10745351 No.10745351 [Reply] [Original]

I have been making costumes since i was a teenager and I still have some of my first costumes, or at least their parts. I'm debating throwing away one, despite the sentimentality, due to the size (a SH1 nurse with the lumpy growth on the back). But i just can't do it quite yet. Meanwhile Heather from SH3 has been around just as long and i never plan on getting rid of it. How do you decide which ones to keep and how long? When do you decide to toss a costume? What do you do with them?

>When do you decide to toss a costume?
When I realize that the simply wash and basic upkeep is no longer worth the hassle vs. that of a new outfit.
>What do you do with them?
Scrap what I can from it, and move it to the new cosplay.

>> No.10745467

The only cosplay I've ever scraped was a Minecraft steve cardboard monster. It wasn't bad, but it was taking too much space. The rest I have them all neatly packed and stored in my bedroom.

How many can you even fit in one room?

>> No.10746770

When I no longer look at it and feel happiness, I scrap it without regret.
I don't make them for others, I make them for me.
I usually move on from them when I no longer feel the same way I used to about the source material.

> How do you decide which ones to keep and how long?
Sentimentality for the character or series, craftsmanship, or the memories I made while wearing it. It can stay in my closet as long as I have space.

>When do you decide to toss a costume?
When the sentimentality wears off or it's beyond repair (dirty, stained, destroyed).

>What do you do with them?
Depends on my attachment to the costume or the quality of it towards the end of its life. If it's in good condition, I try to sell it or donate it. If the repairs are worth the effort, I might do that in order to get it to sell/donation condition. If they aren't, I try to harvest as many usable materials from it as I can. I'm not the type of person to keep every shred of fabric (mostly because of limited space), but wigs, buttons, zips, elastic, and etc. are worth the effort. I saw one costume maker create a wall display to memorialize all of the costumes she'd made in her long career. She kept a fabric square from each costume and turned it into a patchwork and framed it. I think hers was honeycomb shaped, but all i could find to demonstrate it was pic related. Idk I thought that was pretty neat and I'm a highly sentimental bitch so.

That's adorable and really run. I sort of want to try that, now.

I don't throw anything away, but I've still retired my first costume. Aside from it being unbearably heavy for such a hot climate, no one even recognizes it anymore so there's not point. It's just gonna stay in my closet forever as a memento.

I keep it for sentimental value, especially because it's thrifted and handmade.

>everything else
KonMari them. If there's still a practical use or if has amazing memories, then I keep it. Easiest way to judge is picture the costume gone and see if you get hit by waves of regret or not.

Back when I was a teenager in the friggin '80s I made a quite accurate Alien costume, which I kept and finally gave to my daugter to wear in 2019... so I'd say the answer would be "a very long time"

Pre-Senketsu Ryuko. I'm sad to say that Kill la Kill cosplay is going the way of Gurren Lagann. Literally no one does it anymore. I saw a KLK cosplay that wasn't Ryuko, Satsuki or Mako last week, Mikisugi, but that was the first one in God knows how long. Can't even remember before that.

>tfw have been wanting to cosplay pic related since Kill la Kill came out
I mean, I'm still going to do it (even just bought a body suit pattern to try out). I'm not cosfamous and I want to do it because I like the design, so I'm okay if I don't instantly get recognized.

Totally get you wanting to toss it after you've worn it and don't feel like wearing again though. If space it tight, it makes more sense to keep an iconic cosplay you're proud of as opposed to something that has already come and gone.

You would have liked SakuraCon then, as it had the only Nonon cosplayer I've seen in years. There's still some occasional Ryuko's and Satsuki's around elsewhere but not much else. Nudist Beach stuff is 100% dead too.

I recently (last year) just fixed up my very first cosplay from 2010 and other than fixing some poorly made accessories wore the same outfit and wig. So I'll say forever unless it's a character I don't vibe with anymore.

Unfortunately we are just cultured people anon. Like OP says, the con scene is swathed with people who only watch the most popular anime or FOTM's. They don't care for the classics.

Anon, it came out nearly a decade ago. Whether you like it or not, it is considered a classic by the newer gen of fans. To us, we'd classify something like early or pre-2000's as classics, but the goal posts are moving.

You have no reason to put a huge "I am a superfitial goldfish that keeps thinking things from 9 years ago are old as fuck even after passing the age of 12" sign over your face. Seriously, Anon. Seriously. Don't. You are far better than that. I know because your other posts ITT are coherent and intelligent. Do yourself a favor and change that part of you that is not so good- you'll thank me in the future, maybe in 9 years or so.

I know, I know. Giving actual good advice goes against board culture. I should be spewing toxic insults at you instead. Not my style - deal with it.
