Really not expecting this to be a thing. I don't live in Atlanta, but I do live in Georgia and nobody here gives a shit about masks anymore. They weren't particularly good about wearing masks before but now that people could plausibly have the vaccine, people look at you funny for wearing one. Just today I went into a convenience store and the door said that they require masks, so I put one on and went in and nobody else was wearing one, not even the employees.

Awww, that's so cute. I always have a giggle when people say this.
Staff will be told how to handle things prior to the event. They may be told to do nothing if someone isn't wearing a mask, in which case some others will realize the situation and take off their mask if they were wearing one.
However, if they're told they need to enforce it, they will, and you WILL comply. All it will take is for them to kick a couple people out or even just raise their voice a little bit to warn people, and you'll slap that thing on your face so quick that your hands will be trembling.
They have your money prior to the con, so they've got you by the balls. Don't pretend you're going to stand up for anything, because you won't.

Most cons have not enforced masks, but the last major con to happen did enforce them (Otakon).

As the number of COVID related cases continues to climb, it becomes clear that we need to update our health and safety protocols in order to keep that commitment. With the Delta variant causing more COVID-19 cases worldwide, including “breakthrough” infections of vaccinated individuals, we must make changes to our COVID protocols including requiring all attendees who attend the live convention to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of arrival before entering the convention.

What exactly does "partying" entail? Drinking? What if I don't drink? What "all-hours-of-the-night shit" is there to do? When I hear people say that it's usually drugs and alcohol. Surely there's more than that, right?

>> No.10663597

Not really, Animation track usually has unofficial 24 hour cartoons running but I'm not doing any of that this year. Video games run most of the night and even though Joystick says they're only running a couple of hours if you're being cool they'll run them to well into 3 or 4 in the morning because they're a pain to turn off and on. Might be different because each room looks like it's having mandatory cleaning though.

In regards to masks it looks like they'll make you wear them when going into panels, ie when they're checking your badge. It also seems like they're trying to have complementary masks in some of the hotels but I'm expecting them to run out or stop doing that after Friday.

My friend is running around as the Happy Mask Salesman from Majora's Mask and is hoping to sell his cheap masks for 2 bucks a piece, but he only has 500 and is an unreliable alcoholic so I wouldn't count on running into him, although we typically are around the Hyatt smoking area.

Tons of drinking. Drugs if you look in the right corners. But even if you don't do those, the face-melting raves that go until 5+ a.m. should surely do it for you! 24/7 open gaming is fairly common at a lot of bigger cons, but there are substantially more folks up & at 'em at DragonCon into the wee-hours of the night/morning.

What do you like to do? What does "partying" mean for you? With 40,000 people there, there's bound to be a group that will fit your criteria.

Also it's totally valid to wear a costume two days. Some costumes can be sort of reworked too- you can hem up pants and tops to make a sexy version, or get a pack of oversized googly eyes and a bunch of bananas to sub in for guns- if it's a super edgy costume this can be especially fun!

>Convention is coming up in 2 days

Kek. Do people really wait thing long hoping that maybe a hotel will drop its prices? And I can't imagine hotels scrambling to drop their prices to sell a handful of rooms.
Hotel prices have been up pretty much everywhere I've looked (all around the country) this year, and they've only been going higher as the year has gone on.
I booked a hotel room for an upcoming con 4 months ago, and it was $30 or $40 higher than what I've paid in the past. Right now, that same hotel room is now around $100 higher.
What you suggest might have worked in the past, but people are apparently traveling a lot more in recent months, so hotels and airlines are not inclined to drop prices.

>Do people really wait thing long hoping that maybe a hotel will drop its prices?

Alright, I’ll address this. Unlike airlines, hotels drop prices closer to the date of arrival. That is because a hotel will generally ALWAYS have a set amount of rooms it is selling. The room as a product is temporal. Once the night passes, that opportunity to make money is gone forever. Routes and frequency can fluctuate based on demand, but a hotel is a fixed entity and so are their competitors.

There are still a ton of open rooms locked behind a “con rate.” They’ll have to release them from the minimum length of stay of 3-4 nights and drop the price if they want to make any money on them, since they are competing with other hotels with surplus inventory.

Now, you’ll probably have to wait until Friday afternoon to book, because that’s when revenue managers say “oh shit we gotta put heads in beds this weekend.” But no, they aren’t going to keep asking for con prices at the last minute.

HotelTonight is a good resource for finding last minute hotels at rockbottom prices.

If you have friends in the travel industry or federal government you can get a significant rate reduction on hotel rooms. I'm staying with a friend who's a fed employee and the room only costs $98 a night and not that far from the host hotels.

You better have that work ID though.

>> No.10666370

>>10666336
I do understand that general logic, and it works out that way sometimes.
However, the "hotels drop prices closer to the date of arrival" is a broad generalization that certainly isn't true a significant amount of the time. Hotels will alter their price based on supply and demand. If they have or haven't sold a certain amount of rooms by a certain date, they'll raise or lower their price accordingly.
Just as an example, in March I started looking at hotel prices for a con later in the year. It was $125 per night then. Several months later it was $140 per night. It's now at $170 per night, and the con is in 3 weeks.
Luckily I booked early at the lowest rate. I doubt those prices are gonna plummet in the coming weeks.

So, it's been a week and change. A few positive COVID tests have been reported in the FB group and the discord, a ton more negative tests, overall nothing seems awful? Now's when we'd see a ton of cases if there'd been super spreading.

Masking was also surprisingly good the whole weekend, at least judging from random strolls through the Hilton/Marriott/Hyatt at various points during the day. Some slippage at night, and the Pulse bar was (unsurprisingly) at least 50% mask-free, but everything else seemed OK. Tbh as a volunteer I was expecting to have to do a lot of reminding, but folks were... actually really good about it, at least in my track's room and the ballrooms I worked.

Also holy fuck having the Hilton DJs outside rather than in the atrium was so nice this year. As was 50% capacity making it possible to walk around and get elevators. I'd be happy to pay 2x for my badge if DC eliminated saturady-only passes, that seemed like the biggest shift (saturday not becoming a jam-packed shitshow).

Overall... not a total disaster?

The best part of this Dragoncon was the lack of crowds. 42k was the final number. I'll never forget the surreal moment of seeing a Marriott elevator with only one person on it at 12am Saturday. The icing on the cake was the non humid weather for the first few days of the con. At the closing, they mentioned that the days of 80k crowds are not coming back for a while so enjoy having room in 2022. Hotels will probably be a lot easier to get for the next few years.

>> No.10673063

>>10671788
Forcing people to have some sort of test/vaccination to pick up their badges and, even if not perfect, pretty good mask coverage really helps.

Also yea, 100% would rather pay more if they could continue to cap the convention or eliminated Saturday passes. It felt amazing going to the vendor hall and being able to approach a booth and talk to someone.

>> No.10673145

>>10673063
Hell, being able to *get into* the vendor hall without a 1+ hour line.
The main downside was that a lot of the >10PM content got nixed because of lack of volunteers or speakers at tracks, so what was left overfilled super early. E.g., the late-night puppet slam usually has tons of space for walk-in/walk-out, this year was hard capped and closed and everyone was told "no one-in-one-out", and there just wasn't much else to do by that point in time. RHCP and Kilt Blowing required queuing much earlier than usual, too.
But I don't think sat-only passes would fix any of that shit, so I hope they fucking die forever.

>>10672852
Fuck yeah, I stayed at the Hilton for the first time and elevators were... manageable. And the weather was fucking gorgeous. Hotels are already kind of a mess, though, Sheraton sold out real fast once the link got leaked, and I'm expecting hunger games for the Westin on the 29th. But w/e, I got my rooms already, idgaf.

Were there more details from closing? I skipped b/c I assumed it wouldn't be interesting but now it sounds like there was some Insight dropped.
