, particularly 'Nam vets, and it was nearly impossible and a complete nightmare for civilian pilots to break into the industry (years of flying for shit regional airlines at literal poverty wages and terrible, sometimes even unsafe, working conditions) so few bothered trying, and at the same time the military started training less pilots and retaining the ones it had a lot longer, and when all those cold war pilots hit mandatory retirement age (65) there was nobody available to replace them.

Covid definitely fucked shit up a lot worse, though, and aside from early retirements another big issue is that it shut down a ton of the programs training new pilots, especially college ones in states that had mandatory suspensions of in-person classes. I was in one myself and if covid hadn't happened I'd already have my commercial license and would be instructing or flying part 135 by now, but instead I'm not even done with my PPL and I'm scrambling to find an alternative route to licensing because I can't afford to waste another 2.5 years (full length of the program) before I can start making money.

I am working as staff there, and this is already the case. So many staff members dropped out, and we are literally calling up high schoolers/fresh from college people to handle this. We are in for a fucking nightmare.

One of the best anime conventions is Animefest in Dallas. It isn't huge but any of the profits from the convention go back into the convention. Instead of having to pay to get a signature from a guest that came from Japan you can just wait in line and get one.
