asked in the stupid questions thread sorta, but i now realize it was the wrong thread.

what would you recommend for a Sailor Moon SuperS Mugen Academy hotaru uniform cosplay? many shops have the same images which is kind of concerning. is there any shops that have actual nice quality cosplay uniforms or is it better to just look into commissioning something? i don't know where to start with that however

A good thing to keep in mind is anything from an overseas cosplay storefront is ultimately going to be "costume" quality. Maybe not "Party City Halloween shiny polyester" but it'll be a step down from even fast fashion and not something comparable to a "real" uniform. If you want "actually nice" then you should look to commission; it will be much more expensive but you'll get what you pay for in terms of quality and custom-fit.
If you do decide to go the Chinese-cosplay-warehouse approach, be aware of:
Red flags
>No images of actual product, just screencaps/promo pics of character
>Photos from different angles show different garments
>"model" shots are ripped-off pictures from a cosplayer wearing their own outfit, not than the one being sold
>All reviews are generic 5-stars that read slightly off, like spam or machine translation
Green flags
>Trustworthy reviews, ebay or Amazon are harder to fake than a third-party site. Consider reading reviews for their other products to get a sense of their general quality.
>Reviews with customer-uploaded photos
>search social media sites (esp. Twitter) for the seller's brand, cosplayers will often state where they got their costume from in a post.

What sort of material are Sweet JP's shoulder pads supposed to be? To my eyes it looks like the bands are a separate material from the (presumably metal) spikes... a different shade of leather? Heavy-duty fabric padding, like Mad Max's shoulder pad? Just all metal?
Looking through cosplay and fanart it seems like most people interpret it as either metal or the same material as the jacket...

They’re expensive because they’re handmade and therefore take time; hence commissions. It is possible you can pick and choose your own fabric. This is gonna sound kind of cringe, but what makes a good video tutorial for cosplay? I've always wanted to dip my toes into making something for youtube and a contest happened to fall into my lap that's putting the fire under my ass to finally get started. Whether I win or lose, I wanna make a good product. Problem is, I tend to overthink and ramble on. So, I want to hear from you, /cgl/. What hallmarks do you look for in a good video tutorial (ideally for cosplay, but any sewing/crafting technique or content creation advice is fine)?

>> No.10735164

>>10735163
Go look up other cosplay video tutorials and make notes of what looks good in theirs, like lighting, camera angle(s), audio. Does the creator talk and talk forever plugging other things before the actual tutorial? Do they list every single item or skip what seems "obvious" or only mention steps in passing? Is there fast-forwarding through tedious parts? Does the creator cover variations or troubleshooting points? Do what you think looks good.
I personally prefer the ones that have no frills, no random talk about anything but the tutorial on hand (like, "Today we're making X, here are all of the materials you need for X, and here is step one"), and I don't have audio on my computer, so I have to work with tutorials that translate well silently or can be captioned automatically by YouTube.

Cosplay is something you've ultimately you gotta do for yourself rather than likes or "you really look like them!" external approval. A character you like will help you sustain your interest and enthusiasm, especially if it's an early project. Is it okay to ask for fabric recommendations here? It'll be my second project ever so choosing the right fabrics is still pretty tricky for me. It's mainly the top I'm struggling with,

You’ll want to go with linen or a natural muslin (the nice kind, not the cheap stuff for mock-ups) if you want that natural feel. Even a lightweight canvas would be too heavy for this project.

>> No.10736577

>>10736434
If you're a beginner in sewing/dyeing, I recommend splitting the garment into a kimono top + skirt. Buy blue fabric for the top and light gray-blue fabric for the skirt, then dip-dye the skirt fabric to match the top. If gradient dyeing is too difficult, you can always consider custom-printing it.

Linen or a natural fiber fabric with a bit of texture come to mind but if you can't find a color match, mediumweight cotton should be okay.

I have a wig that is doing this, is there a way to fix that?

Its fine and looks like a decent version of the characters hair on a wig stand but the minute someone puts it on it does the wig equivalent of swimming shorts when you jump in a pool and they are full of air, just poof.

>> No.10736664

>>10736663
Most wigs if not glued down solid with products will poof up when you put it on, it's completely normal. Some gentle brushing and patting will straighten out the fibers and get them to lie flat again, then spritz one more time with hair spray to get the fibers to stay down.
Or are you talking about the wig hairline being super high? That's up to you to adjust the wig forward.

May not work out best for Lucoa but I've had success in the past with using a light touch of acrylic paint to add or enhance wig colors. Based on these tutorials:
https://youtu.be/o4J6atPmrq0?t=342
https://youtu.be/Ol5rkHZuZ5I?t=624

Because you're *coating* the wig fibers you need to be careful to use a light touch (a little goes a long way, don't worry) and be sure to work it through with a brush (paint or hair) and try watering it down. Again not sure how well this will work with a gradient-hair character like Lucoa but neon paints like picrel are really vibrant and help with that pop.

Unless you have a specific passion for it or can't acquire what you need online, then nah just buy it. There's so many decent quality costumes out there. You should have no difficulty finding a school uniform set -- especially in that generic color. Just search youtube for "where to buy cosplay" and take a look at what's offered. If possible, you should try to find a wig that's prestyled, again unless you plan on learning how to style on yourself. That character's hair style isn't too hard, but it can feel pretty daunting to get right as a beginner.

>>10738084
Oh, I thought you were strictly talking about Saber's armor. Yes, it's because both. A huge multi-layered gown and multi-layered detailed armor are both not beginner friendly to make. An important thing to remember about cosplay is that you don't have to do it all yourself. You could totally buy the dress and make the armor (once you're at skill level) or vice versa. You could do the same with this other character. For example, I'd suggest buying the hard parts like the coat, button down and pants, but you could probably make the shirt and/or belt. That would be a good division of labor and projects at beginner level.

If it's your first cosplay, don't expect accuracy. You can probably get basic trenchcoat + jacket set and mod parts, but it's going to be baggy.
Kino is wearing a double-breasted jacket/blazer that does not have visible buttons and matching pants that seem very formfitting. You're looking at either regular slacks or finding a stretchy knit pair. Her overcoat has the weird anime design of being simultaneously billowy but also extremely formfitting from the torso up, You're not going to find this commercially available.

Also she has her signature hat and goggles and double guns, don't forget them. Kino is easy to thrift together but hard to portrait accurately. Good luck.

Punished Props is alright, but if you want to learn practical DIY stuff I would suggest ;

https://www.youtube.com/c/YOGACosplay
https://www.youtube.com/user/gyakuyoga

The issue with Kamui, Punished, and most of the American Prop makers is that they assume you have either real shop tools or a 3D Printer minimal. But here's a Japanese man that does stuff that you can mostly improvise.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5AqN5Bt8YvqrZzQM2ySlYA

Here's another channel too, but specializes on cardboard. Only reason I'm posting this is, if you get a decent idea of how foam works, you can take cardboard patterns and translate them with foam too.

Anyways I would still keep a practical deadline about stuff.

Friend dragged me to one a while ago which was okish (though the drag sailor moon performance was fucking terrible jesus christ), I mostly just played Red Dead 2 the whole time.

Felt intimidated by all the skimpily clad girls and felt underdressed. How appreciated/unappreciated would dressing as one of the Sneed guys go over? Seems simple enough, dunno how many people would get the reference or think I'm some weird 4chan guy for doing it.

You are correct. I mean, you might get a stray compliment here or there, but it sounds like you're overestimating how much attention you would get with a simple costume.

One thing I've found with niche outfits is that the 90% of people who don't get it is offset by that 10% being MUCH more enthusiastic when they recognize the cosplay, so there's that.
But keep in mind "overalls and a red trucker cap" is not a very distinctive costume once you take away the Simpsons artstyle (unless you want to paint yourself yellow). Like, if this guy wasn't holding a propane tank or standing next to Dale would you recognize that he's cosplaying Hank? Maybe if you roped in a buddy so you'd have both Sneeds, but even still.

You mention feeling "underdressed" - many of my cosplayer friends will spend at least a day of a con just in street clothes, so don't feel like you "need" to cosplay at a show.
I have seen a fair amount of meme-y cosplays (CIA, etc) -- but if you're concerned about looking like a "weird 4chan guy" what kind of dudes do you think are going to recognize your costume and talk to you about it?

I'm planning on doing my first cosplay creation and chose Kamen Rider Sasword. It's a little complicated looking, but I'm foolhardy and have money to spare on more supplies and plenty of time if I fuck up.

The only think I'm having trouble with is how to do the eye visors. While I'd like to get those long oblong shapes under the eyes, I was going to use a mesh pattern for ease, unless someone has a template for those. What about the green plastic? Which plastic works best? If it's clear, what dye or vinyl wrap works well for this stuff? Thanks in advance.

I assume the heat is causing it to set in some sort of way that tangles things up instead of straightening it. Or it might be because static electricity is causing it to bunch up in weird ways.

I plan on using them for a fantasy larp so they'd need to withstand some fighting.
What material should I use? I'm thinking something stiff but not too heavy and it would be great if I'd have that shine. I plan on printing the pattern on the fabric and have some wiring in the top so that they fall the right way. Just buying them would be fine too for me.

The pictures on the top look like they're made out of fabric to me. I'd imagine it's layers of fabric sandwhiched like a corset: fashion/outer fabric, interlining/structure, and lining (or I guess another layer of outer fabric since it's visible from the opposite side). I'd imagine that the major veins are actually boning channels and the minor veins are topstitching with a thick thread like yarn or embroidery floss. I'm not fantastic with fabrics, but if I had to take a guess, you might be able to do glitter tulle or mesh over a layer of blue satin or blue cotton sateen for the fashion fabrics and muslin or duck canvas or other sturdy fabrics like that for the interlining.

All of the ones I've seen (including the one you linked), only fold the seam over (instead of sewing the inside at an angle), which makes it look less "crisp". Like for example https://clippedcurves.wordpress.com/2014/03/13/lined-vent-sew-along-mitered-hem/amp/ is an example of what I mean.

Yes, it's completely possible to make bias tape corners that are cut and sewn instead of folded over. This is actually how I did my mitered corners for a few years before I realized that the folding over method is less bulky and less likely to end in disaster.

I'd recommend trawling thrift/consignment stores or resale sites. Harry has some city miles on him so lived-in clothes will get you a good start. Vaguely 70s fashions have the big collars, flared trousers, and the like that he wears in the appropriate colors. Picrel is a more realistic rendering from the artist who did the Thought Cabinet art which makes a better reference than the more painterly style of the rest of the game.

Just google "black and white baseball cap" - if you can't find one with a white bill then spend an extra five bucks on white fabric paint and recolor it yourself.
Similarly googling "misaka mikoto heart shirt" will immediately find where to buy her shirt. Don't overthink such a simple outfit - jeans and a t-shirt shouldn't make you "a bit lost".

Looking to cosplay Walder from gbf without breaking the bank. Creating his outfit from scratch is out of the question, but I don't know where to start since all his stuff is both basic enough to realistically exist already, but also unique/old fashioned enough to be hard to find or be expensive. It's a simple costume but idk how to get the parts to put it together. (Baggy brown shirt and pants, dark green link-esque tunic, tall boots, fingerless long gloves, the ragged cape, dark green bandana.)

>> No.10740907

>>10740874
I think your best bet would be to alter premade clothing. You could grab a bedsheet or linen for the cloak, brown long sleeve pants and shirt for the under clothing, an oversized cotton t-shirt for the tunic, and some scrap cotton for the headscarf. I'd say eliminate the props since they'll suck your funds, but you could potentially use thrifted old leather bags for the belts or just foam since you'll have to make the shin guards anyway. If you can find the boots thrifted or secondhand, that'd be cost effective, but if not stalk some sites for coupons. Other than that, weathering, distressing, and possibly tea-dying will be what makes this costume.

Thank you all so much for the good ideas! It's indeed a lot better to opt for a metallic fabric with something in between instead of doing it with one layer of fabric. It will look much better that way.
The croc-skin metallic fabric is a great idea too, I didnt even notice that. Then I can do the thickest veins by stitching them and I wont need to print anything.

Zentai suits like the other anon said or colored tights and arm socks. I prefer arm socks because they're thinner and more breathable than zentai suits, but the latter tends to be more opaque. Some zentai suits can be bulky around the fingers tho which isn't a problem with arm socks. You can even add fake nails to arm socks to make them look more realistic. It's up to personal preference.

As for your face, you'll want to use good facepaint like Ben Nye, Snazaroo, etc. Use eyeshadow to contour your face, then seal your paint with a combo of setting powder and setting spray. The combo is important to be long lasting and not smear on others.

Trying to cosplay a greybeard. I have been looking through many of the robe patterns listed in the sticky and elsewhere. However, none seem to match something at least close to what I am trying to do.
I do not intend to go cheap on materials. Will work to get multiple layers of black/grey wool to make the robe functional in a cold environment.
The main issue is trying to figure out how many layers are on the robe. It doesn't seem very clear at first. Hood, shoulders, and V in the center chest seem to be one piece. Overcoat robe beneath that which has the dragon amulet in the center. Undercoat robe beneath that shown at the bottom center and probably accounts for the strings at the hands. Each piece, especially shown on the hood, appears bulky so that it looks doubled up.

Any suggestions?

Is this what you're envisioning? Yeah I'm not surprised that you didn't find a readymade pattern for this, but those patterns listed would be great starting blocks for the drafting you're gonna have to do. Personally, I don't see the sense in keeping these layers separate for final wear. If it helps you breakdown the construction great, but that means it'll shift when you walk and add tons of weight for each layer of the wool you add. I'd say just make it appear layered, but that's my preference. If you have a boner for accuracy then jack it, my friend.

As for the "bulky doubled up" pieces, I think it's possibly one of the following:
>piping
>decorative satin stitching
>fabric appliques which have been secured and defined with a satin stitch
>all the above and decorative silver thread
>"faux layers". In other words those pieces are like free flowing flaps on the blue coat, but they are separate pieces of fabric which have been laid on top of each other and stitched down to give the appearance of layers (kind of like how you can buy a sweater with a fake collar and cuffs so it can look layered).

>> No.10743336

>>10743329
You’ll probably have to Frankenstein some patterns together and do some trial and error for the robes. I recommend finding thick material like table cloth on the cheap to draft them out without cutting into the good stuff. As far as how many layers I think you have it right at three. For the bulk issue, beyond just the base pattern on the two outer robes there are a lot of appliqués and detailing that will bulk it up. With the amount of appliqués that cross over each other, I don’t see it being an issue to get the thickness you see, but keep in mind you want it to remain comfortable and not so heavy that it’s cumbersome.

Rear view of the robe. The scaled pattern can totally be faux. I think in game it is supposed to be a soft leather or something, that's kindof what it looks like.

>>10743335
That coloring outlines what I was thinking before but now that you mention each layer shifting I think it would probably be better to at least keep the red and blue together. Green can just be an extra robe beneath. Thank you for helping me break down the robe a bit more.

>>10743336
The issue is finding a pattern to begin with. Looking into "monk" patterns currently isn't getting many results. Obviously this would be a new pattern all together but getting moderately close is what I was looking for. Jedi brown robes might help me here, the issue is how this seems to be connected. Like you are supposed to put it over your whole body (hoodie) vs putting it on on like a jacket. The seem is totally going down the middle but that break at the bottom confuses me. Thank you for suggesting table cloth first before I spend too much haha, I wasn't thinking of that.

Some info for the FAQ based on recent projects:
>Foam
Recently Used some of Michael's cosplay foam. Noticeably higher quality and better to work with (cutting, heating, etc) than their regular craft foam sheets. Comes in 2'x5' rolls (so you have to flatten it out) in 2/4/6/8/10/12mm thickness, off-white color for ease of marking and painting.
Like the FAQ says you are "paying the craft tax" but I had a coupon and didn't want to pay/wait for shipping with other options. Solid middle-of-the-road choice.
>Buying secondhand
For wigs and costumes both I can recommend Lumikha Cosplay Resale. There's both "bought this wig and never used it" and "styled and wore a couple times" sort of listings, but sellers are generally good with photos and reasonable with prices. Haven't had any issues with timeliness as a seller or buyer.

Okay you're flipping between saying wig-styling and wig-making and it's confusing me.
If you're asking whether it's possible to style a base wig into 9S's haircut as an absolute beginner then yes. You probably won't need more than 1 spare wig to test on. If you do enough research you'll be fine.

If you're asking whether it's possible for an absolute beginner to make a wig from scratch (ie sewing down wefts of hair onto a cap) and then styling it, you're bound to create a terrible first product. You'll definitely need lots more practice if that's your aim. And as I said in my last reply, 9S's style is so simple and widely available that it really doesn't make sense to do so.

It looks like 3 parts bound together with (felt/leather? probably leather), but I'm stuck on how to set it up. My first thought was, since I'm using wire and foil for an armature, to make 2 grooves in the main shaft of the Arm while I'm still in that stage and set the horns and side bone into each notch, then do all the wrapping once I (obviously) get the rest done (Worbla, sand/paint, etc.) Does this sound halfway feasible? Paper mache might be ok in the short term but if you plan to wear it more than once or twice, foam or plastic covered with fabric. You just have to heat up the foam so the open “cells” close up and then you can spray the surface with spray adhesive and smooth the fabric over top. You can use vinyl fabric or thin, stretchy pleater to get a shiny, plasticky look.

Hey so I have a general heat transfer vinyl question.
I'm going to use HTV for as much of pic related as I can. I have the material worked out I'm not using a morph suit.
I only have a hand iron. How screwed am I?
Slowly cutting and forming complex patterns isn't an issue but any experience/advice would be a big help.

Oh anon!
I know you worked out the eye shape but for the under mesh I'd use a plastic chicken wire that matches the overall shape then silver reflective craft paper under that on the underside facing outward.
Just cut yourself eyeholes and you should be all set.

Any advice for doing metal parts? I'm struggling to figure out the metal buckle parts of the skirt. I can bend a rod into shape for the buckle loops themselves, but the part that attaches them to the skirt looks like a door hinge and I have no idea how to go about making that. Hm, I see. You can try peeling the puffy paint, but it's probably going to leave stains behind. I'll be honest, there is nothing you can do that will make this not look like shit. The jacket you chose was not a good base. Jason is wearing probably some more akin to a brown leather jacket. At best, you can finish the arm seams either by doing a double folded hem, bias tape, or facings. The bat symbol should be taken off, sanded to remove the print lines, filled, primed, and re-painted. Some definition on the outline wouldn't hurt either. The lines on the jacket are created by seam lines, not something topical so anything but that is going to look strange. Angling and hemming the bottom is going to look strange because it's going to give the pockets and bottom hem a weird shape. It'd just be easier to start from scratch with a new jacket -- try thrifting one.

Anon, I fear you're misunderstanding. You will need to redo the curls. You asked if fabric softener would ruin the curl of a wig. I answered no, because the wig will still retain a curl pattern but the wash itself (with or without fabric softener) will cause the curls to droop , loosen, and get tangled. After brushing it's going to become wavy, but it will still have a clear pattern of where the curls were. You will then have to use heat tools to make the curls go back to their original style using that curl pattern as a guide.

The best way to tackle this would be to chose another costume that you can buy premade. And no, it's not a poncho.

I can't find anything premade but I would at least be willing to put if off until next con. What would you phrase it as being?

>chose ANOTHER costume
Which is why I recommended looking for a different costume, but alright. If you want to commit to this one, you need to start learning to sew and gathering equipment immediately. I'm not going to sugarcoat this: It's going to look like shit. Every beginner's first project looks like shit because you're first starting out. And it's compounded by the fact that you've chosen an intermediate level project with a tight deadline.

>What would you phrase it as being?
A cloak or robe. A poncho has no hood, is shorter, and has a triangular shape because it's made from one cut of fabric with no seams.

How do?
>Find a sewing pattern (Joanns, Cut-Sew, or Etsy)
>use HTV, fabric paint, or fabric medium + acrylic paint to draw on designs
>Sew cloak, hood, and rabbit ears (with some wire in there for posing), leaving arms undone
>create base for monster hands. Dealer's choice on how to do that, but I'd guess a pvc pipe handbar, cardboard for mouth, and some upholstery foam would do.
>Create fabric cover for monster and extend it to create the sleeve shape then attach
>interpret shoes as you chose
>done

Thank you so much! I don't mind if it doesn't look great, I just want to get some forward momentum with making my own stuff and this sort of direction is what I needed.

I remember being tempted but the quality on those things can be pretty dumpster fire

If you can sew, a hoodie pattern is not too hard and easily found and you'd probably get a far better quality

As a more tanned person, any suggestions on what to use to whiten my complexion for the paler skinned cosplays?

I lost the back bodice piece for the B version of this, but I have the front bodice and I might have the back lining pieces - how would I go about drafting the missing back bodice?

Never drafted patterns, only graded between sizes. I need size 10/12

as someone who only does cosplays in crunch mode, don't do it

it'll look like shit and sewing it takes much longer than it seems

>> No.10751226

>>10751165
If you have the back lining piece, it would be roughly the same as the back bodice piece. I'd say make a mockup using that and then make adjustments from there. Just make sure to transfer those adjustments to the pattern too.

Are there any ways to easily dye synthetic fabric without going through the hassle of using traditional dye? I have a light grey vest that I need to turn very dark grey. I was thinking of mixing up some paint with water and just washing it over with that, but not sure what paint would be best. Doesn't matter if the colour doesn't hold, I just need it for one day.

What's the best method for creating bunny ears? I was going to use some wireframes and just sandwich them between fabric. What kind of adhesive would I want to use?

There's dye pods you can throw in your washing machine.

> I was thinking of mixing up some paint with water and just washing it over with that
Bad idea, it's gonna be crunchy and flaky. Even if you used fabric paint or fabric medium, the surface area you need to cover is too large and will be stiff.

Can I just dye these in a dye bath? I need them purple but I've never dyed shoes before, only clothes.

>> No.10751770

>>10751714
I don't think you can unless they're silk or canvas. I've seen satin dyed shoes before and the color comes out extremely light too. If they're leather, you can use Angelus Leather Paint. It's cheap and it bends with the material so it won't crack.

Incredibly stupid question
I have drawn some patterns over a photo of my head for some props I'm working on, how can I print them on scale? Light trace it on a screen?

>> No.10752686

>>10751899
find out how much smaller the picture is compared to your actual head measurements, and then scale it up.
yeah, it will require some math to do but thats probably what i would do if i did it that way.
the last time i had to do a head piece like a helmet, i just made a plastic wrap "bald cap" covered that in duct tape and then drew out the pattern.

>> No.10752707

>>10752686
You lost me at "math"
In the end I just put a 5cm ref in the picture, zoomed in in my screen until it was on scale using a ruler and then just traced it on a piece of paper after changing brightness on max
May be stupid but hey, it worked

So I've got a lot of basic tools for working with foam but never have, how difficult would it be to do something like goblin slayers armor, minus the helmet
I've never worked with foam so I'm not sure how steep of a learning curve it is
