They definitely don't look the same, shoes aren't made to look that way anymore. Meta's platforms decreased in size radically and Taobao doesn't have any shoes with the same bulbous/square toe box and construction in general. They just look like poor imitations. Well, they are in the 90s style. Futasma/Pleaser/Demonia is indeed close but quality is disputable.

If someone is looking for leather (they have vegan options too) some platform models of New Rocks (they have some less industrial looking shoes) might fit someone's styles of gothic lolita. They have some more versatile looking models then what people typically think when they hear New Rock.

From vegan options there are some Altercore models that have taller soles. altercore (_dot_) pl /en/product-category/woman/platforms/

There is also Spanish Steelground but I have no idea what is their quality or what models do they make they sell only trough retail shops.

If someone is from Mexico, Mexico City have many shops where local craftsmen sell their customs. But well, theses people probably already know about that anyway. So it's more of info to the tourists.

Well, wide rounded toe was 90s trope in shoes. A polar opposite of previously trendy spiked toe of the 80s and earlier decades. So it was easy to find such designs even among normie brands. Only New Rock of all known to me brands that existed back then preserved such rounded toe in some lines.

I do as well, I own one white pair from before they changed their platform height to a lower one and one black pair that came out a couple years ago. Many younger EGL would not believe there were times when EGL was a lot more punk. As EGL while being it's own things borrowed a lot from western goth back in early days. Mana been using studded wristbands and collars, chains too. But one can start arguing that it is not what EGL is. Well, I see no problem in using New Rock boots if one uses a lot of silver (or pewter stainless steel) jewelry - rings, chains etc. But such looks gone almost extinct in the West.

No one here is saying gothic lolita is same as goth. Goth is music based subculture that developed own fashion. EGL is fashion based subculture that was strongly influenced by goth in early days. Japan had own goth scene in these days as well as was influenced by goth bands from the west. There are also were easy noticeable influences of goth music on the first Malice Mizer demo. So Mana who is one of cocreators of EGL was strongly influenced by Goth both fashion and music wise. If you take a look at music and look of for example western goth band Garden of Delight links and inspirations would be obvious.

Other influence on EGL was synthpop band Strawbery Switchblade (that was kinda on hit wonder in Japan and some Japanese are citig them as strong influence on lolita in general) in which Rose McDowal was dressing a lot akin to what goths of the time were wearing like a lot of leather, also silvery jewelry, dark makeup. etc. PVC too. Mana himself was wearing such stuff too.

So while there are differences in what EGL is and what goth fashion is they both had small intersection at one point.

Anon, we weren't all ita's from conception. I've also been using this board since '06 as well. Believe it or not, it helped me not be a train wreck starting out along with lurking LJs profusely. I really only started in '07, however. I wasn't an old schooler and I had access to a lot of money, learned of shopping services quickly. But my best friend that I started with was an old schooler. She definitely had some ita moments, however, since loliables were a thing.. yes. Overall, hand made shit and loliables are relatively old school..
