I feel like the height of hime lolita popularity was good for other styles in the way that it seemed to influence them all a little bit and made lolitas of all styles actually think about their hair and makeup more. I’ve noticed this weird trend of people putting absolutely no effort into either a lot more lately without being labelled as ita and it strikes me as very strange.
I suppose it’s the rise of oldschool doing this but even then, oldschool lolitas wore makeup a lot more than what seems to get posted in the oldschool threads. I wish people tried to be more polished and actually paid attention to these types of details more these days.

There was a definite influence of the gyaru fashion on lolita fashion at the time, since the former was quite popular. It was embraced as a newer fashion movement, because its philosophical roots were similar, and at the time it was seen to be quite contemporary.

It's easy to see how the two fashions could blend together; but there IS a precise line drawn between what's lolita and what's hime-gyaru. It's not easy to see it now, I think, because gyaru today - if any exist? - have quite a different style.

It was cute nostalgia. Thanks anon for the thread before it was derailed a bit there. I remember being a little puzzled at the style at the time, but was really impressed when I did it IRL, and I did quite frequently, because it was popular.
