Not everyone who is unvaccinated is that way by choice. Some people have health complications that keep them from being able to take the vaccine, some are unable to because of a controlling spouse/parents, and some live in countries where it isnt as readily available as the US. I wish we could just open everything up again, but thats putting a lot of innocent people at risk.

In my area specifically, I can't pin down a single person here who is unvaccinated that isn't their choice. In other nations where vaccine rollouts been shit, I get it, it's different. But it's gotten to the point where 90% or more people who are unvaccinated are by choice unless they're out of the age range, and now that's changing too. It just pisses me off seeing people getting upset at people like me, who got the jab a million fucking times, wanting to attend conventions. If you're unvaccinated and attending a convention, thats your problem and you're taking that risk. I'm not going around busy areas that people can't avoid and coughing on them, I'm attending an event that you have to sign up to go to, and an event that probably has a gazillion precautions in place anyway. I went to a busy con last year that required a vaccination card on registration and didn't notice as many obviously sick people as prior years pre-plague. I think people at least are taking more precautions like staying home if you're sick but go anyway because you need muh funzies.

My issue is that I don't wanna have to wear a mask when I'm armed to the teeth with a vaccine, booster, and natural immunity from getting the 'rona the first time around.

The vaccine lowers your chance of getting it. It doesn't "prevent symptoms." It prepares your body for the virus, giving your body a head start and a better shot at defending itself, which causes less severe symptoms. People who are asymptomatic or have less severe symptoms are contagious for a shorter period of time and are sick for less time, and those people are usually the vaccinated. The less chance the virus has to replicate, the less it has a chance to mutate.

Fewer vaccinated people means the virus spreads faster and has more opportunities to mutate by virtue of having more viable hosts. The strains that are more transmissible end up becoming more dominant through this process.

Some of the parts of the virus that mutate to make it easier to spread to others are also associated with the parts of the virus the vaccine is designed to help your body use to identify the virus and kill it off before it can reproduce enough to cause you to be ill. But when those are changing because it is spreading and mutating faster than the vaccine has been given to people (clearly people under estimated how strong antivax sentiment was even for established uncontroversial vaccines like polio, MMR, and chicken pox, much less this one which is not as bad as people think but new and unfamiliar to them so "scary"), the vaccine becomes less effective. Both on an individual level because it is fighting a version of the virus a bit different than it was designed for, and a population level because herd immunity is unable to be built as the combo of natural and vaccine immunity in the population aren't keeping pace with the rate of the virus' new mutations. Reinfections increase too because natural immunity is less consistent than vaccine immunity and is also generally only for the strain you got then, not future ones.

Antivaxxers aren't directly at fault but kind of contribute (as does anyone who isn't practicing reasonable hygiene and prevention measures for their area/situation) to a self-fulfilling prophecy by not getting the vaccine which then gives the virus more chance to mutate which then leads to the harder to contain strains so then the vaccine does end up being less effective than if everyone who can safely take it just took it.
