I don't make armor, but I do use many a pattern for sewing and the basics are the same. I've noticed that some people thrive on patterns while others do better when making their own patterns. I have no clue what the factor determines whether you're that Type A or B kind of person. Just remember that you don't have to stick to a pattern faithfully if you do use one. You can forgo the instructions or change the pieces, or change the order in which you make them. Whatever works best for you and delivers the best outcome. I'd say try a free one first and see how you feel about it. There's loads on the big creators' websites to chose from.

Are there any guides to aging yourself for cosplay? Was wondering whether the pic related transformation was possible as a diy or whether it would require hours and somebody's help.

I'm a pretty masculine looking guy planning on cosplaying as a prettyboy/bishounen male character. It seems hard to find any directly relevant makeup guides beyond how to get the basics down. Should I just watch those, get a basic makeup kit from Sephora or wherever, then just specifically address what changes I want to make from there & learn as I go?

Not the worst idea, just make sure you're actually getting all the basics with it. Maybe consider using drugstore makeup if it's just for practice, sephora can be super expensive. Also, some ftm crossplay makeup tutorials can be pretty useful too. Kinda similar to a question earlier in this thread but I want to get into crossplay while I'm still cute but I don't really know anything about makeup. The FAQ has a makeup guide but it's a bit sparce. Is there any sort of progression I should follow as I learn (i.e. first learn to do X, then Y which is a bit more advanced, then Z which is more advanced than Y) or would it be best to just look up tutorials and follow along to my best ability until I can do something that looks halfway decent? Speaking as someone is has only just gotten half-decent at makeup, it's more of a progression of overall skill rather than specific skills. Like if I'm shit at blending eyeshadow, I'm probably also gonna be shit at blending out my concealer. Once I get better at blending, both of those areas will improve if that makes sense.

What helped me improve was just repeated practice and picking products that were worth my money, not just the cheapest I could find. Not saying you have to use department store stuff only. I still solely use drugstore makeup. I just make more informed decisions now using reviews from several sources.

My guess would be to use a backpack rig underneath the costume to anchor the heavy weight down -- kind of like how retractable wings are made. Then you would use bendable wire or pvc pipe for the musculature, paying extra attention to the section for your arm. Then you would create the shape with foam, prime, seal, paint, and do some arm workouts to be able to hold the whole thing up for pictures, lol.

Most of us on here make our costumes. I try to keep under $80-100 for the entire ensemble including materials and accessories (such as eyelashes, wig, shoes, foundational garments, jewelry, makeup, etc.); however, if I were buying one, I would expect to pay that much just for the base outfit and then some for all of the accessories. Most premade costumes I've seen go for about $80+. It depends on the costume though of course. Ballgowns, intricate designs, and full armor builds will always cost more.

I see. Then you're going to need a combination of things to help. Try to reduce your body temperature by leaning towards costumes with natural linens or less coverage on your body. Carry a fan and towel with you to dab away the sweat, especially on your forehead. Drink ice water, etc. If you can ask your doc for prescription deodorant, you could smear that on your forehead like you mentioned. If not, I hear OTC aluminum free ones help too. Before you apply the spirit gum, use baby powder (and possibly a mattifying primer) to really ensure your skin is dry. Other than that, you're doomed to reapply frequently unless you can find a movie strength adhesive. I'm sorry.

Yeah, one issue is that a lot of the cosplays are long-sleeves with jackets. I'll talk to my doc about the sweating, since I actually received pills in the past, but didn't take them because it might have interfered with some other meds. Didn't know they had clinical strength deorderant, though.

This is gonna sound silly, but I see tons of people wait in line outside of a convention in simple clothes (tank top and shorts) with a full face of makeup and a bare wig cap on. Since the convention I frequent is in the middle of the hottest weekend of July and the line to get in tends to be 1-3 hours depending on competence of staff, it makes sense. Then they just get dressed once they make it inside. Better than standing in such terrible heat sweating through your costume.

I was surprised when I heard it too. My cousin mentioned it in passing. It was tied to some other skin conditions she had like eczema which might've pushed her closer for the criteria to get prescribed. I wish I could give you more info, but I do wish you luck! The ren faire community and sufferers of hyperhidrosis tend to have really good tips on staying cool.

Actually you were more vague. The time taken to build an armor project from a pattern has a larger set of variables to account for than the price of a costume on the market. Even the anon's personal budget isn't necessarily helpful data because a personal budget for a cosplay is subjective to the individual and their preferences among other factors. If you had asked how long a specific armor pattern takes to make or even a type of pattern (ie a breast plate, simple shield, full armor etc.) takes, then you would've been more specific than the other anon.

If you're looking for data though, you'd have an easier time collecting it by running a poll than asking for replies. You'll only get 2-3 replies at most on here.

This may be useless advice, but it's really rare to find any SFX that lasts a REALLY long time. Granted, I take very long showers and I haven't done crazier stuff like full-body dye (I've heard horror stories from people who did or knew someone who did Homestuck cosplay) and I hear that takes A) really long to remove and B) can clog up drains

But unless it's some kind of freak accident, even regular water washes away spirit gum (eventually)

never used insulation foam for cosplay purposes but have for table top gaming which is how i came across this video.

has anyone used foam clay before? ive seen a few tutorials on how its used and they always seem to stick foamclay onto EVA foam with just water.

Bias tape would work well. It's already flattened. I would suggest double sided since sew the inside down then the outside so all you have is a since stitch line

Sort of. It's foam so I rubber cemented it on two locations near the front. I assumed the connection at the midpoint of the ankle was going to hold, but it instead fucked itself and didn't stick. It's a foam covering of a shoe to look like a leather boot and it mostly manages. Then it doesn't. I'm trying to figure out how to connect the two halves, front and back, and keep them on the shoe and not fall apart at the sides of the shoe. I may need to post a picture.

If you use a pattern online, it's pretty simple to sew. It's actually applied similarly to bias tape (in the traditional application, not the way you're gonna be using it for the stripes).
It goes like this:

>line up right sides of collar exterior edge to bodice exterior edge along the neckline

I'm trying to find the right hoodie for Shyarly from One Piece. It's a pretty casual and last minute thing but would anons have a link for something similar? The differences between the blue-purple of her hoodie and the dark blue of her tail are subtle but very apparent

Adding to >>10770359, don't buy Ben Nye or Wolfe gray unless you buy white too. They are both extremely dark grey and won't look good. Snazaroo and Vibe are lighter gray and don't need mixing. If you're using a cream based paint setting spray works better than powder, if you're using a liquid like Vibe go with a mix of both spray and powder for the most even results.

Be aware of how your visibility and mobility is limited. When trying it on at home it's easy to overestimate how easily you can navigate because you're very familiar with the layout of the place. Beyond just checking for immediate fit keep it on for five minutes or so, walk around and try to do little tasks (sitting, picking things up, etc) to get a sense of how the armor may affect things.
Do you have 'tunnel vision' where you have to look directly at something? Can you look down, for navigating curbs/stairs/escalators? So I have a small fairly complex eva foam prop that I want to assemble and paint. It's black and white. Ideally I would prep and spray paint all the individual components separately but I need to use latex caulk to smooth out some seams so I'm forced (I think) to assemble the thing first. Usually the fabric your costume is made of makes all the difference in how cool it'll be. Make your innermost layers moisture-wicking natural fabrics like cotton, etc. If you can add vents/split seams then that'd be helpful too. When making a sword (or generally any kind of flat surface, how do I make it actually flat?

What I did here was layering eva foam with an aluminium rod in the middle to make a katana base. When I try to dremel the edge, the surface is never flat and looks rather uneven and ugly. I tried fixing it with sandpaper by hand but it didn't seem to help much.

Maybe belt sander might be able to help me? It feels like it's nearly impossible to get it smooth by dremelling it by hand.

problem with using a dremel for something like that is that youre doing small sections at a time so if you end up shaving off a little too much on one part, its going to look off.

Are there any good California/West Coast cons with a similar vibe and theme to Dragoncon? I'm kinda over anime cons and I've got some western media stuff I'd like to cosplay, and I'd love something that has a good social atmosphere for a 30+ guy like me, the way I've always heard Dragoncon does.

I dont know how dragoncon is but usually the major non anime cons in california are Wondercon, San Diego ComicCon, LA Comic Con.

Dragoncon is more of a general nerd con without a specific focus on comics, anime, or whatever, and it's an old-school con with a big emphasis on being a social thing and a big party rather than a place for shopping, industry panels and premieres, etc. (Though it has some of those too.)
I considered SDCC but it's not really an option, no way I could get a badge or hotel room at this point. Wondercon already happened this year and LA Comic Con is, afaik, pretty heavily comic-focused, plus it's less of a social con and it's way at the end of the year. I was kinda hoping for something this summer or early fall but I guess that's probably not gonna happen given the other major cons around the country at that time.

Make the boot cover, then contact cement the EVA foam claws to the boot cover. Lastly, use foam clay to build the "hood" for the claws (a spot of contact cement should help there too). Or check out whatever furries do.

after painting EVA foam, whats a good way to seal everything without it cracking through minor stress?

How dumb of an idea would it be to get an animegao kigurimi mask for a cosplay if you're already, you know, a woman? I want to cosplay Madotsuki and she's only ever seen with her eyes closed, and I think I'd really enjoy not having to put on makeup for a cosplay for once, being able to just pop on the mask and go. Is this a completely retarded idea?

I don't think sanding is necessarily the issue, it looks more like the pressure was off when you airbrushed. I'm not good at airbrushing, but I think too much pressure is what leads to that effect on the surface? There's a little bit of "orange peel" and a little bit of lumpy flecks.

Listen here buttboy, this character is based loosely on IJN uniforms of WWII. So the cap has a irl counterpart but good luck finding a clean reproduction outside of Japanese site so the hatmaking is a good idea.

The garment bags are the best for keeping all accessories and wigs for a single costume, but if you use pieces from costumes interchangeably then boxes is your best bet. The only thing you can really do after that is have a proper labeling system.

It's essentially a belt. It's just a long tube of fabric that's had its ends finished and woven through the belt buckle. Super easy project. A youtube video would definitely help.

Acrylic works if you water it down and make a little go a long way, but it's better for highlights/streaks rather than fully recoloring.

I have several of these and find them super useful as they can hold wigs and accessories, though like other anons have mentioned it's not the best fit if you reuse parts across multiple cosplays.
They make ones with four pockets too, which I find most useful for the amount of accessories most of my cosplays have.

Finally was able to make a SINGLE visor for a protogen. I burned myself twice and fucked up like 5 plates of plastic.

And even the one I got here has ribs and is thin as shit. Idk if using thicker plates of plastic will help

Im cosplaying an alien from a video game and I'm painting the face. Any tips for making it more lifelike? I already shaded it but I was thinking of using a wash. Right now the acrylic looks very flat

Vinyl cutters like Cricut or Silhouette can cut fabric. Other than that, your options are to do it by hand using a hot knife or something.

It is, in this case i'm using a full white tail i previously had. Is boiling Immersion the proper way to dye in this case? Idk if dye can work with brushes or so

Is armor cosplay where the helmet is empty a thing or just a really dumb idea?

I often see helmets being made big to fit a person's head in (with padding), which messes up the proportions of the armor.
Eye level for the person wearing the suit would be at the neck
