It's that time of year, Anime Boston is right around the corner, time to accelerate the cosplays!
What are you planning on dressing up as?
Are you excited for anything?

>> No.10755276

Finally an AB thread. Happy they rolled o lver last couple years tickets. Curious to see what kind of restrictions they pull. I grabbed a room pretty early at the con itself. Ill be cosplaying a daemon prince of slannesh and maybe nightwing for after parties.

>> No.10755301

Actually seething that I somehow thought this was cancelled again this year and didn't buy tickets until today. Hotels are all gone or $500-$600 a night, so I'm debating even going.

haven't been to aboston in a couple years now, excited to return since I've got just about nothing else planned until otakon. rooms were a total fucking nightmare to get and everything not in the block is expensive as fuck (too expensive), and the hotel I got is downtown. wack.

Yeah... heheh. We'll see.
Whatever happens happens.

>Any locals know of good hot pot close by?
Liuyishou, Hot Pot Buffet, Kaze Shabu Shabu and Happy Lamb Hot Pot; all in Chinatown.

It's quite a walk from the Hynes/Pru area, I suggest taking an Uber or riding the T on the Green Line to Park Street via D Line. They're all within a 5-10 minute walk from Park Street Station.

Hope that helps!

Is there even still time to get the booster and still be admitted? I thought you needed to have the last shot at least a couple weeks beforehand, because it takes a while to kick in or something. I guess we’re still three weeks out, so it’s close, but there’s time.

A buddy I was gonna go with dropped out on me yesterday because he just found out he needed the booster (he understandably thought being vaccinated the first time was enough), and he can’t take any time off work in the next couple weeks to deal with the side effects.

I guess people who are completely unvaxxed and are looking into getting in this late are just fucked. I wonder if a bunch of unvaccinated people are gonna show up anyway and get turned away.

>> No.10758864

>>10758862
>he just found out he needed the booster
Do you have a source on that? The Anime Boston website doesn't mention a booster, it just says that you need to be what the CDC considers "fully vaccinated." The CDC's website doesn't have a definition for that anymore as far as I can tell, but the Massachusetts Department of Health says that "Fully vaccinated" doesn't include the booster:

https://www.mass.gov/info-details/covid-19-booster-frequently-asked-questions

>> No.10758903

>>10758862
I asked them and they said you dont need the boost

>> No.10759207

>>10758862
You'd have to be a fucking retard if you got vaxxed so you can go to AB. That's it? After all this pressure over time, that's what convinced you? BAKA.
The con staff need to get over themselves, they aren't everyone's doctor and it's ridiculous to have this requirement given the state of the world regarding covid. I figure they're either completely neurotic freaks or being absolutely forced to by the venue (apparently this is not the case, as per their own two more recently updated policies: https://www.massconvention.com/community/community-novel-covid-19 ). So what gives? Our group canceled our plans to go over this.

>> No.10759219

>>10758864
>>10758903
I thought I’d heard it somewhere like a month ago, I think from something I read on the CDC website, but it turns out I was wrong. My friend double checked by emailing the staff, and you guys are right, they say you don’t need the booster.

>> No.10759317

Isn't three weeks enough time to get both shots?

>> No.10759320

By this time haven't people figured out you can fake the cards so fucking easily? Do you honestly thing they will be sitting there, scrutinizing every single vax card? You get a lanyard for your badge, slide the paper in. After the first 100 or so people, door guys not going to give a fuck. Whats he going to do, call your doctor and say "hey is this legit?". Your going to get waved through like everyone elde with a fake con badge the last 20 years.

>> No.10759406

>>10759320
I mean, you're not wrong, but at the same time you look silly since you clearly didn't read the policy all the way through.

The vax card only needs to be presented upon badge pickup. Once they look at it, they'll put some sort of sticker on your badge. Although you're only spending 2-4 minutes once you reach staff after waiting in line, they're still going to be able to scrutinize it more. My personal feeling is also that there will be plenty of staff members who are super anal about believing in the vax will be trying to be hardos about scrutinizing the cards. Doesn't mean some fake ones won't slip by, because I'm sure some will, but yeah.

>> No.10759410

>>10759406
Meanwhile, everyone goes around indoor restaurants/public transportation/etc within and around the Prudential Center where there is no vaccine mandate and nobody cares when they re-enter the convention center without quarantining for 2 (more) weeks. The policy makes no sense. So if there are AB staff ITT, I'd say would-be convention goers deserve an explanation beyond something like "wE'Re sAvInG LiVeS". You very clearly aren't. You're just fucking with people because you can.

>> No.10759412

>>10759410
>You very clearly aren't. You're just fucking with people because you can.
This is literally every convention owner outside of Florida, ColossalCon's or Anime Matsuri's. We have now reached the point where there are millions passing through airports and planes every single day, either with no mask or surrounded by someone who isn't bothering. The jig is up and they have no excuse anymore. They barely did to begin with

No, they'd be rejected and turned away.

I've worked autograph lines and it's crazy that people don't listen at all. We'd be announcing "NO FAN ART, no non-related items, no unofficial merchandise will be SIGNED" every 5 minutes and there would still be idiots who pull out their fan art purchase at the front of the line and then get offended and panicked when told they can't proceed. "B-But I just bought it from the artist alley!" is not a valid excuse.

>> No.10761890

Would people be able to give fanart to a guest then? Not to sign, but as a gift from an artist, etc. I know food gifts are prohibited

>> No.10762045

>>10761890
My 2 cents in all of this all depends on the guest. It's usually the guests agent that's calling the shots and telling people no to shit. But I've had a few instances (actual at anime boston) where the agent would out down a sign with the cost and he just hit it off the table and did it for free. Also a time were it was a small room and he just told everyone to come in and talked for a while, his agent seething.

>> No.10762060

>>10761890
Depends on the guest or the agency. In my experience, American guests tend to be open to anything goes, while Japanese guests are tightly controlled by their agencies, so their staff members would stop unacceptable items before they even make it out. Sometimes though the guest might see it and gesture it's okay and they make one-time exceptions, but I wouldn't count on it.

Yeah, I could make a fake card like anyone else but they need to see some serious losses for this BS or they'll never stop. Why the fuck should people have to get an experimental drug with real potential side effects to go to a con? They better start making sure people have their flu shots too since omg you could get sick if you're hanging out with tons of people. What ever happened to assumed risk? First time I've ever missed AB, but they'll have to have their vaccine circle jerk without me.

>> No.10762548

Honestly other then a few autographs, people are going to be hanging out in groups, chilling outside the con in the mall, going to after parties, bar hopping, having a good time while simultaneouslynot having masks on. The tickets were free from being rolled over the last two years. I'm stocking up the booze and food for room parties anyway with our own karaoke machine. So people can cry if they want, but ill still make lemonade and I've lost nothing. The absolute worst case scenario is some extreme try hard volunteer staffer will ask you to cover your face, leave, and you remove the mask 10 seconds later.

The mask policy is one thing, but the only people who would really care are people afraid of getting yelled at. It's a totally pointless measure that fucks with the execution of many cosplays, but as >>10762548 mentioned people largely won't respect it anyway. It will enable the staff to be busybodies on a whim and to their hearts' content. You don't even need one on a damn airplane in this country! I guess the staff believes that they know better?
But either way the mandatory vaccine policy is, at this point in time, even further beyond the scope of what's acceptable both nationwide and locally for such an event - especially considering recent developments about the BA2 variant being even more mild than the BA1. Leave it to modern Massachusetts residents to take pride in leading the way in remaining selectively ignorant to reality in favor of idealism and not batting an eye toward excessive authoritarian policies from recreational event organizers of all places (except at places like Fenway park, "As of March 5, 2022 there are no vaccine or mask mandates in effect at JetBlue Park or Fenway Park.") Why is an anime convention trying to lead us all backwards on this?

So you're fine to go to a sports venue, where people funnel through the interior of the stadium drinking and hindering their immune system. You're even fine to, during the con, go to every other establishment in the area where the unquestionably blighted unvaccinated lurk. But if you want to attend Anime Boston, then don't forget to share your medical paperwork at the door.

On a side note, what does their silence on why the policy is set in stone mean? That shouldn't be hard for them to answer. So far they refuse to comment further than saying it won't be changing. I wonder what their problem is and why they can't respect people's private medical decisions when it's clear that your covid vaccination status makes no difference toward other people's safety, just your own (for better or worse).

>> No.10762642

>>10762403
It's not about the policy on masks, it's about the consistency. They didn't even have a comprehensive plan for the cosplay competitions and masquerade to take into account the mandate until they were pressed about it. Nobody was on page, nobody had an understanding of the general mandate. They all finally got together and decided that the ONE exception to the mandate is when you are ALONE on stage performing, without others around you. The Lip Sync battle does not require masks on during performances. The masquerade in some circumstances (highlighted above) does not require masks on during performances, as well as the idol showcase as far as I'm concerned. However for some UNGODLY reason the KARAOKE CONTEST requires masks on at all times. It just reads like staff doesn't fucking communicate and it's frustrating.

This isn't even taking into account the retardation that >>10762575 mentioned. Masks aren't required at the Prudential Center or either of the hotels connected to the convention space. There's no mandate in the city of Boston, there hasn't been FOR MONTHS. All this COVID policy is is showboating and damage control for the inevitable COVID breakout that'll happen at the con. They KNOW people are going to get COVID, the only thing they care about is covering their own asses by saying "oh, we had a STRICT mask mandate and vaccination policy!" once some hamplanet inevitably croaks a la PAX.

I sort of know this feel, though I'm 33 so my youth *literally* slipped away as well. I went to PAX with my friends last month and even though it was heavily scaled-down I was surprised by how much it turns out I missed the crowds, the noise, the costumes, all that con shit. Being around people who are celebrating what they're into always gets me more excited about my own hobbies. I think you should go if you live nearby, I'm probably going for a day even though I have no weeb friends to go with. Worst case scenario is that I get bored after a couple of hours and walk home.

except that Boston has nothing to do with the vaccine/mask requirement toward this event. but you're afraid to protest in Boston of all places? not caring to is one thing. but do you not realize the historical background of the state of Massachusetts? have you never actually read the first amendment? i'm guessing that at the same time, you had no problem with people tearing up newbury street (right next to the hynes) during the rioting in the not-too-distant past over rights that they already had. that kind of mindset truly is the type that results in the forfeiture of power out of cowardice and it disgusts me.
>>10765828
it's either be deceitful (no), be a sellout with your medical choices for an anime convention (no), or party outside the event the entire time (maybe). while the latter doesn't sound like the worst way to spend a long weekend -depending on your company - you're accepting getting cucked out of your local community anime con by control freaks (see pic rel, the convention chair) that do not respect your ability to decide aspects of your own healthcare for yourself. they're the type that would jump at the chance to help the government enforce lockdowns that exist as austerity measures (rather than anything related to public health) for a pat on the head by other paranoid circle jerkers.
>>10765594
you'd probably have some time to spare while you're kept out orbiting the place if you go but can't get in.

Also worth noting, down Hemenway St there's a Vivi Tea (which also serves some food along with bubbletea) and a Kung Fu Tea a bit further down. There are also a couple of asian restaurants around there, but I haven't been to them. I can't think of anything near Copley but if you get yourself on the Red Line you'll have some good shit to check out:

Amataras near South Station is an excellent ramen place but they aren't open on weekends, so this is just an option if you're coming into town on Thursday. Santouka Ramen near Harvard is pretty good and has a big selection, but will probably be crowded as fuck. If you go out to Porter you'll get the really good shit: Cafe Mami has great curry and donburi, Yume ga Arukara has godlike udon but you will wait in line for a long time, and Ittoku has a little bit of everything including okonomiyaki. It's the only place I've found nearby that that even serves okonomiyaki and it's pretty good. Check hours because because the places in Porter close kind of early.

>> No.10766199

>>10766128
Like the other anons are saying, Santouka is the big place to go but the one on Newbury is crowded as fuck no matter when you go, better to take the Red Line into Cambridge for their bigger location.
There are some fancy places along Newbury, but I don't remember their names...always pass by them but never go in. They're probably pricy, for one, and it's mostly "asian-fusion" type places and mostly noodles at that. Yamato II was a decent sushi buffet if it's still open, but it is a buffet, so be careful with what you get. There's another fancier sushi place, can't recall the name of it, but it's a short walk from the Pru and it's great; might be too fancy for cosplay and cons though. Avoid Wagamama like the plague, unless you want the plague (food poisoning and office worker stares).
Chinatown is full of bubble tea shops, if you're looking for one of those; I have friends that swear by Tea-Do, but I haven't been there since the coof started so who knows if they're still open. Other than that, you pretty much have your pick of brands if you can get on the T out there. Don't try to walk, especially in cosplay; it's always farther than it really seems, and with the Kung Fu Tea down by Symphony Hall, it's not worth it.
Good luck anon, and godspeed. As for me, I'll be raiding the nearby Shaw's.

The Arnold Arboretum is pretty and at this time of year, might even still have some of the spring blossoms. For food, Allston is pretty much like a mini-China/K-town; hop on the B line all the way to Harvard Ave, and there are nearly dozens of restaurants, bubble tea shops, and bakeries to check out. It would also be far enough away from the Hynes if you want to grab food away from the crowds (given you have a nice chunk of time for your mea; - transit does take a bit.) I have some insight to the inner workings of the con as I've been involved with AB for a while but I wont say more then as I don't want to out myself. Neurotic is a bit of an understatement with a lot of the people at the top. The issue is like a lot people the last few years they have gotten hyper political to the point that I've overheard them fantasizing about executing everyone who doesn't share their political ideology. It's a shame as prior to 2016 they were all really happy and rational people but I guess we can't have nice things. Luckily due to people not refunding their tickets from 2020 our finances have a bit of a buffer but this year is going to be rough. We are really understaffed due to the covid policy and how this has been handled has sown a lot of ill will with the attendees. I doubt this will kill AB but it is going to hurt it. Anyway thank you for reading my blog I just wanted to get this off my chest as I don't dare bring it up with anyone at the con and this is probably my last year because it's getting too political for something that should just be a fun yearly getaway.

at first i thought these posts were satirical/trolling but i think you cretins might be serious. are you kidding me? are you people so retarded that you think there was a fascist movement gaining steam at anime boston before? it's incredibly ironic that you would think that while the administration of the con was taking pages from the brownshirts' book, forcing people out of the event over what boils down to politics. your pandering to the "black struggle" is a very strong example of your own racism and perceived racial superiority.
>They're a business, of course anyone who's not retarded or overtly racist will give lip service to BLM.
what business failed because they didn't give lip service to BLM? fuck BLM, they are an opportunist political group that manipulates people by tugging on their heart strings. you want to talk about lip service? that's all BLM has achieved for the people they claim to represent. it's a big grift. name some non-superficial achievements of BLM that have helped black people - the largest ones i can think of are marches that accomplished nothing meaningful, a bunch of ugly ass art in urban spaces, and some renamed infrastructure. major corporations and idiots support them for various reasons, but largely because they know people dumb enough to support the group will spend $$$ more frivolously if they believe they are making a difference. stop using black people and race to push your neobolshevism garbage-tier ideals on everybody. after years of attending in cosplay, i'm thinking this con is dead to me. who the hell wants to be responsible for funding people that hate our society so much?

to further top it off, if you consider that whites are the most vaccinated group in the state you can argue that the mandate for this event was a way to decrease racial diversity at the convention (which it certainly did).

I don’t really know how these things work either, so maybe there’s a reason they can’t do this, but: Couldn’t they just move some of the artists from the artist alley into the under utilized slots in the dealer’s room, and then use the space to expand the aisles between booths in the artist alley? The artist alley is always crowded as fuck and in addition to the artist alley being in a smaller space, the aisles are always so much narrower than those in the dealer’s room.

The only other cons in the Boston area I've been to are Fanexpo and PAX East. PAX East is one to keep an eye on, it's usually huge with a lot of stuff to do but this year it was very scaled down. I always have a good time there with my friends so I highly recommend it. I wouldn't call it a huge cosplay event, there are way more cosplayers at AB. Fanexpo has always been underwhelming to me, it's basically a huge dealer's room and the panels are mostly for new, mainstream stuff like TV shows and movies.

This past weekend was the first time I went to AB and the first time iv ever cosplayed. It was a nice con as cons go, but cosplaying in one is like a dream. I felt like a whole new person, and to boot people are WAY more friendly if your dressed up. I had so much fun and meet a quite a few people. Even a guy who mentioned 4chan, which i thought odd at first (wasnt this place supposed to be a secret club). Im a bit sad no one recognized who I cosplayed as, but I was told it looked good so im satisfied. Learned how to sow by hand, spent ungodly amounts of money on outfit, travel and hotels and feel far more confident with making new friends. I went specifically for the hololive panel so I lurked /vt/ for con updates, but then I remembered this board and found this thread after the fact. Next year and maybe even for some upcoming NE cons, im def going to be a part of these threads. Hopefully I can even meet up with other anons and share that dream like experience I drove away with on sunday.
