10770258 No.10770258 [Reply] [Original]

Hot Take: Cosplay contests have nothing to do with a contest of cosplay. It's just a contest of who the judges think is the best seamstress, which is why women tend to win most of the time. Cosplay contests are wrongly judged and biased to all hell. Nothing actually has the actual cosplay get judged itself, no matter how clever or in-character it is. Pic related for instance will never win a cosplay contest because he didn't sew his jacket or some other bs.

OP why is your forehead so swelled? Do you have that water head disorder?

>> No.10770331

Most cosplay contests at anime conventions are craftmanship based. It has nothing to do with being the best seamstress. It's about the best use of techniques and materials. I've seen plenty of armor builds win best in show. If you want a contest that judges based on 'being in character' pick a comic con. They love that shit.

>> No.10770347

What would be the criteria for winning a cosplay competition if it wasn't based around handmade OP? What sort of skill is there in buying the parts for your costume? If you take away the skill in handmade do you realize it mainly just becomes who is the cutest girl or who has the most amount if money to buy the nicest costume.

>OP why is your forehead so swelled?
Side effect of his mental powers, which he used to mind control the judges.

>> No.10770366

>>10770347
Maybe judges should be invested in actually being into anime at an anime convention. That's the criteria. I dont care if the judges have a bias of their favorite animes or seasonal anime. it's still better than the current system.

armorers have the same problem, too. it's just focused on the materials of construction. I just used seamstress skill as an example because it's the most proponent cosplay victory conditions. Ive seen way too many unrelated costumes or ocs win contests simply cause they sewed something together. And they usually beat out foam wearers.

there's been complaints before that prop and foam work is severely underappreciated with judges since they tend to mostly get seamstress judges who don't know anything about foamwork or propwork

Why is it wrong for cosplay competition to not give a heavy weight on the attractiveness/accuracy of the person's physical features?

It's not a "crafting" competition. You shouldn't be anywhere close to winning anything if you're fat/unattractive no matter how much time and effort or how big the cosplay is.

You have no idea how many times Ive seen a fat girl in a frilly dress just randomly win best in show.

Must be the chick version of "fat guy in space marine automatically wins".

At least in that case all you really need is to be tall and bulky. Even if it's a really cheesy way to win.

ugly people shouldnt cosplay period. If they plan on doing it for fun it’s w/e but don’t expect to win a contest. Everyone knows that ugly people that win only win out of pity which is embarrassing. And yes being fat makes you ugly

>> No.10770465

Fat people are ugly but cosplay contest has nothing to do with beauty. It should be about pure craftsmanship and talent.

There should also be separate first place for male and female contest winners.

This is to remove any biases you get from coomer pedophile men or female judges who give crazy points to their fujoshi crush(or boyfriend).

Trannies get put in the bracket according to what sex organ they're born with.

Cosplaying is my afition.I don't fucking care what they think about it. Their "opinions" are toxic, anyway.
If you want to win a contest", go suck some judge off.
To reiterate: you all are a bunch of casuals, starting with OP and continuing with >>10770323. Think less about what "judges" will think of your cosplay and think more of what YOU think of it.

>> No.10770572

>>10770538
Pretty much. The judging isn't objective like in sports where the winner is the one who ran the fastest or scored the most points. The winner is the one they find most likable, which has nothing to do with cosplay. Cosplay is about dressing up, but many times the bitches who show the most skin win. You might complain about horny men and you'd be right. But the panels are mixed to female, and I've legit seen many female judges who supported skimpy outfits as empowering or condemned crossplaying girls because "you shouldn't hide that you are a woman".
Why support the competition with your participation? Whether you think you'd win or not. It's better to go around and woo the people instead.

>> No.10770578

>>10770366
I would actually suggest judges not to be huge fans of the media because the bias they can have when judging.
Long history of craftsmanship should be the olny criteria to be a judge. And I agree with the op that some contests judges are only heavily based on sewing skills so having balanced judges where all different crafts can shine would be optimal.

Only at non anime conventions. Covered women more than not win contests. I've been to contests all over the country. At Anime expo, the left was Best in Show for example.

Cosplay never was about just craftsmanship. It was about being as much of the character as possible. This notion that you have to be a great crafter to be considered good cosplay is just a certain set of people attempting to redefine the merit of cosplay through their insecurities. At first I disagreed with the anon who said it should be a beauty contest but Im starting to warm up to the idea the more I realize how the west strongly favors craft cause most of the people in the con community do not take care of themselves physically.

>> No.10770627

>>10770625
And the right was Audience's choice. Goes to show how separate the judges are from everyone else's subjective view. Happens at every con, too. The guy who got cheered the loudest at a recent con ended up not winning anything while a girl in a random cosplay no one knew won cause she had elaborate tailoring.

>> No.10770631

>>10770627
a cosplay CRAFTSMANSHIP contest is based on craftsmanship. if we went by "who gets cheered the loudest" retarded meme costumes would win every time, shit like a poorly made ugandan knuckles, an inflatable amogus, or the godawful done to death "trash can waifu man" .

>>10770258
the only thing I will concede is that I think women have a lot more leeway with fancy/elaborate costumes (where it's a lot easier to flex elaborate finishes, emboridery, pattern styling, etc), because men's "fancy" costumes basically max out at a three piece suit while women have suits, dresses, and a massive gamut of fancy wear. It's pretty even aside from that. this is speaking as a guy btw

this thread is retarded for conflating a "cosplay contest" (whatever the fuck that means, how do you even grade that?) with a "cosplay craftsmanship contest". If you're talking about who's the most in character, just do a skit in the masquerade, which is judged separately from craftsmanship.

What's wrong with that? What's wrong with people judging based on what they liked the most? It's a cosplay contest, not a craft contest. It shouldn't have ever been to begin with until certain egotistical personalities took over. This isn't a coincidence. I also do not know why cosplay contests don't have character presentations. Just a short moment where they can act like their character. I know Japanese cosplay contests do this.
