It's not like they added a new award to recognize black cosplay, or that they exclude everyone who isn't black from participating. I get it's an extreme for the sake of argument but they're not entitled to be given a bunch of resources outside of their basic needs (which disabled peeps in the USA rarely get anyway) for a hobby just because you see disabled people as so lowly and infantilized that it's inspirational porn when they do something that a non-disabled person could easily do. DESU this whole concept is weird. Why make a con that caters specifically to one race? They want to claim that anyone can come to the con and compete, but they can’t win? Just close it off to other races like they clearly want to then.
I feel like this is going to backfire, I’m really tired of every black cosplayer who throws on a wrinkled taobao cosplay and unstyled wig complainng about not getting enough attention because of muh racism. Even though anyone without a big following and who isn’t a skinny young girl doesn’t get much attention. I can only think of one black cosplayer off the top of my head who actually makes their costumes/wigs well and that’s Vickie Bane. Feel free to drop the handles of others but I never see any.

To be fair though, that girl was encouraged to enter the contest by her black friend she was attending with. She didn’t even think she would win anything, but not a lot of people entered with handmade cosplays and hers ended up being the only good quality one so she basically won by default. Honestly felt bad for her for all the backlash she got, but her friend who encouraged her and the judges who picked her didn’t get shit on.

The whole thing is kind of ridiculous anyway. The con shouldn’t pretend to be welcoming of all races when they truly want it to be a black only space. I don’t even have an issue with them wanting it to be a black only space, I just think they should say it outright otherwise you set people up for failure like that girl from last year

The unlikely part was that some random ESL disabled nonblack minority person would even attend Blerdcon and happen to win first place in a cosplay contest there. Why would they be at a black con? How would they attend and know how to buy tickets if all the communication is in English? That's the part that is unlikely, that they'd even be present or compete at all given the circumstances that were laid out.

And the con isn't black only it's celebrating black culture, but it's weird to go and try to win something that cost money from this con designed to support one group when you're not in that group, which accepting a prize for a cosplay contest like the black cosplay of the year prize listed kind of is.

Even the white woman who won last time was pushed to participate when she didn't plan to which further proves most white people wouldn't even WANT to go there for the purpose of competing in a cosplay contest, they'd want to attend just to be with their friends who went. But people ree over the possible exclusion because they think they're getting one over on black people with the "but why can't I say white power" shit when even in the fantasy land where a white pride con existed most nonwhite people would be smart enough to to try to jump in and win a supppsed white only cosplay contest.

Plus the argument that it isn't inclusive is a lie. Inclusive means everyone can participate not that everyone can or will win. And Black cosplayer of the year just can't be a non black person based on the title, AND people already said that there is no official confirmation that Black cosplayer of the year is the same as the cosplay contest winner.

Yes and people with disabilities hate it when you think that way of us because we can do a lot of stuff other people can just fine. Disabilities don't mean we're not capable of basic tasks like sewing and crafting. We're not the heads in jars from Futurama ffs we do still have some of our limbs or organs. And not every disability is visible from the outside too so you can't even tell some of us are disabled.

It's just seen as dehumanizing because saying it's more impressive of a disabled person to accomplish something considering our disability implies you expected less of us to begin with.

The problem is they didn't handle it right
They created a special, opt-in prize for black cosplayers to elevate them to the level of guest status. That's fine, good even.

Gutting a regular contest to do it, denying good prizes to a lot of people because you're paranoid about racists throwing another fit like they did last year when a non-black person won, that's objectively bad.
Also, don't presume someone who has a different opinion than you doesn't care about the same things you do. Opinions are formed from information weighted by experience.
Someone who's lived a very different life than you might have very different ideas than you on how to fix the same things you want fixed.

How do people feel about asian cosplayers?

People always attack black cosplayers for failing to be good representations of the character being cosplayed due to their wildly different skin colour. Okay. But what about Asians?
I've always felt that Asians have wildly different facial features to the characters they're cosplaying (unless it's a child being cosplayed by an Asian woman. They do the neoteny thing pretty well), but I always tolerated Asian cosplay because Asians are the ones that make Anime anyway, so they have to be respected.
If not for that though, with respect to character-accuracy, Asian cosplay isn't that good either in my opinion.

Most black cosplayers can never be bothered with most stuff. Even when they are given advice. I do praise any of them that manage to put the entire suit together. It's still hard however to take a black sailor moon seriously. It's not her fault. Just the color scheme is important in cosplay. But again she and others shouldn't care what I think. But the fact that they chose a shitty simple Cardcaptor cosplay last year over the more well made suits of armor that entered is hilarious. I've seen good and bad Asian cosplays, quality being pretty much like western side of things. The good is very, very good and liberally post-processed, the mediocre is common and a lot of people buy their cosplays as well. The most noticeable difference to me is that their bad cosplays, as common it is, generally isn't as "creatively" bad as westerners'. Like, I sometimes see white people's cosplay and really have to stare and figure out what they're cosplaying and what mental illness or tik tok trend brought them to this interpretation, whereas bad Asian cosplay is more like a careless closet or poor cosplay.
Also the Asian population skews toward being skinnier and fat people don't self-post as often. I don't see as many fat cosplayers putting themselves out there unless that's the point of the cosplay.

It wouldn't have even been hard to add an award like this to the event that required an interview and was based on the cosplayer's ability to be sociable and a good guest but no, had to lump it in as first prize so now unless you are black you cannot win the highest craftsmanship award.

Whole thing reeks of someone who doesn't actually understand what makes a good guest. Just because someone can be an excellent craftsman doesn't automatically qualify them to represent a convention, be a good cosplay judge, host panels, bring in a crowd ect. What other events signed up to default invite the winner without knowing who they are? Jesus.
