Fair warning, the Kalahari is up in Round Rock which is pretty far North of the city proper, especially with traffic. I live in North Austin (20~ minutes away) and can give you some places on the North side of the city, but they're still a bit of a hike from the convention center.
P. Terry's is a local fast food burger Chain. Pretty solid poorfag choice.
Tumble22 has a few locations including 1 in Round Rock, it's a pretty good hot chicken place.
Stiles Switch BBQ is one of the better BBQ places in the city and is probably the best one up North
Ramen Tatsuya is a pretty good ramen placeif you're looking for a Yuppie focused area, the domain has a lot of bars & restaurants withing walking distance. I haven't been there enough to really comment on it though.

There's some game and comic shops in North Austin and that little area near Gaming Goat and Daiso with the Korean corndog place, Kura sushi, a new ramen shop, etc. And further up you get a lot more Japanese restaurants, H-Mart and their food court, and a few other things.

Those average temperatures put it on par with CCE and just a few degrees cooler than Ohio.
The Colossalcons are always scheduled for the off-season because resort bookings are lower than in the summer months.
There would just be way too many normies if the cons ran during the busy season (when temperatures are higher), and that would likely become a problem.
I doubt they'll be opening the outdoor water park in November regardless of the weather.

About the resort? Most of what I don’t like is actually con related issues so I can deal. Mainly late night swim always become /goo lagoon/ tier because of how packed it gets. Otherwise, I like the water slides, and I like the lazy River when it’s actually fucking lazy and not trying to speed run me. I was usually busy doing photoshoot stuff or playing arm chair psychologist to other con goers to actually relax. So it’s kind of exciting that I get to play tourist on my own terms now that most of my own cosplay group has been filtered out by COVID, while I’m the only one who still wants to travel and cosplay in general.

First year Colossalcon’s are usually the most cozy, imho. I love Prime to death but the issue was the rampant over crowding and it being over ran with “social media influencers”, but I realistically have not been since COVID was a thing. I slept on Prime and East despite being a realistic drive away from both this year because of me banking on dumb muzzle mandates. Texas is a diff story as far as I’m concerned, so I’m banking on this one being good by its location and region. Different strokes for different folks though, the company you’re with make the con you’re at infinitely more terrible or fun. I would realistically say if you got the budget for it, and don’t have any other cons to go to for like 6 months, it’s a viable option. But I wouldn’t go out of the way for it.

Prime this year felt a lot like the early years before it became viral. It was chill, cozy and great. East was about normal levels minus a little less crowds, but it's passed the cozy mark. The first few years are usually pretty cozy, but I'm not sure how quickly Texas will evolve.

The levels of hypocrisy from people complaining about Colossalcon Ohio happening was astounding.
The con took place when Covid cases were at the lowest point in months (around 20,000 cases/day). Yet a lot of those same people that complained went to cons like Otakon when the 4th wave was ramping up, and cases were like 5 times higher. OTHER THAN THAT, THIS PROJECT IS ACTUALLY COMING OUT PRETTY WELL. Downgraded from a 15v power supply to a 9v power supply and it powers both the motor and the lights needed for the prop. Pretty excited to show it off at the con, soldering ain't so rough at all.

I did that in Ohio on day 0 and it went over fine, so karma must have missed me. NEVER would I have done so under normal circumstances, but for some reason (that I forgot) people were playing "All the Small Things" earlier and enjoying themselves, so I decided to do it. Back in January, I asked my friend what his plans for the rest of the year were for cons, and he immediately defaulted to AWA. Hence why I'm headed there in two days. Meanwhile, all his other buddies are headed to Youma. Never done either myself, so how that goes remains to be seen, though him shunning all of them STRONGLY suggests Atlanta is the correct choice. I just hope to God there's a few people around on Halloween night to hang with. The main event is on Sunday when everyone's left, while the next Halloween on a weekend is 2025. Sad !

Of all the cities I've seen this year, Austin was the best, without question. Colossal is the best venue I've ever done, so this is an easy win. My expectations for this one are VERY high.

Youmacon is only really a smart play if you can drive to it or take a train to it from surrounding cities and states. You're at the mercy of the weather if you plan to fly in and due to it's location is not unheard of for a freak snow storm or bad weather to destroy your flight in and out of there. Atlanta has had odd cold snaps in the past during AWA but it's so few you could count it on 2 fingers, I think 2019 was the only one in the past 5 years that a freak freeze happened.

This is technically the biggest indoor waterpark now, as East makes Sandusky look like a mini park, and this is expected to be about twice the size + some golf. I was tempted to do some Pangya cosplay this time around too, I might in the matter of fact but I like the safe line up I have now.

Put some progress into the Outrage MK2. Gotta work on the hilt tomorrow, doing the blades second to last and doing the lighting last obviously. I've recently just found out that there were more than just 1 "Until Dawn" games, and while they are slasher movies at heart, they make absolutely good background noise to work on.

Waterpark con is all about socializing and making new buddies, sloshed or not. For me, I personally get my thrills building cool shit and showing it off to other folks. Gotta keep the reason I got into cosplay alive, and prop making is how I express myself. Colossalcon Texas in this case is probably going to be the only vacation I've been able to get since the beginning of COVID, so I'm taking it as a chance to let loose. BUT having some swag props would be the icing on the cake for me.

If it's like colossal prime, they give you wristbands that are both room keys and water park passes. Sometimes the front desk will give you additional room card keys if you ask, but they won't get you into the waterpark. So you may need to buy a pass.

It felt like pre-2010 Colossalcon. Park was accessible, everyone friendly. My only complaint was that there could have been a tad bit more people, but I’m hoping it doesn’t implode like how East did. I think after year 2, me and the boys decided to just fly out to San Japan instead of driving because Kalahari Booking got just as retarded as Prime did. Between Covid & ANYC being the same week, it was a pretty solid turnout for a 1st year con. Ikkicon is a shitshow so there isn't much competition for it to be the best con in Austin & possibly the state if it improves. I'd like if they pushed it to be a bit earlier (maybe mid October or something to dodge Youma/AWA) & enabling outdoor swimming, but that might be cutting it too close to East.
Hopefully the Kalahari staff get a bit less hands on trying to stop parties & whaynot for next year. That was by far my biggest issue with it.

Until it gets to Prime size of selling out the entire resort this is going to be a regular issue. There were other families there that weren't there for the con who don't need to hear parties and orgies at 1am. They tried to put most of the con people on the 5th-7th floor but not everyone on those floors wanted to party. They had signs about a 3 strike system which they did enforce.

Maybe CC should ask Kalahari if they can designate a party floor otherwise it'll be the same prob next year.

Outdoor pool being open would’ve been nice but they would have to literally switch which season the con opens up in. I think they’re keeping with November because like the weekend afterwards is Thanksgiving, so they can probably rent that specific weekend before for dirt cheap. Same thing goes with how East is always before Labor Day and Prime is the first weekend of the summer. All of these are usually before big holidays or peak seasons.
