I have a weird, wide face, feminine lower half of my face, ssj3 goku tier browridge, oddly narrow shoulders but a large ribcage, gyno, weird hands, etc. I just have very strange proportions in my eyes and I don't think I can cosplay much well. Even specifically ugly characters are usually ugly in a way that doesn't fit me. Like I literally lived the wow neckbeard lifestyle for a long time, but I'd never make a convincing cosplay the guy from southpark.
I say just do what you like, you're never going to be exactly like the character. I just wouldn't cosplay something that's 100% unlike you if you're aiming to be accurate to the original media. And not aiming for 100% accuracy is fine, sometimes it's cool to have your own take on the character.
I guess it boils down to your reasons for cosplaying. Some people really care about "bringing the character to life", others are in it for other reasons.

>> No.10731445

>>10731416
I think this is true. I would say you can cosplay if you want to, no one is stopping you since cosplay is for everyone, but if you don't fit the character don't expect anyone to compliment you.
For example I dislike when people of darker color skin cosplay light skin characters because it just doesn't fit the character. I know they have no control over it, and these days it's socially unacceptable to say you dislike it, so I will keep those thoughts to myself.
If you cosplay just for fun, then who cares lol. Don't need to take anyone's word if you don't take it seriously. I take it seriously though, so I actively seek feedback and try to recreate the character to the best of my ability. like >>10731420 said if you care about the accuracy it would be better to not cosplay characters you don't think you could recreate well (to an extent).

Correct. Cosplay is for everyone, but you should always see if you can pull off character X better than character Y. If you're fat, don't cosplay someone skinny. if you're short, don't cosplay someone tall. It'll look really unusual in group shoots.

There's characters you like and characters you can pull off. Ideally, you want the char to be both. I've done the former and latter separately; the former feels better but the latter gets you way more attention/hype. I just end up immersing myself in the content until I start to like the character

Sure but the point is, the reason you never hear about complaints of accuracy is simply because white people avoid cosplaying dark characters like the fucking plague to avoid the racism accusations. Those who do cosplay black characters are immediately slammed with accusations of racism rather than accuracy because people know that it's basically impossible to defend yourself from accusations of racism because it's a witch hunt whereas accusations of inaccuracy are easily brushed of with "I know it's not 100% accurate."

Racism is just the more powerful clout chasing card compared to accuracy, so people will always choose it.

Yes, absolutely. I'm lucky that I'm 5 feet tall and small, so I fit a lot of characters, but at the same time I love cosplaying big tall dudes for some reason. It's figuring out creative ways to overcome this that's one of the best parts of cosplay. I managed to cosplay Darth Vader for Halloween last year by building boot lifts from scratch and scaling the costume and the rest of my body to match. Managed to make myself 6'3" in costume just because I was too stubborn to be a short Vader.
I love seeing anyone having a great time cosplaying and I'll be happy for and compliment even the shittiest looking gremlin Miku's I see because I can tell they're having a good time, but at the same time I wouldn't be caught dead myself in a half-assed costume.

This is a nothingburger counter example. There's more lighter skinned characters to cosplay than darker skinned. By statistics alone, no one would do black skinned characters as much as they will do a lighter skinned. There's no correlation there.

I think all of us criticize bad cosplay. And yes a different skin tone will cause some issues. Which is why Id think it weird for any light skin person to cosplay a Samuel L Jackson character (except for Fury cause he was originally white anyway)

I just hate fat and ugly people. Physiognomy might be a "pseudoscience" but anyone with any awareness of the world can easily tell you that people who are ugly outside are usually ugly inside. And yes, I am in full agreement, just amused by this and assume that's the purpose of the quotation marks. Yes, the external is a reflection of the internal (more often than not). Having a job where I only interact with people for a few seconds has given me an extra sense on how to predict the immediate future, you might say. It's almost always right, and one of the ways to predict their behavior is appearance. As already stated in the con horror stories thread, I made the mistake of telling myself someone was no threat when they clearly were. It was the last time I ever did that.

yeah, it's a total bummer. I like a lot of younger/high school characters (which is most shonen protags...), but I'm 5'11 and it's going to look wack as fuck if I'm taller than the "tall" characters. I was planning on doing Black Star but if I'm level with the Stein's and taller than the Maka's and Soul's, the group photos are going to look goofy as hell. At the same time, I've been told that I can completely fucking SLAY Howl (and the costume would be like a 2 weekend max thing, really easy), but I'm not a fan of the character. Going to suck it up and just watch the movie a bunch of times.

I kind of have it easy in that I tend to imprint on/relate to characters that physically resemble me. I definitely "disqualify" myself from doing certain cosplays - for instance, I have a slender frame and am not muscular so I don't think I'd make a good Joseph Joestar or Batou, BUT that's a personal thing because I wouldn't be satisfied or feel good in those cosplays. If I see someone with my body type cosplaying those characters my reaction isn't "gross DYEL you should be ashamed of yourself".
For me a lot of the fun of cosplay is in that granular close study of the source material and trying to recreate it, but I get that a lot of people approach cosplay more casually, wearing a cosplay of a character as the next step up from wearing a t-shirt with them on that. Live and let live, I guess.

It's undeniable that there's the "x-factor" of a cosplay looking even better if you resemble the character/actor. I've noticed that the strongest positive reactions include "you really look like [actor]", even with the best makeup skills there's still that ceiling of your proportions/bone structure/whatever.

Not every body type looks good in every clothing style. I look terrible in anything a-line, so I avoid cosplaying characters that wear a-line outfits. I can rock body-con dresses or anything with a suit-coat, so I gravitate to characters who wear those- but only if I like the character.

Honestly I don't think it's for everyone. People can do what they want, but I don't think everyone should do it unless they are close to the character. I consider cosplay to be reserved for relatively attractive looking people who are fit and thin. However, I think when people do outlier cosplays that play off their bodies I'm all for it. Like really fat guys doing Roadhog. And yes I hold myself to this belief, I'm fat and ugly and therefore do not cosplay. Once I find the right tall, fat and ugly character for me, maybe I will.

Fuck Americunts. You can't force other countries to live to the same standarts as yours. You are SO racist and disrespectful with people from other races and countries. Do you never stop and think "well, maybe their society is different because their history was different from ours"?

Most countries in the world have a 99% of the population from just one race. They don't have the race issues that America has. So you can't force your shit thoughts into them BECAUSE IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE.

In Europe, being tanned is a symbol of being rich. It means you can go on vacation to a sunny place and tan yourself under the sun. In Asia, it means you are poor because you work in hard jobs under the sun, which are poorly paid.

In America it means racism because YOU GUYS ARE RACIST. But people from other countries are not.

I agree with her, but I don't hold others to my own standard.
When you're darker skinned it really is hard to cosplay to what you look like. I end up feeling like I have to cosplay characters I don't know or care about, random background characters, or nobodies most of the time because I only fit a small subset of a small subset of anime characters. Or I have to stick to more Western sources like comics or films I don't read or watch. I'm willing to do it, but I won't judge anyone who doesn't choose to restrict themselves.

The opinions in this thread are partially why cosplay has been so difficult for me lately. I don't have anyone I want to cosplay that fits my skin tone and it sucks out the enjoyment for me. I'm getting too old to spend 3 months on a costume for a character I don't really care for. Wish I could just cosplay my favorite characters with similar body types but then I berate myself for misrepresenting them.
